We also feel some of these are worth exploring, so join us as Tidbits looks into, over, around and through a few of the more interesting mountain passes we found. • So what is a mountain pass? It is the most easily accessible point between mountains where you can “pass” through. The pass is considered the highest point or summit at which you traverse the area. Passes have always been very important finds for pioneers moving across the country, as well as road and rail builders. The definition of a mountain pass is actually: “The location in a range of mountains of a geological formation that is lower than the surrounding peaks.” • Other terms used in North America for a pass are saddle, notch and gap. Pass and saddle are most commonly used in the West, while the East Coast tends to use the terms notch and gap. • Semo La, a pass in central Tibet, at 18,258 feet, is considered to be the highest pass accessible by vehicles. There are many beautiful mountain ranges in the world but few are as recognizable as the majestic peaks in Grand Teton National Park near Jackson, Wyoming. Follow along as we learn some facts about this snow-capped, picturesque mountain rangelocatedinthewesternU.S.

When Grand Teton National Park was firstestablished in 1929, it encompassed only themountainpeaksandthelakesnearthebase.Ittook years of wrangling with local ranchers, residents, sheepherders, politicians and others before the park boundaries would be enlarged.

During the years of debate, many pushed forthe Teton Range of mountains and the valley of Jackson Hole, including the town of Jackson, Wyoming, to be included in Yellowstone National Park.

The Appalachian Mountains of Eastern North America have some incredible scenery. The Blue Ridge Parkway is the ranges most cel-ebrated route, 469 miles long, along the high crests of the mountains from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina.

Franconia Notch, a mountain pass between the Kinsman and Franconia Mountain Ranges in New Hampshire, is known for its beautiful fall colors. The area is also known for The Old Man of the Mountain rock formation. Discovered in 1805, the formation was made famous in a story by Nathaniel Hawthorne published in 1850. The Old Man was made the official trademark of the state in 1945, but it collapsed in 2003.

Whether youre using the word shovel as a noun or a verb, it refers either way to some sort of manual labor. For our purposes here well explore the noun version, which the dictionary definesasaninstrumentforliftingorscoopingloose material, such as earth, gravel, coal, etc., consisting of a curved blade or scoop attached to a handle. Archeological findings show that shovels in

one form or another were used as instruments for digging by the earliest known civilizations. When people reasoned that they needed the help of a tool, they learned to invent one and fashion it from whatever materials were available. The most primitive shovels found were made from the shoulder blades of oxen.

Q: Like you, I am an avid fan of New Girl on Fox. I was wondering what happened to Coach, the character played by Damon Way-ans Jr., who was in the first episode and then suddenly left? -- Giselle F., via e-mail

A: When New Girl filmed its pilot episode in spring 2011, the orig-inal roommates were Coach (played by Da-mon), Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Nick (Jake Johnson), with Jess (Zooey Descha-nel) taking Winstons room, since he was off playing basketball in Latvia. However, Damon also was co-starring on the ABC show Happy Endings, which at the time New Girl began production was look-ing like it wasnt going to get renewed for another season. So, when Happy Endings did indeed get renewed, the producers at New Girl had to find a new fourth roommate and opted for Winston (Lam-

orne Morris) to return from Latvia to reclaim his old room. ***

Q: I was super-bummed when I found out that Cougar Town wasnt going to air on ABC until January as a midseason replace-ment, and now I am hearing that that might not even happen! Please tell me it hasnt been can-celed. -- Bridget D. in North Carolina

A: I have good news and bad news: The goods news is that Cougar Town will be back this season; the bad news is its return has been pushed back until March. More bad news: Instead of its planned 22-epi-sode season, the order has been cut to 15 episodes. This news makes me super-bummed too, as I have been going through some serious withdrawals, and have been forced to drink wine out of Big Joe while reading Laurie Kellers hilarious Twitter feed (twit-ter.com/TheLarmy) and throwing pennies in my Bobby Cobb Official Competition Penny Jar as I wait with bated breath for some new episodes from my fa-vorite Pinot-swilling gals and their awesome sidekick fellas. ***

Q: A while back you mentioned that Fox was going to make an animated version of Napoleon Dynamite. Are those plans still go-ing forward? -- Jeremy G., via e-mail

A: Its full-steam ahead on the weekly car-toon adaption of Napoleon Dynamite, which will be voiced by the movies stars, including John Heder, Efren Ramirez, Tina Majorino, Aaron Ruell, John Gries and the gang. The 13-episode series premieres on Sunday, Jan. 15, at 8:30 ET, right in the middle of Foxs super-successful animation block. ***

Q: I was watching Robocop over the weekend and wondered what its star, Peter Weller, can be seen in now? He was so good in that movie! -- George T., Omaha, Neb.

A: Peter Weller, who very recently was a regular on Dexter playing Stan Liddy, is the latest big-name star to be cast in the newest Star Trek movie, which is yet untitled. The films details are being kept under wraps, but I can tell you that Peter is playing a principal character in the May 2013 se-quel to the 2009 megablockbuster.

Remind Lawmakers of the Job They Have to Do Did you have to rush to get everything done this holiday season? Perhaps you headed off to a vacation in warmer climes -- or maybe you just set-tled for some quality time at home with your family. In any case, you know the feeling of trying to get everything done in the last few days before the clock chimes the final hour. And while you will hurry to get all the im-portant year-end stuff at work finished because its expected of you and you know your superiors are watching, it seems that Congress shares no such sense of duty or urgency. Although we, the people, are their boss, it does not appear that Congress could care less. You wouldnt be able to hide your year-end project under a stack of other stuff and walk away from work with a clear conscience. But, disturbingly, members of Congress seem completely comfortable with postponing the duties required and expected of them for a couple of months while they take off on an extended vacation. Do they think that we, the people, wont notice? Apparently so. It took until the last minute to pass a year-end $1 trillion spending bill to keep the government operating. Perhaps the ultimate pressure of return-ing home to face the electorate finally got to them. But they cant agree on extending the payroll tax cut. And still up in the air is an extension of un-employment benefits and reimbursement rates for physicians who see Medicare patients -- two issues

that have a real impact if they are not dealt with im-mediately. Of course, a big part of this is the process of jockeying for political and public relations suprema-cy in an election year. Even projects that both sides agree would be good for the economy are held hos-tage to the process. A pipeline that would create energy indepen-dence and thousands of jobs has been postponed until after the 2012 elections -- despite the fact that both laboring Americans and big business have rea-son to agree to its construction. Why the hangup on this one pipeline when we have many thousands of miles of pipelines criss-crossing America? Approval of this issue benefits both sides of the aisle -- both big business and blue-collar work-ers. So why has this pipeline, which is a real eco-nomic issue, been turned into a political hot potato? Its because the green organizations who oppose it are big political contributors. Weve all felt the desire to procrastinate, despite the nagging feeling that accompanies that option. You know you should make smart financial decisions, but the overwhelming consequences of facing reality encourage you to delay. For example, you know you should be mak-ing a list of all the credit card money you already owe before you go shopping. But in the holiday spirit, you go shopping first, and figure youll tally up the consequences later when the bills come in. In that same mindset, Congress rushes off to vacation, hoping to push the hard decisions into the New Year. And at the same time hoping we wont notice if they can announce something temporary. Its time for the bosses -- us -- to speak up and force them to do the job that were paying them to do. Heres how to make your voice heard, no mat-ter what your take on the issues happens to be: Go to www.ContactingtheCongress.org. Then just fill in your address and ZIP code to be sent to the page with your U.S. representative and two senators. Click on each name, and youll find a link to a contact form. It takes only a minute to fill out that form with your name, address and e-mail and then a category for your comment.

Then post a message to be sent directly to each of them. Mention this to as many friends as possible and encourage them to do likewise. It will take only a few minutes to contact each of your representa-tives. These insulated office holders may not listen to any one message, or they may automatically re-ply with a pre-formatted e-mail -- but if we all send a similar message, they cant ignore them and the impact will be huge! Remember, youre paying each of our sen-ators and representatives $174,000 a year -- not to mention health care and lucrative retirement ben-efits, and paid vacations! Lets make sure were getting our moneys worth from each of them. The only way to do that is to show them that we are watching, and remind them that they owe us responsible attention to their job -- just as our bosses expect and demand that of us. Youll have the final word at the ballot box -- but reminding them right now just who they are working for, whos the boss and who they are ac-countable to will definitely get their attention and stir them into action. And thats The Savage Truth.

Lenders Prefer Students Pay Ahead, Not Pay Down Dear Mary: I read your book How to Debt-Proof Your Marriage. You talked about paying down the mortgage principal with a 13th payment each year (adding one-twelfth of one payment each month to your regular payment, so that after 12 months you have added one full payment). How can I do this to my student loans? When I pay extra, its recorded as if I paid ahead, but I want to pay it down. I pay online, but I dont see any options for designating my extra payment be applied to pay down the principle. -- Anna, email

Dear Anna: Great idea, and yes, you ab-solutely can do this. All education loans, including federal and private student loans, allow for pen-alty-free prepayment. This means you can make extra payments to reduce the balance of the loan, or even pay off the entire balance early, without having to pay extra fees. However, the law also allows for lenders to apply a prepayment to future installments by advancing the next payment due date, unless otherwise specified by the borrower. The lender wants you to pay ahead, rather than pay down, and thats what your lender is doing because you have not otherwise specified. Do this: Include a note with any prepay-ments that you make, indicating that you want the prepayment applied to reduce the principal bal-ance of the loan. When you do this, watch very closely for how the lender applies the prepayment amount. You may also need to contact the lender multiple times to get them to credit your prepay-ment to the outstanding principal balance. If you need a little ammunition to make your point, mention the Higher Education Op-portunity Act of 2008, which amended the Truth in Lending Act to add section 140(e) and allows for early repayment (or prepayment (END ) of any private education loan without fees or penalties.

Dear Mary: Are there any legitimate work-at-home data-entry jobs? The companies Ive found either have bad things written about them or they want an upfront fee. -- John, via email

Dear John: There are legitimate oppor-tunities out there, but it requires a lot of diligence and persistence to find them. A growing trend for many retailers is to outsource their customer service operations to third-party companies like Al-pine Access (www.AlpineAccess.com) and Work-ing Solutions (www.WorkingSolutions.com), who then hire home-based workers to handle customer service. The reps, who typically work 20-30 hours a week, take calls for large and small companies. While the hourly rate is about $9, agents can earn up to $20 an hour with incentives and bonuses. Many companies also provide benefits like health and dental insurance and a matching 401(k) plan. Another idea is to search for companies in your area who are looking for part-time employees with your skill set. Contact them with the idea of working from home as an independent contractor. It just might be a win-win situation that benefits both of you. Good luck in your search.

Apply Common Sense to Cujo American satirist Peter De Vries once said, There are times when parenthood seems nothing more than feeding the hand that bites you. With owners of aggressive dogs, the witticism hardly elic-its a chuckle. There are many types of canine aggression: food aggression, territorial aggression, fear-based aggression, dominant aggression, protection aggres-sion, predatory aggression, punishment aggression, pain-based aggression. Pinpointing the source of a dogs aggression is instrumental to developing a safe and effective training regime. But its equally im-portant to have realistic expectations about what it means to own an aggressive dog. Take the following letter from a reader: My 5-year-old German shepherd is fine with my two roommates and me. We could take him by his back legs and drag him around the house if the mood were to strike us. I can remove bones from his mouth and put my hand in his food dish. He comes, leaves it and sits on command. If I tell him to stay, he will literally stay there for hours until I tell him to come here. I thought bringing him to college as my guard dog was a good idea, but it turns out he is too good at his job. If friends come over, one second they will be petting him, the next they will be trying to fend him off. As soon as I call him off, he leaves, but he has successfully bitten eight people, broken skin three times, attacked countless times and ripped one shirt when he lunged onto a friends chest. I dont understand what kind of aggression this is. Every-one thinks he is a beautiful dog, and he really is! I just cant believe my peaceful giant has earned the nicknames among our friends (and the guys who do work around our house) as Cujo and devil dog. Please help me! Setting Cujo loose in a room full of friends is a good way to make enemies. There are conse-quences to owning an aggressive dog -- physical, psychological and legal consequences. This is why its imperative that the owners of these dogs keep their expectations firmly grounded. If your dog has bitten once, expect that hell bite again, particularly if he has not received any training to curb the problem behavior. If your dog has shown signs of aggression

    Dr. David Lipschitz

-- growling, snarling, biting, snapping -- expect that the possibility of aggression is always there, even if he has been professionally trained. Aggression cant be cured, but it can be curbed. If your dogs aggression is triggered by specific behaviors or circumstances, expect that ag-gression to surface whenever those behaviors or cir-cumstances are in play. It was Einstein who defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Einstein, as we all know, was a very smart guy. Finally, if you know your dog to be aggres-sive, take reasonable steps to protect your friends, family and neighbors. Confine the dog when you have visitors. Dont leave food out all day if hes food aggressive. Keep him on a short leash and muzzled when walking him in the neighborhood. And if you have small children, relocate the dog to an owner who doesnt. There are things we just dont do because they are widely known to be dangerous: leave an in-fant in a car alone, leave a small child unsupervised in a swimming pool, dive head-first off a cliff into wa-ter of unknown depth. And to that I add, use common sense in dealing with an agressive dog. Woof!
