AROUND THE DISTRICT

Enterprising Clubs in our District are involved with a large number of innovative projects. Here are a couple.

BRUTHEN LIONS

The members of the Bruthen Lions Club proudly sell delicious hot doughnuts at the town’s monthly community market, not only as a means of boosting the Club’s activities account, but also to heighten its profile in the community. The market also offers fresh foods, fruit and vegetables, plants & trees, jewellery, refreshments, natural soaps, pre-loved clothing, homemade crafts, soy candles and so much more.

The Bruthen Community Market in full swing.

METUNG FUN RUN

This event is held annually through the partnership of the Metung Primary School and the Lions Club of Metung Inc.

Funds raised through this event have been divided between the running and maintenance costs of the Metung Community Bus and the Community Bus Replacement sinking fund. Any surplus is donated to the Metung Primary

School to assist them in purchasing much needed equipment.

NOW FOR SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT

Harry was sick and tired of being constantly badgered by his wife Barbara for spending so much time at the pub.

Hoping it would help matters, Harry invited Barbara along with him the next time went to his local.

“So what would you like?” Harry cordially asked, as she took her seat next to him. “Oh I don’t know” Barbara

replied, “I guess I’ll have the same thing as you.”

“OK” said Harry to the bartender, “we’ll take two Johnny Walker’s on the rocks!”

Barbara barely took a sip of the drink before she started gagging “Oh my gosh! Get me a cup of water! This stuff

is horrible! How do you drink this garbage?”

“See?” said Harry “and you think I come here just to have a good time?!“

*****

A cop pulled over a car and finds a young couple in the front seat. “Where’s your seat belt young man?” asked

the cop. “Oh, I just took if off now when you were walking up to the car”, responded the man. “No you didn’t!”

exclaimed his wife, “you never wear your seat belt!”. A little taken aback, the cop asked to see his license.

“Damn!” cried the man, “I must have left it at home!” “Yeah right!” screamed his wife, “You know it expired 3

months ago!” At a loss for words, the cop asked the woman “are you always so tough on him?!” “No” responded

the young woman, “only when he had too much to drink!”.

*****

Jim’s car is swerving all over the road so a cop pulls him over, “Step out of the car” says the cop, “I am going to

need you to take a breathalyzer test.” “I can’t”, Jim responds “You see I have very bad asthma, so the

breathalyser could set off an attack.”

“Alright,” says the cop, “then you’re going to have to take a blood test.” “Can’t do that either,” Jim responds, “I

am a hemophiliac, if a wound is opened, I won’t stop bleeding, and I could bleed to death.”

“Ok,” the cop answers “then I will need a urine sample.” “Sorry,” says Jim “I also have diabetes, so taking a urine

sample could push my sugar count really low.”

“Fine, so just come on out, and walk a straight line for me.” “Can’t do that either” responds Jim. “Why not?”

demanded the exasperated cop. “Well, because I’m drunk!”

UNUSUAL THINGS OTHER LIONS CLUBS DO AROUND THE WORLD

TRALEE LIONS CLUB Tralee, made famous by the song ‘The Rose of Tralee’, is a town of some 24 thousand souls in County

Kerry, which lies in the south west of Eire, or, if you prefer, the Republic of Ireland. It has a very

active Lions Club with almost 40 members and below is some good stuff about this vibrant Club.

Cheque recipients outside the Tralee Golf Club

Tralee Lions Club celebrated its 50th year in 2016 and a golf classic resulted in a record-breaking sum for charities.

President Fergus Courtney distributed cheques totalling €20,000 raised in event which was held at Tralee Golf Club.

These funds were distributed to Fenit Life Boat, MS Society Tralee Branch, Eagle Lodge , Anam Cara, Inspired and Guide Dogs Ireland Assist Dog Program on Thursday.

Funds raised also assisted with the Tralee Community Bus trip coordinated jointly between the Lions Club and the local Community Garda.

President Fergus thanked all those who participated by way of sponsoring a team or a tee box.

He thanked Teddy Reynolds and Michael Higgins for organising the Golf Classic and highlighted particularly the contribution of Pat Crean who this year obtained additional sponsorship from his Dublin based corporate associates.

President Fergus, who will be handing over his chain of office to Brendan Kenny next week, also used the opportunity to thank all Lions Club supporters for their assistance throughout the year with other fundraising events including our annual Christmas Appeal and Table Quiz.

He thanked the Community Gardaí for their input with the annual Community Bus trip. Anne Burns replying on behalf of all the charities thanked Tralee Lions Club for their continued charitable work within the community and stressed the fact that the contributions to all the charities will make a difference to so many people’s lives not just today but into the future.

The club continues to support other local projects to include Tralee Soup Kitchen, Meals on Wheels and Hawley Park School.

To mark their 50th birthday Tralee Lions Club are organising a ‘Celebration’ music night in November with Liam O’Connor & his group. Details will be made known in due course.

LIONS INTERNATIONAL PIN TRADING CLUB AND MORE ….

Lions International Pin Trading Club members swap pins at the 2015 International Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii.

In an earlier issue of this bulletin, we looked at the Australian Lions Pin Trading Club. We now look at its big brother

Glittering squares of gold on a lapel, shaped like lions’ heads or in the outlines of states. These

emblems are colorful reminders of past accomplishments, international conventions or new friends.

Lions Clubs International pins come in all shapes and sizes today, but they were introduced in the late

1940s as disposable plastic parade giveaways. Those early emblems, called friendship pins, are now

highly sought after by pin collectors and traders.

Trying to count up all of the different pins that have been produced over the intervening decades “is

like trying to count grains of sand on a beach,” said Verle Malik of the Winchester Host Lions Club of

Virginia. Verle publishes a series of handbooks cataloging the different kinds of pins, one of several

catalogs produced by clubs and Lions around the world. Volume One of Verle’s handbook included life-

size images of pins from every state and multiple district, and Volume Two featured specialty pins:

prestige, mini, medallion, charm, stickpins, Lioness, Leo and variations on pins issued by states and

multiple districts. Volume Three included international pins.

“These are friendship pins,” said Verle. “They were initially made to help you remember the person

that gave it to you. You exchange them everywhere you go and pass them out to everyone you visit.

Once you accumulate a few of them—the pin traders will appear.”

The biggest place to trade pins is the annual International Convention, but for Lions who can’t make

it—or for Lions who want more opportunities to trade—there several large pin-swapping gatherings

held throughout the year in Virginia; Pennsylvania; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Moline, Illinois. Smaller

local swaps also occur regularly.

Pin swapping is a friendly affair, but there’s a strategy involved. “You’ve got to have pins to trade,”

said Bob Showers, longtime pin swapper from the Packwaukee Lions Club in Wisconsin. “If you go down

there with mediocre pins, you’re not going to get very many.”

Page 9: kooweerup.vic.lions.org.aukooweerup.vic.lions.org.au/files/kooweerup.vic/kwrbul Vol...STILL MORE BRAIN TEASERS 1. A little girl kicks a soccer ball. It goes 10 feet and comes back

9

There are a number of official pin trading clubs within Lions. According to Bill Smith, the founding

president of the Pin Traders Club of Virginia, they’re eager to bring in new collectors. “When we find

out a guy’s a new pin trader, he leaves [the swap] with far more pins than he came in with. We’ll give

him a handful of pins. We’re just trying to hook him.”

Lions collect and trade more than pins. At the 1951 international convention in Atlantic City, New

Jersey, the Lions International Stamp Club was officially chartered. Peter Keller, founder of the

LISC and director of the American Stamp Dealers Association, authored a regular stamp collecting

column in LION Magazine, calling stamp collecting “the King of Hobbies and the Hobby of Kings.”

Within a year, the LISC had members from five countries, collecting and trading rare or interesting

stamps of all kinds. Since 1940, countries such as Cuba, the Philippines and Nicaragua have issued

commemorative stamps featuring the Lions Clubs International emblem and past international

presidents like Finis Davis of Louisville, Kentucky, who served from 1960-61, and Clarence Sturm

from Manawa, Wisconsin, who served from 1959-60.

As with anything that Lions are involved in, fun and fellowship leads to service. In 2008, the Lions

International Trading Pin Club led a fundraising effort among fellow pin traders and presented a

check for US$100,000 to Campaign SightFirst II at the International Convention in Minneapolis the

following year.

Trading pins and stamps is a hobby that’s entertaining and a celebration of Lions’ dedication to

service. “I don’t golf, I don’t bowl,” said Bill Smith. “Pins are my passion. And I’m not unique in that.”

A LITTLE BIT OF LOCAL HISTORY

Construction in 1923 of the Koo Wee Rup Hospital in Station Street

(Photo courtesy of the KWR Swamp Historical Society)

On May 24, 1923 the Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital was opened in Station Street. It was opened by the Shire President, Cr E.Simpson Hill. During the ceremony, Mrs Margaret Hamilton officially opened a ward in honor of the late Kitty Trounson (sometimes referred to as Townson). Kitty was an original member of the

Bush Nursing committee. Mrs D.McNamara donated a furnished cot in the honor of her son, Jack. Mrs Appleford also donated a cot. The Hospital could accommodate medical, surgical and midwifery patients.

Hall before the 1923 extension.

The Memorial Hall used to stand between the Presbyterian Church and the Historical Society in Rossiter Road. The first hall had been opened on this site in April 1902 – the same year that the original Catholic Church was opened. The Koo-Wee-Rup hall was of weather board and it was extended in 1919. The brick front and other rooms were added in 1923-24 and it was renamed the Memorial Hall to honour the First World War soldiers.

WHAT DO THOSE ACRONYMS MEAN?

Like many other large organisations, Lions has its fair share of acronyms. It may make life easier for those who

know what they mean, but for the uninitiated they can be a problem. Over the next few bulletins we’ll look at some

of these acronyms, starting with perhaps the most well-known of all.

LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION (LCIF)

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) was founded in 1968 to take the mission of Lions Clubs International to new heights by tackling global problems, as well as assisting Lions with large-scale local humanitarian projects. LCIF’s history is filled with high-impact projects, meaningful partnerships and the kindness and efforts of Lions. With continued support, we can count on LCIF to continue and expand programs to improve lives around the world far into the future. 1968 LCIF is incorporated as a Foundation. 1972 LCIF awards first grant of US$5,000 for flooding in South Dakota, USA. 1973 The Melvin Jones Fellowship program is created as a way for donors of US$1,000 to be recognized. 1984 LCIF begins partnering with Quest International to implement the youth development program, Lions Quest. 1985 LCIF awards first Major Catastrophe Grant of US$50,000 for earthquake relief in Mexico. 1986 The Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship program is established to give Lions a way to extend their commitment to LCIF. 1990 SightFirst program begins and goes on to prevent serious vision loss of more than 30 million people. 1991 Campaign SightFirst is launched to raise funds to initiate the SightFirst program. 1997 LCIF partners with the China State Council Coordination Committee on Disability for SightFirst China Action. 1999 LCIF embarks on a partnership with The Carter Center to combat river blindness and trachoma in Latin America and Africa. ART, CRAFTS & PATCHWORK SHOW What an outstanding success the Arts, Crafts & Patchwork Show was on Saturday 24th June. None of this would have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our new President, Sheryl Blay, who had the drive and commitment to make the whole thing happen. What a fantastic advertisement for our Lions Club! Here are some photos taken during the event.

100 YEARS ON

It so happened that our first meeting in June fell on the 7th day of that month, which co-

incidentally was exactly 100 years after the formation of Lions Clubs International in

Chicago – 7th June 1917.

To celebrate both this co-incidence and Lions 100th year, Immediate Past President Ron did

the honours by providing not one, but two suitably decorated birthday cakes.

This special moment was recorded in the photo, below, taken by one of our newest members,

Jacqui, who, magically, also appears in the photo – the things you can do with modern

technology!

Don’t forget that the first Club meeting will be on Wednesday 2nd August at the Koo Wee Rup Bowls

Club. This will also be the Club’s Annual General Meeting, at which we will need to ratify the

financials contained in the Club’s annual report, so a return can be prepared and submitted to

Consumer Affairs Victoria to comply with the Club’s incorporation responsibilities.

SECOND MEETING OF AUGUST

The second meeting of the month will be held, as usual, at the Chandelier Café, Koo Wee Rup on 16th

August.
