    VOLLEYBALL

    Volleyball is an Olympicteam sport in which twoteams of six plyers areseparated by a net (2.43).

    The ball is usually playedwith the hands or arm butplayers also can use any partof the body.

    Nowadays the rules are beenmodified to increasespectacle.

    VOLLEYBALL

    Volleyball was created by aP.E. teacher (W.G. Morgan) atYMCA, Massachussets.

    He wanted to create game thatcan be played on a court duringthe cold winter.

    The first written rules byMorgan consisted of nine

    players with a larger court. Volleyball became Olympic

    sport in 1964, howeverwomen volleyball was notpart of Olympics until 1972.

    RULES

    The complete rules of the volleyball are extensive, but ingeneral, play proceeds as follows: Points are scored bygrounding the ball on the opponents' court, or when theopponent commits a fault.

    The first team to reach 25 points wins the set and the firstteam to win three sets wins the match.

    Teams can contact the ball no more than three times beforethe ball crosses the net, and consecutive contacts must bemade by different players.

    Each team consists of 6 players with two attacking , one settingand three defending. These players rotate their positionthroughout the game.

    ROTATION

    A volley ball rotationconsits on teams willrotate when they win the

    serve. Players must rotate in a

    clockwise manner, if theydon't do this, they lost

    the serve. There must be 6 players

    on each side.

    SCORING

    When the ball contacts thefloor or a team mades anerror, a team won a point.

    the team that won the pointserves for the next point.

    The match lasts for threegames of 25 points. the team

    wins when there is two pointdifference.Ex 25-23/ 26-24.

    VOLLEYBALL SKILLS

    Volleyball is a verytechnical sport andthere are six basicskills that you have tocontrol:

    Serve, pass, set, block,attack and dig.

    SERVICE

    There are two types ofserve, underarm andoverarm.

    Both refers to wether theplayer strikes the ball.

    Underarm serve isconsidered more easy to

    recieve so is rarely used inhigh level competition.

    Service is considered thefirst attacking hit of a team.

    PASS

    A control pass is usuallythe first contact made bya team.

    It is a defensive contactusually made by adefender player.

    It is made with theforearm to prepare forthe set pass.

    SET

    This is usually the secondcontact in order toprepare the ball for the

    attack. It is made with your hands

    spreads using your finfersfor contact.

    The player who made theset is called setter.

    Blockade and Finishing touch (attack)

    The attack is usually the thirdcontact. The aim of attacking isto land the ball on theopponents court.

    It is a powerful hit made by theattackers.

    Bloking refers to the actiontaken by the players standing at

    the net to stop the opponentsattack. It is usually done by twoplayers but in high levelcompetition we can find atripleblock.

    THE COURT

    The game is played on a volleyballcourt 18 meters long and 9meters wide, divided into two 99m halves by a net. the top of the

    net is 2.43 meters above thecenter of the court for men'scompetition, and 2.24 meters forwomen's competition .

    There is a line 3 meters from thenet which is considered theattack line.

    PLAYERS SPECIALIZATION

    We can find five positions:Setter: Have the task to organized the offensive. He have to put the ball withthe second touch in the right position to the attackers.

    Liberos: They wear differents colors and play as a defenders to receive theattack or serve. Lbero means free as they have the ability to substitute for anyother player during the play.

    Middle blockers or hitters: They perform a very fast attacks near the setter,they are specialized in blocking. Every team must have two middle hitters.

    Outside hitters:They are the most consistent hitter, in profesional teamstherea are two outside hitters too.

    Defenders:They have the task to defend the attack of the other team and toput up a good ball to the setter, usually by a pass contact.
