    EDITORIAL

Although life in Kouvola is quiet and

calm, our team has prepared a lot of

interesting things for you to do or, at

    least think about.

First of all, every half a year approxima-

tely 50 new exchange students come

to study in Kyamk, while our degree

students go to different countries to do

their exchange. We know how difficult

is it to choose the right university, so

starting with this issue, we launch a

new column Exchange view, in which

our exchange students will tell us about

    their home universities and compare

them with Kyamk. For those who are

only thinking about going on exchan-

ge and dont know what university to

choose, these articles will be beneficial.

Moreover, now its the right time to start

    thinking about summer internship and

write a CV, which is necessary for ap-

plication. We know that sometimes its

    really complicated to express yourself

and describe everything you can do

just in one or two pages. So we wrote

a How-to article concerning this ques-

tion and hope that this will help you

to get your dream job for this summer.

Last but not least, did you know that

5th of February is official World Nu-

tella Day? So dont forget to cook so-

mething tasty with Nutella and upload

a photo to a social network with a right

    hashtag #WorldNutellaDay :)

Home University - The Netherlands The

    Hague University

Let me tell you a little bit about my school.

Im from the Netherlands and study at the

    Hague University of Applied Sciences.

When I was initially asked to write this I

started wondering about what I actually

knew about my university. The answer was

virtually nothing. I remember that it always

looked kind of big and that I am often an-

noyed if I have to be in a certain classroom,

because it means a very long walk (lots of

stairs). I recently found out it is pretty BIG.

The numbers dont lie: the school consists of

4 campuses, has a total of more than 25 000

students and teaches more than 50 different

    bachelor programs.

The campus I go to houses over 15000

    students and my study (International

    Business and Management Studies) is

the biggest, with over 1100 students. So

my kind of big impression was right.

Now I dont know what the exact num-

bers are for Kymenlaakso University of

Applied Sciences, but its safe to say

that everything is a little bit smaller here.

Size isnt the only big contrast between our

universities. The whole way of teaching is different. For example at home you address

your lecturer with Mr. or Mrs. and you will probably never find out their first name. Someo-

ne picking up their phone in class and walking out during class is unheard of (you ask to

be excused) and maybe most important difference of all is the flexibility of teachers, so-

mething I have rarely encountered at home. We have a very strict curriculum that we fol-

low with a set list of learning materials, whereas here you learn mostly in the workshops.

The thing that has impressed me about Kyamk from the start is the availability of the

staff to answer your questions and the strong organization of the exchange mobility

(a complete file on how to prepare for and get to Kouvola). It was very reassuring for a

control freak like myself to know EXACTLY what was going to happen!

As far as first impressions go I felt like I had been dropped in the middle of nowhere

when I got off the bus, the emptiness on the way there stretches for miles in the dar-

kness. When light came everything was white and I still felt completely disoriented.

During the days that followed it was easy to find your way about, everything can be

found by following long straight paths. The only difficulty is that every turn and tunnel

looked exactly the same to me! Even though the landscape is so different, much of what

I find here is pretty familiar to my home country. The biggest difference is the people.

The Dutch are talkative and sometime slightly aggressive when it comes to dealing with

strangers. The Finns however are COMPLETELY silent; they dont even ask you to get

out of their way! They just wait, patiently, quietly and ever so nicely. The whole attitude

is very trusting and calm. Something that I am not familiar with at all! However I must

say it is a very pleasant feeling that my coat can hang in the hall and I dont have to

worry that it wont be there when I get back.

All in all Finland might just grow on me, one thing is certainthe cold will definitely

    NOT!festive set. Everybody is invited!

The spring semester has already started and only a few

months left till summer. At this time of the academic year,

senior students are looking around for an internship position

or a summer job; and fresh graduates may now start to worry

about career planning. Lets pause for a thought! Your CV is

    the first weapon helping you to beat hundreds of opponents;

and you have only less than 1 minute to catch the attention

of human resource executives. So how to make a professional

CV to impress the recruiters? Here are some secrets Insider

Student Magazine would like to share to help students and

grads survive through the CV scanning round and maximize

your chance of getting a call for an interview.

    Keep it simple and concise!

A CV must be brief. Especially for students and fresh graduates, a CV

should not exceed 2 pages and more preferably keep it to 1 page. Keep

it as concise as possible and avoid wordiness by using short sentences.

Make sure that you write with simple and direct language. Recruiters do

not expect to read a CV intensively peppered with big words, but the facts

about yourself. They may have already gotten fed up with all generic CVs.

So, leave out all the clinches and stick to the facts.

    Focus on the essentials!

Write clearly key personal details like a business card, including name,

address, phone number, email address and any professional social media

presence. As a student or a fresh graduate, youve probably been in full-

time education for a long time so your qualifications and degrees should

be your main achievement. It would be highly recommended that your

qualifications be highlighted in the first place. In case, you dont have any

work experience, try to address your course work relevant to the skills

relevant to the job. For instance, you should elaborate on various skills ac-

quired from college life such as presentation, time management, research,

ICT, etc. It would be good to say you are a fast learner and always updated

with the latest techniques and news in the specific industry.

Tailor your CV to the position!

Sell yourselfby presenting your key achievements in study and other

experience, not just responsibilities. Exclude work experience or training

which is not relevant to the specific position. Dont just simply tell, give

more result-oriented examples to persuade the recruiters, give them the

evidences. Before sending out your CV, make sure to adapt your CV to

HOW TO WRITE A GOOD CVsuit the position, correspond with the job requirements. Show your assertiveness but

dont artificially inflate it, otherwise you may get caught in the interview. Heighten your

strengths according to the specific niches and show them you have the traits of an ideal

candidate by presenting your competences clearly and logically. The employers want to

know what you can do for them.

    Show your personality!

Choose a decent font and a professional-looking layout. If you are a designer, you should

be more creative and personalized your CV the way you like it, for instance using InDe-

sign or video CV, depending on the position you are applying for. The point is that facts

should be presented in a clear and appealing way, which reflects part of your personality!

Thats the way to stand out!

    Double check and check again!

Do spell check and make sure there is no evitable spelling or grammar mistakes. Have

someone else proofread your CV to make sure that the content is clear and easy to

understand. For CV clinic, once you have made a draft of your CV, bring a paper copy

along to your student councilors, language teachers and kindly ask for their insightful

recommendation. They will be the best mentors giving you valuable advices on your

own CV as well as further career planning!

    Get started now!

Just set aside a proper time for it, grasp a cup of tea or coffee, stay focused and draft

    your own professional CV!

For your further research, here are more useful sources

of information recommended by Slaveya Hmlinen

(MSc, MBA), our schools Senior Lecturer in English.

First of all, Europass CV website is recommended

for students hoping to work and study in Europe. It

is a resourceful site with great tips and CV samples

tailored for jobseekers, especially at an entry level.

You may find the link to this site at: http://europass.

cedefop.europa.eu/en/home. In addition to make a

good CV, you should also care about your cover letter.

You should definitely take your time

    going to https://collegegrad.com/

for great advices and samples of co-

ver letter. Then if you already take

all these essential steps, its time to

prepare for a test and an interview

depending on the specific job. If you

have to undertake an online inter-

view, here is a good site with a lot of

    tips for your successful interviews:

    http://www.engvid.com/how-to-do-

    a-job-interview-on-skype.

Last but not least, Slaveya Hmlinen

recommends that CVs have to be pro-

    fessionally executed but personalized.

They have to somehow outshine the

others but still look objective and to

    the point!

We wish us all good lucks in landing our

very first step in the future career!

    PROFILE:FRACCARO EDOARDO

Your name and where you come from?

Im Edoardo and I come from north east of Italy near Venice.

And from which University? What are you studying?

My home country university is ISIA where I actually study

    product design.

Why did you choose to come to Finland?

An Italian exchange student who was in Finland last year

influenced my choice. I asked him the same and he started

talking about girls and mixed sauna, hahaha. Although

the main factor that influenced my decision was the Game

Design department, the Meduusa studio and of course the

    little tiny workshops.

What are the biggest differences between Finland and Italy?

I should say people here are language skilled and pea-

ceful. I would say two Italians are much noisier than one

hundred Finns all together (no alcohol involved).

Why you decided to stay here for one semester more?

I chose to extend my period due to my training/interns-

hip! To get new experiences and to meet new internati-

    onal people.

What are the differences between your Home University

    and Kyamk?

Our studies in Italy are based on theoretical approaches,

too many researches during the concept process. We have

a really poor workshop so students have to replace it in

    their own way.

Tell something about good experiences here in Finland,

or about some moments you cant forget?

Lapland for sure! We were an enthusiastic mixed group

of different nationalities ready for extreme experience; we

missed the northern lights so Ill definitely plan another trip.

In the other hand we had some nice snowboarding up there.

One word describes this movie perfectly-adorable.

As any other family movie, it is filled with secret little messages about family, love, home.

We follow the adventures of a bear out of place, Paddington, trying to find his home in London,

having come there from deep Peru after his home got destroyed.

A little bit of tears, a little bit of laughter, it is a perfect revival of the dear old Paddington. Lovely

and filled with some nice messages and guidelines for the kids, full of inspirational things and

creativity. Most of all, this movie teaches that it is okay to be different and strange.

I really enjoyed watching it and the hour and a half passed by in a second. The animation is

great and the transition between real life and cartoon is spectacular. The goofs are giddy,

the characters rememberable and it makes you want to live in that wonderful, crazy and cre-

ative home along with the bear and his new family.

If youre into family films and you can be a kid with no effort, do see the movie. Cause how

can a fluffy bear who speaks and wears a raincoat not be darn adroable?
