What is Volumatic? Volumatic is a large volume spacer device which helps you get the best from your medication when using your metered dose inhaler (MDI). How does it do this? Volumatic helps to get more of the medicine down to your lungs by creating fine particles which are more suited to delivering medicine to the target area. This means less medicine is absorbed into the rest of the body and can lower the risk of side effects. Place the mouthpiece between your teeth and close your lips around the mouthpiece to form a seal but do not bite it. Do not cover the side holes with your lips as this will stop the valve from working. 6. Release a puff of medicine. Straight away take one deep breath or 5 steady breaths to make sure the medicine goes into your lungs. You do not need to remove the device from your mouth to breathe out. The mouthpiece valve will click/rattle as you breathe in and out – if you can’t hear this tilt the device up at an angle and try again. 7. Hold your breath and remove the device from your mouth. Continue holding your breath for a few seconds or as long as is comfortable. Breathe out. 8. After use, remove the inhaler from the device. Replace the mouthpiece cover to keep out dust and fluff. Do not squirt all your puffs in to the Volumatic at once and then breathe them in. You must inhale one puff at a time. If you need to take more than one puff, remove the inhaler and repeat steps 4-7. If you use more than one type of inhaler then repeat from step 2, waiting for 30 seconds before taking each puff. How to use your Volumatic Spacer device

1. Line up the notch on one half of the device with the slot on the other to fit the two halves of your Volumatic together.

2. Take the mouthpiece cover off the inhaler and check to ensure it is clean and free of objects. Shake the inhaler 4 or 5 times to ensure contents are well mixed.

3. Fit the inhaler into the device by slotting into the hole opposite the mouthpiece. Check Volumatic mouthpiece to ensure it is clean with no obstructions.

4. Hold the device as shown. Breathe out as far as is comfortable.

Volumatic TLCKeeping your spacer clean will help you to get the full benefit of your medicine(s) each time you use it.

If it’s a new spacer, clean it before you use it for the first time, then once a week afterwards dependent upon frequency of use.

All spacers should be replaced every 6-12 months.

1. Gently pull apart the two halves of your Volumatic. Do not take the valve apart.

2. Wash the Volumatic in warm water which can contain mild detergent or a sterilising solution. If there is film around the valve use a soft toothbrush or bottle brush to clean it off – as long as your valve still moves when you breathe in and out the deposit will not affect the working of your Volumatic.

3. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Leave the parts to air-dry at room temperature until completely dry. Do not rub the inside of your Volumatic with a cloth or polish as this causes static which can affect the medicine. Do not put your device in a heated place to dry more quickly.

4. Store your Volumatic in its carton to keep clean.
