End of steel on the new line for the C.P.R., nearAmulet, Saskatchewan. By 1867, the Grand Trunk Railway linked Ontarioand Quebec from Sarnia to Rivière-du-Loup. Underterms of the British North America Act of 1867,Canada agreed to build the Intercolonial Railwayfrom the St. Lawrence River to Halifax. Surveyingof this route had begun in 1863 under SandfordFleming, who completed the survey acrossNew Brunswick in 1868. Construction began thesame year and ended in 1876.British Columbia joined Canada in 1871, and thegovernment in Ottawa agreed to build a railway tothe West Coast within 10 years. Sandford Flemingwas Engineer-in-Chief for this Canadian PacificRailway until retiring in 1881, succeeded byCollingwood Schreiber. On November 7, 1885, the lastspike was driv en near Revelstoke, British Columbia. Sir Sandford Fleming and Sir Collingwood Schreiberreceived titles for their con tributions to Canada’snationhood. Many notable surveyors locatedroutes and lines for the railways during theseyears. Photographs of the surveyors themselvesare rare; we are left mainly with photographs ofthe construction of the rail lines to appreciate themagnitude of these surveyors’ accomplishments.
