The No. 10 Gators and Huskers will clash at 7 p.m. (ET) at Matthew Knight Arena in the first match of the 2016 installment of the VERT Challenge, hosted this year by the University of Oregon. UF will face the home-team Ducks Saturday at 9 p.m. ET. With several question marks to be answered, and a whole new squad from a year ago -- one that features nine newcomers and nine returners entering 2016 -- the Gators enter the season with one goal in mind: to learn a lot along the way and to be playing their best volleyball come December. Florida boasts three returning All-American starters in defensive dandy Rhamat Alhassan, lone senior Alex Holston and hot hitting outside Carli Snyder. With their home venue, the Stephen C. O’Connell Center, un- dergoing a $64.5 million renovation this year (set for grand opening in December), the Orange and Blue will play three weeks on the road -- a total of eight matches -- to start the campaign before opening at home Sept. 16. That stretch features not only three road tournaments, but two top-25 clashes, first with the Husk- ers, then with Sunshine State foe and preseason No. 17 FSU on Sept. 14 in Seminole territory. Florida has played teams ranked No. 1 on 15 different occasions in program history and is 2-13 in those match- ups. Friday’s match will be the second between the Gators and Huskers with Nebraska ranked No. 1 (Dec. 10, 2005). Three times the Gators have opened their season with the No. 1-ranked team: 1996 (Hawai’i), 1999 (Penn State) and 2003 (Southern California). More on UF vs. No. 1 teams on page three. The Gators’ roster features veteran setter Allie Monserez, whose redshirt comes off after transferring to Florida from South Carolina in summer 2015, as well as freshman setter Cheyenne Huskey, a 2015-16 Under Armour High School First Team All-American from Columbus, Texas. Bolstered by the transfer of junior defensive specialist Caroline Knop, AKA ‘CK’, the UF roster features a wealth of depth with seven high-quality back-row players, including veterans Sam Dubiel and Lindsey Rog- ers, as well as incoming freshman high school All-American Allie Gregory. Another redshirt comes off for the high hopper and hard-hitting junior outside Shainah Joseph, who alongside Snyder, leads two freshmen outsides in early enrollee Mia Sokolowski and Morgyn Greer, who was invited to USA Volleyball’s Junior National Team tryouts this spring. Team captain Alhassan and sophomore Taelor Kellum will tutor two new middles in 6-8 Rachael Kramer -- the tallest Gator in Florida history -- and Desoto native Darrielle King, cousin to two former Florida All- Americans Nicole and Amber McCray. ABOUT FLORIDA The Gators finished the 2015 season 25-7 overall, 13-5 in the SEC (fourth). UF made its 26th NCAA Tourna- ment appearance and owns the fourth-longest streak in the nation for consecutive NCAA appearances. Florida advanced to the program’s 15th Elite Eight last season, owns 21 Southeastern Conference Cham- pionships and is led by renowned head coach Mary Wise, who enters her 26th season in 2016. The 2016 campaign is upon us and the Florida Gators will waste no time opening with a challenging sched-ule, one that features defending National Champion and preseason No. 1 Nebraska first on the slate.

O’Connell Center, un-dergoing a $64.5 million renovation this year (set for grand opening in December), the Orange and Blue will play three weeks on the road -- a total of eight matches -- to start the campaign before opening at home Sept. 16. That stretch features not only three road tournaments, but two top-25 clashes, first with the Husk-ers, then with Sunshine State foe and preseason No. 17 FSU on Sept. 14 in Seminole territory.

Florida has played teams ranked No. 1 on 15 different occasions in program history and is 2-13 in those match-ups. Friday’s match will be the second between the Gators and Huskers with Nebraska ranked No. 1 (Dec. 10, 2005). MATCHES 1 & 2

The architect of one of the most storied programs in NCAA Division I volleyball history begins her 26th season at the helm of the Florida program. The accomplishments of Mary Wise since being named head coach of the Gators in 1991 have been nothing short of unprecedented. Take 21 SEC titles, including 18 straight from 1991-2008 -- the record for most consecutive conference titles by a program in the nation, then add 25 straight NCAA Tournament bids, seven Final Four appearances, 14 SEC Coach of the Year honors and a trip to the National Championship in 2003.

Wise has coached all 35 Florida All-Americans in Gator Volleyball history. Those 35 athletes have racked up 90 All-America honors. Twelve players have been named SEC Athlete of the Year 18 times since 1992.

The list of achievements is long and cements the fact that if there has been one constant to Wise’s 25-year tenure at Florida -- its unparalleled success.

Consider this: Wise became the first coach in NCAA history to win 100 consecutive games, the first to win 130 consecutive regular-season conference matches and the only coach ever to win 90 percent of her matches in her first 20 seasons at one school. She is the nation’s winningest coach since the 1991 season with 767 career victories (entering 2016) to her credit since her hire at Florida. Those accomplishments led USA Volleyball to bestow on Wise the title of “All-Time Great Coach” in 2006.

Summer 2016 was a banner international year for the Gators. Two of the most prominent Florida volleyball players in program history, Kelly Murphy (’11) and Aury Cruz (’03), became the first indoor Olympians in program history. Murphy, a four-time All-American, represented Team USA in the Rio Olympics, while Cruz, a three-time All-American at UF, guided Puerto Rico to its first-ever Olympic berth before hanging up her jersey and retiring after 18 years with the Puerto Rico National Team.

In 2015, the Gators racked up a 25-7 record and finished the SEC schedule at 13-5, marking the program’s 25th straight 25-win season, all under Wise. Florida advanced to the Elite Eight for the 15th time in school history and led the country in hitting efficiency with a .313 clip. Add five All-America honors, including first teamer Rhamat Alhassan.

The 2014 season was another banner year for Wise and the Gators as Florida cruised to its 13th undefeated SEC season and 21st SEC Championship (28-4, 18-0 SEC). Wise hit another career milestone with her 800th career victory in dominating fashion with a 3-0 blanking of the then-No. 6 USC Trojans in L.A. to become the only active female Division I head coach to reach the milestone. The Gators boasted the nation’s hitting efficiency leader in Alhassan (.458) for the third straight year, as Alhassan and Alex Holston were the SEC Freshman and Player of the Year, respectively. Wise picked up her 14th SEC Coach of the Year honor.

Wise added another coaching accolade to her resume in summer 2015, as she was named head coach of the USA Volleyball World University Games squad that competed in Gwangju, South Korea.
