SRI GURU RAVIDASS TEMPLE PITTSBURGH (CALIFORNIA)’S 29TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED
The American Declaration of Independence reiter-ated that all men are created equal; that they areendowed by their Creator with certain inalienablerights; that among these are life, liberty, and thepursuit of happiness. These are not mere wordsbut the conscience of those who struggled andsacrificed for the birth of a new world of freedom, peace and opportunities where everyone would beequal and assured of dignified living. The AmericanDeclaration of Independence is a testimony of re-volt against foreign rule and laid the foundationsfor human rights and the national sovereignty. TheAmerican Declaration of Independence was madeafter 15 months of the War of Independence. Itbrought to an end all political connection betweenthe united colonies and the state of Great Britain. The delay in the Declaration was primarily due tothe time factor that associated with the consensusmaturation process among the fighting coloniesover complete withdrawal from the British Empire. It was finally by June 10, 1776 a committee wasset up under Jefferson to draft the Declaration andon 4 July 1776 the Declaration was approved and issued.
The Declaration derives its strength fromLockeian philosophy that ‘government rested on acontract between government and governed andthat, if the government failed to deliver the endswhich had persuaded the people to enter that con-tract, it could be overturned. Jefferson spelt thisout explicitly in the Declaration. Men had rights tolife, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and thatto secure these rights, governments are institutedamong men, deriving their just powers from theconsent of the governed; that whenever any formof government becomes destructive of these ends,it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it,and to institute new government, laying its foun-dation on such principles, and organizing its pow-ers in such form, as to them shall seem most likelyto effect their safety and happiness’.
The Declaration further emphasized ratheron a more bold promise and moral value that ‘allmen are created equal and have inalienable rightsto life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’. Al-though for many people such bold contents of theDeclaration look as if they were a great rhetoricbut the conscientious citizen of The United Statesof America have proved that this new nation ofequality, freedom and happiness is in fact a realitythat anyone can experience in person while walk-ing on its vast lands.
