Every once in a while we see a
kid we know is going to be great
and that’s the case with Anthony
“Pac Man” Jones. He just com-
pleted his run with the
Studewood Cobras and let me
tell you this kid got it. Playing
both quarterback and linebacker
on defense he once asked the
coaches to let him go in at run-
ning back and went on rushed
for big yards to help his team
win a game. That’s the kind of
leadership you just don’t find
every day. Word is he plans to
attend Huffman Middle school
in the Aldine school district.
Again let me tell the coach you
had better take a look at this kid.
By the way he has a brother
Warren Robinson who wears
Jersey number 45 and this kid
can block with the best I’ve seen
on this level and he too is going
to command some attention very
soon. As you know they started
out with the Studewood Cobras
and lord knows I will be follow-
ing them!
We finally got behind the wheel
of the all-new KIA Optima
hybrid and found it to be simply
exciting. To begin with the
vehicle is powered by a 4.2 Liter
4-cylinder Hybrid engine and
mated to a 6-speed automatic
transmission and is equipped
with motor driven power steer-
ing. All this rolls to the pave-
ment on 17 inch performance
tires circulating around a
smoked alloy wheel.
This is a wonderful combination
that leads to smooth shifting and
outstanding handling. Let’s not
forget this vehicle delivers 35
miles per gallon in the city and
40 miles per gallon on the high-
way.
On the surface the new KIA
Optima Hybrid has some sharp
lines and the lower crawl with
built in air dams to help stabilize
the vehicle in heavy handling
moves. The rear has a deeper
slant than the original one and
certainly is simply a lot sportier
looking to say the least.
When it comes time to listen to
your favorite jams the KIA
Optima has an Infinity Audio
System with huge speakers right
inside the front doors bringing
back the way auto sounds use to
be. AM/FM/CD/MP3 complete
with Sirius satellite radio with
free 3-month subscription and
USB and auxiliary input jacks,
throw in a navigation system
with a backup camera to round
out the technical advantages.
Still on the interior the new
Optima has a panoramic
Sunroof, leather trimmed seats
with driver memory, plus heated
and cooled front seats and heat-
ed and cooled outboard rear
seats. Yes the steering wheel is
leather wrapped and it too is
heated and has audio and climate
controls.
Along the safety lines the
Optima has scored big from the
NHTSA with 5-star rating for
frontal crash for both driver and
front passenger. It also comes
with a 5-star rating on rollover
even the side impact crash num-
bers are 5-star rating for the rear
seat but the front seat side rating
is 3-star. All of the other stan-
dards are met by the Optima as
it relates to airbags and side cur-
tain along with seat mounted
side airbags.
Warranties are another strong
point for the new KIA Optima
Hybrid with a 10-year/100,000
mile Limited power train war-
ranty and a 5-year/60,000 mile
Limited basic warranty and a 5-
year/60,000 mile roadside assis-
tance.
This baby is all Korean with 96
per cent of its parts coming from
Korea with both the engine and
transmission being built there as
well as the final assembly point
in Korea.
Priced to move our test vehicle
came in at 32,500 for a well-
equipped model and let me say
this is a solid mid-size vehicle.
In closing allow me to add the
new KIA Optima has fog lamps
and outside mirrors with turn
signal indicators. It also comes
with Bluetooth and wireless
technology and push button start
with smart key.

ANTHONY “PAC MAN” JONES DESTINED TO BE A STAR
It’s been several years since
Korean International Auto-man-
ufacturer (KIA) started market-
ing automobiles in the United
States. We will be the first to
say they have come a very long
ways. Fact is the new KIA Rio
EX 5-door we tested the other
day has some pretty good quali-
ty and priced at just over
$18,000. To start with its pow-
ered by a 1.6 Liter gas direct
injection four-cylinder engine
and a six-speed automatic trans-
mission with active eco system,
A electric power steering
provides quality handling and
15-inch steel wheels with wheel
covers gives it a pretty good
look.
Our test vehicle came in a bright
signal Red/Beige and a good
color scheme to say the least.
But back to the economic value
of the product 30 miles per gal-
lon in the city and 40 miles per
gallon on the highway is what
people want to hear about.
Let us not forget that 90% of
this vehicle parts come from
Korea and the final assembly
point is Korea so is the engine
and transmission.
In days where buyers are look-
ing to save every cent on their
automobile purchase, the KIA
Rio easily fits most budgets.
Safety is a quality also found in
the new KIA Rio with dual front
advanced air bags and font seat
mounted side air bags and a
full-length side curtain air bags
to name a couple. Anti-locking
brakes and traction control with
electronic stability control, Hill
assist control and vehicle stabili-
ty management helps to round
out the safety features for the
Rio.
Sounds come from a standard
AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system
with Sirius satellite radio with
three-month subscription. There
is a USB port and auxiliary
input jacks. Bluetooth wireless
technology also is an available
standard.
When it comes to warranties the
KIA Rio is in the head of the
class with a 10-year/100,000
miles limited power train war-
ranty and five-year/60,000
miles, plus five-year/60,000 mile
roadside assistance please ask
your local dealer for details.
Some of the options for the new
KIA Rio EX are outside mirrors
with turn signal indicators and
they actually are heated-power
fold down mirror. The vehicle
also comes with a soft touch
dash and rear camera display to
name just a couple.
In closing we feel this product is
well put together and those who
are in the market should give it a
good look.
With the energy crunch and dol-
lar saving mentality of today’s
auto buyers, its comforting to
know the Suzuki Grand Vitara-
Ultima adventure 4WD is still
priced below $25,000. Let us
take a look at the vehicle that’s
still 88% Japanese with the final
assembly point in Iwata, Japan
and both the engine and trans-
mission are built in Japan.
Power is provided by a 2.4 Liter
DOHC four cylinder engine that
produces 166 horse power at
6000 RPM and 162 lbs-ft at
4000 RPM. Economically speak-
ing we are talking about 19
miles per gallon in the city and
23 miles per gallon on the high-
way.
This all comes with a zero main-
tenance timing chain and auto-
matic transmission and full
down four wheel drive. A four-
wheel independent suspension
smoothen the ride and Unibody
Construction makes for a solid
overall fit. Power meets the
road on P225/60R 18 tires
wrapped around smoked alloy
wheels and 4-wheel disc brakes
brings all this to a safe and swift
stop.
Safety features are headed up by
electronic stability control and
traction control system, ABS
brakes with EBD and brake
assist. Dual stage front airbags
with supplemental airbags and
side curtain airbags and rollover
sensor and tire monitoring sys-
tem helps keep riders safe
When it comes to warranties the
Suzuki Grand Vitara also has the
open road promise of 100,000
miles/seven-year transferrable
warranty and 24/7/365 roadside
assistance but this does not
include fleet vehicles.
Some of the features includes
leather wrapped steering wheel
with a driver seat height
adjustable control. There are
turn signals indicators in the side
mirrors.
The Ultimate Adventure Edition
also has water resistant two-tone
seats and heated front seats to
round out some of special touch-
es.
A voice activated navigation
system complete with touch
screen display, traffic info and
weather plus Google Search
(gas, ATM, food) and one year
Garmin Nulink access. The
sounds are provided by a
CD/AM/FM audio and MP3
with auxiliary jacks.
Let us not forget the normal lux-
ury items such as power win-
dows and door locks with key-
less entry and panic alarm.
In closing the Grand Vitara
Ultimate Adventure is just that
and when you think of this
amount of value and quality for
less than $25,000 you have to
give it a shot if you are in the
market!

Our King-Size Mover and
Shaker for the month of May is
Brandon K. Reed. Currently,
Brandon is a senior at George
Washington Carver Magnet High
School. He ranks in the top 25%
of his class and has an overall
GPA of 3.0 in the Engineering
program at Carver High School.
Brandon has also been the
Captain of the Eisenhower High
School Boy’s Varsity Golf Team
for the past four years. As a four
year letterman in Golf, he has
won the District 18 5A title for
the past two years. Additionally,
as a Medalist in Golf, he went
on to Regional play this year
and for the 2010-2011 school
year. Brandon is great golfer
and he loves the sport. During
his high school years, he over-
came many obstacles to become
the student/athlete that he is
now. He had major surgery,
while at the same time keeping
up with the rigor of the studies,
and maintaining one of the
smoothest golf swings in the
sport.
Brandon is a fierce competitor
when it comes to golf. During
this year’s district competition,
Brandon was down a few
strokes on the first day.
However, when the ball finally,
rolled into the 18th hole; it was
Brandon who won the tourna-
ment and made history at Aldine
ISD’s Eisenhower High School.
He and Mariesha Keys, who also
plays golf, became the first two
golfers in the history of
Eisenhower High School to earn
medalist honors in their respec-
tive divisions. To close out his
high school career, Brandon was
selected as a finalist for the 2012
Touchdown Club Scholar-
Athlete Award.
Brandon will attend Hampton
University in the fall and major
in Political Science. Who knows
we may even see him on the
PGA tour as a professional
golfer in the future!!!
As part of Mitsubishi Motors
revamping, the Outlander gets a
new bold look for 2012. The
front chrome grille reminds you
of the bold fronts of the Dodges
from the late 40s and it certainly
meets the eye. The rest of the
styling kind of blends in with
the modern day trend, but it
working for Mitsubishi as the
company continues to see
increase in sales.
Our test vehicle came in a mer-
cury gray with black interior and
we found it to be a pretty good
looking match.
Power comes from a 2.0 Liter
DOHC In-line four cylinder
engine and it’s mated to a con-
tinuously variable transmission
and meets the 50-state emission
standards. This produces good
scores on environmental per-
formances including a four when
it comes to smog score and a
seven on global warming score.
Economically speaking the
Outlander we tested was the
two-wheel drive version and it
still managed 25 MPG in the
city and 31 MPG on the high-
way. Those are good numbers
for a vehicle in this class with
the power the engine provided.
Also important is the Mitsubishi
10-year/100,000 miles warranty
for this power train and five-
year/60,000 miles bumper to
bumper along with five-
year/unlimited roadside assis-
tance warranty. The old saying
goes you can tell how good the
product is by the amount and the
length of the warranties that are
being offered. If the saying is
truth this product is darn good.
With a final assembly point in
Okazaki, Japan and both the
engine and transmission are built
in Japan and fact is 94% of the
parts for this vehicle come from
Japan. Rated with a four-star for
roll over but at the time of our
test it was not rated for frontal
and side crashes.
Inside the driver is greeted with
a leather wrapped steering wheel
and gear shift knob and steering
wheel controls. The rear seats
are 60/40 split fold-down.
Plenty of cargo space in the new
Outlander adds to the quality of
the vehicle that priced just fewer
than $27,000.
Along the safety lines the new
Outlander comes with perform-
ance handling four wheel disc
anti-locking brakes electronic
brakeforce distribution and four
wheel independent suspension.
Advanced dual front air bags
with front seat side mounted
bags, driver knee bags and side
curtain air bags as well as active
stability control. If you’ve heard
these features before you would
know they are commonly found
on more expensive luxury sport
sedans.
Quality sounds come from a
710-watt Max Rockford Fosgate
Punch premium sound system
with nine-speakers including a
10 inch subwoofer. This system
offers CD/MP3 in-dash head
unit that includes Sirius satellite
radio with three-month free
service from the date of the sale.
The navigational system
includes a rear camera and a
music server to name a couple.
In closing please allow me to
add the new Outlander also has
steering wheel paddle shifter and
super wide range HID head-
lamps.

When you are ready for the big
time, you think Cadillac and the
Escalade ESV AWD Platinum is
top of the line. The model we
tested the other week came with
a price tag of just over $85,000.
But let me tell you why and you
can clearly see its well worth it.
This baby would make the late
Roy Rogers trade in ‘Trigger’
for this model. Man we are
speaking of the true Cowboy
Cadillac and the Escalade has
taken the SUV luxury buyers by
storm.
Under the hood is proven 6.2
Liter V8 engine SFI with active
fuel management and flex fuel
capability. It’s mated to a power-
ful six-speed automatic trans-
mission with transfer case AWD.
Power hits the ground on All-
season 22 inch tires circulating
around chromed aluminum
wheels.
This translates into 403 horse-
power at 5700 RPM and 417 lb-
Ft of torque at 4300 RPM. As
expected this models gets 13
miles per gallon in the city and
18 on the highway.
It comes with a five-star rating
for frontal crash and that’s for
driver and front passenger, plus
a five-star rating for side crashes
both front and rear seat passen-
gers. However the rollover rat-
ing of three-star is a bit low.
Coming equipped with 60% of
its parts from the good old’ USA
and 33% coming from neighbor-
ing Mexico. Final assemble took
place right here in Arlington,
Texas. That’s where I get the
name Cowboy Cadillac.
Escalade comes with a four-
year/50,000 mile bumper to
bumper warranty and a five-
year/100,000 mile power train
warranty and a premium care
maintenance five-year/100,000
courtesy transportation as well
as roadside assistance. Throw in
a 12-month On star direction
and connections with automatic
crash response, turn by turn nav-
igation and onstar remote link.
From the outside you see those
fancy looking headlamps with a
slight bevel and the world
famous Cadillac grille with the
signature badge that dates back
to the 40s. Even the starting
price for this model is over
$64,000.
Solidly built the Escalade
Platinum ESV comes in at near-
ly 6,000 pounds so you get that
true safety weight feel.
Driver and passengers are treat-
ed to outstanding room and
comfort. It starts with a multi-
function gauge setup with wide
readable numbers and plenty of
options. The rear seat rides each
have their own entertainment
systems on the back of the front
seat making for long time allow
each to watch their favorite
DVD and listen to their favorite
music. Headphones are provided
so that one person does not
interfere with the other. The
Captain chairs with heated and
cooled features add to the com-
fort of this extraordinary vehicle.
Back to the Cowboy look the
new Escalade comes with hand-
stitched accent covering instru-
ment panels and door trim and
center console. We are talking
about a special approach to the
industry that we haven’t seen in
years. We applaud GM for tak-
ing in every little detail and
working with us to provide the
very best. Even the cup holders
are both heated and cooled.
There is a power release fold
and tumble second row seats
making it easier for you to have
more cargo space when needed.
Sounds are provided by a Bose
5.1 Cabin Surround Sound
System Audio Pilot noise com-
pensation technology and 10-
speakers equalized Escalade’s
interior. This comes with blue
tooth connectively and a power
rear lift gate.
Other features such as remote
vehicle start, universal home
remote and adjustable pedals to
name a few.
Along the safety and security
lines the Escalade has side bags,
frontal driver and front passen-
ger with seat mounted side
impact airbags for both driver
and front passengers. A head
curtain side airbags with rollover
protection is placed on all rows
of seats. A rear vision camera
system is also added as well as
side blind zone alert. Then
there’s stabilitrak stability con-
trol with traction control and
rollover mitigation.
Don’t let the smooth sailing of
the Escalade fool you; remember
this is still a truck and it tows up
to 7800 pounds safely and has
108.9 cubic feet of interior space
and the best in class behind the
front row seats and remember
you can fold them forward and
add more room.
In closing please allow me to
add the new Escalade also has
Ultrasonic Rear Park assist, now
that’s a switch for an SUV. But
there is so much more!

Hey Lovers have you ever
thought about giving a past rela-
tionship a second chance? I've
seen people who were married
and divorced get married again.
Would you be willing to give
someone you once loved and
might still love a second go
round? What are some of the
factors that would even make
the second time any better? 1.
Maturity: the person has had
time to grow up (yeah right
some people never...you know
the rest) 2. Interference: some-
times we tend to let our friends
and family get in the way 3.
Finances: which could be better
the second time, it doesn't help
to have a little in the bank
account (you know the old say-
ing, no romance without no
finance) 4. Compatibility: this
helps more than you think, just
because you hit it off in the
beginning doesn't mean that you
are compatible and can sustain
an everyday relationship 5. The
Cause: was the reason you broke
up forgivable. Almost the most
important factor number 6.
Love: do you still love them, did
you ever love them and can your
love evolve into an uncondition-
al love? A love that looks
beyond the every day imperfec-
tions and you become one
against the world. Which factor
is the one that fits your situation,
and bottom line, it should
depend on what you think is best
for you, for your children. No
one said it was going to be easy,
no one said it would be fair.
The old people say the second
time around is better, but the
third time's a charm. Me, I say
follow your heart unless it's
down a one way or a dead end
street. Make sure you are tuned
in on Wednesday nights for In
The Love Corner with Ez and a
special guest. Recently I had
Tonyay Palmer who is an actress
and Christian counselor on the
show and we discussed "Is the
church the best place to find true
love or meaningful relationship".
The audience was split so there
will be a second show coming
soon. Also Miss Palmer who
recently starred in the stage play
‘Finding First Lady’ with an
awesome cast and that made for
an awesome show. She also will
have a roll in an upcoming
movie titled ‘Because I Love’ in
theaters real soon, so keep lis-
tening for details and your
chance to win tickets to the pre-
miere.
The top five love songs for this
month are 1) Love me in a
Special Way, El DeBarge 2)
Superstar, Luther Vandross 3)
Catching Hell, Natalie Cole 4)
One in a Million, Larry
Gramham 5) Ribbon in the
Sky, Stevie Wonder.
School is almost over, so spend
some extra time with the family,
take a vacation, if you have
never taken a vacation with the
family do so and give them
something no one can take from
them; that’s time and memories.
So until next time put a little
love in your heart, the look of
love in your eyes and don't let a
day go by without telling some-
one you love them even if that
someone is you.
In these days of economic
crunch we are pleased to report
on the new 2012 Honda Civic
Hybrid with navigation system.
We are talking about a vehicle
that’s powered by a 1.5 Liter
SOHC eight valve I-VTEC in-
line four cylinder engine. This
110 horse powered motor cranks
out 44 miles per gallon no mat-
ter if it’s in the city or on the
highway. The integrated motor
assist has idle stop feature. A
continuously variable transmis-
sion provides for smooth shift-
ing and the front Macpherson
struts suspension with rear
multi-link suspension makes a
full overall smooth ride. More
on the Hybrid the new Civic is
also electric Motor assisted and
comes with rack and pinion
steering. Through all of this the
engine is still certified as
(ULEV) an ultra-low emission
vehicle.
Having a bigger shell the new
Civic is roomier that the original
one and that’s special when you
consider the value you are get-
ting. Our test vehicle came in at
$27,500 fully equipped.
Civic is powered by a Japan
built engine and a Japan built
transmission yet 65% of its parts
comes from the United States
and Canada and the finals
assembly point is Suzuka, Mie
Japan and 20% of its parts come
from Japan.
Inside the new Civic you know
you are in a Honda with big face
easy to read gauges and a
smooth instrument cluster lay-
out. The driver is treated to a tilt
and telescopic steering column
and auto-up-down window.
There are front map lights and
cargo area lights along with an
outside temperature gauge. To
prove just how thoughtful
Honda is the Civic has mainte-
nance Minder System.
On the outside the Civic is still
fashionable with P195/65R All-
season tires circulation around a
light alloy wheel and a rear deck
spoiler to name a couple.
In closing please allow me to
add the Navigation system
includes a 160-watt AM/FM/CD
audio system with six speakers
including MP3/WMA playback.
A blue tooth hands free link as
well as blue tooth audio and
MP3 auxiliary input jack.

THE DISORDER:
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD) is a mental health prob-
lem that can occur after some-
one goes through a traumatic
event like war, assault, or disas-
ter.
THE FACTS: One in three
returning troops are diagnosed
with serious PTSD symptoms.
Less than 40% will seek help!
In 2009, 245 soldiers killed
themselves. On average, five
active-duty troops attempt sui-
cide each day. Since 2006 1100
troops have taken their own
lives.
For our troops returning from
combat, two out of three mar-
riages are failing. This is more
than 27,000 in 2009 alone.
Houston, Texas is the third
largest military community in
the country (behind San Antonio
and San Diego) and the second
largest veterans’ community in
the nation. In addition Houston
is the second highest recruiting
district in the nation.
23% of Houston’s adult home-
less are veterans. (Source: PTSD
Foundation of America).
WHAT IS BEIG DOE: To
assist the victims of PTSD, the
PTSD Foundation of America, a
faith based charity based in
Houston, is building group
homes designed to provide tran-
sitional living for patients. While
living in these facilities, the vet-
erans will receive intense men-
toring and counseling. There
will also be interaction with
Alcoholics Anonymous and
Celebrate Recovery. Job training
and relationship counseling will
also be available. The Texas
Veterans’ Commission will also
come in to assist the residents as
needed.
The founder of the PTSD
Foundation of America, Gene
Birdwell, raised the funds then
purchased and donated the land
just west of the Sam Houston
Race Park. In addition to chair-
ing the Foundation, Birdwell is
president of Birdwell
Construction a Houston based
company that employs over 150
people and specializes in waste-
water and petrochemical con-
struction projects.
I recently attended the opening
of the first unit of Camp Hope
Houston. Director of Operations
and Pastor of the CrossBridge
Church in Hockley, Texas,
David Maulsby sat down and
gave me an overview of the
operation then led me on a quick
tour. Built on five acres in
Northwest Houston, this is the
first of what they hope will be
20 units. This first house will be
for individuals but the next
house will be designed to house
families. Each unit will be divid-
ed into four, two person bed-
rooms. With two bedrooms on
each end of the house every bed-
room will have its own bath-
room and two bedrooms will
share a kitchen.
These homes are beautiful. If
you were not aware of their pur-
pose you would think that they
were ordinary residential units.
The purpose of this is to provide
as normal a living environment
as possible while residents work
to overcome the problems that
led them here. The floors are
tiled and carpeted. The counter-
tops are the finest available and
all areas are fully equipped to
make the stay as normal as pos-
sible. In fact, for the grand open-
ing celebration one of the
kitchens was used for food
preparation.
Through the efforts of generous
individuals and corporate spon-
sors, the home was built without
any government assistance. In
addition, several sponsors are
staying on board to provide con-
tinuing support. For example,
Lone Star Chevrolet is initiating
a program to assist residents
with the purchase of a vehicle.
This will make returning to the
workforce much easier.

SKYLAR ROSS RASOM
LAGHAM CREEK
Austin, Texas-It’s been years
since Bert Emmanuel made
Langham creek High School
famous when he won both the
100 and 300 hurdles champion
at the state tournament. Well a
junior named Skylar Ross
Ransom, the daughter of Texas
Southern University track star
Stephanie Ross, is the state’s
100 meter hurdles state Class 5A
champion. She ran a time of
13.74 just head of the up and
coming sophomore Alaysha
Johnson of Spring Westfield
who ran a 13.84. Skylar is look-
ing at Texas A & M as a possible
choice of universities among
other schools.
We spoke with the charming and
talented junior about this meet
and life in general. “I was
injured as a freshman and did
not run the hurdles but last year
as a sophomore I placed fourth
and it gave me the strength to
get ready for this year”.
There is a great difference
between the 100 hurdles and the
300 hurdles and Skylar
explained some of the differ-
ences. “In the 100 hurdles you
have to have great speed
between the hurdles and great
technique to keep the pace
where is the 300 hurdles you
must be stronger because it’s a
longer race and yes technique
plays a bigger role”. Skylar went
on to add they are more differ-
ence than most people think they
are.
The junior went on to say win-
ning the state title is one thing
but the coaches look for
improvements on your time as
you get more into the sport. “It
doesn’t do any good to run the
best time as a junior and not bet-
ter that time as a senior”.
Getting her name out there is the
key and watching the big boards
after the race tells her things are
going well. “It’s great that you
media guys are talking with me
but to be honest with you all I
just want is to get better race
after race and make the best of
my opportunity, plus I’m kind of
shy”.
Leaning toward Texas A & M
the math and science great stu-
dent wants to go into engineer-
ing and A & M has one of the
nation’s top mechanical engi-
neering schools in the country.
“Sure I would like to leave
Texas but right now it looks like
A & M is tops on my list”. She
closed by saying she doesn’t
plan on going anywhere it
snows. “No snow for this girl”.
TERRELL CLEMET
FORT BED KEMPER
Austin, Texas-following in the
footsteps of his world famous
cousin, Terrell Clement of Fort
Bend Kempner rolled to the
state title in the boys 110 hurdles
in a time of 13.90. That beat out
Adrian Austin of Tomball who
placed second in a time of 13.99
and Randy Bermea of Harlingen
who ran a 14.00 flat for third
place. Clement came back and
won second in the 300 hurdles
just behind Randy Bermea who
got first in a time of 36.87. We
spoke with Clement and the first
question is what it like is to have
a cousin like Kerron Clement of
La Porte High school the state
record holder in several hurdling
events. “It’s great because
Kerron put the name out here
and I just have to work hard to
keep the family name going
strong and I hope to be in the
Olympics like he was some day.
In the 110 hurdles Clement
rolled to the title and he talked
about getting out the blocks. “I
was kind of nervous because it
was my first race of the day and
I was a little tired when the 300
race came around so I still man-
aged to place second in that
event. The difference in the two
races according to Clement is
the 110 is more like a sprint and
it’s over fast whereas the 300
calls for more conditioning.
As we talked further with
Clement he made it clear he
wanted to thank God and his
mom for having faith in him to
bring one title back to Fort Bend
County. “It’s an honor to have a
state title and it means a lot to
me and my family”.
The senior has yet to decide
what college he is going to
attend but he knows he wants to
major in Kinesiology.

She said the 200meters was the toughest one andher legs were a bit heavy andduring the long jump she hadbeen up and down. “When youconsider all things, I feel prettywell about my performances
today and I thank God for thisday”. When asked if she knewhow close she came to breakingthe mark set by Jones in 1984,Jennefer said “well my coachestalked about that last night butwith my four gold medals thereare too many good teams herelike De Soto and MansfieldTimberview that are going to getso many points I think I’m goingto be in the top five or so but notsecond or third.”. She actuallyfinished fourth with her 40points which is two more thanJones scored in 1984 to tieDallas Kimball for the team title.Due to the disqualification in therelays, Plano East chances towin the title went out the win-dow.

KIRK WARD II
CARVER HIGH SCHOOL
While covering the Good Gang
USA celebration at Community
of Faith Church, we had the
pleasure of talking with Kirk
Ward II. The graduating senior
from George Washington Carver
High School is headed to
Howard University where he
plans to study Prep Med and
Mechanical Engineering. His
3.8-9 G P A ranks him very high
and he credits the work of
Bishop James Dixon II for his
success. “Were it not for the
program here at Community of
Faith Church I’m certain I
would not have been standing
here talking with you today”.
Ward went on to say he feels
real good about someday
becoming an Orthopedic
Surgeon. “Yes sir, Doctors make
good pay but more importantly I
feel they make a big impact on
people lives and that’s very
important to me as well”.
As we talked more with Ward
we learned he is very proud of
the fact Barack Obama became
the first African American
President. “There are no excuses
for blacks anymore because it’s
clear if we work hard we can be
do anything through Christ who
strengthen us”. Still on the sub-
ject, Ward said Americans must
be away of the move to keep
Obama from being re-elected for
a second term. “What they are
trying to do is blame the
President for our slow economy
but we have to give former
President George W. Bush some
of the blame for that”. All
things considered, Ward feels the
President has done a pretty fair
job during his three plus years in
the White House. “Some people
are expecting a big change
overnight but it just doesn’t hap-
pen that way, as you know it
takes time to bring about real
changes.
If he had it to do over again
Kirk said he probably would
have taken the S.A.T. sooner
because he was simply misin-
formed going into the test and
says he would definitely correct
that if given an opportunity to
do so.
In his spare time Kirk likes
going to the mall, the movies
and considers himself a person
who truly looks forward to col-
lege and adulthood with a full
head of steam.
He credits his mother (LaDon
Ward and father Kirk Ward
Senior) with keeping him on the
straight and narrow path all his
life and he thanks them for that.
“You know with my Mom being
as administrator, she kept me in
check all along and my father
was always there to assist her”.
In closing Ward said he would
like to see just a little easing up
on the dress codes at Carver and
the name badges must be worn
at all times. But he is looking
forward to putting those three
Ds of Bishop Dixon program
Discipline, stay away from
Distraction and stay determined
to reach your Destination. We
know he will do well and make
a positive impact in the lives of
all of those he comes in contact
with!
TARA POWERS
WESLEY ELEMETARY
We had the pleasure of talking
with a member of the
Studewood Cobras Junior
Varsity squad while they were
being honored as a member of
the Good Gangs USA program
for 2012. The Program was
started in 1994 by the legendary
Bishop James Dixon II and has
grown into one of the Nation’s
biggest and most outstanding
programs. Our student is Taran
Powers who is a B student at
Wesley Elementary school with
Math as his 3rd grade favorite
subject. The handsome lad is
the son of Tinisha Johnson and
Traurean Powers, who are also
members of the Studewood
Cobras organization. Nearly
some 200 members of the
Studewood Cobras showed up
for the award presentation that
good place at the Community of
Faith Church on Pinemont.
In his spare time Taran likes to
watch ESPN and says someday
he would like very much to be
playing in the NFL. But he
understands how low the odds
are of that happening says he is
certainly would love to become
a police officer.
When asked about Obama
becoming the first African
American President of the
United States of America,
Powers said he was surprised to
see him win but is glad for him.
He went onto say if he could he
would vote for him to win a sec-
ond term.
The easy going 3rd graders went
on to say he feels pretty good
about the way things have gone
in his life and would not change
anything if he could do it over
again.
On the subject of Wesley
Elementary Powers said he feels
the school is run rather well and
he would not change anything at
all if he was given the opportu-
nity to serve as Principal.
On Sundays you will normally
find the Powers family down at
New Community Fellowship
Church and Taran or Jun Jun as
his friend calls him says he
enjoys the services.
One of the smaller guys on the J
V squad that won the Super
Bowl Title Taran plays corner-
back and linebacker on defense
and he also spent some time at
running back as well.
He closed by saying he truly
loves playing for the Studewood
Cobras and has another year on
the J V squad and added he feels
they can win the title again next
year!

JUE VILLERS - DE SOTO
Austin, Texas- On a perfect day
for track and field, the
University Interscholastic
League held their 2012 track and
field state championship at the
Mike A. Myers Stadium on the
campus of University of Texas-
Austin. The girls from De Soto
won their second straight cham-
pionship under Coach June
Villers. The former track star in
her high school days rallied
behind only five returning girls
from the state championship
team from 2011. But losing six
girls seems to have made June
and her staff work just that much
harder. “Our girls ran a school
record and our girls did just
what they did a year ago in the
mile relay to give us to edge
over Garland who had 46 points
and Plano East Mansfield
Timberview that had 41 points
for third place”. The excited
coach told the media following
their title win one of her assis-
tants kept the point total for her
and they needed the mile relay
to win it again this year. The
second place was good enough
for the points they needed to
take the title for the second
straight season. “We just kept
going after it until we got it
done again this year”. With all
the pressure on the team to get
back even with three new legs
on the 4 by 100 meter relay and
three new legs on the 4 by 400
meter relay and a good freshman
and sophomore worked hard to
get here and triple jumper got
here to help us out”.
With a good policy in place with
no free days, she has instilled it
in her girls that they have to
work hard each and every day in
order for this to happen. “We
always work and it’s going our
way the past two years”. June
started out coaching ten years
ago with her high school coach
and they gave her the job five
years ago. “They pay me to go
to track meets and that’s the best
thing that could have happened
in my life”. Again De Soto has
a lot of seniors graduating but
coach Villers says their junior
varsity won the district by more
than 100 points and they have
some girls who will be ready to
step up and compete.
“We’ll get to work come
September and we hope to come
here (State Track Meet) again
next year”.
MARK BRADY-DE SOTO
The De Soto boys claimed the
class 5A title and they will have
twin trophies in their case now.
Coach Mark Brady boys scored
56 points just 12 ahead of
defending state champs Galena
Park North Shore who had 44.
But Coach Brady gives all the
credit to his staff and bunch of
hard working guys. “Hey fel-
lows everybody had a role in
this thing and we just work at it
and worked at it until we got it
done”. He went onto credit De
Soto head football coach for
helping and supporting the track
and field program at De Soto. “I
gotta throw him the Props
because he is a huge part of our
program and all our coaches put
in the time”. As we talked more
with Brady we learned he had
several guys ill on the track and
they still got it done. “Our run-
ner in the 100 was vomiting and
so was our 4 by 200 relay mem-
bers but through it all they got it
together”. Mark was so excited
he went to say that’s the kind of
stuff legends are made of. “Can
you believe that a guy vomits
and his teammates said; hey man
you alright and he said yeh let’s
go and they go out and run?
“We needed all the points we
could get down the stretch
Tremayne Acy wasn’t feeling
well but he gave it his all and
we got the 4 by 100 meter
relay”. This was amazing to
coach Brady who has spent a
number of years at De Soto and
he’s happy to get the title. “We
told our guys back when school
started they would have to
stayed focus in order to get here
and win the state title”. The
weather was great for the meet
as well. “Hey I’m an old guy
and when you have to win the
100 meters against the fastest
guy in the nation like Abraham
Hall you have to put it all out,
then come back and run a relay
man that tough”. Part of De
Soto training include short rest
period to help build their
endurance. It certainly paid off
for his guys and they are state
champions.

SA MARCUS
Austin, Texas-When it comes to
high places, Allex Austin is right
at home. The 6 feet 8 inch senior
from San Marcus High School is
the son of Olympic Gold Medal
winner Charles Austin and he
lived up the family name as he
won the state Class 5A high
jumping championship. His leap
of 7 feet was just one inch over
Kaleb Moore of Cypress
Fairbanks High School to the
take the title. Austin is ready to
set sights on Baylor University
this fall. Not only is he going to
compete in track and field but
on the basketball court as well.
“I had gone for a visit to Texas
A & M and Baylor was waiting
at the gym when I got back and
they assured me I could partici-
pate in both sports that I love;
that made it an easy choice”.
As far as the state meet goes,
Austin was hoping for some
stiffer competition to get him
going. “I was looking for some
comp and Moore provided it
when he cleared 6 feet 11 inch-
es”. Normally Austin says he
loves the competition and going
to Baylor is going to allow him
to do even greater things. “The
track coach and basketball coach
came to our gym and offered me
the full scholarship to attend
Baylor University, so once I vis-
ited the campus it was clear
that’s where I was going”.
Feeling part of a growing trend
back to private schools, Allex
says Baylor has a lot going for
itself now. “It’s a great feeling
knowing this is probably one of
the best recruiting seasons for
Baylor in a long time, both in
men’s basketball and track and
field”. We couldn’t help but
mention the Lady Bears who
won the NCAA title led by for-
mer Nimitz standout Brittany
Kriner with a 40-0 mark. “Yes
sir I was actually in the academ-
ic building and Brittany walked
by and someone told me to turn
around to see her and all I could
see was those long dreadlocks,
then I thought I missed a chance
to meet her”. But I’m sure he
will get to meet the single most
talked about basketball player
since Wilt Chamberlain.
In closing Allex praised his par-
ents for getting the most out of
him in competition? “Yes sir
my father (Charles Austin) told
me he was going to put the dog
in me and my mom who was a
sprinter at Texas State helped
mold me into the person I am
today and I’m very grateful to
them both”.

SPRIG-WESTFIELD
Austin, Texas-Year after year
someone goes to Austin and
makes a name for them self.
That’s certainly the case with
sophomore Alaysha Johnson of
Spring-Westfield. The lovely
and talented star rose to the
occasion and won the girls Class
5A 300 hurdles in a time of
41.83 well ahead of Jourdan
Doffeny of SA Highlands who
placed second in a time of
42.22. The soft spoken young
lady told the media she felt good
to win the title and looks for-
ward to coming back for two
more years. She also placed
second in the Girls Class 5A 100
hurdles with a time of 13.84 just
behind Skylar Ross Ransom of
Langham Creek who ran a
13.74. Johnson’s 18 points kept
Spring-Westfield in the running
earlier on.
“It was outstanding to get sec-
ond in the 100 hurdles because I
actually had a chance to win it
like the 300 hurdles but I’m so
excited to place is an honor to
say the least”. Johnson went on
to say she feel good about get-
ting back to state again and
again. “Well I feel if I work hard
just like I did this year and stay
focused I can do this again”.
The talented sophomore added
she feels her family support is a
big key to her success and the
students at Spring Westfield are
behind her all the way.
The 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles
are basically two different races
and it requires a great deal of
attention on both events.
“Technique, technique, tech-
nique is the key. We work on our
technique Monday through
Sunday; every practice it’s drills
and technique before we do any
running”. Working on building
speed as they go through their
daily workouts Johnson says she
is looking forward to her return
to Austin.

The Memorial Day weekend has
special effects on most American
due to the fact we honor those
who served in our Armed
Forces. But for Alfred “Fats”
Thomas it has even more of a
flavor these days. Fact is with a
birthday that falls so close to the
national holiday and this time
around it is number 70. The
graduate of Booker T.
Washington High School in the
class of 1960 celebrated his
birthday at the Magnolia Room
of the Sheraton Brook Hollow.
Dr. Victor Keys and I dropped in
on the celebration. Thomas who
bleeds Blue and Gold is one of
the loyalist members of BTW
Alumni and both his daughter
attended BTW as well. Shantel
Thomas-Edwards and her hubby
Wayne Edwards were on hand as
well as their children Lynton and
Logann Edwards. They put
together an outstanding poem
for their legendary grandfather.
Thomas other daughter is
Tamaiki Thomas King and is in
the United States Army and her
hubby is Lt. Terrance King and
their children Terrence King Jr.
along with Tyler King both
made the trip from Virginia
where they are stationed. It was
great to see Alfred with a big
smile on his face and all his
classmates and family as well as
friends came to share in his
honor.
Alfred Smith and Chunta Clark-
Smith their children are Ariel
Smith, Daysha Smith, Lester and
Devon Smith former Studewood
Cobra now at BTW also. Smith
rounded out the immediate fami-
ly for Thomas as he was sur-
rounded by friends, classmates
and well-wishers.
During the roast and toast Harry
Clack told of the brethrens at
Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church
wanted to come to Thomas’s
home to pray for him while he
was stricken by diabetes. Then
Thomas asked that you all went
to the home of brother so and so
and prayed for him and he died,
then when another brother
became ill you all went to his
home and prayed for him and he
died also. According to Clack,
Thomas told them he would
pray at home and return to
church as soon as he was well
and he did. He has been there
ever since.
As it turned out it was a perfect
way to celebrate the Memorial
Day Weekend.

The Studewood Cobras were
among the winners for the 2012
Good Gang USA Inc. winners
from Community of Faith
Church and the organization
founded by Bishop James Dixon
II in 1994. The organization
honors community leaders each
year and the Cobras were select-
ed among the many the honored.
So Dr.Victor Keys and I went
over for the Services at
Community of Faith Church and
enjoyed the services very much.
We applaud Bishop Dixon for
his effort on this day and we felt
truly welcomed at the services.
The results were very positive
for the Studewood Cobras who
turned out in a force of more
than 200 men women in chil-
dren. It did us well to see the
Cobras Mascots who are all
under six years old standing
alongside the two Houston
Texans Cheerleaders who came
out for photos. The five
Mascots are Erin Prudhomme,
Lyric McCoy, Kahlis McCray,
Trakale Steen and Skyla Gallow.
This is a day they shall remem-
ber for many years to come.
Fact is the Texans Cheerleaders
also posed for Dr. Keys camera
with the Studewood Cobras who
joined in with Spring Dekaney’s
state championship football team
and their state finalist girls’ bas-
ketball teams were also honored.
The Center for Success, the
Guardian Angles were a couple
more who received honors for
their services to the community
as well.
The youth took over this day
and the young band did a won-
derful of performing much to the
delight of the sanctuary full of
people. It was good to see for-
mer Studewood cheerleader
JaCoya Nellum who is now the
caption of Lamar High school
cheerleaders. She came through
the program and attended the
well recognized Dominion
Academy. Tishia Bryant did a
super job of her version of “I
Believe I Can Fly and the choir
backed her up very well.
On the Education side Bishop
Dixon honored Superintendent
of Katy School Dr. Alton Frailey
and Superintendent of Spring
ISD Dr. Ralph Draper.
It was very comforting to see
our community church working
to give our youth encourage-
ment.

PRECIOUS is Time. Therefore while you have
time, use it to learn and do Gods Commandments
for at the end of life is pay time and your pay will
be according as your work has been. You will find
in 2 Corinthians 5:10 the following: “For we must
all appear before the judgement seat of Christ,
that everyone may recive the things done in his
body according to that he hath done, whether it
be good or evil.” You will find in John 15:14. “Ye
are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command
you.” Solomon said in Proverbs 1:5 “A wise man
will hear and will increase learning, and a man of
understanding will attain unto wise counsel.”
How shall we escape if we neglect to great
Salvation: Hebrew 2:1-3 Salvation is to be worked
out. It will not work itself out; God will not work
it out for us. o one can work it out for us. It is
the duty of man to work out his own salvation.

fervently, attend the Lord’s Day Worship, Be on

There are many in the religiousworld today proclaiming to be“Christ-ians”. The name itselfindicates ownership. There aremany proclaiming to belong toChrist, but they are thinking anddoing things their own way. There are lifestyles, things thatare put in place for worship, andnames that are given to men thatcannot be found in the apostles’doctrine. There are also TRADI-TIONS that has been put inplace by MAN for worship andOBSERVANCE, it is certainthese traditions are by manbecause, they cannot be found inthe APOSTLE’S doctrine. Wecannot have it our way justbecause it “SEEMETH RIGHT”(Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25;Isa.55:6-9).Those that belongs toChrist has been commandedwhat to observe; Matt 28:18And Jesus came and spake untothem, saying, All power is givenunto me in heaven and in earth.19 Go ye therefore, and teachall nations, baptizing them in thename of the Father, and of theSon, and of the Holy Ghost: 20Teaching them to observe allthings whatsoever I have com-manded you: and, lo, I am withyou alway, even unto the end ofthe world. Amen. Jesus has alsotold us how to believe on himand that is through his apostle’sWORD; John 17:18 As thouhast sent me into the world, evenso have I also sent them into theworld.19 And for their sakes Isanctify myself, that they alsomight be sanctified through thetruth. 20 Neither pray I forthese alone, but for them alsowhich shall believe on methrough their word; 21 Thatthey all may be one; as thou,Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us:that the world may believe thatthou hast sent me.
Then the apostles’ authorizationby Christ was verified; Acts 1:1The former treatise have I made,O Theophilus, of all that Jesusbegan both to do and teach, 2Until the day in which he wastaken up, after that he throughthe Holy Ghost had given com-mandments unto the apostleswhom he had chosen: 3 Towhom also he shewed himselfalive after his passion by manyinfallible proofs, being seen ofthem forty days, and speaking ofthe things pertaining to the king-dom of God: 4 And, beingassembled together with them, commanded them that theyshould not depart fromJerusalem, but wait for thepromise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.Acts 2:41 Then they that gladlyreceived his word were baptized:and the same day there wereadded unto them about threethousand souls. 42 And they
continued stedfastly in the apos-tles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and inprayers. 1 Cor 11:1 Be ye fol-lowers of me, even as I also amof Christ. 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember mein all things, and keep the ordi-nances, as I delivered them toyou. 3 But I would have youknow, that the head of everyman is Christ; and the head ofthe woman is the man; and thehead of Christ is God. Eph 3:1For this cause I Paul, the prison-er of Jesus Christ for youGentiles, 2 If ye have heard ofthe dispensation of the grace ofGod which is given me to you-ward: 3 How that by revelationhe made known unto me themystery; (as I wrote afore in fewwords, 4 Whereby, when yeread, ye may understand myknowledge in the mystery ofChrist) 5 Which in other ageswas not made known unto thesons of men, as it is nowrevealed unto his holy apostlesand prophets by the Spirit; 2 Pet3:1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you;in both which I stir up your pureminds by way of remembrance:2 That ye may be mindful of thewords which were spoken beforeby the holy prophets, and of thecommandment of us the apostlesof the Lord and Saviour: I Jn4:5 They are of the world:therefore speak they of theworld, and the world heareththem.6 We are of God: he thatknoweth God heareth us; he thatis not of God heareth not us.Hereby know we the spirit oftruth, and the spirit of error.Jude 1:17 But, beloved, remember ye the words whichwere spoken before of the apos-tles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18How that they told you thereshould be mockers in the lasttime, who should walk aftertheir own ungodly lusts. 19These be they who separatethemselves, (1)sensual, havingnot the Spirit….
Definition: (1)sensual 5591psuchikos-b) governed bybreath; the sensuous nature withits subjection to appetite andpassion
If we belong to Christ, “Christ-ians”(Rom.8:9-15), we must doit his way because we are notour own, we have been boughtwith a price (1Cor.6:19-20 and7:22-24). Christians must denythemselves take up the crossdaily and follow him; Luke 9:22Saying, The Son of man mustsuffer many things, and berejected of the elders and chiefpriests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. 23And he said to them all, If anyman will come after me, let himdeny himself, and take up his
cross daily, and follow me. 24For whosoever will save his lifeshall lose it: but whosoever willlose his life for my sake, thesame shall save it. 25 For whatis a man advantaged, if he gainthe whole world, and lose him-self, or be cast away? 26 Forwhosoever shall be ashamed ofme and of my words, of himshall the Son of man beashamed, when he shall come inhis own glory, and in hisFather’s, and of the holy angels. The blueprint of The One Body(Eph.4:1-6), The One Churchthat Christ is building, and is thehead of (Matt.16:13-18;Acts2:47; Col.1:9-20), is foundin The Apostles’ Doctrine, whichis in New Testament Scriptures. Now let us read in The Apostles’Doctrine as it defines those thatbelong to Christ. He that hathan ear let him hear, and thenstrive to do.
The Lesson: THEY THATARE CHRIST’S.
Gal 5:24 And they that areChrist’s have crucified the fleshwith the affections and lusts. 25If we live in the Spirit, let usalso walk in the Spirit. 26 Let usnot be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envyingone another.(KJV)

John 1:17 For the law wasgiven by Moses, but grace andtruth came by JesusChrist.(KJV)
John 17:17 Sanctify themthrough thy truth: thy word istruth. 18 As thou hast sent meinto the world, even so have Ialso sent them into the world. 19And for their sakes I sanctifymyself, that they also might besanctified through the truth. 20Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shallbelieve on me through theirword; 21 That they all may beone; as thou, Father, art in me,and I in thee, that they also maybe one in us: that the world maybelieve that thou hast sent me.22 And the glory which thougavest me I have given them;that they may be one, even aswe are one: 23 I in them, andthou in me, that they may bemade perfect in one; and that theworld may know that thou hastsent me, and hast loved them, asthou hast loved me.(KJV)
Acts 2:36 Therefore let all thehouse of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that sameJesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. 37 Nowwhen they heard this, they werepricked in their heart, and saidunto Peter and to the rest of theapostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Petersaid unto them, Repent, and bebaptized every one of you in thename of Jesus Christ for theremission of sins, and ye shallreceive the gift of the HolyGhost. 39 For the promise isunto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, evenas many as the Lord our Godshall call. 40 And with manyother words did he testify andexhort, saying, Save yourselvesfrom this untoward generation.41 Then they that gladlyreceived his word were baptized:and the same day there wereadded unto them about threethousand souls. 42 And theycontinued stedfastly in the apos-tles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and inprayers.(KJV)
Rom 8:5 For they that are afterthe flesh do mind the things ofthe flesh; but they that are afterthe Spirit the things of the Spirit.6 For to be carnally minded isdeath; but to be spiritually mind-ed is life and peace. 7 Becausethe carnal mind is enmityagainst God: for it is not subjectto the law of God, neither indeedcan be. 8 So then they that are in
the flesh cannot please God. 9But ye are not in the flesh, but inthe Spirit, if so be that the Spiritof God dwell in you. Now if anyman have not the Spirit ofChrist, he is none of his.(KJV)
Rom 10:1 Brethren, my heart’sdesire and prayer to God forIsrael is, that they might besaved. 2 For I bear them recordthat they have a zeal of God, butnot according to knowledge. 3For they being ignorant of God’srighteousness, and going aboutto establish their own righteous-ness, have not submitted them-selves unto the righteousness ofGod. 4 For Christ is the end ofthe law for righteousness toevery one that believeth. 5 ForMoses describeth the righteous-ness which is of the law, Thatthe man which doeth thosethings shall live by them. 6 Butthe righteousness which is offaith speaketh on this wise, Saynot in thine heart, Who shallascend into heaven? (that is, tobring Christ down fromabove:)(KJV)
1 Cor 6:19 What? know ye notthat your body is the temple ofthe Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and yeare not your own? 20 For ye arebought with a price: thereforeglorify God in your body, and inyour spirit, which areGod’s.(KJV)
1 Cor 7:22 For he that is calledin the Lord, being a servant, isthe Lord’s freeman: likewisealso he that is called, being free,is Christ’s servant. 23 Ye arebought with a price; be not yethe servants of men. 24Brethren, let every man, whereinhe is called, therein abide withGod. (KJV)
2 Cor 10:7 Do ye look onthings after the outward appear-ance? If any man trust to himselfthat he is Christ’s, let him ofhimself think this again, that, ashe is Christ’s, even so are weChrist’s. (KJV)
Gal 3:23 But before faith came,we were kept under the law, shutup unto the faith which shouldafterwards be revealed. 24Wherefore the law was ourschoolmaster to bring us untoChrist, that we might be justifiedby faith. 25 But after that faith iscome, we are no longer under aschoolmaster. 26 For ye are allthe children of God by faith inChrist Jesus. 27 For as many ofyou as have been baptized intoChrist have put on Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female:for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Eph 5:22 Wives, submit your-selves unto your own husbands,as unto the Lord. 23 For thehusband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of thechurch: and he is the saviour ofthe body. 24 Therefore as thechurch is subject unto Christ, solet the wives be to their ownhusbands in every thing. 25Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved thechurch, and gave himself for it;26 That he might sanctify andcleanse it with the washing ofwater by the word, 27 That hemight present it to himself a glo-rious church, not having spot, orwrinkle, or any such thing; butthat it should be holy and with-out blemish. 28 So ought mento love their wives as their ownbodies. He that loveth his wifeloveth himself. 29 For no manever yet hated his own flesh;but nourisheth and cherisheth it,even as the Lord the church: 30For we are members of his body,of his flesh, and of his bones. 31For this cause shall a man leavehis father and mother, and shallbe joined unto his wife, and theytwo shall be one flesh. 32 This isa great mystery: but I speak con-cerning Christ and the church.33 Nevertheless let every one ofyou in particular so love hiswife even as himself; and thewife see that she reverence herhusband.(KJV)

Rom 8:12 Therefore, brethren,we are debtors, not to the flesh,to live after the flesh. 13 For ifye live after the flesh, ye shalldie: but if ye through the Spiritdo mortify the deeds of thebody, ye shall live. 14 For asmany as are led by the Spirit ofGod, they are the sons ofGod.(KJV)

WHAT IS TRUTH? THEY THAT ARE CHRIST’S
I have only been covering highschool sports for 12 years or so,so I grant you I’m no expert.Never claimed to be one anddon’t want to be one either. I’mjust a fan as many of you are. Ienjoy the sights, sound andpageantry of youth competition.I always have and I admit it’s inmy blood. I never deny my lovefor the professional sports teamsin Boston-the Celtics, Patriots,Bruins and my heart and passionthe Red Sox. But my true love ishigh school sports. I am alwaysnotified by many fans aboutissues relating to high schoolathletics, so it was with generalinterest I looked into the ‘newAstrodome proposals’. Thedome has been vacant for 15+years since the Houston Oilersmoved to Tennessee to becomethe Titans and the Texans beganoperation in Houston in 2002.Reliant Stadium was built nextdoor to the Dome. The buildinghas deteriorated over the yearsand yet the bills are being paidby all taxpayers in HarrisCounty. No one wants it torndown but no one has come witha decent proposal for new busi-ness to keep the stadium. Forgetfor now a shopping mall, casino, amusement park and many otherbusiness plans. It won’t workand no one can propose any newtaxes that will gain any kind ofsupport from the diverse com-munities around Harris County. But one idea that made melaugh in a very angry way wasthe proposal to turn the Domeinto a business/recreation centerwith seating of 15,000 to20,000. This person stated thisplan would encourage theUniversity InterscholasticLeague to place Houston backin the rotation to host the statefootball championship games. Now I readily admit there’snothing that many of us in thelocal media along with highschool football fans would loveto see more than the state cham-pionship football games return-ing to Houston. We have thehotel space and the requiredamenities to put on a fabulousshow. The National BasketballAssociation All-Star game, theFinal Four and possible SuperBowl is returning to Houstonbecause of the great job many ofour local citizens did in the pastto support these events. I can’t
say the same regarding our statechampionship football games. They did a very poor job in myopinion. Many years we had theopportunity to request the U.I.L.to consider rotating the statechampionship basketball tourna-ment in a four city rotation ofHouston, Dallas/Ft. Worth,Austin and San Antonio yet thesupport was weak at best andlocal elected morons (aka-politi-cians) gave no support to theidea. In fact one bulletheadelected official who will remainnameless said ‘everyone wantsto come to Austin’ even thoughhe is elected to serve an innercity district in Houston. Sobelieve me no support will comefrom these lame individuals. Also 15,000 to 20,000 seatingcapacity is not any shape, fash-ion or form going to elate theU.I.L. and coaches around thestate to return to Houston Texas. This created a hearty laugh forme. I was privileged to attendfor the last two years the statetitle games in both 5A and 4A atCowboys Stadium in ArlingtonTexas. The beautifully-designedstadium that seats over 100,000Dallas Cowboy fans was a joyto behold. The support staff atthe stadium welcomed visitorswith open arms. Fans enjoyedbeing in attendance at the gamesin that building. What makesanyone with the sense of a fly(sorry for any disrespect to ourflies) that 15,000 seats will drawany attention from the U.I.L.?Last years attendance to the 4Afinal drew nearly 50,000 fans.I’m so sick and tired of themoney-scheming individualsthat look to make a fast buck onhigh school sports. To the indi-viduals that came up with this‘new dome proposal’, pleaseplace in the trash can with theother ‘good ideas’. I can nameseveral more reasons why theidea is a fraud, but I started tolaugh so hard typing this col-umn that I had to stop so I couldfinish. To our dear readers andthose who carry a passion forhigh school athletics and theathletes themselves, don’t forgetour young ladies and men playbecause they love to. We shouldsupport their efforts likewise.Stadium or not, we should sup-port them because we love to.
That’s just the way I see it!

SOME THINGS HAVE TO BE HEARDBEFORE BEING DISAPPROVED
The WayI See It
By BIG John ChandlerWell, that time of the year hasagain arrived when students willget to ignore their alarm devicesand reward themselves with theextra snooze time that they haveso craved; trading in the restric-tive regimen of academic life forthe easy-going routine of sum-mer with its trips, social gather-ings, and leisure activities. Inan effort to advance or catch-up,some will spend the early weeksin summer school; and a particu-larly ambitious group will taketo the streets in the time honoredtradition of looking for employ-ment. The “summer job”remains as much a part of thestudent educational experienceas proms or pledges, and it isvery serious business. PresidentObama’s summer program hasobtained commitments from theprivate sector and from govern-ment to create 90,000 payingsummer jobs and internships, upfrom the 70,000 announced inJanuary, according to LauraClawson, a writer on laboraffairs for the Daily Kos Blog.Clawson notes that the numberincreases considerably when oneconsiders“…unpaid internshipsand mentorships, whichClawson says, “must be strictlyoverseen so that kids aren’t justused as free labor without gain-ing skills or prospects; unpaidwork of any kind is poorenough…without being directlyexploitative).” Summer jobs area big deal for tens of thousandsof students who may use thefunds for clothing, car insur-ance, or college tuition. ErikaChristakis, a Harvard Collegeadministrator and blogger forTime’s website, says that “It wasonce common to see teenagersmowing lawns, waiting tables, digging ditches and bagginggroceries for modest wages inthe long summer months.Summer employment was asocial equalizer, allowing bothaffluent and financially strappedteenagers to gain a foothold onadulthood, learning the virtuesof hard work, respect and team-work in a relatively low-stakesatmosphere. But youth employ-ment has declined precipitouslyover the years, and young peo-ple are losing a chance to devel-op these important life skills inthe process.” In July 2010, (thelast year for which figures areavailable) fewer than half ofAmerican young people betweenthe ages of 16 and 24 wereemployed; so even an uptick of20,000 paying jobs means weare still in the midst of a tougheconomy and the competitionfor those jobs will be stiff.
Still, I think that it is importantfor young people of a certain
age to learn the value of work;even the act of looking for it canbe instructive in social interac-tion. Not all jobs will be glam-orous but they can teach a stu-dent about the nature of hierar-chal structures and how to bestto function productively withinthem. But not every job or taskis going to be a dream assign-ment no matter where you land.Christakis argues that detach-ment from unskilled summerjobs is making American kidsunfamiliar with work norms…on her own campus she findsthat kids augment their resuméswith unpaid internships, ratherthan earn a buck with a moretraditional — and unskilled —summer job.
Having mentored and managed16-24 year olds as interns andnew hires there are somethoughts I think every newworker should commit to memo-ry: Tardiness, absenteeism, andinsubordination in the work-place, unlike school, usuallycarry stiff economic penaltiesranging from termination andloss of paycheck to poor evalua-tion and reduced income; shod-dy work and low productivity, even if you are cleaning a yardor mowing grass is not the wayto gain repeat customers (earn-ings). Some of those studentswho remembered these simplerules also mastered the complex-ities and subtleties of marketingand eventually rose to executivepositions themselves. In thehighly charged atmosphere ofFortune 500 companies, studentsusually realized that they had toaccelerate to the speed of theirenvironment and adjustedaccordingly. When I became avolunteer for the PABA summerprogram, I supervised youngpeople whose introduction to thework force called for them toput in eight hour days meetingthe ever-changing demands ofpreteen and teenage childrenwhile attending to the light gen-eral cleaning duties thatteenagers have had a reputationfor avoiding since the inventionof the mop and pail. The oneswho saw the summer work as ameans to a higher end andfocused on doing their jobs welluntil the program ended werethe ones who proved to be suc-cessful in their chosen endeav-ors. Think of work as an oppor-tunity for character developmentand give it your best effort.Remind yourself of this bit ofwisdom from the advice colum-nist, Dear Prudence: You justmade the transition from schoolto work. You’re used to beingtold what will be on the test andwhen your papers are due, so the
open-ended nature of a job canbe disorienting. But let meassure you that if you thinkpicking up lunch is beneath you, there are plenty of young peoplewho bring back the tuna saladwith a smile, thrilled to be start-ing their climb up the totempole.
For those parents who worrythat their child’s college applica-tion might lack the presumednecessary pizzazz without someprestigious firm in the work his-tory section, take heed: MichaelSmerconish, columnist for thePhiladelphia Inquirer, and talkshow host, identifies himselfthrough the years leading to hisdegree, as a onetime mainte-nance man at McDonald’s, truckdriver, delivery man, dishwash-er, painter of street address num-bers on curbs, raker of leaves, and shoveler of snow. Afterreading Christical’s article hecontacted Bruce Bunnick in theadmissions office of LehighUniversity, one of his two for-mer alma maters to get an ideaof the weight that might beaffixed to impressive summerpositions. Bunnick said he looksforward to meeting students whocan describe the value of thatexperience — whether itoccurred on Wall Street or atWal-Mart — in a compellingway. “I honestly don’t think itmatters much whether or not thestudent saved the world or liter-ally rolled up his or her sleevesto perform a menial summerjob,…It’s a great thing for a stu-dent to engage in summer workwhere they can convey exactlywhat the experience meant tothem in their college application, whether the message is ‘Irubbed elbows with Wall Streettycoons’ or ‘I flipped burgers, but it gave my outlook on hardwork a deeper meaning.’
Quentin Jackson Mott in theadmission office fromSmerconish’s other alma mater,University of Pennsylvania, wasequally emphatic: “...Penn’sadmissions team “loves summerjobs and students who workpart-time during the schoolyear,” it meets fewer applicantswith such experiences, despitetheir clear benefits.
Working the grill, waiting tables, scooping ice cream, and foldingT-shirts “all require the employ-ee to show up on time, be ateam member, have a good workethic, be service-oriented, learnhow to take critical (and posi-tive) feedback from a manager, manage a paycheck and whatgoes into it — what it means towork for a wage,” Mott said.“All of these intangible skillswill serve a student well in col-lege.”
And, I might add, in life.

This year’s 18-5A District Golf
Tournament was a historic event
for Aldine Independent School
District. For the first time in the
history of Eisenhower High
School two golfers earned
medalist honors in their respec-
tive divisions. Brandon Reed
and Mariesha Keys both won
district titles in golf. Brandon
Reed, a four year letterman and
captain of the Eisenhower Boys’
Varsity Golf Team, for the past
four years has made it to the
Regional Tournament for the
past two years. This year he was
involved in a fight to the finish
with Nimitz’s Marlon Chapman.
However, when all the sand set-
tled; it was Brandon who won
the tournament. Mariesha Keys
who is also a senior and the cap-
tain of the Girls’ Varsity Golf
Team at Eisenhower on the other
hand won the girls’ division by
17 strokes and easily moved on
the Regional play. The
Eisenhower Boys’ Team finished
2nd in the district behind Nimitz
and the MacArthur Girls’ Team
won in the Girls’ Division.
Eisenhower Golf Coach Michael
Haggerty stated that “this is a
great day for Aldine ISD,
Eisenhower High School, and
Carver Magnet School. We have
been blessed to have some of the
brightest young people in the
world, attend our schools and
play golf in Aldine ISD. I am so
proud of these student/athletes
and I will truly miss them”.
