As we embrace Passover this year, we follow a basic set of rituals that never change – we clean, we cook, we pray, we talk and we eat. Of course there is never quite enough time to do all of this preparatory work and active engagement as we would like, but in a funny way, perhaps that helps us to better authenticate and experience the haste that our ancestors experienced when leaving Egypt.

As we know, they were rushed. Their bread did not even have enough time to rise. So all the more so in our generation, when we continually com-plain about the lack of time to get things done, perhaps we should take a moment to truly reflect on the story of the Exodus from Egypt and better understand the difference between an imposed slavery at the hands of oppressors verses a self-imposed slavery that we create for ourselves.

As Americans, we live in a world that is free; however, even as a free people, we continually fall victim to oppression that holds us back from achieving our maximum potential. In the haggadah entitled A Night to Remember, author Michael Walzer writes (from Exodus and Revolution), “We still believe, or many of us do, what the Exodus first taught: First, that wherever you live, it is prob-ably Egypt; Second, that there is a better place, a world more attractive, a prom-ised land and Third, that ‘the way to the land is through the wilderness.’”

Walzer makes a powerful psycho-logical point while simultaneously chal-

lenging us to learn from the power of memory and ex-perience. On seder nights, we retell the story of our ancestors’ societal journey from slavery to freedom. In modern times and living in a

free society, we must reflect upon our continuous personal journey from slav-ery to freedom – a cognitive process of self-examination and evolution which hopefully results in self-improvement and a greater sense of psychological freedom.

Societal oppression continues to-day. As Walzer suggests, the “Egypt” of our haggadah still exists and can be seen in the streets of Syria and Iran, in the terrorist attacks in France, or even in the local arena in the case of Trayvon Martin – people oppress other people and commit crimes that leave the greater society outraged and searching for justice. On a personal level, our crimes are not as violent or sensational as those reported by the national or international media; our crimes are often that we are over-scheduled and don’t put the necessary time into the things that matter most, we are rushed in taking care of the needs of so many that we often ignore our own personal needs, and we forget to be thankful and appreciative for the abounding goodness in our lives and over-emphasize the inevitable faults and shortcomings that make up our reality.

As a result, we feel oppressed amidst our freedom, and we find our-

selves craving a better life – one that is free from the constraints of time and deadlines, one that is liberated from re-sponsibilities to those who depend on us the most, and one that is boundless in goodness and bereft of negativity.

Rest assured that world exists. But to get there, we have to travel along some unfamiliar roads with only our faith in G-d and belief in that the future will be better than the present. Our ancestors committed to that vision when they left Egypt. Despite un-certainty and what were undoubtedly overwhelming obstacles, they perse-vered and prevailed. Our celebrations of Passover today might look very different had the Exodus not been a process of deep dedication and devo-tion to something much greater than ourselves.

And today, with a similar dedica-tion and devotion, our lives can im-prove, and we can feel a greater sense

of freedom from whatever binds us and holds us back in our personal lives. Our result will be a greater sense of personal happiness that will be reflective in everything that we do. And without a doubt, our new sense of freedom will have a positive impact on our families, colleagues and friends. The aforementioned quote from Michael Walzer concludes, “There is no way to get from here to there except by joining together and marching.” Our ancestors’ journey is testimony to this fact; however, they couldn’t have joined together without first having been inspired to change as individuals.

Chag Sameach v’Kasher – May we all have meaningful and transfor-mative experiences this Passover as we continually recall our journey from slavery to freedom.

Message from the President

Well, when I’m wrong I admit it, and in my last article I pre-dicted that Rabbi Zimbalist would show up for Purim dressed as Arnold Schwarzenegger. Much to my surprise, he walked into the shul as the dreaded HAY-MAN, a pyromaniac’s dream come true! Of course, Rabbi Zimbalist did a great job of reading the Magillah through all the straw, but the highlights of erev Purim were the ice cream social for the children (who were partially trampled by the adults!) and of course THE PURIM SHPIEL.

This year’s Shpiel was the all time masterpiece, a mad-cap historical romp to the Sounds of Tzuris (music), brilliantly written and performed by our own “Meshugganah Players”. It was hysterics from beginning to end! The Purim carnival was another great event for the entire family, hosted by our re-ligious and nursery schools. The kids went fishing, had their faces painted, played all sorts of games and of course enjoyed snacks and Pizza!. Anyone who was there knows that Rabbi Zimbalist must have been a pickle salesman in his past life! He just loves standing in front of those barrels selling pickles! Thank you Jackie Iaria, Cantor Freedman and your crew of dedicated volunteers for these events.

I want to highlight the many events and Simchas held in March. First, a huge Mazel Tov to Hunter Churgin, Alex Mintz, Shane Sosinsky, Rachel Leifer and their families on becoming Bar and Bat Mitzvah. It is an immense pleasure and honor for me to partici-pate in these occasions.

Our Casino night packed the social hall, and we had so many people that we needed more gam-ing tables! I heard that even a few of our members became millionaires that night! Dr. Alan Plumer’s

lectures on the Dead Sea Scrolls on Monday nights have been a stand-out and have gotten rave reviews as well as the Sisterhood/Mens Club breakfast series with Rabbi Zimbalist. Another highlight was world famous cookbook author Susie Fishbein demonstrating her skills to a captivat-ed large crowd of wannabee chefs! Thank you Andrea Caloras for your hard work and arranging so many wonderful events for our community.

In preparation for Pesach, our Nursery School had their annual CHOCOLATE SEDER for our little ones. Children, parents, and grand-parents sat around the Seder tables set up with everything chocolate, as Rabbi Zimbalist took the group through the Seder. This event was pure joy!

The Eternal Flame dinner, our biggest fundraiser of the year to date was held at the beautiful home of Ilene and Steve Smith. No detail was left undone by the Smiths’ as we ate, drank, and enjoyed each other’s company. Our guest speaker was Lauren Steinberg, Asst. Director of the ADL for the NY Region, who gave a stimulating lecture about anti-semi-tism in our country and on our college campuses. We raised much needed

funds and had an absolute wonderful evening. We are still taking donations if anyone would like to participate.

As many of you know the JCC of Rockland is sponsoring the Maccabi games this year at RCC. They need host families for the many young ath-letes coming to Rockland from around the world. Some of you have already volunteered your homes, but more are needed. This is a beautiful mitzvah and experience for your entire family. Please contact the JCC and volunteer your homes for one week in August. They will provide all details.

Our new website is up and running, thanks to the efforts of Steve Holand, Adam Nelson and Ray Verhoeff. It is a work of art. If you would like to submit an article or photos, please contact the office.

Our golf outing is coming up on May 7th. Please participate in a spon-sorship or by playing . . . You could just come and watch me make a fool of myself!

Our annual Dinner Dance is on June 10th and we are honoring Past President Richard and Susan Orlando, Cantor Michelle Freedman and Jackie Iaria, our Nursery School Director. This is our largest and most important event on many levels. Our honorees have, in the past and continue to dedi-cate their lives to our shul and commu-nity. Many of the events I mentioned in this article have in some way been successful because of their efforts. We need to support them! Our Journal for the event is one of our largest sources of revenue. Every ad we get helps to insure our survival. Of course, the dinner and dance is a celebration of our deep friendships and community. I hope to see you all there.

As Passover I try to understand the meaning of freedom, in both its literal and spiritual sense. I wish you and your families a most meaningful and joyous Pesach.

March began with a won-derful class service led by our fourth graders. Though the fourth grade is small, they are a most enthusiastic class and they led a beautiful service.

During Purim, the entire MJC community enjoyed a most festive celebration. In preparation for Purim, our students and teachers put together a wonderful Purim Car-nival, complete with a sponge toss, goldfish, cookie decorating and much more! The students all took part in cre-ating and running the various booths, as well as playing games and winning fun prizes. On Purim evening, our Religious School presented Megillah Shelanu, their own interpretation of the Purim story, including plays, cartoons, raps, and beautiful art work and parts of the original text. After a delicious Ice Cream Social, our Purim Shpielers outdid themselves with the hilarious presentation of the Sound of Shpilkes, after which there was a fun Megillah reading. During the carnival and the Purim celebration, a fabulous time was had by all!!

Our Purim carnival was made pos-sible by the generous help of so many people. I would like to thank Linda Eisen, Lori Bregman, Michelle Breg-man, Steve Caloras, Andrea Caloras, Jaine Rahimi, Darlene Mollov, Laurie Gordon, Rebecca Rahimi, Andrea Steinhardt, Jessica Sosinsky, Marsha Gerson, Ross Plumer, Matt Leifer, Bruce Yore, Stacey Yore and Juan Roman, for all their help with the ice cream social and during the carnival.

I would also like to thank Ilene Smith for putting together all of the beautiful baskets and Rabbi and Ali-son Zimbalist for donating and selling the pickles. Fi-nally, thank you to everyone who came and joined in all

of the festivities and made this a most joyous Purim.

This month, the fourth and fifth grade families participated in an exciting workshop during which they explored “Bringing the Themes of Pesach Closer to Us”. During this session, Morah Nyer, Cantor Re-becca and I led the students and their parents through games and exercises which reviewed the traditional themes of Pesach. In addition, we facilitated family discussions in which we ex-plored the themes of Pesach through modern eyes. The students and their parents also made both Elijah’s and Miriam’s cups to use at the Seders. We hope that the themes from the workshop will be added to their family seders and help bring more meaning and joy to Pesach. The month ended with a yummy Chocolate Seder for the Kindergarten through second graders, who joined in with the Nursery School to enjoy a delicious and informative Seder.

Fundraising Corner

March Madness was in full swing at MJC last month! With 4 consecutive fundraisers held, MJC members and those on the fundraising committee were scrambling!!

Casino Night brought in over 75 gamers!! Thank you to all the families who helped sponsor the event and those who participated in a fun evening, including many of our YCC members!! I think the loudest screams came from the ever popular Craps table, although Roulette and Blackjack were SRO too! Thank You Ross Plumer for providing amazing background music which helped keep the evening lively and Anat Kuperman, for helping to coordinate event details, including the welcome table, raffles prizes & loose ends afterwards. Thank you Lori Bregman for always lending a hand when needed, Samara Cantor for acting as Co-Pit Boss, and Ilene Smith for her creative raffle basket design! Thank You Adam Goodman and Jaine Rahimi for soliciting key raffle prizes. Thank you to our consummate fun-draiser, President, Mark Kamen, for purchasing the food and wine so our guests had plenty to eat and drink all evening, and then manning the bar as well!

Toward the end of the evening, we all held our breath when Rabbi Zim-balist picked the winner of our Super 50/50 Raffle, culminating the end of a “fun” MJC fundraiser. Congratulations to Richard & Lillian Weinberger!! They were the lucky winners, and believe it or not the very first ones to purchase a

ticket back in November!

Over 70 families partici-pated in this exciting fundrais-er which capped at $13,652! THANK YOU ALL!! Get ready for Super 50/50 2013!

Our 3rd Eternal Flame Campaign was held at

the lovely home of Steve and Ilene Smith on March 25th. Sincere thanks to Steve and Ilene as well as Peter Schwartz, Rabbi Zimbalist and Mark Kamen for their deep commitment and tireless efforts in raising necessary funds so MJC can remain a strong and vibrant synagogue with a bright future. Thank you to everyone who supported this important fundraising evening.

A food loving crowd helped wel-come Susie Fishbein to MJC!!! Susie demonstrated festive cooking tech-niques and we all reaped the benefits of her delicious treats! Thank You Stephen Smith for passing on a great fundraiser and forwarding all “Susie” info to get the ball rolling. Thank you Linda Eisen, Anat Kuperman and Lau-rie Gordon for your help putting this fun event together! Special thanks to Juan Roman and Ross Plumer for their help setting up & breaking down the room.

I hope most of you were able to participate in some of the great events held last month! I’m very much look-ing forward to our upcoming Journal Dinner Dance, Sunday, June 10th, at Rockleigh Country Club! Please send in your Journal ad/message today!

Kiddush CornerThank you congregation for the

positive feedback regarding Shabbat Kiddush! The committee will continue to do its best to provide healthy but tasty options and we’re glad that every-one is enjoying the food we have been presenting.

Many people have been asking for recipes. The three biggest requests have been for the dip that we are serv-ing with vegetables, the red cabbage salad and the chick pea salad. The committee is more than happy to share its secrets. We do plan on introducing a few more salad varieties in the weeks ahead and hope that you will continue to come and enjoy Shabbat services and Kiddush at MJC. Happy eating!

Message from Sisterhood

On March 3rd we had our Military Bridge Program, which was a fun night.

Under Anita Marmer’s direc-tions the games began. We played 12 games moving from table to table which gave us a chance to socialize. At the end of each game, the winners took a flag back to their home table. The team with the most flags at the end of the evening were the winners. The winning team was Karen and David Stein and their friends.

On Sunday morning, March 23rd, at our breakfast program “Ask The Rabbi,” many question were ask regarding Jewish Life, Observance and History. Popular questions were polygamy by the patriarch’s, (A HOT TOPIC), passover observance includ-ing the difference between Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews and other inter-esting topics. Some of our 7th graders and their teacher were at this program and they also asked questions. Thank you, Rabbi Zimbalist, for this informa-tive meeting.

Our shopping day at Lord and Tay-lor was a success both for Sisterhood and those that bought the discount cards. As I walked thru Lord and Tay-lor, I kept meeting Montebello people.

With all of our purchases, we will be the best dressed at shul on Shabbat.

Our raffle for the $25. gift card from Lord and Taylor will be held at our April 23rd meeting. GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

One May 21st we are having a book club meeting. The book we will read will be “Lost Wife” by Allison Richmond. Elinore Silver will lead this discussion. Thank you, Ann Nordon, for suggesting this book

Please put these dates on your cal-endar. Looking forward to seeing you.

I wish everyone a healthy, happy Passover with family and friends.

It’s a busy season for the Men’s Club.

We continue to move forward with our Golf Outing fund raiser which has raised over $5,000 in hole and other sponsorships. The overwhelming majority coming from our local retailers and businesses. In order to ensure the outing’s success we need our congre-gants to NOW please step up and con-tribute as either hole sponsors ($100) or sign up now as golfers. If you need a form or have any questions, please contact either me, Kenny Sandler ([email protected]) or Richie Orlando ([email protected]) and we will be more than happy to assist you.

As part of our “FUN”-raising, we brought in a few ‘shekels’ from our first annual NCAA pool. Congratulations to

Men’s Club

Joey Kantrowitz for winning the pool. And, a big thank you to Joey for run-ning the pool.

Soon you will be receiving in the mail our annual Yom HaShoah candle boxes complete with candle and prayer/meditations to honor the 6 mil-lion lives lost in the Holocaust. These candles are sent to each member of our congregation compliments of the Men’s Club. Please note in addition to the candles, enclosed is a form for a voluntary donation. Thank you in advance for those who wish to give.

Finally, on April 21st, the Men’s Club will be hosting the annual Men’s Club Shabbat. Please feel free to join and take part in our service.

2012 Journal Dinner Dance

Dear Fellow Congregants,

It certainly seems like spring is in the air early! With tem-peratures in the 50s and no sign of snow in the forecast, we will hopefully sail smoothly out of the winter season!

Once spring begins, the actions of our fundraising committee turn to our most vital fundraiser of the year — Journal Dinner Dance 2012!

The Journal Dinner Dance is a very special event for Montebello Jewish Center for many reasons. It’s a celebration of another successful year that we can all join in together- as a congregation, as friends, as a family. Every member family is invited. It is our wish and sincere request that every single member family support our Commemorative Journal by purchasing an ad or donation in honor of this year’s honorees. I am proud to announce this year’s honorees are Past President Richard Orlando and Susan Orlando, Cantor Michelle Freedman and Early Childhood Director, Jackie Iaria.

Richie and Susan are mainstays here at Montebello Jewish Center. Separately as well as together they have provided us all with strong leadership, loyal friendship and committed involve-ment to every arm of our shul on a daily basis. Their dedication to the success and growth of MJC is continually inspir-ing.

As our Religious School Director and Cantor, Mi-chelle’s efforts keep evolving! She strives to make MJC fun, educational and financially rewarding for members of all ages. Whether its’ holding Torah Club, organizing our

first Cantorial Concert, or teaching us new tunes to old standards during our recent Shabbaton and other festivals. Michelle leads by example and empow-ers those around her to keep reaching, planning, giving and growing.

Jackie Iaria may hold one of the most important roles in our shul. As Di-rector of our Nursery School, she sets the tone for our children, their parents and teachers to promote a positive and stimulating Jewish learning experience through crafts, songs and creative educational programs. In addition, Jackie organizes and promotes key fundraisers for our Nursery School so it remains a vibrant and respected program in our community.

So, as you can see, this is going to be an event not to be missed! Set Sunday, June 10th on your calendar for our gala celebration and please purchase an ad or place a personal message in our Commemorative Journal in honor of the strong leader-ship and friendship of our honorees, as well as celebrating and supporting Montebello Jewish Center.

Sincerely,

Andrea Caloras
