Source: TU Website Moscow, Tezpur University research helps Cancer Surgeons In collaboration with researchers from Assams Tezpur University, Russian sci- entists have developed a substance-based cobra venom and quantum dots that can glow and help surgeons see the boundaries of cancerous tumour. Surgeons need to see the boundaries of the cancer because the more precisely the boundary is marked, the more effective the operation would be. The researchers synthe- sised the substance from snake venom alpha-neurotoxins and semiconductor flu- orescent nanoparticles, Sputnik news agency reported. Researchers from Rus- sias National University of Science and Technology MISIS (NUST MISIS) cre- ated a unique hybrid compound (conjugate) consisting of two molecules with different characteristics – alpha-neurotoxins derived from Thai cobra venom and semiconductor fluorescent quantum nanoparticles of cadmium selenide, the so-called quantum dots. These compounds can be used to create medical test systems that visualise some types of malignant neoplasm, simply known as can- cer. The researchers from Assam analysed the cytotoxicity of alpha-neurotoxins, nerve growth factors, and their conjugates with fluorescent nanocrystals in vari- ous types of cells. In the study, researchers used a unique characteristic of toxins the selective interaction with cancer markers to visualise the tumour. The com- pound reaches the infected organ with the blood flow and marks the entire boundary of the tumour with fluorescent nanoparticles, which lights up when irradiated with UV light, which the human eye cannot see. TU faculty Prof. N. S Islam awarded prestigious INSA Teacher Award

Professor Nashreen S Islam of Department of Chemical Sciences, Tezpur University, has been awarded the prestigious Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Teacher Award for the year 2016, for her excellent contribution to Chemistry education.

Release of Library Newsletter @ NACLIN-2016

The maiden issue of Library Newsletter was released during Na-tional Convention on Knowledge, Library and Information Net-working (NACLIN-2016) National conference on 28th October 2016. It was released by eminent experts in the filed of Library and Information Science like Prof. Sanjay Singh, Prof. A. R. D. Prasad, Prof. N. Lahkar, Dr. H. K. Kaul, Dr. Mukesh Saikia, Prof. Jagatar Singh, Ms. Jo Webb, Dr. Uma Devnath, Prof. A. S. Chandel, Dr. M. Eqbal and opened in the presence of all partici-pants. It is now available online.

Current Awareness Service (CAS) is the dissemination of up-to-date information to the users and keep them well informed. It is a system of getting knowledge on recent development and more particularly it focus on the special interest of the individual. It is a device for alerting users towards latest developments and new publications acquired by the libraries/information centers. The main objectives of Current Awareness Ser-vice is to inform the users about new acquisitions in their libraries.

In order to keep users well informed about the latest additions, presently the following kinds of Current Awareness Services are being provided by the Central Library, Tezpur University.

Monday Moring: " Monday Morning" is a weekly e-News service of Central Li-brary, Tezpur University. "Monday Morning" news service has been published on every Monday in the library website and information is sent to all users by group mail. It mainly covers news on Institution highlights, Research & Development, Sci-ence & Technology, Education, Business & Economy, Editorials, National & Interna-tional, North-East, Environment and Sports. The main objective of this news service is to inform all users with latest information about the above said areas.

InfoJ: " InfoJ" is information about newly ar r ived pr int journals to the Central Library, Tezpur University. It also provides current content of print journals. The list of newly acquired print journals after technical processing are extracted from the Li-brary Automation Software “Libsys” and then prepared InfoJ that contains links to its current content. It is published in the Library website and information regarding this is sent to all users by group mail. The frequency of publication of InfoJ is monthly. The main purpose of InfoJ is to inform all users that library received the print jounrals in a particular month that are listed in InfoJ.

InfoGranth: " InfoGranth" is information about newly ar r ived Books to the Central Library, Tezpur University. The list of newly arrived books to the library af-ter technical processing is extracted from the Library Automation Software “Libsys” and then prepared InfoGranth. It is then published in the library website and infor-mation regarding this is sent to all users by group mail. The frequency of publication of InfoGranth is monthly. The main purpose of InfoGranth is to inform all users that library received the books in a particular month that are listed in InfoGranth.

URKUND is a plagiarism detection software and is being successfully used at universities and colleges all around the world. URKUND's sys-tem checks all documents against three central source areas such as (i) The Internet (ii) Published material such as Journals, Books etc. (iii) Previously submitted student material (e.g. memoranda, case studies and examination works). URKUND never determines what a plagiarism is, but Urkund compares textual similarity and subject similarity. Tezpur University research community uses URKUND and its usage statistics for the year 2016 is given below in both tabular and graphical form.

Glimpses of NACLIN-2016 @ Tezpur University

Training /Workshop/Conference @ Central Library, TU

Central Library, Tezpur University in collaboration with DELNET (Developing Library Network), New Delhi organized 19th National Convention on Knowledge, Library and Information Networking (NACLIN 2016) from October 26-28, 2016 at KBR Auditorium, Tezpur University on the theme “Smart Libraries and Inspired Librarians: Managing New Technologies, Digital Content and Service”.

This National Convention was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Vice President of India Shri M Hamid Ansari, on October 26, 2016 at 12 noon at KBR Auditorium, Tezpur University. The Inaugural Session was presid-ed over by Hon’ble, Governor of Assam and Chancellor, Tezpur University, Shri Banwarilal Purohit. The Guests of Honour include Hon’ble Irrigation Minister of Assam, Shri Ranjit Dutta and Hon’able Member of Parliament, Tezpur Constituency, Shri Ram Prasad Sharma. The welcome address was given by Prof. Mihir Kanti Chaudhuri, Vice-Chancellor, Tezpur University and the introductory address was given by Dr H. K. Kaul, Director, DELNET, New Delhi. The Conference proceedings and Souvenir were released by Honour-able Chief Guest. Also the newly constructed Academic Building for Humanities & Social Science, Tezpur University and NACLIN Exhibition inaugurated electronically by the Honourable Chief Guest. The presi-dential address was given by the Hon’ble Shri Banawarilal Purohit, Governor of Assam & Chancellor, Tezpur University. Finally, the vote of thanks was given by Dr. Sangeeta Kaul, DELNET & Co-organizing Secretary, NACLIN-2016.

There were over 160 registered participants around the country participated in this conference. Besides, the Organizers have invited good number of distinguished library and information science experts from differ-ent parts of the country and also invited Ms. Jo Webb, FCLIP FRSA, National Teaching Fellow, University of East London & Trustee, Chartered Institute of Library & Information Science Professionals (CILIP), UK. An exhibition showcasing various library/technology related products was organized during the con-vention for three days. The main objective of NACLIN 2016 was to help the participants to know about the current day tools & technologies prevalent in transforming the libraries as “Smart Libraries” and also to motivate and enhance the image of the LIS professionals and to inspire them to serve the users well.

The 3-Day National conference then divided into 8 no. of technical sessions and 2 panel discussions, chaired and co-chaired by eminent experts in the field of Library & Information Science. The various is-sues and trends in technology used in Libraries have been discussed during the conference. In Day 1, the expert panel discussed on “Promoting Critical Thinking and Academic Writing Skills” and then the publish-er Taylor & Francis organized a quiz creating awareness about copyright, open access, publishing ethics, etc. In the evening, a melodious cultural programme was organized by the students of Tezpur University, Tezpur. In Day 2, there were five technical sessions followed by poster presentation among participants and presentation by the conference organizers: DELNET, New Delhi & Central Library, Tezpur University, Tezpur. In the evening, a melodious cultural programme was organized by ICCR, Guwahati. In Day 3, there were 3 technical sessions and a panel discussion, followed by the release of maiden issue “Library Newslet-ter” of Central Library, Tezpur University.

The Valedictory function started with the welcome address by Dr. Mukesh Saikia, Organizing Secretary, NACLIN 2016 & University Librarian, Tezpur University, Tezpur. The conference report was presented by the Rapporteur-General Dr. Sangeeta Kaul. Finally, the vote of thanks was given by Dr. Monnawer Eqbal, Coordinator, NACLIN 2016 & Deputy Librarian, Tezpur University, Tezpur. Then the participation certifi-cates were distributed to all participants.

At the end, Dr H K Kaul, Director, DELNET, Dr Mukesh Saikia, Organizing Secretary, Dr Sangeeta Kaul, Co-organizing Secretary and Dr. Monnawer Eqbal, Coordinator, NACLIN 2016 acknowledged the support received from the local organizing committee & student volunteers and expressed gratitude to Chairpersons, Rapporteurs, authors of the papers, commercial vendors, and all the fellow participants for their active par-ticipation in making the event a grand success.

(Promotion of Library Automation and Networking in North-Eastern Region) during 09-11 No-vember, 2016 jointly organized by North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya and Information &

Library Network (INFLIBNET), Gujarat at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. Theme of

the convention was “Disruptive Innovations for Libraries: Adopt Adapt and Evolve”.

Dr. Monawwer Eqbal, Deputy Librarian presented a paper titled “Perceptions and Level of Ser-

vice Quality in Central University Libraries in India: A Study” in PLANNER-2016

(Promotion of Library Automation and Networking in North-Eastern Region) during 09-11 No-vember, 2016 jointly organized by North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya and Information & Library Network (INFLIBNET), Gujarat at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong.

Mr. Rituraj Borkakoti, Library Trainee presented a paper titled “Issues and Challenges of Automation in

the College Libraries of Guwahati” in PLANNER-2016 (Promotion of Library Automation and

Networking in North-Eastern Region) during 09-11 November, 2016 jointly organized by North East-ern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya and Information & Library Network (INFLIBNET), Gujarat at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong.

Prof. Yusuf Kalyango, Director , Ohio University, USA have visited Central Library, Tezpur University and interacted with Library staff and also visited different sections of the Library. He was accompanied with Dr. Biren Das, Registrar, Tezpur University.

Prof. Santosh Panda, IGNOU, New Delhi visited Central Library, Tezpur University. He visited each and every section of the library. His feedback on library was: Amazed to see excel-lent developments and facilitation at the Central Library. Students, faculties, friends should look into the online resources and services of the library including the online Thesis Repository.

Dr. Rajesh S Pande (with one of his faculty), Pr incipal, Shr i Ramdeo Baba College of En-gineering & Management, Nagpur, Maharashtra have visited Central Library, Tezpur Universi-ty. He visited each and every section of the library. His comment on library was: excellent li-brary and given best compliments to the library.

Bhaskar Baruah, IAS (Retired) and his wife visited Central Library, Tezpur University. His com-ment on library was: My wife and I were very impressed by the large collection of Books, Jour-nals and other online facilities.

Indu Bhusan, Scientific Assistant-E, RRCAI, Indore, MP have visited Central Library,Tezpur University. He also visited different section of the library. His comment on library was: excellent work done on web 2.0 technology and its Institutional Repository is also very nice.
