The McLeod Cup combines all participating staff, students and alumni into a pool and a live draft then takes place. A tournament style format is then played with a winning team being crowned at the end. A perfect way to let loose and see the lighter side of the students and staff before the holiday break. There would be four teams in total and about 50 participants in the tournament. The four goalies, who were team captains were Jackson Parsons, Francis Plant, Michael Lenhart, and CIHA Programs Coordinator Rejean Amyot. In a surprise twist, the staff would opt out of the draft and form their own team, leaving the 3 remaining goalies to select from students and alumni. We had several alumni join us for this year’s tournament. They were: Donovan Sebrango (Kitchener, OHL), Jake Jurgeneit (Nepean, CCHL), Owen Dunne (Nepean, CCHL), River Gull (Rockland, CCHL), Sam Mattie (Casselman, CCHL2), and Etienne Agius-Pease (Casselman, CCHL2). Once the teams were selected it was game on! Each team would play three games before the top two teams advanced to a one game final. While it was a friendly tournament, the competition was intense with the amount of highly skilled and competitive students and former professional hockey players involved. Once each team completed their games, two teams were left standing at the top: Team Parsons and Team Plant. They played an entertaining final game but it would be Team Parsons that would come out on top, winning the 2018 McLeod Cup! It was the perfect way to cap off the first three and a half months of school by bringing the CIHA family together one last time in 2018 before the students head back home for the holiday break! 2018 McLeod Cup

As we enter into the holiday break, that means it’s time for the annual tradition of the McLeodCup, an event that both staff and students circle on their calendars.

The McLeod Cup combines all participating staff, students and alumni into a pool and a livedraft then takes place. A tournament style format is then played with a winning team beingcrowned at the end. A perfect way to let loose and see the lighter side of the students andstaff before the holiday break.

S C H O O L .Media Arts Field Trip

The grade 8 and 10 students studying Media Arts had the privilege of touring the Bell Media Station indowntown Ottawa. During the tour, the boys were able to experience behind the scenes of a live CTV MorningOttawa show and a live TSN 1200 broadcast, which is an all-sports talk radio station. The boys were able toobserve the many moving parts and people behind the scenes as well as the on-air personalities like anchors, reporters and meteorologists, who are the most visible and well-known members of television news teams. Theboys got to meet everyone from web-cast designers, news directors, social media managers, news writers, editors, broadcast technicians, audio engineers, and camera operators just to name a few.

After an in-depth tour of how the Bell Media Station operates behind the scenes and how much detail goes intoeach segment and live show, the class was able to identify some media forms and explain how the conventionsand techniques associated with them are used to create meaning. In addition, they also learned how to createa variety of media texts for different purposes and audiences using appropriate forms, conventions andtechniques.

Men's Health Presentation

On November 19th, a former Registered Nurse at the Ottawa Cancer Clinic (specifically in the prostate cancerunit), and mother of teacher Rachel Waldie, Marian Waldie, came to speak with the students about men'shealth issues. She spoke with them about the signs and symptoms of prostate and testicular cancer, how tostay healthy and protect themselves and men's mental health. As part of our Movember Awareness Campaign,we wanted to give the boys first hand information and someone they could speak to and ask questions. It wasa very interesting and informative presentation.

Canadian War Museum Field Trip

On December 3rd, the grade 10 Canadian History and the grade 11 American History classes went to theCanadian War Museum for a field trip. The day started with a World War II artifact presentation and activity. The boys were able to touch and try on several artifacts from WWII. Then, the Canadian History class touredthe WWII section of the museum and the American History class went to look at the Cold War exhibit. Finally, both classes met in the tank room where we were lucky enough to get a tour from retired Tank Commander,Don Allen. Overall, it was a great day and a fantastic hands-on experience for the boys!

House Teams Update

We capped of 2018 with a very sweet and messy festive event - The Ginger Bread House Challenge. EachHouse Team was given a variety of Ginger Bread kits from which to make a truly creative masterpiece! A fewof the teams got completely sidetracked as they devoured the bags of icing and candy decorations and wereunable to create anything very spectacular with what was left! Others went all out and masterfully createdscenes of the Zombie Apocalypse (Crosby), and the Minion Massacre (Matthews). However, Team McDavidpulled out all the stops and designed a stunning Ginger Bread Tree House.

So in wrapping up 2018, Team Crosby are still showing their strength with a sizable lead over the otherteams as they sit at 392 points. Leading the charge are Team McDavid with 286 points, followed by TeamPrice with 225, Team Matthews with 216, and Team Karlsson with 214.

Little Bags of Goodness

As a House Team activity, students and staff left little blue bags on doorsteps around Rockland for a great cause! Our Little Bags of Goodness Project is in support of Operation Come Home, which helps homeless youth in Ottawa and the surrounding area. Each of the boys left a note in a bag with a list of items we wished to collect including mitts, hats, shampoo, soap and warm coats. Winter, especially around the holiday season, can be a cold and lonely time especially for the homeless. The residents of Rockland were extremely generous with their donations and we are excited to present all of the donations to Operation Come Home.

Alum Semyon Der-Arguchintsev Featured in the Athletic

Semyon played 2 years at CIHA, compiling 107 points in 77 games, and winning the Hockey Eastern OntarioRookie of the Year in 2016. He was then drafted 27th overall by the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario HockeyLeague and in 2018 he was drafted 76th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He recently signed his entry levelcontract with Toronto, and currently plays for Peterborough.

Read below for an excerpt from the Athletic's Scott Wheeler and his story on alum Semyon Der-Arguchintsev.

More than 300 kilometres east of Peterborough, the Canadian International Hockey Academy (CIHA) sits onthe banks of the Ottawa River dividing Ontario from Quebec.

Its three buildings — a residence, a cafeteria and a two-pad arena — sit between a storage facility just off ofHighway 17 on the outskirts of Rockland, a town of 11,000 people.

It’s here, after prompting from a friend who doesn’t play hockey anymore, where Der-Arguchintsev first madethe 10-hour trip from Moscow to Canada to pursue his dream.

It was just before his 14th birthday when he decided to take the plunge. At the time, CIHA was in its infancyand had little-to-no track record for developing talent. Today, its program is a cross between a Canadianprivate school (an international boarding student pays $44,900 in tuition) and an AAA program. CIHA plays outof Eastern Ontario’s top Bantam and Midget minor hockey league rather than in a traditional prep schoolcircuit. After eliminating its girl’s program a few years ago, the school now welcomes between 75 and 100student-athletes per year.

Bayley Harewood - Great Britain U18 TryoutsBest of luck to student Bayley Harewood, who is currently trying out for the Great Britain U18 squad. Bayley has 12 points in 22 games for Midget White this season. Bayley doesn't turn 16 until the summer, so getting an invite to the U18 team is a huge accomplishment and he should be very proud of his work so far and his continuing development!

Alum Gabriel Vilardi Makes Professional Hockey Debut

On November 29th, Gabriel Vilardi finally stepped onto the ice and made his professional debut with theOntario Reign of the American Hockey League, the affiliate team of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings.

Vilardi played over 15 minutes and had two shots on goal in his team’s 3-2 victory. He played in 3 moregames, registering an assist.

It’s been a long road for Vilardi, the Kings 11th overall pick from the 2017 NHL Draft. He was slated to startthe last two seasons in the Kings lineup but has been plagued by a back injury which has kept him fromplaying professional hockey until his recent debut.

Last season, once healthy, the Kings assigned him to the Ontario Hockey League where he scored well over apoint per game with the Kingston Frontenacs. This season, he has spent the early part of the year rehabbingand is currently on a conditioning stint with the Reign to get him back up to pace.

Vilardi is considered a top prospect within the Kings organization and is among the top prospects in the NHL aswell. His first game is without a doubt a positive sign for Vilardi and the Kings, and a step in the right directiontoward making his NHL debut in the near future.

Gabriel was recently named to the Team Canada U20 National Team, but had to withdraw because ofcontinuing injury trouble.

Options after Minor Hockey

Last week, CIHA Hockey Director Andre Savage, did a presentation on what to expect after minor hockey.

Andre discussed what are the options depending if you are a Canadian, U.S. or International student-athlete.He also talked about different leagues, different levels and most importantly we talked about what should bethe expectations for every player that is looking to advance to the next level of hockey. Each player has theirown window of opportunity and it is important to maximize each opportunity that is given and make the best ofit. Fortunately for our players they are able to do that every day.

Recently, one of our coaches found a great reading this week and it actually touched a lot on what wasdiscussed in the presentation. It’s a great message for our players who have the goal to play at a higher level. It has been posted in different areas of the campus for motivation and to put things in perspective for thestudents.

Concussion Presentation

Last Friday, our Athletic Therapist Marie-Pierre Neron, had the opportunity to present to our coaches, houseparents and staff helpful concussion resources as well as the new CIHA Concussion Policy. Concussions insports have been given much more attention in the last few years leading to new research and evolvingapproaches. The right education in regards to sport related concussions is key to provide the safestenvironment for our athletes. We recognize the importance of concussions and the impact of well determinedguidelines for the best care and success of our student-athletes.

L I F E .A number of our boys took the evening off on November 29th to relax and head to LaserQuest in Ottawa. Thegroup was divided into teams with the objective to rack up as many points as possible. It was a great way forthe boys to unwind and take some time off campus.
