Ukrainian fasting comes toan end with the blessing of

Paschal foods

FRACKVILLE, PA - Theparish hall of St. MichaelUkrainian Catholic Churchsmelled of ham and smokedkielbasi Saturday astraditional Easter food wasset out to be blessed.

The traditional blessing ofthe foods was heldimmediately after Vespersand the Divine Liturgy of St.Basil the Great on the Vigilof the Great and HolyPascha, or Easter.

The Very Rev. ArchpriestJohn M. Fields welcomedparishioners and visitorsduring the homily using thetradit ional Ukrainiangreeting for the Easterseason: “Khrestos Voskres!Voyistinnu Voskres!” TheEaster greeting, whichmeans “Christ is Risen!Indeed He is Risen!”declares that Jesus Christhas risen from the dead.

After the Divine Liturgy,many people moved to thehall, where all types offoods were spread atoptables to be blessed. Manybaskets were covered byembroidered linens withUkrainian designs.

The foods are many thatare abstained from duringthe Great Fast, or Lent:eggs, meat, butter, richbreads and more. They are

prepared ahead of time andare traditionally eaten onHoly Pascha, therebykeeping cooking on the holyday to a minimum.

Each family lights a candle,which symbolizes theradiance of the ResurrectedChrist, prior to the prayers,incensing and blessing ofthe foods with holy water.As Fields sprinkled the holywater, family memberskissed a cross he held inhis other hand.

The foods have thefollowing meanings:

- Paska - A rich, decoratedbread, it represents Christ,as the true bread of life andthe l iv ing bread.Traditionally, the candle isplaced in the center of thebread, though many use aseparate candleholder.

- Babka - A sweet bread,usual ly with rais ins,represents Mary, themother of God (Theotokos).

- Pysanky - Decorated eggswith intricate designs andcolors represent hope andare likened to Christ, whorose from the dead, sinceeggs, which look dead,bring forth new life.

- Krashanky - Plain, dyedeggs in a variety of colors,which also symbolize life.

Traditionally, there is a redegg to represent salvationthrough the blood of Christ.

- Salt - A small amountrepresents the Christians’call to be the “salt of theearth” and their duty toothers.

- Butter - Usually in the formof a lamb, representingChrist as the lamb of Godand the paschal lamb. Thebutter also represents thegoodness of Christ.

- Cheese - Cheese, alongwith all dairy products, isrelated to the prophesiesthat told of the prosperityand peace of the Messianictimes and are symbolic ofthe special gifts given byGod.

- Horseradish - Thebitterness of horseradish isa reminder of Christ’s bittersuffering.

- Beets - The red of thebeets tel ls of Christ’sPassion and the blood heshed.

- Vinegar - A reminder ofthe gall Jesus was offeredon the cross.

- Sugar - A reminder thatChrist’s sufferings are seenin the l ight of theResurrection.

- Ham, roasted lamb,sausage, kielbasi, bacon -These rich meats arereminders of the richnessand joy of the Resurrection.They also are symbols ofGod’s overabundance andl imit less mercy andgenerosity.

It is important not to wasteany of the blessed food. Thecrumbs, bones, etc. areburied so that the earthreceives blessing from theResurrection.

As the blessing ceremonycame to a close, Fields saidthe fast is officially over.

“Now that you haveattended the Paschalservices and that yourPaschal foods are blessed,you can scurry home, takeout the knife and fork, anddig in. The fast is over.Happy Pascha,” Fields toldhis congregation.

Lenten Spiritual Journey to Christ’sPassion & Resurrection

The first gathering of thecatechetical programGenerations of Faith washeld on Sunday, April 3,2011 at AssumptionUkrainian Catholic Churchin Perth Amboy, N.J.

The day began with oneDivine Liturgy at 10:00 amsung by the Boyan Choirunder the direction of Mrs.Alla Korostil in Ukrainianand parts in English sungby the congregation.

After the Divine Liturgy, ona crisp, sunny Sundayafternoon whenparishioners could haveenjoyed many differentoutings, over 100 adultsand 28 children andteenagers gathered in theschool auditorium for thefirst presentation of theparish catechet icalprogram, Generations ofFaith.

The tables were beautifullydecorated in Lenten deeppurple with fresh pottedplants of purple and whitepansies all donated andprepared by OlgaYurechko.

Father Ivan Turykwelcomed all present thenblessed the luncheonfoods for all to share thatwere coordinated byEleanor Kataryniak andWasyl Kiczula and borschtprepared by MarikaHuna. Father Ivan invoked

a prayer to the Holy Spiritto guide and inspire allpresent.

After lunch, the twospeakers from the parish,Mrs. Helen Cheloc inEnglish and Mr. AndrewWowk in Ukrainian beganthe presentation “Lent –Commission/Omission”

In order to keep some ofthe children under 5occupied during thepresentation, Joan Zaleskihad graciously providedLenten Coloring Books andcrayons for them.

Following the presentation,three groups left thegathering to assemble intheir own groups. Thechildren, ages 4 to 7 weretaken by Sister Maria Kelly,MSMG; the second group,ages 8 to 12 was led bySister YosaphataLitvenczuk, MSMG; andthe third group, 13-17 wasled by Mr. AntonMassopust. Meanwhile;each table was assigneda facilitator, accordingly inEnglish or Ukrainian. Thefacilitator was given a setof questions that were toserve as guides fordiscussion. The discussionsabout Lent and spiritual lifesparked act ivepart ic ipat ion by al l .Following the discussion,each facilitator presenteda few observations andcomments as to the

discussion athis or herr e s p e c t i v etable. Thestudents thenreturned tothe auditoriumto presentt h e i rdiscussion with first theteenagers, followed by theintermediate group andfinal ly the youngestmembers who brought asmile to every attendee’sface with their animatedsong.

The day had beenplanned for weeks by adedicated and enthusiasticcommittee that included,Father Ivan Turyk, DeaconPaul Makar, SisterYosaphata, MSMG SisterMaria, MSMG, MariaAlvarez, GlenysBilohowski, Robert andHelen Cheloc, TomDochych, MelanieFedynyshyn, Ronald andAna Mascenik, Anton andMarcella Massopust, andJoan Zaleski.

To further promote theevangelization in thep a r i s h ,e a c hparticipantwas givena folderw i t hp r i n t e dmaterial,generously

provided by JohnBaginsky, as well as aspecial crucifix and aprayer card with theprayer of St. Ephrem.Those present were askedto recite the prayer as afamily once a week at aspecified time, continuingthe theme of spiritualgrowth of the family andof the parish family.Attendees were also askedto share the printedmaterial about the EasternChurch with their otherfamily or friends.

The first Generation ofFaith program broughttogether parishioners of allages to learn, to shareand to grow spiritually bygaining a deeperunderstanding of theLenten Journey that leadsto the GloriousResurrection of Christ, thecenter of our faith.

Holiness (Part 1)

Often, the answer of a call to religious life seems to be radically counter cultural. After all, who in this day and age would be crazy enough to give up an awesome job opportunity, to make money, to live a good life, get married, and have a family? Yet, “mysteriously” it seems, there are those who give all of this up, leaving everything behind to spend a lifetime in prayer, fasting, and doing good works, either in solitude or living in community. Monastic life, for both men and women, is something that is in itself a mystery. It is mysterious primarily because it is a special calling from God to an individual soul to abandon their former way of life and become more perfectly united to God by offering up their lives as a prayer. Prayer is what defines and shapes the monk or nun in everything that they do, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This is the common thread of religious life, no matter if the monk is a contemplative who shuns the world to fast, pray, and be more closely united with God, or the active sister who spends her time engaged in works of charity. They all offer their lives up in service and in prayer, so that not only they may achieve sanctification and holiness, but also that the world may achieve sanctification and holiness through the examples they set for us in the world.

On Sunday, May 1, more than 100 parishionersof Annunciation of the BVM Church in MelrosePark were welcomed to the church hall by theirpastor, the Rev. Ihor Royik, for the annual“Sviachene”. Children of the parish performed amusical program, and the raffle of a beautifultorte donated for the occasion raised nearly$200 in addition to the proceeds from the event,all of which will go toward church needs.

Eastern Catholic Bishops meet in St. Louis

The bishops of theEastern Catholic Churchesin the U.S.A. met at theMaronite Pastoral Centerin St. Louis, MO, April 13and 14. They met as theEastern Cathol icAssociates, anorganization formed 40years ago, and as therelatively recent Region XVof the U.S. Conference ofCatholic Bishops.

Two new members,Bishop Yousif Habash ofthe Syriac Eparchy andBishop Eusebius of theS y r o - M a l a n k a r aExarchate, were formallywelcomed. Father PeterKochera representedBishop Eusebius who wasunable to attend becauseof his ad limina visit to theHoly Father. Father EugeneYackanich represented theArcheparchy of Pittsburgh,of which he is theadministrator sedevacante.

In addit ion toopportunities to praytogether, to share concernsand to strengthen fraternalbonds, a number of issueswere addressed.

New by-laws for theE.C.A. were approved,adjusting terminology toconform to that of theCode of Canons of theEastern Churches andconforming tomodifications in practicethat were introduced sincethe first by-laws werecreated. Among these,

terms of off ice wereextended from one yearto 3 years.

The following wereelected to office: President,Bishop John Kudrick; Vice-president, ArchbishopStefan Soroka; Secretary,Bishop John MichaelBotean; and Treasurer,Bishop Robert Shaheen.

Encounter 2012approved

Father Gregory Noga,Dr. Barbara Lutz andBishop Nicholas Samrareported on the progressof the Eastern CatholicEparchial Directors ofReligious Education andGod With Us Publications.They also reported on theplanning and preparationfor Encounter 2012, ofwhich they were givenresponsibility.

The final version of astatement of the EasternCathol ic bishops onstewardship wasapproved for distribution.

Vocations Fair 2012approved

A presentation on theEastern Catholic VocationsFair was given byArchbishop Soroka. Thisprogram of prayerservices, exhibits andconversation is scheduledfor the weekend of theMarch for Li fe inWashington, DC. Vocationdirectors of many of theeparchies and religious

communit ies wi l lparticipate.

Short discussionscovered various topics,including grants from theHome Mission Collection;outreaches to EasternCatholics from CatholicUniversity of America,Walsh University and SS.Cyri l & MethodiusSeminary; an update onthe Charter for theProtection of Children andYoung People; ways toassist Eastern Catholics inthe Middle East, especiallyby supporting the CatholicArabic TV stat ionTelemuiere/Noursat; andthe 2012 internationalSynod of Bishops on theNew Evangelization.

As Region XV of theU.S.C.C.B., the bishopsheard a report from Mr.James Dubois, one of theRegion’s 2 representativeson the conference’sNational Advisory Council.

He and Ms. HelenKennedy have served asthe Region XV’s f irstrepresentatives. They willend their well-served andwell-appreciated term ofoffice this year.

The bishops electedBishop John Kudrick aschairman of the Region.Various bishops wererecognized for theirpart ic ipat ion on thevarious conferencecommittees.

Preparations werebegun for the f irstcorporate visit ad liminaof the Eastern Catholicbishops to the Holy See in2012. Previously, thebishops each joined theirneighboring Latin Churchcounterparts.

The Ukrainian community of the Greater Philadelphia area,in solidarity with and support from the local Japanesecommunity, commemorated the 25th anniversary of theChornobyl nuclear catastrophe on Tuesday, April 26, 2011at 7:00 pm at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of theImmaculate Conception located at 830 North Franklin Street,Philadelphia PA 19123.

All proceeds raised during the commemorative concert thatfeatured Ukrainian choirs and a performance by theJapanese-American community were designated for victimsof the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The evening began with awreath-laying ceremonyfollowed by the lighting of amemorial candle for the victimsof the nuclear tragedies.

Welcoming remarks weredelivered by Metropolitan-Archbishop Stefan Sorokafollowed by a prayer servicefor the souls of the victims ofthe nuclear tragedies inUkraine and in Japan.

Among the speakers of the evening included Tomoko Torii,Executive Director and President of the “Harmony for PeaceFoundation.” Tomoko Torii spoke about the tragic bondthat is shared between Japan and Ukraine, she said, “Nopeople in the world have suffered the effects of nucleardisaster and radioactive contamination more directly andwith greater consequence.” She also expressed her sincerethanks to everyone attending and performing that eveningfor their compassionate decision to donate the proceedsfrom this anniversary gathering to aid the victims of Japan.She said, “Having the generous support of everyone heretonight, you who 25 years later still hold the horror of 1986close to your hearts touches us deeply.”

Other speakers of the evening included Ulana Mazurkevych,Mariya Vengrenyuk, Andriy Mikitov, and Kostyantyn Vorona.

25th Anniversaryof Chornobyl

Twenty-five years ago atragic nuclear accidentoccurred in Chornobyl,Ukraine. Unit 4 of theChornobyl powergenerat ing complexexploded at 1:23 am onApril 26th, 1986. Disbeliefguided the actions ofAlexander Akimov, apanicked nuclear engineerwho saw the reactor goout of control. He tried tolower the control rods intothe reactor, but theyjammed. He sent twocolleagues to lower therods by hand. Theyreturned, faces turningbrown from lethal dosesof radiat ion. Theyreported that there wereno control rods. And therewas no reactor. Mr.Akimov did not believethem. For hours, he andhis bosses told Moscowthat the reactor was intact.From the moment of theworld’s worst nuclearaccident, denial andmisinformation were therule. The people ofUkraine and thesurrounding nations werenot given warning so thatthey could take

preventat ive act ions.Many people died. Manysurvivors developed canceror have weakened immunesystems.

Twenty-five years later, thepeople of north easternJapan suffer a worsecatastrophe. A nuclearpower plant suffered majordamage fol lowing asevere earthquake and apowerful tsunami. Bestefforts to contain theleakage of radiation havebeen minimally successfulso far. The Japanesepeople and the people ofneighboring nations havealso suffered from a lackof information being givento them. It is feared thatthe health of manyJapanese people mayhave been seriouslyaffected by the radiationexposure in the air andwater. Many have diedfrom the earthquake andthe subsequent tsunami.

Today, the UkrainianAmerican and theJapanese Americancommunit ies gathertogether in this holy shrineto commemorate thesehorrific tragedies. Myheartfel t welcome torepresentatives of bothcommunities gatheredhere today. Our

respective communitiesattempt to generously helpour brothers and sisters inour native lands in timesof tragedy. This is BrightWeek, the week of EasterSunday, when wecelebrate the resurrectionof our Lord and Savior,Jesus Christ. It is a veryspecial t ime to offerprayers for the souls of thedeparted. You will noticein front of you the royaldoors of the iconostas arewide open. Normally,they are closed exceptduring the Liturgies. All of

this week, these royaldoors remain opensignifying that the gates ofheaven are wide open.Souls of those who die thisweek immediately enter theheavenly kingdom. Ibelieve that our prayersoffered today for the soulsof the departed of thenuclear accidents inUkraine and in Japan willalso be immediatelyreceived by our loving andmerciful Lord Jesus Christ.

The Right ReverendMonsignor MichaelFedorowich, fell asleep inthe Lord, Bright Mondayafternoon, April 25, 2011.He served God and thefaithful of the UkrainianCatholic Church as a priestincardinated in theUkrainian Cathol icArcheparchy ofPhiladelphia for over 50years, until his retirementfrom the active ministry aspastor of Transfigurationof Our Lord Church inShamokin due to ill healthin 2006. For the past twoyears, he had been aresident of Maria JosephManor, Danville, Pa.

Monsignor Fedorowich,one of seven children, wasborn to the late Michaeland Anastasia WolosFedorowich in MahanoyPlane, PA on January 19,1930.

He attended St. BasilPreparatory School inStamford CT, where hegraduated as classvaledictorian in 1947.

He then enrolled in St.Basil’s College Seminary,Stamford, CT, and earneda Bachelor of Arts Degreewith a major in Philosophyin 1951.

The newly-ordained FatherMichael celebrated hisDivine Li turgy ofThanksgiving in his homeparish, St. John the BaptistUkrainian Catholic Church,Maizeville, PA.

He served as assistantpastor of the followingparishes: Ss. Peter andPaul, Ansonia, CT; St.Michael the Archangel,Hartford, CT; St. Nicholas,Philadelphia, PA.

He served as pastor of St.Piux X Church, Houston,TX, where he was founding

pastor; Protectionof the BVMChurch, Bristol,PA; Assumptionof the BVMChurch, PerthAmboy, NJ;Annunciation ofthe BVM Church,Melrose Park,PA; St. Josaphat Church,Parma, OH, where heprovided the leadershipfor the construction of thecathedral of the ParmaEparchy of St. Josaphat;and Transfiguration of OurLord Church, Shamokin,PA.

From 1962 to 1974 andfrom 1983 to 1993, heserved as rector of theImmaculate ConceptionCathedral in Philadelphiaand during his tenure asrector the new cathedralwas constructed in the1960’s.

Because of hisadministrative talents andorganizational skills, Msgr.Fedorowich also served theArcheparchy ofPhiladelphia as vicargeneral, a member of thecollege of consultors andmember of thea r c h i e p a r c h i a lcorporation; director of

the Office of ReligiousEducation; member of theboard of the CatholicApostolate; editor of TheWay; member of theTribunal; member of theseminary advisory board.

He also served asProtopresbyter of theSouth Anthracite Deaneryand Spiritual Director ofthe South AnthraciteDeanery Holy NameSociety.

On May 31, 1968, PopePaul VI elevated him tothe rank of papalchamberlain with the titleof Very ReverendMonsignor. He receivedanother papalecclesiastical honor whenPope John Paul II elevatedhim to the rank of domesticprelate with the title of RightReverend.

The hired hand is not the shepherd anddoes not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, heabandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flockand scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand andcares nothing for the sheep. “I am the good shepherd; I know mysheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and Iknow the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. I have othersheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They toowill listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd”.(Jn. 10, 9-16)

These brothers,natives of Thessalonika,are venerated as theapostles of the SouthernSlavs and the fathers ofSlavonic literary culture.Cyril, the younger of them,was baptized Constantineand assumed the name bywhich he is usually knownonly shortly before his

death, when he receivedthe habit of a monk. Atan early age he was sentto Constantinople, wherehe studied at the imperialuniversity under Leo theGrammarian and Photius.Here he learned all theprofane sciences but notheology; however he wasordained deacon (priest

probably not til later) andin due course took overthe chair of Photius,gaining for himself a greatreputation, evidenced bythe epithet “thePhilosopher”. For a timehe retired to a religioushouse, but in 861 he wassent by the emperor,Michael III, on a religio-

political mission to the rulerof the judaized Khazarsbetween the Dnieper andthe Volga. This he carriedout with success, thoughthe number of converts hemade to Christ ianityamong the Khazars hasdoubtless been much

exaggerated. The elderbrother, Methodius, who,after being governor ofone of the Slav colonies inthe Opsikion province, hadbecome a monk, took partin the mission to theKhazars, and on his returnto Greece was electedabbot of an importantmonastery.

In 862 there arrivedin Constantinople anambassador charged byRost is lav, prince ofMoravia, to ask that theemperor would send himmissionaries capable ofteaching his people in theirown language. Behind thisrequest was the desire ofRostislav to draw nearerto Byzantium as aninsurance against thepowerful Germanneighbours on his west,and this was a goodopportunity for the Easternemperor tocounterbalance theinfluence of the Westernemperor in those parts,where Germanmissionaries were alreadyactive. It favoured too theecclesiastical politics ofPhotius, now patriarch ofConstant inople, whodecided that Cyril andMethodius were mostsuitable for the work: forthey were learned men,who knew Slavonic, andthe first requirement wasthe provision of charactersin which the Slav tongue

might be written. Thecharacters now called“cyrillic”, from which arederived the presentRussian, Serbian andBulgarian letters, wereinvented from the Greekcapitals, perhaps by thefollowers of St. Cyril; the“glagolit ic” alphabet,formerly wrongly attributedto St. Jerome, in which theSlav-Roman li turgicalbooks of certain YugoslavCatholics are printed, maythat prepared for thisoccasion by Cyril himself,or, according to thelegend, directly revealedby God.

In 862 the twobrothers set out with anumber of assistants andcame to the court ofRostislav; they were wellreceived and at once gotto work. But the positionwas very difficult. The newmissionaries made free useof the vernacular in theirpreaching andministrations, and thismade immediate appealto the local people. To theGerman clergy this wasobjectionable, and theiroopposit ion wasstrengthened when theEmperor Louis the Germanforced Rostislav to take anoath of fealty to him. TheByzantine missionaries,armed with their pericopesfrom the Scriptures andliturgical hymns in Slavonic,pursued their way with

much success, but weresoon handicapped by theirlack of a bishop to ordainmore priests. The Germanprelate, the bishop ofPassau, would not do it,and Cyri l thereforedetermined to seek helpelsewhere, presumablyfrom Constant inoplewhence he came.

On their way thebrothers arrived in Venice.It was at a bad moment.Photius at Constantinoplehad incurredexcommunication; the Eastwas under suspicion; theproteges of the Easternemperor and their liturgicaluse of a new tongue werevehemently criticized. Onesource says that the pope,St. Nicholas I, sent for thestrangers. In any case toRome they came, bringingwith them the alleged relicsof Pope St. Clement, whichSt. Cyril had recoveredwhen in the Crimea on hisway back from theKhazars. Pope Nicholas inthe meantime had died,but his successor, AdrianII, warmly welcomed thebearers of so great a gift.He examined their cause,and he gave judgement:Cyril and Methodius wereto receive episcopalconsecrat ion, theirneophytes were to beordained, the use of theliturgy in Slavonic wasapproved.

Although in the

office of the Westernchurch both brothers arereferred to as bishops, itis far from certain that Cyrilwas in fact consecrated.For while still in Rome hedied, on February 14,869. The “Italian legend”of the saints says that onCyril’s death Methodiuswent to Pope Adrian andtold him, “When we leftour father’s house for thecountry in which, withGod’s help, we havelaboured, the last wish ofour mother was that,should either of us die, theother would bring back thebody for decent burial inour monastery. I ask thehelp of your Holiness forme to do this.” The popewas willing; but it wasrepresented to him that “Itis not fitting that we shouldallow the body of sodistinguished a man to betaken away, one who hasenriched our church andcity with relics, who byGod’s power has attracteddistant nations towards us,who has been called tohis reward from this place.So famous a man shouldbe buried in a famousplace in so famous a city.”And so it was done. St.Cyril was buried with greatpomp in the church of SanClemente on the Coelian,wherein the relics of St.Clement had beenenshrined.(Continued on next page)

St. Methodius nowtook up his brother’sleadership. Having beenconsecrated, he returned,bearing a letter from theHoly See recommendinghim as a man of “exactunderstanding andorthodoxy”. Kosel, princeof Pannonia, having askedthat the ancientarchdiocese of Sirmium(now Mitrovi tsa) berevived, Methodius wasmade metropolitan andthe boundaries of hischarge extended to theborders of Bulgaria. Butthe papal approval anddecided actions did notintimidate the Westernclergy there, and thesituation in Moravia hadnow changed. Rostislav’snephew, Svatopluk, hadall ied himself withCarloman of Bavaria anddriven his uncle out. In 870Methodius found himselfhaled before a synod ofGerman bishops andinterned in a leaking cell.Only after two years couldthe pope, now John VIII,get him released; and thenJohn judged it prudent towithdraw the permission touse Slavonic (“a barbarouslanguage”, he called it),except for the purpose ofpreaching. At the sametime he reminded theGermans that Pannoniaand the disposition of seesthroughout I l lyr icum

belonged of old to theHoly See.

During thefol lowing years St .Methodius continued hiswork of evangelization inMoravia, but he made anenemy of Svatopluk, whomhe rebuked for thewickedness of his life.Accordingly in 878 thearchbishop was delated tothe Holy See both forcontinuing to conductdivine worship in Slavonicand for heresy, in that heomitted the words “and theSon” from the creed (atthat time these words hadnot been introducedeverywhere in the West,and not in Rome). JohnVIII summoned him toRome. Methodius was ableto convince the pope bothof his orthodoxy and ofthe desirability of theSlavonic liturgy, and Johnagain conceded it, withcertain reservations, forGod, “who made thethree principal languages,Hebrew, Greek and Latin,made others also for hishonour and glory”.Unfortunately, inaccordance with the wishesof Svatopluk, the pope alsonominated to the see ofNitra, which as suffraganto Sirmium, a Germanpriest called Wiching, animplacable opponent ofMethodius. Thisunscrupulous prelate

continued to persecute hismetropolitan, even to theextent of forging pontificaldocuments. After his death,Wiching obtained thearchepiscopal see,banished the chief disciplesof his predecessor, andundid much of his work inMoravia.

During the last fouryears of his life, accordingto the “Pannonian legend”,St. Methodius completedthe Slavonic translation ofthe Bible (except the booksof Machabees) and alsoof the Nomokanon, acompilation of Byzantineecclesiastical and civil law.This suggests thatcircumstances werepreventing him fromdevoting all his time tomissionary and episcopalconcerns; in other words,he was fighting a losingbattle with the Germaninf luence. He died,probably at Stare Mesto(Velehrad), worn out by hisapostolic labours and theopposition of those whothought them misdirected,on April 6, 884. His funeralservice was carried out inGreek, Slavonic and Latin:“The people, carryingtapers, came together inhuge numbers; men andwomen, big and little, richand poor, free men andslaves, widows andorphans, natives andforeigners, sick and well -

al l were there. ForMethodiuis had been allthings to all men that hemight lead them all toHeaven.”

The feast of SS.Cyril and Methodius,always observed in theland of their mission, wasextended to the wholeWestern church in 1880by Pope Leo XIII. Asorientals who worked inclose co-operation withRome they are regardedas particularly suitablepatrons of church unityand of works to further thereunion of the dissidentSlav churches; they arevenerated alike by CatholicCzechs and Slovaks andCroats and OrthodoxSerbs and Bulgars.According to Slavonicusage they are named inthe preparation of theByzantine Mass.

Pope John Paul II was atrue bel iever, acourageous voice of truthand a man whose witnessto the faith grew moreeloquent as his ability tospeak declined, PopeBenedict XVI and otherswho worked closely withthe late pope said atevents for his beatification.

”John Paul II is blessedbecause of his faith - astrong, generous andapostolic faith,” PopeBenedict said May 1 justminutes after formallybeatifying his predecessor.

In the beati f icat ionproclamation, PopeBenedict said that after aconsultation with manybishops and faithful anda study by theCongregation for Saints’Causes, he had decidedthat “the venerable servantof God, John Paul II,pope, henceforth will becalled blessed” and hisfeast will be Oct. 22, theanniversary of theinaugurat ion of hisponti f icate in 1978.

Rome. The next morning60,000 people gatheredin St. Peter’s Square for aMass in thanksgiving forthe beati f icat ion.

The official celebrationsbegan with a nighttimeprayer vigil April 30 at theCircus Maximus, the siteof ancient Romanracetrack. .

The vigil crowd - estimatedat about 200,000 people- cheered French SisterMarie Simon-Pierre, whosecure from Parkinson’sdisease was accepted asthe miracle that paved theway for Pope John Paul’sbeatification. The nunbeamed as she recountedher unexpected healing.

She said when she wasdiagnosed withParkinson’s in 2001 at theage of 40, she found itdifficult to watch PopeJohn Paul, who sufferedfrom the same disease. “Isaw in him the image ofmy illness. But I admiredhis strength and courage,”she said. .

Two months after the popedied, her condit ionworsened. Then, afterprayers to the late pope,she awoke early onemorning feeling well rested.

”I fel ts ome t h i nghad changedin me, and Iwas healed,”she said. Thecrowd in theC i r c u sMaximus erupted inapplause. .

Many others in the crowdsfor the events also hadpersonal stories aboutPope John Paul. Likewise,Pope Benedict ended hishomily at the beatificationMass sharing his ownpersonal story.

”I would like to thank Godfor the gift of havingworked for many yearswith Blessed Pope JohnPaul I I ,” he said.

As prefect of theCongregation for theDoctrine of the Faith from1982 until his election in2005, Pope Benedict saidhe worked at the pope’sside “and came to reverehim.” .

”His example of prayercontinually impressed andedified me: he remaineddeeply united to God evenamid the many demandsof his ministry,” the popesaid. .

Pope Benedict said that

even at the moment of hisdeath people “perceivedthe fragrance of his sanctityand in any number of waysGod’s people showed theirveneration for him. For thisreason, with all due respectfor the Church’s canonicalnorms, I wanted his causeof beatification to moveforward with reasonablehaste.” .

After the Mass, PopeBenedict went into St.Peter’s Basilica and kneltin prayer for four minutesbefore Blessed John Paul’scasket, which was set infront of the main altar.After the pope left, theconcelebrating cardinalsfiled up to the woodencasket, touching it lightlyand kiss ing i t .

Later, the Vatican openedthe basilica to the generalpublic and kept it openuntil 3 a.m. Vatican policesaid 250,000 people filedpast the casket or knelt inprayer near it in those first13 hours. The basilica was

Presiding at the Mass ofthanksgiving May 2,Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone,Vatican secretary of state,thanked God for “havinggiven us a pope able togive the Catholic Churchnot only a universal reachand a moral authority ona global level like neverbefore,” but also one whohelped Catholics be “morespiritual, more biblical andmore centered on theword of God.”

”Finally, we thank the Lordfor having given us a saintlike him,” Cardinal Bertonesaid. .

Polish Cardinal StanislawDziwisz of Krakow, whowas Pope John Paul’spersonal secretary fornearly 40 years, spoke atthe beginning of thethanksgiving Mass, notingthat the late pope wasdeclared blessed in thesame square wherealmost 30 years ago aTurkish gunman tried toassassinate him.

”We can never forget that30 years ago, in this verysquare, he gave his bloodfor the cause of Christ,”

Cardinal Dziwisz said.

The assassination attempttook place May 13, 1981,while the pope was ridingthrough the square duringhis weekly generalaudience. .

During the beatificationMass May 1, a silverreliquary containing a vialof Blessed John Paul’sblood was carried up tothe altar by Polish SisterTobiana Sobodka, whoran Pope John Paul’shousehold, and by SisterMarie Simon-Pierre, whowas cured of Parkinson’sdisease. .

The reliquary, a sculptureof olive branches, also wascarried in procession tothe altar at the thanksgivingMass. .

While the biggest groupsof pi lgr ims at thebeatification events camefrom Italy and Poland,more than 80 countriessent official delegationsand most of them had atleast a few pilgrims presentas well...

Remembering the Pope’s Visit to the Cathedral

Pope John Paul II visited the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia,PA on October 4, 1979. This historic visit continues to be a cherished memory of the clergy, religious andfaithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia.

On that historic day in 1979, theCathedral was decorated withgold and white mums, a kingly-red carpet and was adorned withpapal banners. When the HolyFather greeted all present with“Slava Isusu Kristu” in Ukrainian,applause rose from theworshippers bringing a warm smileto the Pontiff’s face. The Popeunderscored the importance of theUkrainian Church in the UniversalCatholic Church. In a matter offorty minutes the Pope had comeand gone. He spoke to thousandsgathered at the Cathedral buttouched the hearts of millions ofUkrainians with an embrace thatwill never be forgotten.

PASTORAL LETTER OF HIS BEATITUDE SVIATOSLAV

Dear brothers in Christ’spriesthood!

On Holy Thursday, whenour Savior gathered Hisdisciples at the Last Supper,before His Passion, I too,wish to gather all of youaround me by means of thispastoral letter.

At the Mystical Supper withHis apostles, Jesus Christestablished the Mystery ofthe Holy Priesthood. He hasalso chosen and called allof us, to also participate inthis great mystery; and hasmade this service thepurpose of our lives and ourearthly mission. On thisfestive day, I sincerely wishto greet all of you who havebecome participants of theeternal Priesthood of ourSavior Himself ; andtogether with you, to reflectupon its content, and theresponsibilities we mustfulfill within our Church andamong our people.

Look upon Christ today,who once again joins usand presides at His MysticalSupper. How shall we see

him? What does He say tous and what is He doingfor us? Of all the mysticalactions of Christ takingplace at this Supper, Iwould like to draw to yourattention only the followingthree: the washing ofdisciples’ feet, the gift of HisBody and Blood under theappearance of bread andwine to be received and tobe eaten, and the Prayerto the Father for all of us.

The first action or gesture,which is reenacted in ourcathedral churches with therite of foot-washing on HolyThursday itself, Christ in avisible and moving way,humbles Himself before Hisdisciples and shows them,that He is among them asa servant. Explaining Hisaction to His disciples, whoare surprised and takenaback, the Saviour says tothem: “Do you know what Ihave done for you? You callme Teacher and Lord; andyou are right, for so I am.If I then, your Lord andTeacher, have washedyour feet, you also ought

to wash one another’s feet”(John 13:12-14).

Thus the Savior teaches usthat His Priesthood is not apremise for humandominion, power, orprivilege. To be a priest -means to be a servant forall, to daily wash and purifyhumans made unclean, toserve ones neighbor by theexample given by the Lord.“A servant is not greaterthan his master; now is hewho is sent greater than hewho sent him,” – says Christ(John 13:16). To be a priest– means to a servant ofcleansing for humanbeings, so that everyperson might be able toparticipate in the pure lifeof Christ Himself.

How important it is for allof us, especially in thesedays of the Great Fastwhen for hours we hear theconfessions of the faithful,to be ourselves cleansedand washed by Christ is this“bath” of the soul, whichwe refer to as the Mysteryof Holy Repentance! Andso, let us turn to this mysteryof God’s mercy often; allowChrist to serve us; andpermit Him to make uscapable in the service ofothers. “If I do not washyou” - says Christ to Peterand also to each of us -“You have no part in Me”(John 13:8).

The second important pointin our reflection and theculmination of Christ ’sMystical Supper is theinstitution of the mystery of

the Most Holy Eucharist.Opening up to His disciplesthe possibility of receivingin communion His Body andBlood prior to His owndeath on the cross, JesusChrist makes themmembers of His own Bodyand His Blood: He entersinto their lives and makesthem His Church, which isHis Body (see 1 Cor 12:27).Receiving the EucharisticGif ts , the apost lesthemselves are received byChrist ! By taking, theythemselves are taken. Bypartaking of His Body andBlood in Holy Communion,they partake in His Life,enabling them to enter intoHis death and resurrection,to drink of His chalice –and in this way, to betransformed to becomeparticipants in His eternalPriesthood, according tothe order of Melchizedek(Ps 109:4). In the letter tothe Hebrews, we f indsignificant emphasis on thisunity between the new andeternal Priesthood of Christand the eternal NewCovenant which has beensealed by His Blood.Having been permeated bythe Body and Blood ofChrist, the apostles at theMystical Supper becameparticipants not of a humanpriesthood, but of a DivinePriesthood – a Priesthoodof the Divine Person ofJesus Christ. Jesus Christ isthe eternal High Priest,according to the order of

Melchizedek; through Himwe have access to theperfect salvat ion andcommunion with God (Heb7:11-28).

The Holy Mysteries of theEucharis t and thePriesthood were institutedon the same day, by onedivine action of Christ. Andso, we can say that thepriestly life is a Eucharisticlife. The priest of Christserves the Divine Liturgyevery day, in order to leadhis faithful into communionwith the Body and Blood ofthe Lord, by means of hispastoral service and careof souls, and by theproclamation of God’sWord. I t is from theEucharist that the priestdraws his strength and zeal;in the Eucharist he renewshis consecration to Godand discovers his ownidentity. Being essentiallyEucharistic, the life of priestis an offering for the Peopleof God: a sacrifice for thepeople and a way to God.Only by living such a life,can a pastor of souls cometo know God ever moredeeply; be immersed intothe understanding of theWord of His Divine Gospel;and proclaim the Word toHis People in the power ofthe Holy Spirit.

The third important actionof Chris t , who dinestogether with us at HisMystical Supper, is Hisprayer. Together with Hisdisciples, Jesus sings praisesto the Father and offers Hispriestly prayer for them

(John 17). Christ prays tothe Father not only in thepresence of His disciples:He prays for them and inthem, from the depths oftheir very being. This unitybetween the prayer ofChrist and the apostles ismade complete by thepower and action of theHoly Spirit through theMystery of the Priesthood,just as Christ is united inthe Mystery of the Eucharistto His Church as its Head.That is why St. Augustineteaches: “When we turn toGod in prayer, we shouldnot detach from Him HisSon; and when the Bodyof the Son prays, then it isnot detached from i tsHead. In this way, the samePerson, the only Saviour ofthe Body, our Lord JesusChrist, the Son of God, isthe One Who prays in us,for us, and is the One towhom we pray” (St .Augustine, commentary onPsalm 85).

The prayerful service of thepriest in Christ’s Churchflows from this perspectiveand understanding ofChris t ’s Service. Dai lyprayer from the DivinePraises – our prayer rule –is one of the essentialresponsibilities of our lifeand an inseparable part ofour priestly vocation. Whena priest daily prays Matins,the Hours, Vespers andother parts of the liturgicalrule of the day, then evenif he is alone, he praysalways in the Church, withthe Church and for theChurch! How important it is

for every parish and forevery monastic communityto have such men andwomen of prayer, so thatby power of the Holy Spiritand by the intercession ofChrist Himself – the HighPriest, our Church may lifein the fullness of the DivineLife!

Gazing upon our Saviortoday, at His Myst icalSupper, we see that in allHis features, His words andactions the important, yetvei led truth about Hispriestly service: Christ’spr iest is he, whogenerously gives of himself.In imitation of Christ, thepriest gives to the peoplenot only what he has: time,knowledge, strength andgifts (either personal or ofhis family). He also giveshimself completely to hispeople as a servant; thatby the power of the HolySpirit in the Mystery of thePriesthood, he may bringevery human being toChrist, and through Him, tounity with the Father - theSource of eternal life.

On this most solemn day, Iextend my sincerestgratitude to all my brothersin Christ’s Priesthood, whowith zeal and with sacrifice,serve God and HisChurch. All the good thingshappening in our Churchtoday, are taking place,thanks to God’s grace andyour untiring service.

With deep respect, I bowmy head before hundredsof priestly families, whohave given of their own

means, and have sacrificedtemporal conveniences;and today they are inplaces that are most difficultand where we (as a Church)are most needed. Thankyou, for sharing with ourfaithful without complainingthe def ic iencies andhardships of current socio-economic circumstances,and for bringing to them theWord of God and theexample of true Christianmarriage. Your witness andyour sacrifice is a most-precious treasure, uponwhich our Churchcontinues to grow anddevelop.

I sincerely pray for thosepriests who today feel lost,disillusioned, wounded, orwho suffer from trials andtemptations. May the Lordthis day strengthen you andyour families; may He batheyou in His Divine Love andheal your wounds with HisBody and Blood; may Hespeak from your inmostbeing the Word of eternallife! Drinking to the bottomthe chalice of the Lord’ssuffering servant, let uscourageously follow Him toHis glor ious third-dayresurrection!
