TIDBITS EXPLORES SOME

Through their research, discoveries and invent-ions, scientists from around the globe have made countless contributions to education, medicine, physics, chemistry and many other fields. Read on to learn more about some of the most prominent scientists from around the world.• As one of the most recognized mathematical
minds in history, Albert Einstein was born with an immense curiosity and insatiable thirst for knowledge. The Nobel Prize winner is credited with unlocking many secrets of the universe, and his name is synonymous with his famed Theory of Relativity.
• Well ahead of his time, Austrian scientist Gregor Mendel mastered the study of genetics and discovered how traits are inherited. Although it took 34 years for the science world to recognize his genius, Mendel persisted in his research despite his ideas being rejected by his peers as ludicrous.
• Sir Isaac Newton, regarded as the pioneer of modern physical science, made many scientific advances in the fields of natural science, mathematics, astronomy, mechanics and chemistry. Credited with discovering the force of gravity, he is still considered by many to be the “greatest and most influential scientist that has ever lived.”

Spanning the Golden Gate Strait on the San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge crosses over the bay where it opens into the Pacific Ocean. As part of both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1, the structure links the city of San Francisco to Marin County on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, • Between the mid-1800s and early 1900s the
primary means of crossing the San Francisco Bay was by ferry. As the population continued to grow, the need to make the daily crossing increased making waits and delays quite common.
• Although the idea of a bridge spanning the Golden Gate was not new, it was not until 1916 that plans began to take shape for the actual design of such a structure. The concept was met with great opposition from many sources, including the Union Pacific Railroad who owned the fleet of ferries. Another hindrance was the short supply of money as the nation was entering the years of the Great Depression.
• Construction of such a massive project was also deemed nearly impossible because of the harsh and dangerous working conditions surrounding the Golden Gate Strait. Workers would have to contend with swift tidal currents, deep, icy waters, strong wind gusts up to 60 mph, and regular recurrences of dense fog conditions.
• With the initial opposition and legal obstacles overcome, a plan for a suspension bridge designed by engineer Joseph Strauss was chosen. Construction finally began in 1933 with Strauss as chief engineer for the project.
• Twelve workers lost their lives during the bridge’s construction, far under the projected 35. This was due in large part to the strict safety
regulations instituted by Strauss, including madatory hard hats, daily sobriety tests and a large safety net. The net alone saved the lives of 19 men who would have otherwise fallen to their deaths.
• After four years of construction, The Golden Gate Bridge was opened to the public on May 28, 1937 at a total cost of $35 million. The 1.7 mile-long bridge was completed under budget and ahead of schedule. The San Francisco Chronicle headlines referred to the bridge as a “$35 million dollar steel harp.”
• At the time of its opening, the bridge boasted the longest suspension span in the world, at 4,200 feet. That record held until the Verrazano Narrows Bridge was constructed in New York City in 1964. Today, the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge in Japan holds the title.
• The two towers each rise 746 feet above the water and 500 feet above the roadway. Each tower contains more than 600,000 rivets.
• The bridge has six traffic lanes and currently charges a $6 dollar cash toll. The toll on its opening day was 50 cents one-way and $1 round trip.
• Painted a distinctive orange color, called “International Orange,” the color not only

• French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur is best known for creating the method of pasteurization to keep milk and wine from spoiling, but did you know that he also discovered vaccines for a number of diseases including rabies? Oddly enough, when Pasteur was in school his teachers considered his grasp of the basic concepts of chemistry to be quite limited.
• All coffee fanatics have Melitta Bentz to thank for making their morning waker-upper more enjoyable. Bentz was a typical German housewife who used her own ingenuity to invent the coffee filter, in 1908, some 300 years after the coffee beverage had been discovered. She revolutionized the perculation process by using blotting paper to filter out the grounds and unwanted residues.
• Before he made his contributions to our knowledge about space (as well as creating his many inventions), Italian born Galileo Galilei wanted to be a musician. His father insisted that he attend medical school at the University of Pisa, but Galileo never received his degree. He did, however, go on to publish his works, “The Starry Messenger,” presenting among many other findings that Earth is not at the center of the universe.
• Galileo had sound reasons for his claims about the design of the universe, but he was not the first to introduce this concept. Mathematician and astronomer Nicholas Copernicus also claimed that the sun was stationary and Earth revolved around it. His idea was harshly discredited by most at the time, but he is now regarded as the initiator of the Scientific Revolution.
• Although the Bunsen burner is named after German chemist Robert Bunsen, he never actually invented the iconic laboratory tool. Bunsen merely improved the design and function of an earlier device that served the same purpose.
• Since most scientists get their start through their association with college universities, it is only appropriate that Hungarian born László József Bíró, inventor of the ballpoint pen, began as a journalist and editor. With necessity often being the mother of invention, his brilliant idea in 1931stemmed from his annoyance and frustration of writing with the scratchy, uneven ink flow of a fountain pen.
• Forever changing the music industry, German immigrant Emile Berliner revolutionized sound recording by being the first person to start recording on flat disks or records. He went on to invent the gramophone and records. Did you know that the first records were made of glass long before they switched to plastic?
• Marie Skłodowska Curie, one of the world’s most famous female scientists, is celebrated for her discovery of the mysterious element radium, and coined the word “radioactivity”. A brilliant chemist and physicist, Madame Curie completely altered the way scientists thought about matter and energy and paved the way for the treatment of many diseases.
• Renowned for his work with atomic theory, England native John Dalton achieved his findings due to his high interest in meteorology. He kept weather records until his death and published a book titled “Meteorological Observations.” He later went on to explain his conclusions about atoms in “New System of Chemical Philosophy.”
• Scottish scientist James Watt was considered a “delicate” child and spent a great deal of his childhood homeschooled by his mother. He was considered slow to adapt in many academic areas -- except for math. Watt eventually invented the steam engine, and after Parliament granted him a patent that prevented anyone else from making a similar machine, Watt went on to control a steam engine dynasty.
• Forever famous for his invention of the printing press, German born Johannes Gutenberg began
as a goldsmith and blacksmith before making his contributions as an inventor. His invention of mechanical movable type printing started the Printing Revolution and is widely regarded as the most important event of the modern period.
American astronomer Edward Hubble is famous for work in the field of astrophysics. The Hubble Space Telescope is named for him, and it was his observation, known as “Hubble’s Law” that helped prove that the universe is expanding.
Sir Issac Newton, one of the most important minds in scientific history, is principally known for his theory of universal gravitation. He is also credited with laying the foundation for classical mechanics, optics and mathematics. Many of his influelntial theories were created in his early to mid 20s, but weren’t popularized until years later because Newton was notoriously secretive and resisted publishing his findings.

the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Frommers travel guide considers the Golden Gate Bridge “possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world”.
● It was pop art icon Andy Warhol who made the following sage observation: “It’s the movies that have really been running things in America since they were invented. They show you what to do, how to do it, when to do it, how to feel about it, and how to look when you feel about it.”
● If you were like the average rabbit, you would take 18 naps every day.
● You probably know that the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz” was based on the book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum. You may not realize, though, that Baum wrote a total of 14 Oz books between 1900 and 1920. The series con-tinued even after the author’s death; Ruth Plumly Thompson produced one Oz book every year between 1921 and 1939.
● Those who study such things say that wine was being drunk more than 7,000 years ago, in ancient Sumeria.
● When the Coca-Cola Company first started marketing its product in China, the advertisements used Chinese symbols to spell out the brand’s name phonetically. It was only after the ads had been published that the marketers learned that those sym-bols spelled out the phrase “bite the wax tadpole.”
● The manufacture of a single domestic automobile requires the use of a whopping 39,000 gallons of water.
● Every year, about 10 percent of the world’s population visits a zoo. In the Unit-ed States, though, about half of us make such a visit annually.
● Most people have about 100,000 hairs on their head. It’s not clear why, but red-heads tend to have somewhat fewer hairs -- about 90,000 -- while blondes have more. *** Thought for the Day: “I’m willing to ad-mit that I may not always be right, but I’m never wrong.” -- Samuel Goldwyn

The United States has been home to a great deal of renowned inventors over the years, each offering his or her own unique expertise and contributions to society. Here’s a look at some of the most famous inventors and their accomplishments. • Perhaps one of the most famous American
scientists and inventors, Benjamin Franklin is credited with discovering electricity. His numerous inventions include the bifocal lens, lightning rod, the Franklin stove, and more.
• A brilliant scientist and businessman, Thomas Edison is best known for inventing the electric light bulb. Other inventions include the motion picture camera and phonograph.
• Research chemist Percy Lavon Julian was a pioneer in the medical field for his work with medicinal drugs synthesized from plants and for producing hormones such as testosterone and progesterone from plant sterols.
• Most famous for concocting the recipe for peanut butter, George Washington Carver had a fruitful career in improving and/or inventing products such as axle grease, instant coffee, adhesives, buttermilk, bleach, metal polish, plastic and more.
• Portland, Oregon, native Linus Pauling was an expert in molecular structure and chemical bonds. He has authored more than 350 publications in his field and was named the Humanist of the Year in 1961. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1963.
• Famous for his contributions to the space program, Carl Sagan served as an advisor for NASA and solved many space exploration
mysteries surrounding planets including Venus and Mars in addition to briefing astronauts before they journeyed to the moon. Sagan received numerous NASA awards including the Exceptional Scientific Achievement Award, Apollo Achievement Award and Distinguished Public Service Award. He also authored numerous best sellers and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
• American rocketry pioneer Robert Goddard, considered the father of modern rocket propulsion, built the first rocket to use liquid fuel. It wasn’t until 14 years after he died in 1945 that he was posthumously awarded a gold medal by Congress. It is said that his first thoughts of rockets came to him while pruning cherry trees as a boy.
• Nobel Prize winner Barbara McClintock is one of the most famous American female scientists in the world. She is most recognized for her work and discoveries with chromosomes and genes. She was the first woman to win an unshared Nobel Prize, which she was awarded in 1983 in Physiology or Medicine.
• Mesmerized by the stars as a young boy, Clyde Tombaugh first decided to build a telescope because he was dissatisfied with the one he owned. Although he built more than 30 telescopes in his lifetime, Tombaugh is most famous for discovering Pluto.
• Although Tombaugh is credited with discovering Pluto, Astronomer Percival Lowell paved the way for him. Lowell predicted the existence of a planet beyond the orbit of Neptune. He’s also received recognition for his extensive studies

If you need an attorney as a result of a serious personal injury, there are certain things you should consider.
We feel it is inappropriate for a lawyer or representative to contact you as a result of an accident. In fact, unsolicited personal contact is prohibited by the State Bar. The decision to contact an attorney is yours and yours alone.
This means that you pay no attorney’s fees unless your lawyer either negotiates a settlement with your approval or wins a judgement in court. This method of compensation makes legal representation available to many who otherwise could not afford it. It also means that if your case has merit, you can be well represented by a qualifi ed attorney.
Ask friends or attorneys you know for references of personal injury lawyers, or check with the California Bar Association. It’s the best way to fi nd an ethical, competent attorney with the trial experience it takes to bring your case to a fair conclusion. Beware of the promises and claims some attorneys make in their ads.

Q: I can’t find new episodes of “Army Wives” on the TV schedule. Is it done for the season? -- Genie D., via e-mail
A: Don’t worry -- there will be 10 new epi-sodes of Lifetime’s “Army Wives” starting Sunday, June 24, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Note the new time slot, as “Wives” will now follow “Drop Dead Diva.” Upon the show’s return, Susan Lucci will be back in her guest-starring role. ***
Q: I watched the most wonderful doc-umentary on PBS the other night on the life of Johnny Carson. He is and always will be the best late-night talk show host, and I was very interested to learn about this usually private man. Will it air again soon? If not, can I buy it on DVD? -- Paul F., Altoona, Pa.
A: I know the documentary you are talking about, be-cause I watched it too and absolutely loved it. In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s -- when I was finally allowed to stay up late -- I watched “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” religiously, so I was thrilled to sneak a peek into this talented man’s life. You can stream “American Masters Johnny Carson: King of Late Night” on your computer at pbs.org/americanmasters. However, if you can wait until July 17, you can purchase the DVD (or Blu-ray) of the film, which will include outtakes and bonus material, through PBS Distribution. ***
Q: My wife and I loved the show “Cold Case,” and still watch the reruns. We wonder whatever happened to Kathryn Morris, who played Det. Lily Rush. We have seen all the oth-er lead characters on other shows, but not her. -- Ron C., Roanoke, Va.
A: The gorgeous 43-year-old just finished the short film “Sunday’s Mother,” and most recently co-starred with Denise Richards and Jim Belushi in the direct-to-DVD movie “Cougars, Inc.” She also played a small role in last year’s Oscar-nominated
film “Moneyball”; however, her part ended up on the cutting-room floor. I haven’t seen the DVD extras yet, but hopefully we can watch her there. I think your wife and you will agree that we need to see Kathryn in a leading role on another hit series - stat! ***
Q: My two favorite new shows of this past season were both on Fox: “Touch” and “Alcatraz.” Will they be back for another sea-son? -- Sienna F., via e-mail
A: I’ve got good news and bad news. Want the bad news first? Fox has opted not to pick up “Al-catraz” for a second season. While it debuted pretty strong in the ratings, each week saw a steady decline in viewers, and it lost more than half its initial viewers by season’s end. “Touch,” however will be back for a second season. And, in case you were wondering, “American Dad,” “Bones,” “The Cleveland Show,” “Fringe,” “Glee,” “Kitchen Nightmares,” “New Girl,” “Raising Hope” and “The Simpsons” will all be back for new seasons come fall.

DE-STRING THE CELERY. While celery might be a dieter’s friend, the strings are a nui-sance. My husband suggested using the vegetable peeler to remove the strings, and it worked. Not only does it vastly improve the taste and texture of the celery for snacking, it makes chopping a breeze. -- Carol, Oregon
REFRIGERATOR WHITE BOARD. Our new refrigerator has a smooth finish, and we started using the top area as a dry-erase white board, keeping track of our shopping list and writing notes. Somehow a permanent marker got used, but I didn’t know it. I tried just about everything, but nothing worked to erase the marker stain. Finally, I grabbed the bottle of liquid Bar Keeper’s Friend that we use for the glass on our wood-burning stove. It took a few applications, but it worked! We still use the fridge as a white board, but I’ve hidden all the permanent markers. -- Pamela, New York
RIP OFF THE CELLOPHANE. When trying to open a cellophane wrapper on an item, I use a seam ripper. It works better than using a pair of scissors. -- Joy, Virginia
DAWN RISES ON STAINS. I discovered recently that Dawn with bleach alternative removes many stains. I spilled red wine on a new yellow top and it had dried before I was able to treat it. I put the top in a bucket of cold water with a squirt of the detergent and let it stand overnight. Voila! No more wine stain. -- Laurel, via email
COMPACTOR BAGS REALLY SAVE. The Space Saver Bags that are advertised on TV are nice, but they don’t last long. Within a year, the bags began to break down and tear. I found that plastic trash compactor bags are a great replace-ment. I put my items in the bag (making sure noth-ing sharp is sticking up), wrap the opening around the vacuum hose and vacuum the air out. I twist the hose and bag as I pull out the hose, and tie the bag closed with twine. These bags are thicker, hold up longer and cost a lot less. -- DebbiSu, West Virginia
NO STICKY MESS. I really like coconut macaroons, but they are too sticky to work with. I spray a 1/4 cup measuring cup with Pam, pack it half full of dough, turn it upside down and tap it onto the parchment paper. Perfectly formed maca-roons and no sticky mess. -- Nancy, Wisconsin
TIDE FOR THE TOILET. We have well water, and I have tried everything to clean my toilet, but nothing cleaned to my satisfaction. Out of frustration, I tossed in the solution of Tide detergent that I had left over from cleaning my deck. Imagine my surprise when the Tide left a sparkling clean bowl behind. -- Mary, Pennsylvania

Hurry Up and Wait Too many veterans have waited far too long for mental-health care. The Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Veterans Affairs was asked to look at whether the Veterans Health Administration is ac-curately recording the wait times for mental-health services for both existing and new patients. Policy states that if a veteran calls in and asks for help, he or she is to be seen within 24 hours. If after the initial evaluation the veteran is not immediately given services (hospitalization or outpatient care), a more-comprehensive evaluation must take place within 14 days. This would include a diagnostic and treatment plan. VHA is to calculate wait times by figuring the days from the desired date of care to the date of the actual appointment. This assumes, of course, that the right date is entered into the system. The VAOIG determined that: 1) VHA doesn’t have a reliable way to determine whether it’s giv-ing services on time; 2) VHA doesn’t provide initial appointments within that 24-hour window; 3) Veter-ans are waiting far past that 14-day window for their treatment plan appointments. As always, the devil is in the details. The VA’s own 2011 performance report claimed that 95 percent had their evaluation with 14 days. Not so, said the VAOIG. The VA’s inaccu-rate calculations were based on the time between the actual appointment date and the time the evalu-ation was complete ... often on the same day, which looked like a wait of zero days. It wasn’t calculating how long it took to get the appointment, which might have been weeks. The VAOIG looked at selected records and determined that only 49 percent of veterans had their evaluation within 14 days. The average wait was 50 days to get a full evaluation. Fifty days is a long time for a veteran who is seeking help. To read the whole report, go online to www.va.gov/oig/pubs/VAOIG-12-00900-168.pdf.

No Free Lunches “It all started when my dog began getting free roll over minutes.” -- Jay London
We Americans are staunch in our conviction that we must pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, earn our keep, dance for our dinner. But our dogs? Not so much. A great majority of American dogs spend eight or more hours every weekday snoozing on the couch, waiting for their hardworking humans to come home and deliver dinner and a belly rub -- free of charge. It’s high time our dogs got off the continental breakfast bandwagon. After all, you don’t get some-thin’ for nothin’. Am I right, folks? OK, so I’m not suggesting you tell your dog to get a job or get out. But I would like to introduce you to the wide world of mental and physical stimula-tion for dogs. We all know that a tired dog is a good dog. Start your dog’s day with a walk or a run before breakfast. This provides exercise, which drains en-ergy and maintains fitness. It also offers the mental stimulation of moving beyond his small world, espe-cially if you change your route regularly. Just make sure he “sits” and “waits” before fastening the leash and exiting the door. After all, an outing is a major life reward that should be earned. And don’t stop there. Instead of spooning your dog’s morning meal into a bowl and handing it over as the ultimate freebie, divide it in half. Stuff one half into one of the many food puzzle toys on the market and put that aside for when you leave for work. Take the other half and turn it into a game of Find It. Here’s how you play: Have your dog “sit” and “stay.” Go to a room or section of the yard where he can’t see you, and hide small piles of his kibble in various places. When you’re done, instruct your dog to “find it.” Set your dog up to succeed by easing him into the game. Food should be at least partially vis-ible until your dog gets the hang of working his nose to find it. It’s not unusual to have to point him in the right direction initially. Gradually increase the difficulty as your dog’s sniffer proves itself worthy. Advanced games of Find It involve hiding treats and

TUES., JAN. 24
A Cure for Alzheimer’s Saves a Fortune in Care The aging of the baby boomers will lead to an explosion in the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and other memory disorders. In the next 30 years, the number of 85-year-olds in the United States will triple, and of these, 50 percent will have memory loss and be unable to live independently. Those in the know understand the over-whelming nature of this crisis, and it is for this reason that the development of a national plan to address Alzheimer’s disease by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services was received with en-thusiasm. Here is a summary of the five goals they have developed. GOAL 1: Prevent and effectively treat Al-zheimer’s disease by 2025. Changes in the brain occur 20 years before symptoms develop. To be ef-fective, early diagnosis is crucial and treatment must be initiated years before symptoms take hold. The plan urges more money for Alzheimer’s research and a more coordinated nationwide and global re-search effort aimed at early diagnosis and finding a cure. There must be rapid implementation of major discoveries into clinical practice. GOAL 2: Enhance care quality and efficien-cy. We, as a nation, have little interest in the man-agement of chronic diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
We must train health care providers in how to diag-nose and manage the complex and difficult symp-toms in older patients with memory loss who also have multiple medical problems. To meet this objec-tive, standard guidelines of care must be developed. No single health care provider can meet the need of these patients and their families. The best approach is to create teams of health care professionals, in-cluding social workers, nurses, a neuropsychologist and others who are able to deal with the medical, behavioral and family problems that develop as the disease progresses. GOAL 3: Expand support for people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families. Nothing is harder than watching a loved one’s personality, in-tellectual function and behavior gradually slip away and disappear, while his or her physical well-being remains intact. Currently, the majority of patients and families lack the necessary understanding of the disease and has no training in how to deal with day-to-day problems. To meet this goal, the plan emphasizes the importance of culturally sensitive education and training materials that allow patients in the early phase of the disease to understand the problem and prepare for the future, along with their caretakers. There is a strong emphasis on meeting the needs of caregivers, who some studies have found are at an increased risk of developing an illness, be-coming overwhelmed and reaching a breaking point that can lead to neglect and abuse of the patient. Nurturing the caregiver is the best way to ensure that the dignity, safety and rights of patients are pro-tected. As the disease progresses, medical and behavioral problems can make it impossible for the patient to continue living at home. Specialized as-sisted-living and memory-disorder centers must be developed to meet the needs of an Alzheimer’s pa-tient in a safe, loving and appropriate environment with well-trained employees who understand how
best to manage the patient. GOAL 4: Enhance public awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. State and local communities must prepare for the aging of the baby boomers and the growing Alzheimer’s epidemic. To accom-plish this goal, the public must be educated about Alzheimer’s disease so that creative approaches to dealing with the illness can be developed. GOAL 5: Improve data to track progress. Over the course of the next 13 years, when a cure for Alzheimer’s will hopefully be in hand, progress toward meeting each of the goals must be closely monitored. This will require a huge investment in da-ta-management resources to monitor this large and ambitious plan. As a nation, we should be enthusiastic about easing the burden of Alzheimer’s. Sadly, the cost of providing care and redesigning communities to meet the needs of its older, more forgetful population will be challenging and expensive. It is for this reason that the greatest commitment must be on finding a cure and eradicating the disease. For every dollar spent on research that leads to a cure, billions will be saved and the quality of many lives improved.

How Retirement Benefits Are Figured I’m getting a little embarrassed apologizing for messing up with my email responses to readers. I pride myself that I am still able to personally respond to every email I get. But I am a computer Neander-thal. I can just barely handle the software programs I need to know to write this column and submit it to my syndicator; and to respond to emails from my readers. Recently, I was in the middle of answering an email from a guy who wanted to know how So-cial Security retirement benefits were figured, when all of a sudden, my fast-moving typing fingers must have accidentally hit an odd combination of keys and POOF, my entire answer was translated into Japa-nese! Actually, I’m not sure if it was Japanese, but it looked like what I imagine Japanese writing to look. Anyway, in my attempts to remedy that er-ror, I must have hit another odd combination of keys when POOF again, the entire document disappeared! And I was never able to retrieve it. So if there is some reader out there who had questions about Social Security computations and is wondering why I never responded to his email, please send it again. I’ll type my response more slowly and carefully and hope I am able to keep it in English and hit the “send” key before I delete it again! In the meantime, I thought it might be a good time to explain once again (I do this every couple years or so) how Social Security retirement benefits are figured. The formula is simple in a general sense, but very complicated when you get to the nitty gritty details. Here is the simple part: A Social Security retirement benefit is a percentage of your average monthly income, using your highest 35 years of infla-tion-adjusted earnings. Note that there are four parts to that formula: 1) a percentage; 2) your average monthly income; 3) an inflation-indexing factor; and 4) a 35-year base. We’ll work backwards to explain how things work. The 35-year base is the easy part. When you file for retirement benefits, the Social Security Ad-ministration will look at your entire earnings history and pull out your highest 35 years. They don’t have to be consecutive. If you don’t have 35 years of earn-ings, SSA must plug in “zero” years to get to the 35-year base. And please note that 35 means 35! Despite all the rumors out there, your retirement benefit is NOT based on your highest 5 years of earnings, or your last 10 years of earnings; or any other number of years other than 35. Here is a related issue based on that 35- year rule. As part of the discussion of long range Social Security reform, you will frequently hear proposals to change the “computation years.” A number I’ve heard most often is adopting a 38-year base. What they are talking about is basing future Social Security benefits on a retiree’s highest 38 years, rather than the highest 35. That would have the effect of low-ering future benefits because the more base years used, the lower benefits are. Think of it this way: if your retirement computation was based on your high three years of earnings, for example, that would result in a much higher benefit than one based on 35 years. So, adding even more years to the base would lower benefits further.
But now let’s get back to the current compu-tation formula. Before they add up those “high 35,” they index each year of past earnings for inflation. And this is where the formula starts to get messy. That’s because there is a different adjustment factor for each year of earnings, AND each year’s adjust-ment factor is different based on your year of birth. Here is a quick example. If you were born in 1949, and earned $20,000 in 1980, they would multi-ply those earnings by an inflation adjustment factor of 3.25, meaning they would actually use $65,000 as your 1980 earnings. But if you were born in 1950 and earned that same $20,000 in 1980, they would use an inflation factor of 3.33 resulting in $66,600 as the 1980 earnings used in your Social Security computa-tion. You can find a complete breakdown of those inflation adjustment factors for each year of birth (for folks nearing retirement age) at www.socialse-curity.gov/pubs/10070.html. So the next step in the retirement computa-tion formula is to add up your highest 35 years of inflation-adjusted earnings. Then you divide by 420 -- that’s the number of months in 35 years -- to get your average inflation-adjusted monthly income. The final step brings us to the “social” part of Social Security. The percentage of your average monthly income that comes back to you in the form of a Social Security benefit depends on your income. In a nutshell, the lower your average wage, the high-er percentage rate of return you get. Once again, the actual formula is messy, and varies depending on your year of birth. As an example, here is the for-mula for someone born in 1949. You take the first $749 of average monthly income and multiply by 90 percent. You take the next $3,768 of your average monthly income and multiply that by 32 percent. And you take any remainder and multiply it by 15 percent. You can find a complete breakdown of those computation “bend points” at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10007.html.

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau
kibble in flowerpots, under cushions and behind furniture, rocks and trees. This kind of nose work is both physically and mentally exhausting. And it of-fers the added bonus of reinforcing training and the notion that you control all good things in life. When your dog has successfully “found it” all, and when you’re ready to get on with your day, hide the food puzzle toy (offered in varying degrees of difficulty) that contains the other half of his break-fast and instruct him to “find it” before you leave the house. (Again, how well you hide it should corre-spond with the skill of your dog’s nose.) Voila! Men-tal and physical stimulation even in your absence. Repeat for dinner. Countless toys and games of this nature ex-ist for the pleasure and growth of you and your dog. Hide-and-Seek is a version of Find It that uses you as the ultimate reward. Fetch is a great game that reinforces training -- “here, “drop it, “give,” “fetch” -- and provides an awesome physical workout. Agility classes, pack hikes, playdates, trips to the dog park, and group or one-on-one training sessions are all forms of mental and physical stimulation that ward off boredom and all the behavioral problems that come with it. Sorry, pups. No more free lunches! Woof!

Watchful Waiting for Prostate Cancer? DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am an 80-year-old male whose annual physical exam was good. My wife and I have a good sex life. We’ve been married 61 years. However, my PSA rose to 5.7. My fam-ily doctor sent me to a urologist, who suggested a biopsy. The urologist said my prostate gland is normal for my age and had no hard spots or lumps. My dad died at 87 due, in part, to prostate cancer. A brother also had difficulties. I read that at my age, I should enjoy life without such procedures. Your opinion, please. -- B.M.
ANSWER: What to do when the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test is higher than normal is a controversial subject. Every year, about 192,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Close to 70 percent of those cancers are low-grade, meaning they don’t pose a serious threat to life. Such cancers, depending on the man’s age and his health, may not require any treatment other than scheduled monitoring. One of the ingredients that goes into the mix for making a decision for “active surveillance” is what’s seen on the biopsy. The pathologist exam-ining the prostate tissue discovers if any cancer is present and assesses the cancer’s stage and its po-tential to be an aggressive cancer. If the cancer is in its early stages and if its appearance is one that’s not threatening, then the decision for treatment is some-thing that can be discussed with the doctor. Quality of life is as important as extension of life. However, I believe you should have the biopsy. It has some rare complications, but it provides information not obtain-able in any other way. You are a very young 80-year-old. You have no other health problems that might shorten your life. You have a family history of prostate cancer. If the biopsy shows a low-grade cancer, then talk to the doctor about your wishes. One of those wishes could be active surveillance. The booklet on the prostate gland discusses gland enlargement and cancer. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1001W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Cana-da with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 52-year-old male in good health. I am not a drinker or a
smoker. My problem is premature ejaculation. I am on no medicines. Are there any vitamins or supplements that would help me? -- Anon.
ANSWER: This discussion should start with your family doctor. The doctor can, after talking with you, decide if the problem is physical or psycho-logical. Both are possible causes. Anxiety, depres-sion and prostate gland inflammation are examples of things that can lead to your problem. Sometimes simply starting and stopping and then restarting relations will solve the problem. A numbing agent like the combination of lidocaine and prilocaine cream might be helpful. A condom should be worn so that your partner isn’t affected by the cream. Fluoxetine, paroxetine and sertraline are medicines that have been successful for some men. Vitamins or supplements are not likely to help. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Grab the Brass Ring Many of us have retired and then discov-ered that retirement isn’t all it was cracked up to be. Maybe we got pushed out by downsizing. Maybe we felt the time had come to stop working because we’d reached a certain age. Now many of us miss having a purpose, structure and a reason to get up every day. Certainly we miss the people we worked with and feeling valuable. Often we’re simply bored. If you go online and Google the words “seniors retired bored” you’ll get more than 7 mil-lion hits. But here is a truth: We don’t have to stay retired. If your retirement isn’t what you’d expected, consider alternate paths you’d like to take for the rest of your life. Think back: What did you truly want to do with your life? Many women were pushed into mother and wife roles. If you’re a man, perhaps a college education wasn’t possible, so you created the best life you could. But now you have time -- and opportunities. If you’re lucky enough to live near a col-lege or university, inquire about auditing (no credit) classes on topics that interest you. Maybe you’ll even go on to get a degree. Make a list of everything you know how to do, and offer to teach a class. Reading, swimming safety, woodworking, sewing, bookkeeping, pho-tography, art, home repair and other skills are all valuable to someone else. Explore volunteer positions in your area and put your skills to use. Look at an AARP site [www.createthegood.org] and either sign up for a volunteer slot or get on the list to be notified of future opportunities. You might be astounded at the number of volunteer requests in your ZIP code. Decide how you’d like to spend your time. Then do it.
Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally an-swer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

Dear Doug
Creators News Syndicate
● On June 21, 1788, New Hampshire be-comes the ninth and last necessary state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, thereby making the document the law of the land. Massachusetts had initially opposed the document as it failed to reserve undel-egated powers to the states.
● On June 23, 1902, German automaker Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) first registers “Mercedes” as a brand name. The famous Mercedes symbol, a three-point star, was registered as a trademark in 1909.
● On June 24, 1915, young German fighter pilot Oswald Boelcke makes the first operational flight of the Fokker Eindecker plane. The Fokker was equipped with ma-chine guns that could fire straight ahead through the aircraft’s propeller. The precise timing of the gun to fire between the spinning blades allowed them to fire in rapid succes-sion without destroying their own propellor.
● On June 18, 1923, the first Checker Cab rolls off the line at the Checker Cab Manufacturing Company in Kalamazoo, Mich. The shipment stood out as a major landmark in the history of the company, which by then employed some 700 people.
● On June 19, 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were convicted of conspir-ing to pass U.S. atomic secrets to the Soviet Communists, are executed by the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, N.Y. Both refused to admit any wrongdoing and proclaimed their innocence right up to the time of their deaths.
● On June 22, 1964, Dan Brown, au-thor of the international blockbuster “The Da Vinci Code” as well as other best-selling thrillers, is born in New Hampshire. Brown’s novels are known for involving symbols, conspiracies and secret societies. His first novel, “Digital Fortress,” was published in 1998.
● On June 20, 1980, in a match in Mon-treal, Roberto Duran out-points “Sugar” Ray Leonard to win the World Boxing Council welterweight title. Yet, five months later in a rematch, with less than 30 seconds left in the eighth round, Duran looked at the refer-ee and famously uttered the words “no mas” or “no more,” giving up.

Mom’s in Love? Q: Our precious mother was widowed nearly five years ago, and she continues to live in our family home. She is in good health and mentally very sharp. She has social security and some investments, plus a mortgage-free home. My sister and I believe she has ample income and assets to live out her life comfort-ably. We split our visits with her on alternating weeks and stay in contact by phone. However, as my sister was leaving from her last visit, a next-door neighbor stopped her and whispered that our mom is seriously think-ing about getting remarried to a man named Ed. My sister was stunned by this as Mom has never once mentioned that she was even dating anyone. I could scarcely believe the news. As a caring and somewhat protective son, my reaction is to tell Mom to be extremely cautious and put off any long-term plans imme-diately. My sister wants for both of us to con-front her together and talk her out of it entirely. I don’t think this is the way to approach the issue. I would like your opinion.
A: Whoa! Approach your mom diplomati-cally and lovingly to first learn what the real facts are. Oftentimes what others say can be greatly ex-aggerated or based on sketchy information. Your mom’s “boyfriend” may just be a casual friend, or she may just be lonely and fantasizing a bit. Until you do your homework and actually know the truth, it’s very unwise to jump to hasty conclusions. What her neighbor said and what the situation really is may well be two different things! There is no harm in asking your mother if there is any truth to what you’ve heard, but do not do it confrontationally! If there is something serious go-ing on between her and Ed, she shouldn’t have any problem telling you about it once she knows you’re aware of it. It is completely understandable that you want to be protective of your mom’s best interests, but be careful not to overstep your bounds. It sounds as though your mother is of sound mind, good health, able to think for herself and make her own decisions. If this is the case, it is really her own busi-ness and not yours or your sister’s. If it turns out that she and Ed are indeed an “item,” arrange for you and your sister to have an opportunity to meet him. Suggest that you all meet for dinner so you can both get acquainted with him. Make some careful observations: Is he mak-ing your mother happy? Is he in good health? Is his temperament compatible with your mom’s? Does he have his own assets? Is he in debt? Are they both on the same track spiritually? Does his family know about his relationship with your mom? Is she truly interested in making another commitment? Where would they plan to live? The number of questions you may want to ask is quite open-ended. Remember that your mother has raised you, supported you and is still in control of her own life. Let her know both your positive and negative feel-ings about the relationship, but keep in mind that, regardless of what your personal opinions may be, the final decision is entirely hers alone. * * *
Q: I have two wonderful friends who I love to see because they are always upbeat and get me in a good mood. I would like to be more like them, but I don’t know how. How does somebody change and just stay happy?
A: It is usually an individual’s positive at-titude that attracts others. We all choose our own at-titudes, so that should be a big clue for you.
Happiness can be defined as enjoying plea-sure, laughing, loving, sharing and keeping oneself in that frame of mind. Be aware of your thoughts. When you find yourself thinking negative things, rebuke those thoughts and instead dwell only on pleasant, positive things that make you feel peace. Discipline yourself to do this and you, and others, will notice a change in your attitude and demeanor. Happy individuals don’t look backward, but forward. None of us can change our past, but we can do everything about our future! Doug Mayberry makes the most of life in a Southern California retirement community. Contact him at [email protected]. Antique Secretary Style Is Eclectic Q: My husband received the antique desk seen in this photo from his grandfather’s estate in Westminster, Md., in the early 1980s. It is made of oak and does need some restora-tion. The original finish needs restoration most-ly on the drawers, and there is a piece missing on the side of the cornice. What can you tell us about it and its val-ue?
A: As a rule, your desk is called a secre-tary. The difference being a secretary is in two sepa-rate parts, the top usually has shelves behind glass doors. The top has a cornice often with a scrolled pediment. A desk has a flat top. Your secretary was factory made around 1900. The style is eclectic, having borrowed decora-tive elements of the colonial period and also reflects the ingenuity and designs of Grand Rapids, Mich., manufacturers. Similar secretaries can be found selling in the range of $800 to $1,200 in very good condition and not in need of restoration.
Q: In 1965, my aunt brought a Nishi geisha doll back from Japan for my mother. The doll is 12 inches tall and in a glass case. She is sitting and holding a musical instrument. The bottom of the case has a mark with the words “Nishi & Company, Ltd. - Japan.” I was 5 years old in 1965 and I am now 53. She has been kept in perfect condition all these years, and now I would like to know her value.
A: Nishi dolls are collectible and yours would probably be worth $200 to $300. * * *
Q: I am curious about this mark that is on a vase we inherited from my great aunt. The vase stands 9 inches tall, is decorated with a green glaze and has handles on either side.
Anything you can tell us will be greatly appreciated.
A: Abingdon Pottery in Abingdon, Ill., made your vase. They started out producing por-celain plumbing pieces in 1908. In 1934, they intro-duced an art pottery line. The company was taken over by Briggs Manufacturing Co. in 1947. Their pot-tery was sold at Marshall Field’s, Wannamaker’s and Gimbles Department Stores. By 1950, demand for their art pottery declined. At the same time, there was a surge in the market for plumbing fixtures. Briggs Manufacturing Co. discontinued their art pottery line and moved forward with their profits to make plumbing fixtures. Your vase was made around 1940 and would probably be worth $25 to $50.

The Nets Have Left New Jersey People saw it coming for years. The two were never really head over heels over one another to begin with -- it seemed to be more a marriage of convenience after the ABA folded and Dr. J moved on to Philadelphia. The Nets became a team that seemed to be going through the motions in the Meadowlands, hidden behind a pay chan-nel called “SportsChannel” that nobody wanted to watch (Devils owner John McMullen once famously said he didn’t “think SportsChannel [was] the most popular channel in the state.”) The Nets were basically the NBA’s version of “Brenda and Eddie,” and now New Jersey is waving Brenda and Eddie goodbye. The franchise’s move from the swamps of Seacaucus across the river to Brooklyn, N.Y., is firmly set in brownstone. It is perhaps the crown-ing achievement in the decades-long revitalization of the borough that until recent times considered a three-second clip from the opening credits of “Wel-come Back Kotter” and the loss of the Dodgers to California as its primary claims to fame. Times have changed. Brooklyn, for the better part of this century, has been booming. The old blue-collar canneries and sweatshops that once dotted the Gowanus Bay, rusting away in full view of Manhattan, have since been transformed into vibrant loft spaces and production areas. Most new residents rode in on the internet/Apple wave. It’s easy to see why the area took off. But who’d have thought they’d take the Nets, too? To those unfamiliar with the relationship, it doesn’t seem fair. New Jersey and the Nets have spent the mediocre part of 35 years together, and this is how it ends? “Crooklyn” steals the girl? Don’t weep for New Jersey -- it can handle it. It’s state capital’s motto is “Trenton makes, the world takes.” It can handle the breakup. In fact, not only will it handle the breakup, it just might beat Los Angeles -- the city that stole the Dodgers from Brooklyn -- for the championship. Feelings of jealousy would be understand-able in Brooklyn as the Devils skated around downtown Newark with the Stanley Cup held high. Isn’t that always the way? Your ex looks better than ever, particularly since you’ve learned she is just fine without you. “My message to the Nets is goodbye,” said New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at a recent press conference. “You don’t want to stay here, we don’t want you? [You] want to leave here and go to Brooklyn? Good riddance -- see you later.” So yeah, congratulations, Brooklyn. You’ve successfully wooed the Nets away from New Jer-sey. They’re your problem now.

The Smasher and the Simply Smashing
Before he hit the 40-feet hook shot out of the straw to take him to within two putts of the Green Jacket, a little bit of banter in the room turned to what Bubba Watson was wearing.
As most of us know by now, Bub-ba Watson won the Masters, largely due to his monstrous 300-plus yard drives and unorthodox swinging style. But I, too, became curious about Watson’s game and, yes, his style, too.
For the techies out there, Watson uses a PING G20 driver with a cus-tom pink True Temper Grafalloy Bi-Matrix shaft. The same exact driver will be made available to pro shops this year, the company announced after the tournament.
Pink is a color that most sports fans are becoming accustomed to. It appears in splashes on various uni-forms these days to signify the fight against breast cancer, a cause that has successfully managed to co-opt that color and increase awareness. Knowing this, we were all a little leery of making fun of the color.
And we were right: Ping donates $300 to Watson’s charity for every 300-foot drive he makes. His Phoe-nix-based charity aims to donate $1 million to various organizations
during the year, and after this win, it’s a safe bet to say it will do so.
But his manner of dress and that unorthodox swinging style also reminded me of former PGA tour-nament winner from the ‘60s, Doug Sanders.
Known as the “Peacock of the Fairways,” Sanders came out of nowhere to win the Canadian Open as an amateur. His best finish at the Masters was a fourth place tie, and he won 20 events on the Tour, but Sanders was best known for his manner of dress. Sanders was famous for his “Mad Men”-esque devotion to what he wore. He was known to wear golf shoes that looked more like dress shoes, pleated golf plants, button-down cardigans and a golf polo. Each out-fit had complimentary colors of the same shade, and he even made sure his golf bags matched his outfit.
While both Sanders and Watson are philanthropists and champions, they have something else in com-mon — they’re both self-taught golfers. Neither has taken a lesson in his life. Sanders grew up a poor cotton farmer’s son; Watson’s father was a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who gave him a 9-iron once and told him to “beat it down the fairway.”
Well, Watson surely will be beat-ing it down the fairway for a while now, and nobody will make fun of his clothes anymore, but I have one suggestion — and I’m sure Mr. Sanders would agree — you should at least shave before putting on the Green Jacket. Sure he won in a play-off, but this isn’t hockey, you know.

His printing press played a key role in the development of the Renaissance, Reformation, the Age of Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution. It virtually paved the way for the modern knowledge-based economy and the spread of learning to the masses
• Known as the Father of Geometry, ancient Greek Mathematician Euclid published his ideas in “The Elements,” and his teachings influenced Western mathematics for more than 2,000 years. Since it is estimated that he lived from 325 BC-265 BC, little more is known about his life.
• Born into a prominent family of wealth, Italian scientist Amedeo Avogadro followed in his family’s footsteps to practice law but couldn’t shake his interest in the natural sciences. He studied physics and math in private for years before he published his hypothesis about molecules that was eventually labeled Avogadro’s Law.
• German physicist Wilhelm Rontgen is known for discovering X-rays and received great recognition for his findings, including streets named in his honor, countless awards and the Nobel Prize in Physics.
• German physician and bacteriologist Robert Koch made a discovery that changed medicine forever: All diseases were not caused by bad air but instead by bacteria. He was able to find the causes of such deadly diseases of tuberculosis, cholera and the cycle of anthrax. Koch won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1905.
• Although he was expected to enter the medical field, Frederick Sanger’s interest in nature and science was too strong. Because of his work with proteins and DNA, Sanger won two Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, one in 1958 and one in 1980. He was the first person to find a protein sequence.
