The diagram in Figure 1 shows a place where crustal plates separate. Complete the diagram

by inserting each of the following labels in the correct matching box on the diagram.

2 Explaining volcanic activity (6 marks)

Use the diagram in Figure 1 to help you explain how volcanic activity happens at the place

labelled X on the diagram. Make at least four clear statements.

3 The story of a terrible volcanic eruption

(9 marks)

Read carefully the news extract provided. Then

answer the questions that follow:

a. Which island suffered the ‘volcanic terror’?

_______________________________________

b. The term ‘dormant’ is used in the news

extract to name one of three categories

of volcano. Name two other categories of

volcano.

c. List three results of the volcanic eruption

that are described in the news extract.

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT TEST1

Suggested marking scheme for test 1

1 Diagram on volcanic activity (5 marks)

Award one mark for each label inserted correctly

2 Explaining volcanic activity (6 marks)

Award 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 marks for up to four clear and relevant statements. These statements

might include statements such as the following:

Currents of molten rock move slowly

Currents move away from each other

Currents pull plates away from each other

Where plates separate, magma rises up to the surface

The magma causes volcanic activity

The rising magma forms mid-ocean ridges/volcanic islands/volcanic mountains.

3 The story of a terrible volcanic eruption (9 marks)

(a) ‘Montserrat’: 1 mark

(b) ‘Active, extinct’: 1 + 1 marks

(c) Three results taken from final paragraph: 2 + 2 + 2 marks

Outcomes: This assessment is designed to test the following skills: understanding, recall, selection, literacy

and basic comprehension.

GENERAL NOTE: There is nothing prescriptive about any assessment test given in this

resource pack. I have, for example, focused this particular test on volcanic activity. I have

included three questions, awarded a total of 20 marks and would suggest a period of

approximately 15 to 20 minutes for completing the test. But always feel free to reduce, change

or substitute topics, questions, marking schemes and test times according to the particular

needs, circumstances or interests of your students. Some tests are likely to be answered more

quickly than others. Provide your own timeframe for each depending on the nature of the test.

WEB RESOURCES

Web ResourcesBelow is a comprehensive web resources bank which you should find very useful in your teaching of New Complete Geography. In many cases the link leads directly to an animation or video. In some cases the link is to a website where you can find a range of resources listed by menu.

Please note that some videos and animations are created in Flash and will not run on Apple devices. As all these sources are external websites, the assets may be moved or changed by the owners. If you find a link no longer works, please search under the relevant heading. Sometimes resources are still available but have been moved on the website.

I am greatly obliged to John Hurley, who researched the web resources for this handbook.

2. https://vle.whs.bucks.sch.uk/course/index.php?categoryid=15 Click on ‘Geography Animated’ from the menu on the right-hand side of your screen. This will lead you to a page with menu on the

left-hand side of the screen as outlined below: 1 Earth Systems 2 River Systems 3 Coastal Systems 4 Atmospheric Systems 5 Glacial Systems 6 Ecosystems 7 Population (UK)

8 Global Statistics Animated 9 Useful Websites. Click on ‘Ecosystems’. Then scroll down to the section on soil. This will provide you with a menu of animations relating to soil.

3. webs.cmich.edu/resgi/ This website contains links which are organised alphabetically around the sequence of topics which might be taught in a physical

geography class. Click on ‘Earth Science Animations’ from the section entitled ‘Other Resource Links’. This in turn will bring you to a page with a menu called ‘Other Resource Links: Earth Science Animations Topics’. Click on ‘Plate Tectonics Animations’, which will provide you with a list of 13 animations for this particular topic. Clicking on each

link will in turn provide you with further animations (e.g. if you click on link No.3, ‘Continent–Continent Collision’, this will provide you with a list of 9 different animations relating to continent–continent collision.

4. http://classroom.sdmesa.net/dbarrie/cool_links.htm Click on ‘K-12 Geoscience Classroom Resources’ for relevant animations, such as ‘Plate Tectonics Animation of Mobile Continents’
