Patent Office issues draft manual on ProceduresAs the number of Patent infringement related cases increasing in all the sectors, the Controller General of Patents, Designs &Trademarks isplanning to come out with a manual of Patent Practice and Procedure. The move is to bring more transparency in the processes followed inawarding Patents. The new manual is being aimed at creating awareness about the practices and procedures followed by Patent Office forprocessing of Patent applications in the Country.

The Indian Patent Office approved a record number of 15,262 Patents duringtne year 2007- 08.This is more than twice the number of Patentsgranted during the previous year.The number of Patents granted during 2007-2008, first year of the II th fiveyear plan compares well with thetotal number of Patents granted during the entire 10th five year plan period. The Patent filingsalso crossed the 35,000 mark during 2007-2008.The Indian Patent Office has also introduced the facilityfor e-filingof applications from July2007.

Geographical Indications Profile

Navara Rice-A hope for Cancer patientsMolecular studies conducted by a team of Scientists from the KeralaAgriculture University on 'njavara rice' have indicated the presence of agene fragment encoding a protein which is reported to have antj.carcinogenic property, e~pecially against breast cancer. This protein,christened Bowman- BirkTrypsin inhibitor protein, is also known.to possess. anti- inflammatory and anti- allergic properties in animals and isreported to be capable of imparting resistance to fungal pathogens ahqpests in crops. Even though the protein had earlier been isolated fromfew other crops, it has not been identified sofarin any other rice variety of the Country. .

Recognition for 'Palakkadan Matta' and 'Navata' dce

Two unique rice varieties ofthe Palakkad district of Ketala, 'Palakkadan Matta'and the medicinal 'Navara rice' have received the GeographicalIndications registry. This is the first time thattWo rice varieties of the State. nave received GI registry.The registration for navara rice was

obtained by the Navara Rice Farmers Society near Chittur.lwo varieties of Navara, the medicinal rice us~d in Ayurveda treatment, havesecured registration. They are black glumed and golden yellow glumed Navara rice.The popular rice variety of 'Palakkadan Matta' has alsosecured registration. Palakkadan Matta Farmers Producer Company bet has become the registered proprietor of the G.IPalakkadan matta rice.
