Fall VAR 2008 September 19-21 by Susan Burr Hopefully by now most of you have heard about the 2008 Fall VAR co-hosted by Blue Ridge Grotto and James River Grotto. Thursday night camping is not available at the Moose Lodge prop- erty, but there are several camp- grounds and hotels nearby. The Moose Lodge property needs to be vacated by noon on Sunday. We have an awesome Web site with everything you need to know at www.varfall2008.com We are offering a great selection of led and self-led cave trips, both horizontal and vertical. Most caves are located an hour or less away. On-site cave trip sign up begins at 10:00 PM Friday night. We have led cave trips on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. See our Web site for com- plete details. For those of you who do not wish to cave there are lots of other nearby activities. We plan on having a free form cavers slide/video show, so if you have some caving slides or videos you want to show bring them. We may have this offered both Friday and Saturday night as well as having a DJ both nights. Charles Kahn will also have his “Guillotine Trough” squeeze box there. Satur- day night after dinner, we will have our door prize drawings, and then guest speaker, Phil Lucas, will present his talk on “The Results and Benefits of Digging (For Caves).” Both wine and beer will be served following the speaker. Realizing the high cost of travel these days, every effort was made to keep the registration fee as low as possible. We also offer with and without meal options. This way if you do not like the meal we have planned, you do not have to pay for it. There are many restau- rants within 5 miles of the camp- site. Both Blue Ridge Grotto and James River Grotto hope to see you all there! [The deadline for getting the preregistra- tion discount is September 2. A regis- tration form is in this issue. Ed]. Front Royal Cave Gating

Several years ago, Front Royal Grotto received a grant from the Cave Conservancy of the Vir-ginias (CCV) to gate Front Royal Caverns located in Warren County, Virginia. The primary reason for gating the cave is for

Although the heat was brutal, 26people showed up to help with thisproject. Thank you to Craig Hind-man for the gate design and techni-cal guidance and to Kevin Mulliganfor the supply of steel and the awe-some work light that attracted notonly every bug in a two-mile radiusbut the local sheriff’s department. With hard work, the gate was com-pleted by midnight Saturday. Snowshoe SewageTreatment Plant

The June 11th Pocahontas Times re-ported that the proposed regionalsewage treatment plant site locatedupstream of Sharps Cave andacross from Split Rock Spring hasbeen found unsuitable for a such aplant, as air-filled voids were dis-covered when the site was tested. The site located at the confluenceof Old Fields and Big SpringsForks "showed a potential for up-welling of subsurface water afterheavy rains." Drilling at this sitealso found underground voids, andthe area is subject to surface flood-ing. This leaves only the site locat-ed on lower Cupp Run near Snow-shoe. Because of large boulders inthe area, resistivity imaging was notas effective at this site, but bore-holes found voids under the sur-face. Still, this site is the bestchoice, as it poses the lowest riskof the three possible sites.

Thursday, March 12th will be thekickoff for the event with ourHowdy Party to be held in the earlyevening (time to be set closer tothe event). Food and beverages willbe provided.

Friday will be for status reportsfrom attending conservancies andsubmitted papers. Tentative topicsinclude emergency managementalong the lines of the White NoseSyndrome that affected the North-eastern Cave Conservancy this pastwinter; discussions on how docavers, cave conservancies, and sci-entists work together cohesively;property tax issues; and possibledeterrents to petty vandalism.

Saturday will be for a workshop onthe response to White Nose Syn-drome, coordination with state andfederal agencies when these typesof situations arise, and the processof reviewing management plans insuch crises. If White Nose Syn-drome looks to be an expanding is-sue by the time of the meeting, these issues will be critical for cavemanagement and managers.

Now for the cost and registrationinformation, the cost will be $25per attendee. This reduced rate isbeing offered because of our gen-erous sponsors.

Mark Burke ReceivedVAR Landowner

Recognition Awardby Janet Tinkham

On August 3, 2008, members ofthe Shaver's Mountain Karst Sur-vey presented Mark Burke with theVAR Landowner RecognitionAward. Mark is owner of the

Alpine Lodge, Alpine ShoresCampground, and Alpena Cave inRandolph County, West Virginiaand has always allowed unrestrictedcaver access.

He hosted the Gangsta Mappersfor the Bowden Cave resurvey atthe Alpine Lodge and Restaurantwhich he manages. He is very caverfriendly, often allowing discountrates for cavers staying at theAlpine Lodge. He shares informa-tion on local caves and provides alink to local cave/landowners.

Trout Cave GateProject–

An Updateby Dave West

Most VAR cavers are aware that agate will be installed on Trout Cave(Pendleton County, West Virginia)to reduce human impact on thecave's small, but growing, colonyof endangered Indiana bats. Thegate will be installed on September18–21 and caver help is needed.

I've received a number of ques-tions about the project. that I'll tryto answer below.

Where will the gate(s) be locat-ed and why?

The primary gate will be at themain entrance and what amounts

to a fence will be put in place at thesecond entrance. Both will beplaced as close to the drip line asreasonably possible to prevent theestablishment of campsites.

What will folks be doing eachday?

Thursday and Friday will consist ofdigging the necessary small trenchfor the sill plate, installing said sillplate, and getting a start on the var-ious columns. Friday and Saturdaywill be the days for pulling the steelup the hill and welding it all inplace. On Sunday, we will also tryto mitigate and damage to the steephillside.

How will the steel and gear getup the hill?

The initial gear will need to be car-ried up, until a winch is in place tohaul the balance of the heavy stuff. As much of a high line as can beput in place will guide the steel upthe hill. A power operated winchwill do the hauling. It will probablytake multiple "pulls" with thewinch. People will be stationed at afew places up the hill to help guidethe material being hauled up.

What skills are needed?

A few additional people with weld-ing and/or cutting skills may beuseful. The ability to assist in carry-ing a 10-foot long piece of steelthat weighs about a hundredpounds across the road will be use-ful.

What hours will folks be work-ing?

Would you believe 9-5? Not deter-mined precisely as yet.

Where will volunteers stay?

We have rented two cabins atThorn Springs Park, about 1.5miles from the cave. The cabinshave bunk beds with bare mattress-es on marginal springs and no bed-ding. Workers should bring sheetsand/or a sleeping bag.

Will food be provided and forwhat meals?

Three meals a day will be provided. If an individual has special needs, they need to let us know ahead oftime.

When are the workers reallyneeded (which days)?

Saturday and Sunday is when themost steel will be moved.

When will the work be finished?

If all goes according to plan, bySunday afternoon.

If we must all sign a waiver, canwe see it ahead of time?

The text of the waiver has not beenfinalized yet. As soon as it is it willbe posted on the Web and sent tovarious caving e-mail lists.

It would be great if the informa-tion was on a Web site so folkscan look at it for updates.

An excellent idea. We have estab-lished a page on the D.C. Grottto’sWeb site at www.caves.org/grotto/dcg/gate.

If you are planning to help withthis project, or have any questions, please e-mail me, Dave West, [email protected]. We reallyneed firm commitments from folksto help with our planning. Thanks.
