    October Meeting & Program

Our October field trip takes us to Shipley Nature Center in Huntington Beach. Mark your calendar for Monday, October 16. The cost for a docent tour is $3 which I will collect when we leave St. Andrew’s church parking lot at 9:30 am. Kathy May’s Lakeview Cafe and The Park Bench Cafe are within walking distance from Shipley. If you are interested please let me know so I can call in a reservation. We are near downtown Huntington Beach so some of you might prefer going into town. There is Duke’s on the pier and a large mall on PCH with a food court. If you have any questions, please call me (949) 498-6017 or (909)556-9510-cell or text me. Happy trails!

Need stumps removed, large trees trimmed and/or removed? Want information on bugs/beetles that use our trees for their homes? Come learn and enjoy this presentation from Rod and grandson Rick.

from Teresa Whitney Susie Vanderlip presented to the SCGC back in February 2017 about “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Monarch Butterflies”. She spoke about the controversy of tropical versus native milkweed and the OE parasite. If you have tropical milkweed (the type with the orangish-red and yellow flowers) then commit to pruning the plants to 6-inch stems and removing all leaves from November through January. This will help kill off the OE (microscopic parasite) and promote the migration of Monarchs as well as ensure a healthy Monarch population.

Time to Cut Back Tropical Milkweed!

from Teresa Whitney There are two types of Milkweed Bugs that love to hang out on the Milkweed plants: the Large Milkweed Bug (Left; Oncopeltus fasciatus) and the Small

Milkweed Bug. Both feed on the seeds of the Milkweed plants. They look almost exactly the same, except one is smaller than the other. So are they Good or are they Bad? It depends on if you will be collecting your Milkweed Seeds. If the answer is ‘yes’, then you want to remove the bugs and destroy their nymphs. Milkweed bugs are more of a nuisance than a threat to milkweed plants. They feed on the seeds by piercing the seedpod and can be found in all stages of growth on the plants in mid to late summer. Because they have no predators, it will be up to you to remove them. A quick smash will do. If you are not picky about how much or where your milkweed distributes their seeds than leave the bugs alone. The ‘babies’ or nymphs of the Milkweed Bugs look like the adults but don’t have any wings nor any reproductive organs. They also lack the black spots.

    The Milkweed Bugs are Here!

Marblehead has a garden clean up planned for September 26 at 1 pm. Las Palmas has expanded their garden into an area that was a field, and monthly programs are being planned for each grade. Concordia will be holding their monthly garden club for all students and interested parents every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 2:30. The first meeting will be October 11. At Concordia, brand new raised garden beds were built and filled with organic compost before school started (see the pictures on the right). These await the Junior Gardeners once their program gets underway. Thank you SCGC for assisting with the funding from your grant program to make all this possible! We are always happy to welcome volunteers to our Junior Gardener Committee. If you are interested please contact either one of us: Sherry Christensen,Doris Weinbaum, Junior Gardener Co-Chairs

In early September Simone Costes, Barbara McLaughlin, Sandy Cushman and Lana Doyle met at Suzi’s house to prepare materials for the first Garden Therapy activity of the new season. The volunteers put together parts for a cute little windsock designed by Barbara McLaughlin. The RIO clients will complete the craft by adding flowers and decorations. The colorful windsock can be hung in a window so it will move in the breeze. On September 20, garden club volunteers met at the RIO and, guided by Barbara McLaughlin, assisted the enthusiastic clients in making a windsock. The prep for October’s craft will be on Wednesday, October 11, at 10:30 am at Suzi’s house. Garden Therapy will meet at the RIO on Wednesday, October 18, at 12:45 pm. Hope you can make it for one or both of the above activities.

  • Beautiful England This summer, my family visited England and spent 4 days in the Cotswolds, which is just loaded with calendar and chocolate box-worthy scenes of quaint cottages, lovely gardens, and baaing sheep. We wanted to visit this beautiful church, but found it was closed as a wedding was taking place. Based on the STUNNING floral display surrounding the archway, I just knew we had to hang around outside and get a glimpse of the wedding party as they exited. I’m so glad we did. Later I got a closer look at the floral arrangements throughout the church and just could not believe how amazing they were.

The Civic Beautification members were busy in September at Park Semper Fi. Thanks to all who were there: Simone Costes, Launa Gould, Jim Proett and me. We trimmed the Lantana plants, the Cleveland Sage and had to pull out several of the Spanish Lavender shrubs because they were dying. Simone will ask Plant Depot to donate some plants for the club to replace next month. We hope to have more help for October 10 since we will have lots of work to do to prepare the Park Semper Fi garden for the Veterans Day celebration on November 4.

Civic Beautif cation from Kieu Doan

from Gail DeMarco Did you know CR&R’s Organics Curbside program has been fully operational for over a year? We can divert waste from the landfill and do our part towards the conversion of organic waste materials into clean burning fuel and organic fertilizer. CR&R accepts bread, fruit, fish, meat, vegetables, fats, oils, grease and dairy, in addition to flowers, grass, leaves, pruning, and weeds from our yards. (Palm trimmings need to go in the trash. They’re too fibrous and gum up the works) Please bring your questions to the October meeting as Tyler Douthitt from CR&R will be there with a Curbside Organics Presentation.

    Happy composting!

Greetings from the Green Team! At Park Semper Fi:

(L to R) Simone, Launa, Kieu and Jim

from UCCE Orange County Master Gardeners If you are planning on making any changes to your garden in the way of moving or adding plants, now is the best time. With the exception of tropical plants that prefer to be planted in warmer weather, October is the ideal time to plant in our area. The ground is still warm, which will encourage good root growth, but the air is cooler so the plants won’t be under too much stress. Soon the rainy season will start that will help the plants become established before the new growth cycle in the spring. Take into consideration the eventual size of any large shrubs to avoid crowding in the future and make sure they will be getting the correct amount of sun to avoid problems. Most plants that are plagued with pest and disease problems are simply planted in the wrong place or climate. Continue to clean up and cut back perennials that bloomed all summer. Remove debris under plants that can be harboring disease or insects. Adding a layer of mulch now will keep the soil warmer longer and maintain the moisture from the rainy days ahead. Continue to water until the rainy season starts, especially during Santa Ana winds when plants are under great stress.

Support our 2016 - 2017 Club Sponsorsfrom Bette Langford, Director, Orange County District An exciting and motivating Leadership Workshop was held August 21, at the Lake Forest Beach and Tennis Club, for officers and club members of Orange County District Garden Clubs. Twenty-one members from various Orange County Garden Clubs attended including six members from the San Clemente Garden Club: Bette Langford, Launa Gould, Teresa Whitney, Lana Doyle, VI McMahon and Cindy Burns. The Lake Forest Garden Club was hosting and served a delicious lunch. The Instructor was Robin Pokorski, former President of California Garden Clubs, Inc. and currently National Garden Clubs Corresponding Secretary. Robin developed this Leadership Forum from a vast array of resources. Some of the topics were Parliamentary Procedures, taking minutes, personnel issues, dealing with difficult people, handling dissension and talkers, treasurer’s reports and budgets. Robin made it fun for all of us and we discovered that Leadership is rewarding, fun and interesting.
