    The Legend ofKa Punahou

    Once, there was an old

    Hawaiian couple who was

    very poor. Every day, the

    wife went down to the

spring far far away to get

    water, while the husband

    gardened for food all day

    long. Sometimes, he had

    to use water on days

    without rain, making the

    couple go without water.

    One day, when the

wife was carrying herwater back home, she

    wished there was a spring

    closer to her home. That

night, the wife dreamt of a

    goddess telling her that

    there is water under the

    big lauhala tree near her

    house. She told her dream

    to the husband, who told

    her it was nonsense. Later

    that night, the husband

    had the same dream. The

    same goddess from his

    wifes dream told him that

    he must uproot the hala

    tree or the couple would

    keep struggling from the

    long walks and water

shortage. He thought itwas impossible to uproot

such a big tree, but he was

    told to sacrifice some red

fish so he did. Later, he

    and a few friends pulled

and pulled at the tree. It

    started to move. Then, his

    wife came to help and

lucky to be going to a school that actually has it's own interactive symbol that

    is full of life.

The Lily pond is so important to our school that we talk about it in chapel.

During some of our history classes we learn about the Lily Pond and the

    numerous legends.

Next time you look at the Lily Pond try to feel its history and importance

that radiates from the water. So, next time you visit the Lily Pond, just think

how much it affects our school. If you don't think you learned enough about

the pond, try spend more time there. Maybe you'll amaze yourself with your

own discoveries. The Lily Pond holds many memories for generations of Punahous

students. It will continue to be the heart of the school for many many more

    years to come.

    Traffic TroublesBy Zoe Payne

Im one of those people whosalways rushing into the door just aminute or two before advisory, orruns onto the team space justbarely before a teacher startstalking. Its not because I leave myhouse at 7:45, or 7:30, or 7:15. Itry to leave my house at 7:00 onan average school day (or maybeIll be running late and leave at7:05-7:10) and then Ill show up at

the drop-off at around 7:45-7:55.Even if I got up earlier, it wouldnthelp. My younger brother alreadyhas enough trouble waking up 25minutes later than I do. I dont livevery far away, either. The distancefrom my house to Manoa is a bitover 10 miles. On the weekends, the drive in takes 20 minutes. Sowhy does it take so much longeron weekdays? Its the killer trafficthat goes all the way in to town

every morning.###Honolulu is the second worstcity in the United States for traffic, and the third most congested inNorth America. Apparently, drivers take 60 hours out of theiryear to drive in traffic. The Courierasked some middle schoolersabout their traffic situations.

Tiare Tuimavave 19 leaves herhouse in Aiea at 4:30 AM to beattraffic and then goes to her

grandmothers house.Sydney Lum 18 from Kailua

also leaves for school early, and ittakes Samantha Kuriyama 18about 45 minutes to get to schoolfrom Mililani. GeethanjaliAnnamalai 18 spends one hour totravel from Kailua to Punahou. Why on earth is our traffic thisbad?###One of the possible reasons thatHawaiis traffic is so terrible is theroadwork that always seems to begoing on. Constantly, we see thoseorange-and-black signs thatdeclare the hours that constructionwill clog up our roads. Anotherpossibility is the fact that you cantescape down back roads. Go lookat a road map of Oahu and youllnotice that most smaller roads looklike snarls that dont connect toany other twists of light gray lines.

In most other cities, experienceddrivers will know how to sneakaround slow-moving freeways byusing smaller residential roads. Here, main roads are the only wayto get further than your ownneighborhood. Also, badinfrastructure plays a part. Even I,a 13-year-old girl, can see theglaring issues. Off-ramps rightafter merges cause terrible jams as

people attempt to get off the roadas other drivers attempt to get on.Weve got way too few lane miles

for the number of cars in our state, and the state of many roads issimply awful.###However, traffic seems to havebeen better than usual lately. Imnot sure why this is, and if it mightbe just in one area, but Imenjoying it while it lasts. Hopefully, the rail will alleviate some traffic, and well make better plans thenext time new roads are beingbuilt. Theres also the idea ofstaggering the times jobs andschools start and end (e.g. publicschools start at 8:30, privateschools start at 9:00, etc.). The citycould encourage carpooling moreeffectively as well. Theres notenough space to explore solutionsin this article, but they do exist andare worth thinking about--at leastwhile sitting in traffic.

Rock the Books Concert: Kickoff For theBook Drive and to Promote Literacy

    By Edlin Davis

One out of six people in Hawaii are functionallyilliterate, meaning that they cannot manage daily livingand employment tasks that require having reading skills

beyond the basics.Mrs. Roster, a BLC librarian, thought of having a

Rock Concert to kick off the book drive and to

promote literacy. The Rock Concerts goal was toencourage children to bring in books for Hawaii

Literacy and the Shriners Hospital. The books collected

(after the book drive) would be for both children andadults in Hawaii who cant read. Naia Young-Kingsbury 18 and Kalliyan Davis 18

performed three songs in the BLC library -- Imagine byJohn Lennon, You Got A Friend by Carole King, andHighway to Heavenby Led Zeppelin on March 6.

Naia played drums while Kalliyan played theguitar. Students from grades of 5-8 were invited to thisevent.

The turnout for the Rock Concert was outstanding,

with a show of one hundred people, according toMrs. Ramler-Reppun, a BLC librarian. Although theconcert lasted only twenty minutes (12:00 - 12:20 pm),

it was still a spectacular show by both of the 8thgraders. Along with the Rock Concert, there is also a book

libyrinth on the 2nd floor of the library where

students and teachers can bring in book donations. On

the day of the Rock Concert, Carl Bell (19) added tothe collection of books in the spiral libyrinth. The goa

for the BLC librarians is to have the libyrinth wall, an

not to have it flat, like a magazine. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat,

rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after

world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or

excite you. Books help us understand who we are and

how we are to behave. They show us what community

and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die

History of the Easter BunnyBy Brandon Char

I like Easter because I get toeat chocolate and spend time withmy family, exclaims Zoe Payne19.

Easter is a holiday that iscelebrated everywhere in the UnitedStates. But did you know that Easterwas not celebrated in the United

States until the 1700s?Easter was celebrated in

Germany and when the Germanimmigrants came to the UnitedStates, they brought the holidayalong with them. But what didbunnies have to do with thisholiday?

The bunny is supposed to be anancient symbol of fertility and newlife. The Easter Bunny went aroundto all of the homes of good children

and left chocolate eggs and candiesfor them. The children would leave anest out so the Easter Bunny canleave treats for them. They wouldalso sometimes leave carrots out ifthe Easter Bunny got hungry fromhopping everywhere.

In a legend, the goddess Ostaraentertains children by turning a birdinto a rabbit. The rabbit then layseggs and gives them away as giftsto the children.

In another legend, Eostre, theGod of Life and Fertility, cast thehare into the heavens and createdthe constellation, Lepus the Hare.Eostre gave the hare the ability tolay eggs once a year because eggsare also a sign of fertility.

Easter is a great occasion that iscelebrated all over the world.

Knowing about what the EasterBunny has to do with Easter is likeknowing what Santa Claus has todo with Christmas, or what Cupidhas to do with Valentines Day.

So have fun, and maybe you canshare some facts about the Easter

Bunny this Easter with your family.

Who Was the Best Presidentof All Time?By Darren Zhou

If you were to ask me who Iconsider the best president of alltime, my choice would be George

Washington. He was popular, inspirational and made gooddecisions.

George Washington was bornon February 22, 1732, in

    Westmoreland County, Virginia. #

At the beginning of theRevolution, Washington wasunanimously named as Commander-in- Chief of the Continental Army. #Despite the fact that he was a

member of the Federalist Party hewas immensely popular and was theobvious choice for both Feds and

Anti-Feds for the presidency in 1789.#To show how popular he was he gotall 69 electorate votes. ##

In 1792, Washington was ableto rise above the politics of that dayand carry all 132 electorate votesfrom 15 states to win a second term.

Some things that set him apartfrom the other presidents were his

exceptional skills in makingdecisions. #One example is that herelied on his cabinet for advice.Unfortunately the presidents oftoday have to contend with partisanpolitics.

When dealing with foreignpowers, he was a proponent ofneutrality. #He restated this in hisfarewell address of 1796, where he

    warned against foreignentanglements. #

He signedJay's Treaty whichgave the British the right to search

and seize American ships thattraveled to enemy ports. In returnthe British withdrew from the

Northwest Territory. #This helpedforestall further conflict with GreatBritain until 1812. #

    In 1795, Pinckney's Treaty

helped America's relations withSpain by creating a boundarybetween the U.S and SpanishFlorida. #Furthermore the U.S wasallowed to travel the length of the

Mississippi for the purpose of trade. What made him inspirational

was that throughout the 19th centurynearly all political figures sought toalign themselves with his memory. #Candidates would often invoke his

name to justify their actions.Washington negotiatedJay's

Treaty which enabled a weak anddivided America at that time tosurvive and forestall conflict with astill present and powerful British

Empire. #Instead he insisted on a neutral

course until the U.S could growstronger. #He remained firm whenthe first opposition to thegovernment broke out in the form of

Whiskey Rebellion. ##George Washington support for

neutrality was echoed by followingpresidents as they respected his wishto remain neutral in face of conflict. #

His popularity was almost neverechoed by the others with the sheeramount of votes he received. #

In a sense he set the tone forhow future presidents would conductthemselves for generations to come.

    Observe good faith and justice

    toward all nations. Cultivate peace

    and harmony with all.-George Washington

    FencingBy Ian Saturnia

Fencing is an unusual sport tomost. Not very many people knowthat it's actually an Olympic sport. They don't televise it because it istoo fast paced that most people

can't see the score. However it has a fascinating

history that dates back to themedieval ages. #There are two

fencing clubs in Hawaii that you cango to. You also dont need manypeople to play the sport.

The history of fencing goesback to the medieval ages. Theoriginal sword, foil, was to meant tokill.

As time went on they madeepee. The rules of epeewas to firstblood, not death, (probablybecause the murder rate was sohigh) so it wasnt a life or deathfight. The most wealthiest peoplewere able to get fencing lessons inthose days not commoners.

There are two fencing clubs onOahu; Kahala Elementary andNuuanu. Both clubs teach you howto fence by giving information

about where to get your gear andwhat size you should get. TheNuuanu club is more about formand technique. The Kahala club is

more about letting you use thesword as fast as possible andgetting used to it.

My mom introduced me tofencing when I was ten. At first itwas hard to stay in form the wholefight. It took a few months of

practicing my form and fighttechniques to be ready forcompetition.

There are some people thatenjoy fencing at Punahou as well Ienjoyed fencing since it was astructured way to 'spar' withsomeone without there being muchchance of anyone being hurt. #Ithelped me to learn importantlessons about timing and distance insparring. #It was a safe way to

    understand some of the dynamics

involved in self-defense, said JasonAbdoul, IT Specialist.

    The most popular forms of

fencing are foil and epee. Fencingis more than just attacking since youmust constantly move your feet tododge attacks. You are not allowedto go past the stripor you lose apoint. Parryingis essential tofencing. Parryingcan be as simple

as hitting the other persons bladeor can be as complicated as circlingaround to hit. Form is a huge partof fencing. You must have your feetat a 90oangle with at least one-foot

in-between, your knees have to bebent.

I like fencing because it issomething new and few people doit. The reason I like it is because If Ifail I am just letting myself downand not letting down a team, expressed Neo Takazawa 21.

Fencing equipment is hard tocome by locally. There is no placeon the island currently that sells

fencing gear. However you can betgear online, www.leanpaulusa.comis a great start. When you areyou're getting gear make sure itselectric. Electric fencing is becomingmore popular for scoring purposes.

There are three types of swords

you can get saber, foil, and epee.Foil and epee as I mentioned earlierare poking weapons not slashingweapons. The only difference is thatepeethe whole body is target and

foilis only waist up not including

mask. Saberon the other hand ismore of the slashing blade buttarget is still waist up.

My favorite weapon when Iwas fencing in high school was theepee. #This is because the rules ofright-of-way were confusing to me. #It was easier to play 'first blood'with my friends and classmates, said Jason Abdoul.

Fencing Terms1.Foil, the basic sword used tostab the torso to score.

2.Epee, like Foil is used forStabbing but epee the whole

    body is target.

3.Saber, is different becauseyou slash instead of stabbing.

4.Strip, the place where youstand to fight.

5.Spar, to fight or to practice afight

6.Parrying, it is the motion ofmoving your blade to block theother blade.

Minecraftedu: A Great Way toTeach and LearnBy Callie Ruiter

When someone says Minecraft, what do you think the person is talkingabout? The game? #Upgrades? ##To some people, it is also a creativeway of teaching throughMinecraftedu. #Minecraftedu is a

combined effort from programmersand educators from several countries, including the Untied States andFinland.

Minecrafteduis Minecraftwith severalparts designedfor bettereducation. Tohelp withteaching about

cultures orhistory, teacherscan downloadfamous placessuch as theColosseum. #The lesson possibilitiesare practically unlimited.

One of the new educationalalterations in Minecraftedu is that theteacher is pretty much all powerful. They are constantly in Creative, wherethey have indefinite quantities ofblocks and can fly. The teacher can

limit what the students can do,including banning fire, T&T (which is abig load off the mind), and monsters. #The teachers can also warp students towherever they currently are.One way to improve collaborationskills with your classmates usingMinecraftedu would be to use survivalmode in multiplayer. The teachercould set goals that cant be done if astudent eliminates another student. ##Teachers are able to test the studentswith various stimuli, to see what wouldkeep the students mind on a lesson.

Most students find it easierto concentrate on a lessonin a game, rather than alesson out of a book, or alecture from the teacher. However, there are somepossible downsides tousing this program. #For

one thing, students maybecome distracted or try toshow off while playing, orbecome preoccupied inother subjects or at home. ###Kids already sometimes try

to hijack the lesson, but in Minecraft, #they are provided with even moreopportunities. #Also, what would theirhomework look like? #This is an ongoing debate. What doyou think? #Is it worth it?

    Liter of LightBy Edlin Davis

No light? No problem. A new sustainable source of light has been developed for homes without any light. Anextraordinary innovation has brought light to many houses and slums in the Philippines, abolishing their unfortunatedark days.

Liter of Light, which was a movement that was invented and began in the Philippines had an aim for those withunderprivileged households (mostly slums in the Philippines) who have no access to electricity or are unable to affordit. This was a genius invention -- simple, but very effective.

All the liter of light is is a 1.5 or 2 liter empty plastic bottle filled with filtered water and bleach, slipped into ahole of a square or rectangular piece of metal roofing. Although this liter full of only bleach and water may not seemlike a strong light source, this bottle refracts the sun during the daytime and can create the same intensity as a 55

watt light bulb. With the proper and careful installation of this creative source of light, it could last up to five years.More than 15,000 solar bottles were installed in 20 Philippine cities according to A Liter of Lightorganization. Theyhope to install more in the future.

Before this invention, some people of the Philippines had walk around with candles or even kerosene lamps toget around their dark house and alley ways.

You never know when you might trip over something because its so dark, remarked a resident who struggledwithout any light in her house before the liter of light device. Carrying candles or kerosene lamps could lead to fire. All the houses in the slums are built with extremelyflammable items: cardboard and wood, allowing houses to burn down in flames.Without this invention people in the slums of Manila could still be struggling without light in the Philippines. It isenvironmentally friendly and emits no carbon at all, unlike the lightbulbs most, or even everyone uses. The reusedplastic bottles and the other materials used in the liter of light eliminate the need for energy-intensive process which

includes transporting new bottles. Now Liter of Light is hoping to help other poor countries like Jamaica who have no source of electricity or are

unable to afford the electricity provided. To support the Liter of Light visit www.aliteroflight.org. Innovative ideas lead to inventions like these. Lets be

inspired by this story as we think about our Project Green.

To create your own liter of light:

    1. Punch a circular hole in a squareor rectangular piece of metalroofing.

    2. Slip a 1.5 or 2 liter empty plasticbottle into the metal roofing holeyou created.

    3. Apply sealant around the rim ofthe hole (will seal bottle androofing together).

    4. Fill plastic bottle with filteredwater and bleach.

    5. Cap the bottle tightly.

    6. Install the liter of light on yourroof, or anywhere where therewill be direct sunlight.

###We are always worry about what global warming will do to us. However, have we ever thought what it does toanimals? These animals are probably even more alarmed than we are. They are losing their homes and dying fromglobal warming. One of the animals greatly affected by global warming is the polar bear. As the temperature increases, sea iceplatforms melt and separate. The polar bear can only hunt on ice because thats where their prey (the seals andsometimes killer whales) live. The polar bears have to swim in frigid waters to get to the hunting grounds. They riskdeath while trying to get to their destination. The polar bears population is slowly dwindling. When you think about animals affected by climate change, you probably dont think about caribou. This animal is aVIA (Very Important Animal) according to the National Wildlife Federation. Alaskans depend on this animal for meat. They are also our beloved symbols of Christmas. Sadly, climate change results in increased forest fires for Alaskan

boreal forests. The fires create newer, younger forests which lack the lichen that older forests have. Lichen is the staplefood of the caribou and without it, entire herds may die of starvation.Another animal affected by global warming are seabirds. Global warming affects seabirds by causing foul weather

and by diminishing their food source which is plankton. Plankton prefer colder water and swim deep below thesurface to escape warm waters. Seabirds have tried to find other food sources, but risk death because some prey isindigestible. Climate change also caused sea levels to rise and some seabirds like little terns can have their nests easilyflooded.

Many of these fascinating and sometimes cute creatures face extinction.Animals are an important part of our lives and ecosystem. We depend on them to feed us and help the

environment to flourish. Without animals, the world would be a desolate place without life. Global warming is adanger not only to us, but to all living things.

    Turmoil in UkraineBy Ryan Park

Ukraine is located north of theBlack Sea and borders Russia,Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and Belarus. It bridges the EU(European Union) and Russia. It wasonce part of the Soviet Union, but

with the collapse of the Union,Ukraine won their independence in1991.

Ukraine is a presidentialrepresentative democratic republic, which means the President that holdsgreat power and has authority. Criticshave said that Ukraines politicalsystem is weak and its leaders arecorrupt.

Ukraine has a history ofcollaborating with the Russians. The

Russians even have their own BlackSea Fleet based in the port city ofSevastopol, Ukraine under a leasingagreement between the two countries.Ukraine is a very big exporter ofgrain, including corn moreover has awell functioning manufacturing sector. Ukraine has made the news a lotrecently, so you may be askingwhats happening? Ukraineseconomy has not been doing verywell the last few years and the peopleof Ukraine are getting upset. When itwas time to renew trade agreements,Viktor Yanukovych, former Presidentof Ukraine wanted to ally with Russiaagain.

Those who wanted Ukraine toally with the EU rather than Russiatook to the streets. They demandedchange and set up camp in Kiev, thecapital city in Ukraine. Most of theprotesting took place in KievsIndependence Square. Protestersmade barricades that were taken

down easily when riot police arrivedat the square, but the protestersstarted to light the barricades on fire, effectively holding the riot policeback.

Some police officers were evencaptured by the protesters. After thisdefeat President Yanukovych decidedto escape. He fled to Kharkiv, which isone of his strongholds and where heenjoys plenty of support from thelocals.

Even after he fled, he stillbelieved that he was the legitimateleader of Ukraine, but parliamentvoted in a temporary new presidentnamed Olexandr Turchynov. With thenew head of government, some partsof Ukraine were outraged. Specificallythe region of Crimea, which bordersRussia. Many residents of Crimea areethnic Russians.

    This area wanted to leave

Ukraine and become a part of Russia.Their leaders held a referendumwhere an overwhelming 96 percent ofCrimeans voted to secede to Russia.

During the madness in Ukraine,Russia saw an opportunity torecapture some of its Soviet eraterritory. First, Russia had troopsmassing at the border with Crimea. Then they entered Crimea andsurrounded all of the Ukrainian armycamps. Ukraine quickly surrenderedall of Crimea, because so many oftheir soldiers were deserting andleaving for the better paying andmuch more powerful Russian army.

All of this commotion andRussias aggression worried the Westincluding the United States. TheUnited States and the EU putsanctions on many of Russias mostpowerful leaders, trying to pressureRussia into handing back Crimea. TheEU and the US have frozen all Russianleaders assets that they hold abroad.

In response to all these sanctions,

Russia has threatened to stopsupplying oil and other naturalresources to the rest of Europe andhas placed sanctions of their own, butthey are not as effective as theWestern sanctions.

These events have lead to manyconsequences for the worldseconomy. This crisis has also affectedthe production of wheat and cornwhich consequently drives up the

price of many goods.Russias aggression has leadinvestors to really start losing trust inthe Russian market. The Russian equitymarket has plummeted 18% since thestart of this year. The stock marketshave also dropped 9 percent in 2014.

Heading forward, the UnitedStates has identified that Russiantroops are massing at the border andlooked poised to take over moreUkrainian territory.

However, Russia claims they arejust running military exercises. Ukraineis gearing up for a showdown withRussia. They have gathered volunteermilitias and have started diggingtrenches and preparing for a possiblelast stand. They are hoping to put upa better fight than they did in Crimeaif Russia decides to strike.

Crimea borders both Ukraine and Russia. Crimea also gives access a country access to the BlackSea, so it is a key location for Russia to have control over to help its army become more powerful

    3, 2, 1 Blast OffBy T.J. Johnson

It a perfect day outside, the sun is shining and a goodtime to go outside. You dontknow what to do, then yousee your model rocket thatyou just built. You grabyour model rocket and all

of #the equipment to launchyour rocket. Your momdrives you to a big openfield and your whole familycomes to watch your

rockets. You run out on thefield and setup your rocket. #Everyone is at a safedistance from the rocketand watching what is aboutto happen. You grab the

launch controller and countdown.3...2...1.Blast Off. Your rocket fliesin the air, it goes so high you can'tsee it. A trail of smoke is seen in the

sky and the parachute pops out. Therocket gracefully comes back downto earth. You setup your rocketagain and launch it because it is sofun watching your rocket fly throughthe air.

Model Rockets have manydifferent parts. The rocket consists:

nose cone, parachute, shock cord, wadding, engine mount, body tube, fins, launch lugs and of course thesolid engine. The shock cord is whatattaches the body tube to the nose

cone and it is made out of rubberband material. The parachute isconnected to the nose cone. Thelaunch lugs is what keeps the rocketaligned with the launch pad pole.

    Model rockets are have many

different stages in the flight process. When you the push the key downand the launch button down, thelaunch controller cords are hooked

up to the igniters. The launchcontroller sends the electrical chargethrough the igniters to the engine. The igniters then charges the engineto the propellent. The propellant isthe first stage of the rocket. Thepropellant is the main fuel of the

rocket. You then see the rocket in its

thrust phase and during this phaseyou will see the rocket acceleratingupward. The rocket sends out aflame on the bottom and the rocketshould go really fast.

The coasting phase is when theengine burns it delay charge.During the delay charge, the engineexerts a smoke that you can see fromthe ground. The delay charge burnsjust burns and doesnt accelerate therocket. The rocket the starts todecelerate and coast. #The coastphase is meant for the rocket to slowdown, if the rocket would sends outits parachute during the first stage, the rocket would be torn to piecesbecause it is going so fast.

When its thrust force is gonethe rocket apogees. The apogee iswhen the rocket is at it highest pointcompletely horizontal to the ground. At this time the rocket is going at it

slowest velocity. The apogee is the best time for

the to eject the recovery devicebecause it is going at its slowestspeed. The ejection charge sends ablast towards the front parts of therocket. The ejection charge is used

for the recovery device to be ejectedout of its body tube. After the theparachute is out, the rocket has a

high drag force and come slowlyback down to earth. The rocketwill then land softly on the groundand can be used for morelaunches.

One way you get into modelrocketry is buying rockets set and

    building them. Hobbietat,located on 1413 10th Ave,Honolulu is a great place to

start. They have really goodservice and they haveeverything there you needto launch a rocket,.The materials you need tobuy for launching a rocket:solid engines, wadding, launch pad, #and launchcontroller. The igniters

should come with the solidengines. The tools you would need

to build a rocket is carpenters glueor plastic cement, pencil, ruler, sandpaper, scissors, and needdifferent colored spray paint todecorate your rocket. Make sure youhave plenty glue because that is themain ingredient you need to buildyour rocket.

I recommend you to buy EstesModel Rocket. This company hasreally good quality parts to buildyour rocket and the most popular

brand. They have many differentkinds of rocket sets and have manydifferent kinds of skill levels. #I alsorecommend you to first buy the EstesAlpha rocket set. This rocket is areally basic rocket and a good firststarter set. You should start to buildSkill 1 rocket sets, and then later onyou can build Skill 2, and all theway go to Skill 5. The hardest skilllevel is Pro Series II. These rocket

can handle very powerful enginethat are made out of composite.

Building a rockets are reallyfun, especially if you build it with afamily member or a friend. I startedto build rockets when #I was about10 years old with my grandpa and Ihave been doing it as a hobby eversince. Now it is your turn to start tocountdown: 3,2,1... Blast Off.

    Book ReviewsBy Emily Bender

LegendLegend, is a 320 page book

published in November, 2011,written by Marie Lu. #It is narratedby two 15-year-olds who live in theRepublic, a post apocalyptic regionin the western United States. TheRepublic is at a constant war withthe Colonies, a country in what isnow the eastern United States.

There are many problems livingin the Republic, unless youre rich. When every child turns ten, they

take a Trial which confirms their joband schooling opportunities, and ifyou fail, you die. If that isnt badenough, yearly plagues strikedifferent sectors.

June, one of the maincharacters, was born into an elitefamily and one of the wealthiestsectors. She is the Republicsprodigy since she was the only oneto get a 1500 on her Trial, a perfectscore. On the other hand, Day, the

other main character, is born in theslums. He is the Republics most

wanted criminal and supposedlyuncatchable. His only goal is to helphis family.

Their worlds are very different, and they have no reasons for theirpaths to intertwine. However, thereis a murder and Day is the mainsuspect. June is forced to go

undercover to find Day. Will she findDay? In an unbelievable turn of

events, they bothdiscover manyshocking secrets abouttheir country.

I really recommend thisbook to anyone who

liked the Divergent orthe Hunger Gamesseries. While the bookis very similar to thoseseries, it is fasterpaced and quicker toread. Even thoughboth Divergentand theHunger Gameswerewritten before Legend,

what really sets it apart is that Icould connect with the characters

more. Unlike Tris and Katniss, Junehas it all. She still has secondthoughts on the Republic. June andDay taught me that you shoulddefend what you believe in.

Overall, Legend was anadventurous book that I couldnt putdown. It made me think about whereour country might be 100, 200, or300 years in the future. #It is muchmore than a futuristic novel since

there are many lessons that can belearned by reading this book.

    Paper Towns

Paper Towns, is a 306 pagebook published in October 2008,written by John Green. #It is narratedby Quentin Jacobsen, nicknamed Q,a 18 year old boy who is about tograduate from high school. He livesin a subdivision called Jefferson Park

in Orlando, Florida. The book starts with a flashback

from when Q was a young child. Qand Margo Roth Spiegelman find adead man in Jefferson Park. Q hashad a massive crush on Margo foras long as he can remember. Then itgoes forward in time to when theywere both in high school. Q andMargo have sadly grown apart.

Then, one night Margo climbsinto to Qs room dressed as a ninjaand asks him if he can drive heraround for the night. They go to asupermarket and buy some verypeculiar things such as catfish and

spray paint. As a reader, I had no idea how

they were going to use these things, and neither did Q. With catfish andspray paint on hand, they go on aone night adventure around town. One of the many things they do thatnight was break into Sea World.

The very next day Margodisappears. This is not alarmingbecause she has ran away before, but she always comes back. Margois still missing after three days. Shehas left a clue though. Q and some

of his friends go on a hunt to findMargo that may cost them their lastdays of high school.

I recommend this book toanyone who likes a good mysteryintertwined with hilarious jokes.Unlike other books, the charactersare so real, and I couldnt helprelating to some of them. It was anamazing book that was impossibleto stop reading. Margo made a very

interesting point that made me think:Here's what's not beautiful about it:from here, you can't see the rust orthe cracked paint or whatever, butyou can tell what the place really is.

You can see how fake it all is. It's noteven hard enough to be made out ofplastic. It's a paper town.

    Are Hydrogen Cars the

Vehicles of the Future?By Zoe Payne

    Many people think

hydrogen cars are completely eco-friendly, run on water, and have

no carbon footprint. Are theyreally? Toyota, Honda andHyundai are releasing new modelsof hydrogen cars. They are

marketed as the future of the autoindustry and the design that willsave the earth. The Toyota FCVwill be available in 2015. Will

hydrogen cars really save theenvironment? Are electric cars theway to go?

    The first thing we need

to know is where the hydrogencomes from. Hydrogen can comefrom a number of sources. The

truly zero-emission method is whenhydrogen molecules are extractedfrom H2O using electricity from

solar power, wind, or waves. However, the more efficientmethod involves natural gas.Hydrogen and carbon molecules

are separated when the naturalgas goes through a fuel processor. The leftover carbon is discarded,

producing air pollution. An evenbigger problem is hydraulicfracturing, commonly known as

    fracking. Fracking is how natural

    gas is extracted

from the earth.Fracking oftenleads to chemicals

as well as naturalgas seeping intoaquifers and

going into tapwater, making itflammable. Yes,you read that

right. In NorthDakota, therehave been incidents where people

hold a lighter up to a stream oftap water in their kitchens andbathrooms and have the water

    burst into flame.

Even with all of theseissues, are hydrogen cars stillbetter for the environment

    than regular cars? They just

might be. Electric cars, however, are another

    category entirely. Right now,

the biggest battles in the autoindustry is hydrogen

carmakers like Toyota andHonda against the electric

carmakers like Tesla andNissan. The biggest issue

with electric cars is their smallrange, like the Nissan Leafs new

84 mile range or the Chevrolet

Volts 34 mile full-electric range. The new Tesla models have agood range, like the Tesla Model

Ss 265 mile range, and electriccars still have a better carbon

footprint than gasoline ones. Theydo have one, though, since much

of the electricity comes fromburning oil. For example, HECOselectricity is __% generated

from...There are still questionsabout hydrogen cars footprint, and with fracking in the equation,

they arent quite as eco-friendly aswed like to think. There is one last

    thing to address: the infrastructure.

There is no system in place for

hydrogen. Its a lot easier to find aplace to plug in your car than a

    hydrogen fueling station. Building

these takes plenty of material andland, too.

With fracking, naturalgas, and the infrastructure, it looks

like hydrogen cars arent yet theway to go. However, they are a

step in the direction of a truly zero-emission car. Someday, hydrogen

cars will be the perfect choice.

That day isnt yet. At the moment,it looks like electric cars are the

best option for the environment. Ifwe can make the eco-friendlymodel of hydrogen become moreefficient, then hydrogen cars reallywill be the future.

What do you thinkabout hydrogen cars?I think [hydrogen cars are] a goodidea. -Scott Nakaoka 18

They seem like a good alternative [toglobal warming]. -Gabrielle Prangela 18

I think hydrogen cars sound prettycool. -Kelsey Ou 19

    SkateboardingBy Austin Bryan

Skateboarding was startedaround the 1940 by somebody.Thats right, nobody really knows

who made the first skateboardbecause so many people have triedto gain credit for it.

In the late 1970s, the membersof The Bones Brigade (RodneyMullen, Mike Mcgill, Tommy

    Guerrero, Tony Hawk, Steve

Caballero, and Lance Mountain)really helped promoteskateboarding by creating newtricks, and pushing the limits of thesport. Skateboarding was started in

California because some surferswanted something to do when therewere no waves.

Some of the first big skateboardtricks were the cabilarial, thekickflip, the mctwist, and especially

the ollie. The cabilarialis a fakie(come in backwards with your feet inthe same position as you would havethem if you were riding your boardregular) #360 degree air, an ollieislike a jump that you do by hitting the

tail of your skateboard on theground with your back foot, thensliding your front foot up to the noseand it jumps, a kickflipis basically

when you ollie and flip your boardalong the long edge, and a mctwistis an inverted 540 degree spin.

One big competition these daysis the X Games. X Games is on aworld wide basis so everybody

watches it even if they dont skate, bmx, dirt bike, etc. In the X Games, there are many different styles ofskateboarding competitions. Themain skate competitions #are Street,Vert, Park, and Big Air.

Girls can skate too! A good

example of that is Lizzie Armanto.Lizzie won gold in the first everWomens park in Barcelona, Spain.

This really helped the women in theskate scene. Lizzie was also theonly girl to compete in a mens

event (Bowl-A-Rama Bondi). Some pros these days are

Nyjah Huston (from Mr. Jacksonshometown of Davis, CA), Ryan

Sheckler, Bob Burnquist, LizzieArmanto, Tom Schaar, BuckyLasek, Curren Caples, MikeyTaylor, and Heimana Reynolds.

Some top Hawaii skateparksare; The Banzai Skatepark (under

construction), Hickum SkateHanger, kapolei Skatepark, HawaiiKai Skatepark, and ProperRideshop.

    Overall, skateboarding is a very

cool sport. It is kinda like a mixtureof surfing and snowboarding forsome fun in the summer on land.

Kawaii Kon was held in the Hawaii Convention Center from April 4-6.When attending Kawaii-Kon this year, I was surprised to see how massive thecrowd was.

There were so many people in costumes, and it was very lively. There wererows upon rows of vendors in the dealer room. there were so many hand-made crafts along with merchandise almost falling off each table. There wereworkshops, panels, Ask a character and so many other events located in

rooms on the second floor. There was a gaming room that was almost pitchblack and glowed with the robotic LED lights from each computer/gamingdevice.

Hetalia World Conference was by far the best panel there. Whenwalking in, my heart almost jumped out of my chest because the turnout ofthe people who were also attending exceeded my expectations. The audienceas well as the panel members all seemed to have a blast. There were alsosmaller, but just as exciting rooms such as the Cosplay Cafe. Shelvesstacked high with manga, and a karaoke area where people could go up andsing to anything they could into a microphone to the whole cafe. There wasalso a place to order food and drinks. The workers there all had costumes on,and worked as waiters and as promoters for a prize wheel in the back of the

shop.Located in the back of the dealer room, was voice actor signing. One of

the most popular out of the attending voice actors, was Vic Mignogna. Whohad voiced Edward Elric (from FullMetal Alchemist), Tamaki Suoh (fromOuran High school Host Club), Spirit Albarn (from Soul Eater), and manyother incredible voices from English dubbed animes.

However, the convention was very expensive. The admission cost was $40,which allows you entry to some events.

Though I wasnt able to get a signature from Vic, my friends and I agreethat we had a great time, and we would definitely attend again next year.
