Girl Scout SpotlightChArlES City girl SCoutS AWArdEd uSdA grANt Charles City Girl Scouts 6th grade and older were awarded a USDA Grant to complete a sustaining project for the community. The purpose of the grant is to teach the girls how to be a leader in their community. There are two parts to the project that the girls will work on: Healthier eating and snacking and getting outside to exercise. The girls are working very hard on the early planning and are anxious to see what happens by June. All of them have their own assignments to help split the work up. They all know what a challenge this will be and can’t wait to complete the first year. Feel free to check out their new website frequently for updates as they progress through Challenge and Change. www.charlescitygirlscouts.weebly.com.

Story CouNty youth VoluNtEEr AWArd Congratulations to Troops 28 and 150, who received the Story County Youth Volunteer Award at the end of April! The girls used their love of cooking and their desire to help others to create a cookbook full of tasty, inexpensive recipes. 45 books have been distributed to local food pantries and passed on to their guests already. We're proud of you, Eileen, Grace, Jana, Jordan, Kate, Kegan, Kira, Lara, Lillian, Lydia and T'Ana!. Visit their website at: YouAreWhatYouEatGS.weebly.com.

KATY SEIDEL'S 90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT CAMP SACAJAWEA

Join us for dinner,

birthday cake,

and a celebration

honoring Katy

Seidel’s 90th

birthday!

WHEN: July 24, 2013 – 6 pmWHERE: Camp SacajaweaRSVP TO: Joanne Purtill, [email protected] (so that we have enough food!)

Katy is a longtime enthusiastic trainer and leader. She has helped in celebrations by portraying Juliette Gordon Low many times in the past. She loved camp so much so she would give the Camp Director money to purchase items that camp needed. The items would be unwrapped by girls in a celebratory fashion on Katy’s Birthday. This celebration is being held at Katy's request as she wishes to relive her fond birthday memories! We need your help in making her 90th birthday her most memorable birthday yet.

Donations to camp are being accepted in honor of Katy and all donations received by the Council by July 17 will be recognized at the party. You can donate online, by mail, or at your local Leadership Center.

If you have stories you would like shared about Katy, please send them to Joanne Purtill with your RSVP for the party.

Because we have so many outstanding volunteers, girls are one step closer to blossoming into their true potential. Every day, you're providing girls the environment they need to pursue the interests, causes, and leadership roles that matter most to them. They're learning from you that there are many paths they can take to make a difference in the world, whether it's being a scientist, a CEO, or a stay-at-home mom. Under your guidance, girls are standing up, standing out, and standing tall in every aspect of their lives.

Thank you for changing the world for girls - you make Girl Scouting possible! Congratulations to all award recipients!

Announcements & reminders

You already know how vital the Girl Scout Leadership Experience is for girls, and we are looking for more connections - more people and businesses to hear our message and understand how vital our programming is for girls! Financial support is necessary to reach as many girls as possible at no or low cost for programming.

During our 2012 fiscal year, 7% of our expenditures was used for financial assistance, for both girls and adults. A total of 15.5% of girls received financial assistance for membership, events, day and resident camp, and transportation to our Believe in Girls (B.I.G.) Event. For membership only, 19.6% of girls received financial assistance.

We are committed to ensuring that Girl Scouts is available to all girls regardless of their economic situation. There are many opportunities to support Girl Scouts through one time gifts, specific event support such as B.I.G. or our Science, Technology Engineering, and Math (STEM) Programs, campership scholarships, and much more. If you know of people and/or companies that would be good supporters or would be interested in hearing our message, please contact Carla Thomas ([email protected]) in the Des Moines office!

It's our third year of Summer of Service! We are asking girls and adults to be involved in serving local communities through this great opportunity! Last year, we logged over 4,000 hours and we anticipate even more hours this summer! We will be tracking all service projects completed from June 1 - September 7. See our website for details.

Service is a key component to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and summer is the perfect time to lend a hand. Unlike Take Action Projects that are built on sustainability, these service opportunities can be one-time projects that happen at your local nursing home, school yard, community garden, library reading programs, vacation bible school, and many other places. Service work can be as varied as a one-time clean-up of a neighborhood park or volunteering with the Humane Society on a regular basis for two months.

Check out the suggestions that are on our website for taking an idea and making it into a Service Project. Girl Scouts are welcome to use these suggestions or find their own opportunities for service work.

The impact on our communities are so amazing each year through Summer of Service - we can't wait to hear the stories from this summer! Make sure that your service project is counted by logging your projects and your hours on our website at girlscoutsiowa.org.
