THE MESSENGER’SVOICE
THE GOOD NEWS FROM OUR REDEEMER
A Message from the President
It's August, and into the last half thereof. But it's stillsummer, with a few more months of promising good weather. The vegetables are being harvested and shared, the nights arecomfortable for sleeping, and all is well with the world. Thatis...until you hear the news or read the paper.
As Christians, what can we do? We can't stop theviolence or change a racist's mind. What can we do? We canpray for those in harm's way. We can pray that people will seeeach other as brothers and sisters, regardless of color or beliefs. We can pray that our leaders will see the correct way to put astop to hatred and violence, both at home and abroad. Ifeveryone does that, and spends a moment to reflect on just whatwe're going through, maybe, just maybe, a light will shine in theirmind, and that light will be Christ.
You don't have to be a Christian tounderstand that living a life like Christ wouldchange this world in a heartbeat! If given achance, people would change their outlook, reconsider what they cherish, and how they
would relate to each other. Just a moment of prayer, by eachone of us, would change the world considerably. Enough fromthe soapbox.
Try to enjoy the rest of your summer, don't look at theeclipse without the proper eye protection, and pray for me, yourpresident, the new council, and our entire congregation that wemay set an example of how to truly be a “good neighbor”.God Bless.

Spotlight On.....Al Zielaskowski
Al was recently elected to serve on the church Council as the Property Trustee. Thisposition carries a lot of responsibility since Al and his committee are responsible for themaintenance and upkeep of one of our most important treasures, our Church building and theproperty around it. Al recruits committee members who understand how to keep the propertylooking and running at peak performance. Heat, A/C, sound system, lawn care, snow removal, floor cleaning, and regular cleaning are all part of Al's responsibilities. It's a big job, but we arehappy to know that we elected a man who is up to the challenge.
In his personal life, Al has been a software developer since he graduated, always workingfor local companies. He has lived in Scotia/Glenville for most of his life and has been at hiscurrent address for 22 years. Al and his lovely wife, Cindy, have been married for 37 years andhave two daughters. Kate lives in NYC and Stephanie lives in Santa Fe, NM. Al's hobbiesinclude gardening, spending time with their two dogs, long walks with Cindy and reading shortstories. Al would be happy to talk to members of the congregation on Sunday mornings duringcoffee fellowship. Thanks, Al, for your service to our congregation and to the Lord. May GodBless you and your family.
Giving Made Simple!!Do you ever wait until the last minute to write your check toORLC on Sunday mornings? Do you ever forget to bring youroffering envelope? Do you ever think about how easy it would beto have your offerings transferred automatically from your bankaccount on a weekly or monthly basis? If you answered “yes” to1+ of those questions, then you might want to consider takingadvantage of our Simply Giving program. We have included acopy of the very SIMPLE enrollment form in this edition of thenewsletter! Give it a try!!

A Message From the Pastor
Many great things have happened thissummer. We had a Bible Study onWednesday nights where anywhere from10-16 people came and wrestled throughPaul's letter to the Romans. It was a gooddiscussion as we plowed through some thickwriting and good theology! We had twoDinner and a Movie nights, also well attended. Friday Family Lunch Program was back inaction, feeding hungry people each week. Wededicated the Turquoise Table in our frontyard, and invite the community to come and sita while. We celebrated Philip Melanchthonand the Augsburg Confession, and faithfulwomen of Church history. And celebrated ourcollege students too!
There is a lot going on in September too! Sunday School resumes, as does our 9 and11 am worship schedule. Our Wednesdaymorning Bible Study will resume September20 as we with finish our look at the Book ofth
Revelation. Committees continue their work, with a renewed effort. Our Youth will befocusing on getting ready for a YouthGathering trip to Houston in 2018! Thisshould all be fun!
Life does seem to have a couple ofdifferent cycles we follow, doesn't it!?!? Wehave our calendar year, beginning January 1 . st
We have our Church Year, beginning Advent1. We have the summer, which seems tohave a mind of its own…and we haveSeptember with the school year beginning andour Church program year beginning again too. It seems like we are always starting somethingover again.
And that's the way it is with followingJesus. We are always starting over again. We begin to follow or serve, sometimes doingwell, sometimes failing. And then we beginagain. But he is always there to guide andlead us to be about his work!
Yet God never starts over again. God is. Always. Forever. Past, present, and future all
rolled into one! God must be entertained byour constant trying to do over, schedulethings, marking the years and cycles passingus by, because God just always is! There forus, encouraging us, picking us up, brushing usoff, and sending us on our way once again!
We try to do the same, we try to stay trueand faithful and bold in Jesus' name. But weget tired. We goof up. We check outsometimes, thinking a break will do us good. And it can do us good, as long as we getstarted again. Some of you have been prettyregular here at worship and events throughthe summer. Some of you I haven't seen somuch these past weeks. So I look forward tothis new cycle, this new "starting over" timethat will bring us all together again here at OurRedeemer. God is Good, All the Time! Andour body of Christ here at ORLC isn'tcomplete without you.
One more thing....
This was written before the events inCharlottesville and yet another manifestationof "hate" rearing its ugly head. I am appalledat what "free speech" has become. It is onething to speak. It is another to degrade othersbecause of their skin color, race, or religiousbeliefs and to have clubs, shields, and guns tointimidate. It is past time to speak, sisters andbrothers. It is time to call for reason, for unity, and for being the people God has called for. Call out racism for what it is. Speak out whenothers are degraded by bullies, especially ifthey are our elected leaders. We can dobetter. We must do better. And it takes all ofus to make that happen. Stay on thatsoapbox in Jesus' name!
-Pastor Dan

Take the Next Step
I know as well as anyone else in this worldhow easy it is to become a complete creature of habit. There is a natural tendency for a lotof us (myself included) to get in our own"comfort zone" and not want to budge from it.We do the same thing over and over againbecause it is safe and familiar. And this exactpattern carries over into our stewardship aswell; we tend to give as we always have givenbecause, well, we've always done it that way (a term I realize that Pastor Dan is notespecially fond of).
But Jesus never called upon His followersto stay where they were and lead lives ofcomfort. Jesus met people where they werein life, but He did not want them to stay wherethey were. The Christian life should be one ofgrowth, which should carry over into ourstewardship as well. That's why the theme forthis Fall's Stewardship Campaign is "Take theNext Step."
So what's the next step for you in yourstewardship? Now it would be easy for me tosay that the next step in our stewardshipshould be for everyone in the congregation totithe to Our Redeemer (if that were the case,I think I'd finally be able to resign as yourStewardship Trustee). Realistically, however,I appreciate the fact that a lot of people justare not in a financial position to be able totithe. That should not prevent one from takingthe next step, however. Do you give to OurRedeemer on an occasional basis? Why notsign up for Simply Giving and make sure thatyour offerings go to Our Redeemer on aregular basis? Do you currently give, say, 3%of your income to Our Redeemer? Maybeyour next step is to start giving 4%, or even5%, of your income. Do you currently haveany planned giving arrangement for OurRedeemer? If not, maybe you should includea bequest to Our Redeemer in your will, or, ifyou prefer, consider making the church thebeneficiary of a charitable trust.
I could go on, but trust that everyone getsthe idea. There are plenty of ways foreveryone in the congregation, wherever theyhappen to be in life, to take the next step withtheir stewardship. I trust that we will be ableto discuss this more during this Fall'sStewardship Campaign.

What's Next for ACES?
With September already upon us (wheredid the summer go?) we will shortly be goingback to our regular two-service schedule onSunday. And this gives rise to the question ofwhat to do between services for ACES. Thispast Spring, I led an eight-week course onIsrael and the Palestinians, and theresolutions passed by the ELCA concerning
them at our 2016 Churchwide Assembly inNew Orleans, because it was a topic that Ipersonally had a keen interest in. However,ACES is a program that exists for the benefitof the congregation as a whole rather than forjust myself or a few people.
Therefore, while I'm perfectly willing tolead ACES again, I'm really interested intopics that the congregation has an interest in. It could be a book in the Bible, or a particularBiblical theme. With our ongoing celebrationof the 500 Anniversary of the Reformation, th
perhaps people might be interested in learningmore about Martin Luther and the changesthat he made in the world that he lived in. Orit could be the exploration of issues (moral, ethical, spiritual) concerning the world we alllive in currently. For example, I recently spoketo one of my aunts, who goes to a Lutheranchurch in North Carolina, who told me that herAdult Sunday School Class had a very livelydiscussion concerning the protests andcounter-protests surrounding the plannedremoval of the statue of Robert E. Lee inCharlottesville, Virginia. When one comesright down to it, the possibilities are prettymuch endless.
So let me know your thoughts. I certainlydo not pretend to be an expert on everything, but am happy to try to get "up to speed" on atopic if there is enough interest in it.

If you are unable toserve a week that you are assigned, we askyou to try to find a replacement yourself (ie:trade weeks with someone). If you are notable to find a replacement, please call thechurch office to let us know. The earlier weknow that we have an opening, the more timewe have to fill it.
If you are thinking about volunteering in anew way, and would like to learn more aboutother jobs (any of the ones listed or Pre-Worship Coordinator, Assisting Minister,Liturgical Arts, Children's Sermon to name afew), please see me for more details. Wayneis always looking for people who love musicand are willing to express it vocally orinstrumentally. Stop by the organ after serviceand he can let you know all about how to"raise a joyful noise unto the Lord." There aresome fun ways to celebrate the 500th
Anniversary of the Reformation in the next fewmonths, so join in to celebrate our heritage.

Deserving
I recently read themessage from PresidingBishop Elizabeth Eaton in
the August Living Lutheran magazine. It wasabout us not being comfortable with God'sgrace when we think the receiver of that graceis not as deserving as we are. Sometimes wemay think people who need food from a foodpantry or a free lunch for themselves and theirfamily are getting something that they didn'twork for or earn. Bishop Eaton uses Jesus'parable of the "laborers in the vineyard"(Matthew 20:1-16) to illustrate how God'sgrace is not something we earn or deserve, itjust IS. We all need this grace and none of uscan ever be more deserving than another, it'snot for us to decide. Thankfully, we canreceive gifts from God that we don't deserveand can't earn. Thankfully, we can be themechanism by which God's gifts are given. Here are some ways to administer God'sgrace in September:• Help make sandwiches for Schenectady's
Bethesda House on Rally Day, SundaySeptember 10 . See Audrey Chouffi or justth
show up at the table near the windows inthe Fellowship Hall.
• Our Redeemer's Friday Family LunchProgram will serve its last lunch for theseason on Friday, September 1 at 11:30st
am. Please contact Janice Walz if you canhelp serve lunches.
• Our Redeemer serves a hot lunch at theSalvation Army Soup Kitchen on Friday,September 22 . They can use volunteersnd
to help bone/slice the turkeys onWednesday, September 20 and serve atth
the Soup Kitchen on Friday. If you canhelp, please contact Warren Sheldon,Betty Ann Sheldon-Hughes or Ron Pucci.
As you may know, Janice Walzcoordinated the Our Redeemer volunteers forthe SICM Summer Lunch Program again this
7 The Messenger’s Voice September 2017
year. Jan has a message about this ministrywhich I have included as part of this article:
Some you know that Dave and I crew fora friend with a hot air balloon. That means weset up the envelope (balloon) by holding openthe throat to allow the air-first cold, thenhot-into the envelope. Then we hold down thetop (crown) as we put hot air into theenvelope, so that we have some control andthe envelope does not swing and sway toomuch. Next, we all add our weight to holddown the basket until the pilot is ready to bereleased. All of these activities providesupport for the pilot who needs it to be able tofly the balloon.
We just got back from a festival wherethere are many balloons and opportunities toobserve others crewing. One windy night, wenoticed a few of the early balloons getting setup. On one, the crown rope was slack and thetop of the balloon was moving dangerously inthe wind. On another, the weight in the basketwas not sufficient to hold it in place until thepassengers were able to get in. Nothingserious happened and all finally went well, butit demonstrated a lack of good team work andthe necessary support.
Our support of the SICMsummer lunch program waslike that this year. It workedout, but we had severalpeople who had to volunteermore days to cover for others
who did not sign up. We need to think aboutour support for the program.
Each church needs three people each dayfor a week. If this has become too much forour church, let us know as we plan for nextyear. Otherwise, be sure to put your namedown on the sign-up sheets next year andhold down this valuable program. Again, many thanks for all those who supported theprogram with your time. Feeding childrenduring the summer is indeed a most Christianthing to do. ~ Jan Walz
One last thing, the Bethesda sandwichesfunds have been depleted and are in need ofsome replenishing. Also, the Social MinistryActivities account is low and is in need ofsome financial support. These funds areutilized to purchase the items needed to doactivities like tied fleece blankets, heart pillowsfor cardiac patients, LWR quilts etc. Pleaseconsider adding to these funds as part of youroffering. Thank You.

Caring For Our Own
We have been pretty busy during thesummer months. We took the Senior Citizensfrom Our Redeemer on a one day tour ofSenior Apartments from low income to luxury. The Seniors enjoyed the day andlearned about Independent living for SeniorCitizens.
We also sponsored an evening workshopcalled "Let's Talk College", hosted by ConnorChapman. Connor talked to a group of HighSchool students about what they might expectin their first year of college. At the same time, the parents met to discuss the emotional andfinancial issues that they face when a childgoes off to college. This meeting was hostedby Jenny & Gerry Chapman and Pastor Dan.
Everyone gave both workshops highmarks and Caring For Our Own was proud tosponsor both events and we hope to do themagain.

The SICM Food Pantry would love those extra calendars we receive butcannot use. They are handed out during the intake process, and someguests even come in specifically looking for calendars. Please placeyour extras in the SICM food basket in the Fellowship Hall, and we willdeliver them for you.
The SICM Pantry is also in need of empty bottles (ex. plastic 20 oz. soda bottles, or other smallbottles or containers) that can be used to make dish detergent go further.
