I think that this has all got to stop, but how to do it is another question. Every night I see those poor animals that are abused and neglected and want to take them home with me. I see the ads for St. Jude’s Children Hospital and want to cry. I get the phone calls for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Cancer or Dia- betes Fund and want to write them yet another check, I get the letters pleading for money and knowing full well that these are people that I just might help, but we are on a very limited income. My wonderful Charlemagne keeps giving to var- ious charities all the time and I go to thrift stores trying to find things that will not cost a fortune. I suppose I will never be a fashionable person, HYDRANT FLUSHING The Amana Society Service Co. will be flushing hydrants in Main Amana on Wednesday, August 10th from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Colonies in Bloom: and the winners are…

Congratulations to Marie LaGrange of Amana and Bill and Kristie Yoder of Middle Amana for being named the Best Overall Display for Colo-nies in Bloom. Marie won in June and Bill and Kristie won in July. Thanks to all 18 homeown-ers that opened their yards to our visitors to make this a wonderful event.

have the car that does not break down every two weeks, or have yet another appliance hit the dust because of a lightning storm. I keep thinking of the “widow’s mite” and won-dering if it isn’t usually the people who have the least that give the most. I don’t mean just money. Writing a check is easy to do especially if you have money in the bank, but I appreciate more those people who come to your house and leave a casserole or call when they know you are hurting. I just know what the charity I should focus upon is. They all need help, but there are times when I look at the conventions we had the last few weeks and wonder how much money used for the balloons alone could have been used to feed refugees, the sick, etc. We all spend money on ourselves which prob-ably could be used for better causes, but we also need to see beauty and have pleasure too. I sure don’t have the answer and wonder what would God really, really want of us. There was a book written years ago called a PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE which says that God had everything planned for us even before we were born. We need only ask what He wants of us. I’m not so sure that’s true, we do have free will, right? I guess I might be one of those who needs God to answer me with “thunder and lightning” to help me make my next choice.
