LETTER from the Editor

This is the first time that I’ve taken space in the Dockside to put my thoughts to paper. I decided this time it was worthy to do so.

June 10th 2016 was the day we lost a Board Member – John Cucci. The lake and its inhabitants...people, animals, fish, birds etc. all shed a tear on that sad day.

If each one of us can take a small piece of John’s passion for conservation of the lake and its surroundings, we’ll all be better for it.

John was one of the original founding members of the Clearwater Lake Area Association and each day he lead by example of how much love he had for our lake and his desire to save it for our future generations. He was one-of-a-kind and I’m so very glad I had the opportunity to know him.

Page three of this issue is a reprint of John’s Memorial Service obituary announcement. Following the memorial are a few shared thoughts from his fellow officers and board members in his remembrance.

John, we say one last thank you for all you did for the lake. You were truly a man who “lead by example.”

LOON Update

– Photo courtesy of Bruce Bjerke; June 2016

The beginning summer was promising. A June report from Bruce Bjerke declared a hatching of one chick from the artificial raft placed in the bay by his home. However, one of the eggs remained unhatched.Another reported sighting a few weeks later was for two additional baby loons swimming with mom and dad on the south end of the lake. The first sighting was with three babies. But with the cruelty that Mother Nature can some time provide, the next sighting was only two.A new location was spotted where mom was sitting on the nest. Its location was just off the shoreline between Pine and High Islands. We are presuming this may be the location from last year that produced babies.Skip Anderson once again has reported “sadness” for his placement of two artificial rafts that didn’t produced any babies one again. Skip said he may find a new spot for 2017.As the summer rolled on and July came into play, the loon spotting was for only one remaining baby loon. Now with August on the calendar, Bruce has noticed the loons are getting in groups in the middle of the lake. His observation is this usually doesn’t happen this early and is hoping this isn’t a sign of an early fall! Yikes…we all agree!

“John was one of the first people I met at the lake. His passion for the lake and surrounding environment were contagious. John’s dedication to the Lake Association and our projects should have all of us asking: “What can I do to carry on the legacy of volunteerism John has left us?” “

– CLAA Board Member

“John was a special man. I enjoyed the couple times I got to do the wa-ter sampling with him and anytime we would talk about “stuff”, most often fishing or lake-related. The man loved the Lord and our lake and I have great respect for our friendship.”

“I really enjoyed the many times we went out to take lake samples. I am so thankful we had those times together, the visits we had, his positive attitude and dedication to our CLAA. He truly loved the lake!”

Volunteers continue annual noxious weed control along the “adopted” section of the Clearwater Lake Highway. Our volunteer weed crew got out early one June morning to spot spray spotted knapweed and thistles along a 3 mile section of the Clearwater Lake Highway where our state flower, the beautiful Showy Lady Slipper, grow. Since this section of the highway has not been blanket sprayed by the county for 5 years, other native plants have started to grow including the common milkweed and Yellow Lady Slippers. Milkweed plants are needed for monarch survival so hope to see more growing along the highway and other places. The Showy Lady slippers bloomed earlier than usual, from mid-June to the end of June. The county provided us with the herbicide used which is appreciated. Thanks also to our volunteer weed crew members.

BUFFER INITIATIVE: You may have heard a few things about this new buffer initiative rolling out over the next two years here in Minnesota and the DNR releasing the much-anticipated Buffer Map. The map shows Minnesota waters that will require some form of protective vegetative buffer around them. Public waterways such as lakes, rivers, and streams represented with the blue lines will require a 50-foot buffer while the green lines, representing public ditches, will require a 16-½ foot buffer (also known as a rod). You can read more about this issue by following this link: http://www.conservationminnesota.org/news/interests/lakes-rivers-and-water/buffers-a-step-in-the-right-direction/
