Salutations Division 17!

Welcome back to school! I hope everyone is refreshed from summer vacation, because now we’re kicking it full gear into the school year! Although homework and tests aren’t things the highlights of high school, there’s always that first Key Club meeting with the fresh batch of Freshmen to look forward to! At this point, many of you have already held your first meeting! I hope it went well, and that your passion for Key Club was contagious!

Please at least skim through this newsletter! We are now at the halfway point of our service year, and now that school is back in session, there is A LOT going on: from Fall Rally to our next Divisional event, to the Eliminathon! This newsletter will help you keep track of everything, and organize anything that seems discombobulated to you.

Enjoy the newsletter and enjoy the school year! It’s going to get busy, but if we all work together, we can dominate this service year!

If you need help with anything, or even just want to chat, please do not hesitate to contact me! A lot of you learned at RTCs that your LTG is always ready to serve you and your clubs!

Yours in caring and service,

Taken at South RTCs

Fall Regional Training Conferences took place and split the New Jersey into three parts: Central, South and North. On September 13th, Central RTCs took place at Voorhees High school, on September 14th, South RTCs took place at Egg Har-bor Township High School, and on September 20th, North RTCs took place at Parsippany Hills High School. We had three officers from High Tech attend Central, and a total of 24 Key Clubbers, officers and members, attend North RTCs! This is the HIGHEST attendance from our division in YEARS. I would like to thank everyone who took time out of their Satur-day to come out! I hope everyone took back not only valuable information, but fun memories and new friendships as well!

I attended South RTCs, and North RTCs where I saw a lot of you! The amount of joy I felt in my heart is inexplicable, but I can say with confidence that it was overflowing. CLUB SEC-RETARIES, don’t forget that in the September CMRF (which is due on October 10), you need to mark how many Key club-bers from your club attended RTCs! If you had officers and members attend two different RTCs, you can just put down the total. For example: 3 officers attended Central, 3 officers attended North, in total, 6 officers attended RTCs.

If you have any questions or haven’t received any of the presen-tations, please do not hesitate to contact me! I will get them for you as soon as possible!

Remember when I asked all of you to go around your school and towns asking for spare change for the Eliminate Project? Well guess what? IT WAS A TOTAL SUCCESS. Everything, bills and coins, all added up to be $195!! That’s 108 mothers, and their future babies we just saved!! Give yourselves a round of applause! Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to take a picture, but thank you to everyone who participated and contributed even just a little bit to the mini divisional event! Secretaries, you can technically mark this on your CMRF, but just put a little * next to it!

Back to School

We’re finally back in school! Although some of you are probably dreading it.

At this time, pretty much all of Division 17’s clubs have held their first meet-

ing. This article may seem a little bit overdue, but it has a few ideas to help

you break any awkward tensions between your members, and a few tips on

how to offer leadership roles to your members!

1. ICEBREAKERS

A lot of you attended RTCs, so you got a taste of how icebreakers work.

Here are some icebreakers that you can use to start off your meetings!

- Key Club Trivia: test your members to see how much they know about Key

- Song Fest: allow your members to split up into several groups. The em-

cee of the icebreaker will give the groups a word, and the groups need to

find a song with that particular word in the lyrics and sing it all together.

No repeats!

- Human Machine: split your members into groups and give everyone about

5 minutes to practice imitating a machine. After the 5 minutes, each group

will present their “machine” and everyone else has to guess what it is!

2. COMMITTEE SYSTEM

Vice Presidents are familiar with this because it was discussed at the Vice presi-

dent RTC workshop. If your club has enough members, try setting up a com-

mittee system when you can have general members apply for committee head.

It’s a great way to give them a taste of what it’s like to be an officer! Here’s a

list of a few committees, called standing committees, your club could have!

- Public Relations

- Fundraising

- Social Events Committee

If you are not familiar with the specifics of committees, feel free to contact me!

Take notes son...

These are only ideas! You guys got a lot at RTCs, and you would be amazed to know that all the suggestions you got at RTCs was only the tip of the ice berg! Feel free to not only communicate with your division and LTG, but look on issuu for other LTG’s and Club Editors’ newsletters for more information!

Very similar to our recent Change for Change event, except instead of only the division doing it, the ENTIRE WORLD will be partaking in this! Well, every town that celebrates Halloween, that is. Hand out the orange UNICEF boxes not only to the trick-or-treating Key Clubbers, but also to your elementary schools! As children go around col-lecting candy, they can also go around collecting spare change for the ELIMINATE project. (Remember! The ELIMI-NATE project is something the UNICEF organization started, and asked Key Club International to help out!) Some clubs go as far as to setting up a little competition for the elementary students, so that they have a little more initia-tive. Start planning now! Halloween is only a month away! If your club hasn’t received UNICEF boxes yet, please con-tact me immediately!

Trick or Treat for UNICEF! Remember the orange boxes when you were a kid?

Salutations New Jersey District!

Each year, the first week of November marks Key Club Week! Key Club Week, November 3-7 this year, allows clubs to show off their Key Club spirit and make it a household name. Much like Eliminate Week, each day in Key Club Week is assigned a theme. From hosting a service project with local K-Family clubs, to bringing a friend to a Key Club meet-ing, Key Club Week is a great way to promote Key Club and the Eliminate project. Flyers for Key Club Week, which will include all necessary information, will be available shortly. Keep your eye out for the flyers from your respective Lieutenant Governor and make sure to use the official hashtag, #KeyClubWeek! If you want to get a head start on plan-ning your events for this week, a list of suggestions has been posted at http://www.keyclub.org/service/kctw.aspx.

Of course, spreading the word about the Eliminate Project is vital in this final year of the campaign. To promote fund-raising towards the New Jersey District’s goal, $109.325.15, and to promote awareness about Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT), the New Jersey District will host a series of volleyball tournaments, each called the Eliminathon. Win-ners from the divisional level will qualify to compete at the district level and determine the best of the best players of the New Jersey District! Any high schooler can participate in the tournament by forming a group of 6 players at the di-visional level. Any one can come and support your teams. Once you receive a date and time, invite all of your friends to come and spectate!

More information about the Eliminathon will be released shortly. Keep an eye out for flyers sent outby your Lieutenant Governor!

We hope to see you at this year’s Eliminathon!

Teams from Division 16 and Division 17 will be facing off in a Volleyball Tournament ideally some time in November to determine who will advance on to verse teams from the District, and to raise money and awareness for the ELIMINATE Project! If you know your school would be willing or would be able to host this event, please contact me or LTG David Guirgis immediately! You don’t need to be a star volley-ball player to save mothers and their babies! You just need to come out and have fun! :)

Hello Key Clubbers of Division 17!

Every fall, students from around the state of New Jersey attend Key Leader and lean valuable skills about becom-ing a better leader. Throughout the weekend, students participate in unique ice breakers, fun group activi-ties, and a challenging ropes course requiring teamwork to pass it. Be-tween the family meals and work-shops, you will be able to get more feedback from other clubs, as well as information that Key Club Interna-tional created for education in servant leadership, which is a type of leader-ship focused on the team rather than the officers. You will not only leave this weekend making 60 new friends, but also gain new tips and tricks you can bring back to your home clubs for improvement. It will be an experience that you will not be able to stop talk-ing about!

This year’s Key Leader will take place from December 5-7 and will cost $200 for regular students. For Key Clubbers, it will cost $175 due to a scholarship provided by Key Club International. If you are interested in attending the Key Leder event in New Jersey, go to www.key-leader.org and click on “Find Events”, then scroll down to “filter by” and selected State and proceed to click on New Jersey. We hope to see everyone at this year’s Key Leader weekend!

Did you know the Ice Bucket Challenge was to help fight ALS?

Over the summer, the world was overtaken by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. If nominated, you had 24 hours to either donate to the ALS Association or dump a bucket of ice water on yourself. This challenge raised millions of dollars for the ALS Association. This organization works towards finding a cure for this terrible disease. What is ALS? Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Over time, the disease makes one eventually lose complete loss of control of their body: those affected can’t even speak. The deterioration of the body eventually leads to death. There is no cure.

How can my club help the ALS Foundation? How can my club save many lives? Your club can hold any sort of fundraiser that tends to be successful for your individual club. Whether it is a bake sale, car wash, etc., any sort of funds you can raise are very much appreciated. Want to do something really cool though? Why not have a school wide ALS ice bucket challenge? Designate a day where the school will go outside where the challenge will take place. During the days preceding the challenge have Key Clubbers run a stand during lunches or after school where they will collect donations and give a wristband (so you don’t have any non-donators participating) to those who will be able to participate. On the designated day, have those who donated come onto the field with their buckets (can be brought from home or donated) and complete the challenge. What a great way to raise money for such a worthy cause. Please contact your LTG with any questions regarding the ALS Association or the project.

It’s growing to be a hectic Fall! We already got past the first checkpoint: RTCs! Now it’s time to start focusing on Fall Rally and our divisional event, Footsteps for Fami-lies! Of course, there are other things to keep track of as well! This page is here to help you organize all the dead-

lines, and act as your to-do list for the rest of September, and all throughout October! Please take out your note-books and pens, and take note of everything! YOU’RE GETTING TESTED ON THIS (just kidding. But do stay organized!).

September CMRF: CONTEST The first Secretary to submit in their CMRF properly filled out, I will buy him/her and their club officers who attend, a cake pop at the next DCM!

Fall Rally Registration The early registration deadline already passed, but if your club still intends on attending, please let the district know ASAP, so that you can get a bus pass!

Tools for Schools Don’t forget to hold a drive at your school prior to Fall Rally, collecting UNUSED school supplies! On the day of Fall Rally, bring the donations to 6 Flags so they can be donated to less fortunate stu-dents!

Footsteps for Families Our next divisional event! Our division is already signed up as team, but we need people to sponsor us so that we can raise money to prevent Child Abuse in New Jersey!

Dues The school year has started, so it’s not a bad time to start thinking about dues! Don’t forget that dues increased to $12.50!! You are allowed to hype it up to $17 to make a profit, but no more than $17!
