Happy New Year! Well, that was 2012. Here comes 2013. The world did not end! The Mayan calendar obviously missed something in the translation.

There were some significant changes in 2012 to the VW Association structure. I hope you will embrace these changes and give your continued support to the

smooth running of the Club and to the events for the benefit and enjoyment of all members.

A 2013 calendar of events is being pre-pared and will be out to all members by the end of January.

Keep on VW-ing. Nino

Story and Pics by Patricia Curran Chips and Val Fearon are from Marnoo, a very small country town in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, and they drove throughout Tasmania as a test for their Australia wide tour in an original 1958 Beetle to raise money for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation. Unfortunately the VW Club of Tasmania received their Tasmanian itinerary with short notice to enable us to coincide with a local event, however the Club donated $100 for the fundraising efforts.

Peter and I had Chips and Val over for afternoon tea on the 10 October and wished them well for the remainder of their time in Tasmania and for their upcoming journey around Australia. Chips and Val were provided with some Club stick-ers and a Club cap which he was thrilled with. Chips was invited to Basker-ville Raceway to “rattle the tin” for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation charity at he Historic Car Races the following weekend. He was certainly a character and we had to admire his resolve to travel the country for a very good cause.

I trust you all had a very happy and safe Christmas and New Year. During 2012 we had a BBQ, Picnic @ Ross, a surprise breakfast, a counter meal, Shannons Car and Bike Expo, Take Your Tops Off, Forcett Hot Rod Show & Car and Bike Expo, our annual Show & Shine at Claremont Village Green and Christmas Dinner at Sublime R estaurant. A couple of events were cancelled due to a lack of attendance and we had fewer numbers at our meetings. A big thank you to those members who participated in our events throughout 2012 I also thank our sponsors for their continued support of the club: Bocchino Motors, Jackson Volkswagen and Shannons Insurance. I would like to thank Aeshlie for her contribution with the

Newsletter again in 2012 and Simon for his continuing work with our website. Our membership for 2012 was 33 down from 38 in 2011. Renewal of membership is now due and your invoice along with a Membership Application/Renewal are enclosed. Please complete the Membership Application/Renewal and enclose it along your payment and forward to Volkswagen Association of Tasmania, 89 Albert Rd, Moonah 7009. In September, I advised Nino that I would not be continuing as Secretary/Treasurer. I took on the role of editor around April/May 2001 and in January 2002 was appointed Secretary/Treasurer and Peter appointed Vice President. It has been a great experience working with

Nino and the various committee members over that time. It was also a very busy time when we held the two very successful national events, Shannons National Cavalcade of Volkswagens, celebrating 50 years of Volkswagen in Australia in 2003 and the 38th National Bug-In held over Easter 2007. I felt it was time to hand over the reigns to someone new and Sebastian Grasso has taken on the role and his wife Colleen is now the editor of our Newsletter. I wish them success and hope they enjoy it as much as I did. The calendar has been set to start the year off and I hope you will come along and enjoy some events with the club this year. Forcett Hot Rod, Car and Bike Expo, 11 November 2012 Peter and I travelled to Forcett in our 1960 Green Beetle with the Teardrop Caravan and were parked at the rear of the paddock. It was a fine day and the cars just kept arriving. We wandered about to have a look at the various stalls on the perimeter of the grounds and were on the lookout for any other club mem-bers amongst the almost 500 cars that turned up on the day. We spotted Paul and Rowena’s Kom-

bi and went over for a chat. There were a couple of other Kombis on display and a nice red Polo GTI for sale. We had a sausage and onion for lunch cooked by the Post Vintage Car Club who were kept busy for most of the day with their BBQ set-up. We went back to the car and set up our table and chairs under a lovely tree out of the sun and chatted to several others who had the same idea.

We learned that Sebastian and Colleen were there for a short time in the morning but unfortu-nately we didn’t see them. A fine display of a variety of vehi-cles from classics to hot rods. Story and photos by Patricia Curran

Claremont Trash & Treasure - 18 November 2012

Story by Sebastian Grasso Photos by Pat Curran The last major event for 2012 was held at Claremont on Sunday 18 November 2012. Members turned out to show their cars and to have the chance to look for new comers to the car show scene and to meet up with old friends and enthusiasts.

The day was pleasant with slightly overcast conditions. The purpose of the Claremont Trash & Treasure is a fundraiser for the Claremont Girl Guides and the Club was happy to provide a donation of $100. Club sponsors, Jackson Volkwagen, provided for public’s viewing pleasure, tthe new Up and the latest model Passat AWD.

I had the opportunity to drive the Up and I was very impressed. The 1litre, 3 cyclinder turbo engine gives plenty of power to get about. It is also very roomy inside and the level of finish is unmistakably German. For those members present at the event, judging took place with trophies and medallions awarded.

** COMING EVENT ** The 2013 Supercheap Auto Devonport Motor Show will be held on Sunday, 24 March (a week earlier than previous years due to Easter). Any members interested can refer to the new dedicated website www.devonportmotorshow.com or via their Facebook or Twitter pages. The VW Association of Tasmania is not organizing this as a club activity, however any members interested can contact the Show organization or our Secretary, Sebastian who may be able to let you know who is planning to attend the show. Entries can be made by visiting the website (noted above).

A Club Christmas, 1 December 2013 Photos by Patricia Curran Story by Sebastian Grasso The social end to 2012 had us all enjoying a meal and beverages at The Sublime Restaurant and Bar at New Town. Members, family and friends were treated for a nominal cost by funds from the VW Association of Tasmania. A particular highlight of the even-ing was an award presentation to Patricia and Peter Curren who both received Life Time member-ship to the VW Association of Tas-mania. This award was presented in recognition of their significant

and ongoing contributions to the Association over many years. Also recognition was provided on the evening to Otto who has been supporting the VW Association of Tasmania group with his expertise of VW for many, many years. A thank you to Elise Bocchino for excelling at her pastry making skills and providing a celebratory Christmas cake which was demolished by all of the attendees. A thank you also to the staff at Sublime for their service and accommodation of our group during the busy Christmas period.
