I n a w a y , i t m i g h t be s a i d t h a t t h e B a r t h e l l S e r i e s w a s lost be fore i t s t a r t e d . O f course s u c h a s t a t e ­m e n t w o u l d not r e a l l y be f a i r , for i n a n y close s e r i e s i t is not poss ib le to p o i n t to a n y one i n c i d e n t a n d s a y t h a t i t w a s the cause of the e n d r e s u l t . I n a n y e v e n t , the e l e ­m e n t of t r u t h i n the above , is the f a c t t h a t the S c h o e n d o r f s g o t over t h e l i n e too soon i n the f i r s t race -C o m i n g b a c k , t h e y w e r e , of course , l a s t . T h e y passed the D e t r o i t c r e w , b u t w e r e not ab le to c a t c h T o r o n ­to. T h i s y e a r the T r i S t a t e w e e l c e n d s t a r t e d t h e w e e l t be fore w i t h a r a c e d o w n to C h i c a g o . I t w a s a g r i m , r o u g h a f f a i r , as o u r c o m m o d o r e w i l l t e s t i f y , b u t most of the f e l l o w s got t h e r e .
