All on the same page... When leaving Junior High a booklet of guidance was given to all entering the high school.A course of study, suggested classes, clubs or organizations to join were all included and you keptthis book of one’s grades for the four years as sort of a diary of your progress. Also the first page wasthe Alma Mater which everyone had to know as part of the days spent at UEHS. Even today schoolslike Notre Dame and Texas A&M sing their alma mater at the end of each home game.

What a wonderful idea to build a bond of one’s years at a school. The Student body joins in and itis a salute to the force of the school. I served also on the UE School Board and brought this to theattention of the Athletic Department and suggested they put it in any program that showcased anysport or activity. This version in this 1940ish guidance booklet is the old version but let’s hear youall sing it like you did in days gone by. ...continiued on next page.

It is Sunday morning and I am having breakfast on ourscreened-in porch, which faces west. It is hot and humidbut I don't care. The fan overhead is spinning at mediumspeed sending a gentle breeze over me. I sit back in my chair, close my eye and listen to the music around me.There are a couple of squirrels chattering away in the multiple

trees, a gentle swishing of the leaves. A few birds are singingback and forth to one another, probably trying to pick a mate.On the deck we have two "bird shaped" nesting houses currentlybeing occupied by a couple of wrens. Sometimes it sounds asif they are squabbling over where the furniture is to go. Theyoccasionally flit in and out always carrying a twig or two...babies coming soon. The soft breeze once again floats over my face feeling like

a wisp of my hair or a puppy dog's whisker tickling my cheek. The calmness is disturbed by a power lawnmower and distantpounding of the bass from our neighbor's music surroundingtheir pool. Up above in the blue blue sky, I can hear carsgoing up and down the street, and the jet airplanes fromOceana Naval Base. As my eyes genty flutter me to my nap, "Ahhh. All's well

with my world.

My Nona celebration at Day Hollow Inn. That's me withhand on my chin and the Bertoni clan. The last family

picture with our Nona on her last birthday.

I was saddened to see the passing of Bob “RIP”Rodgers this past week. Now while we were notclassmates I got to know Bob when I had his sonJim on the St. Anthony basketball team. My bestfriend Jim Fiori and I coached in the 70’s.

Rip loved coming to games and you could see hislove of the game in his face. And I did not evenknow he was s standout player for the UnionEndicott Championship squad in 46-47. ( some-where in that timeframe.

A wonderful man for sure and he later becamebrother in law to Joe Caldwell and the rest is history.Bob, over my 11 1/2 years, stopped by my office

several times. Maybe to pay his water bill butalways with a smile and we would talk about thosedays watching/coaching his son Jimmy who was astandout point guard and played, I am sure, as Ripdid and won two championships in the CYO leaguewhile he played.

Like so many things and people from days goneby, a wonderful memory, wonderful people andfriendships to hold in ones heart forever. God blessyou RIP, it was a blast!!

Day Hollow Inn was one of the first restaurants I went to with family to celebrate my Grandmother’s birthday. I believe the Zayac family were theowners. It now is a Weiss Grocery chain in West Corners with the road recon-figuration coming off the now closed bridge from Carl Street.

My Grandmother was all dressed up in a beautiful dress which I still remem-ber. She was a hard working woman and was so proud to be treated by her family. A beautiful corsage and a wonderful evening of a celebration was enjoyedby her.

She passed a month afterwards. She always had a smile on her face after thebirthday celebration. Some fond memories never leave for sure.

THE P R I D E O F E ND I COTTGONE TODAY.. .NOW MEMORIES of the PAST

Editor's Note: This was Endicott's backbone for us ALL.We remember family and friends working there. No longer are the appreciative Wahington Avenue merchants and those in the Village that made their

living for decades from the EJ employees. Here are some photos of factory buildings

that were so familiar to us...standing no longer.

In the end they all had to come down,

EJ was a thing of the past, the largest employer ourvalley had ever seen was dead.

The vast factories that loomed over our village were now empty and silent.

My good friend and classmate Jerry Baird cut this article out of the paper and sent it to me.

On June 10th, I had this heart procedure done and thenext day they sent me home. Amazing what they can do now!

If anyone would like to call me with any questions on maybe future heart procedures, please do so at 704-795-9667. I would welcome any calls from anyone.

THE MEANING OF LIFE“Life goes by so fast,” we often hear.

Indeed, it seems that life is always eludingus. When children graduate from school, they are convinced that life is still wayahead of them. "We first have to graduatehigh-school, go to college, get a degreeand a well-paying job for life to reallybegin," they think to themselves.

But when those goals are finallyachieved, many believe that life has stillnot really begun. And they impatientlywait to reach the years after their retire-ment to begin to explore and enjoy all thatthey have always wanted.

"We devote so much time to the"before" and "after" [stages of life] thatwe no longer have time to experience thething itself. When we are in the "before"stage, we think about what will be; in the"after" stage, we think about how thingswere. Either way, there is nothing to makeus hold on to the present… But the focalpoint of our thinking is not life for thesake of the morrow but rather life today. What matters now is what is now."

Every human being has some-thing that he/she holds dear to the heart! But clouds impede the sight of man. Theydon't allow us to see beyond the presenttense. If we wish to live life fully, we mustlearn to live within a cloud that blocks theillusions of the future, and fully cherisheseach minute of our lives. This does notmean that preparing for the phases of lifeis unnecessary or unimportant. But weought to cherish every second that that wehave, and infuse our every moment, everyencounter, and every opportunity, withjoy and meaning.

"If we wait until we find themeaning of life, will there be enough lifeleft to live meaningfully?"
