By John Hernandez After three years of plan-ning and negotiating, the Mammoth-San Manuel Uni-fied School District is go-ing solar. Construction and installation of 3,000 solar panels has begun with an estimated completion date around Sept. 16. Plans had been to begin construction in May or June this summer and be completed by the start of the school year but due to permit delays, the project started later than anticipated. The solar project involves building a covered parking lot in the current parking area at the high school. The cov-ered parking will have solar panels on top of it. There is also a solar panel covered staff parking area on the backside of the school by the baseball field being erected. The solar system being built is expected to produce a

Mammoth - San Manuel Schools going solargood percentage of the power for the high school and ad-ministration building. Not only will it save money in electrical costs but the project is costing the district zero dollars to build. The solar company makes their money charging the school for the electricity provided. Super-intendent John Ryan said the district will be paying a set rate to the company. They are locked into a lower rate for the next 20 years, mean-ing that the rates will not be raised during that period. This will help with the de-mand charge at an estimated savings of 10 to 20 percent. It is projected to save 480 kilowatts per year. The solar company is also responsible for the maintenance and repair of the system which will be more savings. While the solar system is being built, parking will be in the dirt parking area by the high school football field. The solar system is one of three cost savings projects the school is working on. The second project was approved a few months ago. It is an

energy performance contract replacing 30 air conditioning units. The current units were over 16 years old. They are being replaced with larger more energy efficient air conditioners. The project also includes an upgraded energy control system that provides for time control and does not allow all the units to kick on at the same time. The units will be paid off with capital funds, not maintenance and operations money. The guar-anteed savings of $26,700 will mean the system will pay for itself over the years. A third project includes two gym coolers with an energy control system being installed through a grant provided by the School Facilities Board. The amount saved in energy costs will eventually pay for the system. The gym is also getting new lighting in the form of new more energy efficient light bulbs. The bulbs use less energy and last longer allowing for additional savings. The solar project has been a long time coming but now that it is here it will be saving the Mammoth-

San Manuel Unified School District a good amount of

money. It was a good deci-sion by the board and admin-

istration to get involved with solar energy.

Casa Grande, AZ – Sun Life Family Health Cen-ter, Pinal County’s largest provider of primary care, received a $136,462 grant award from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to

expand outreach and enroll-ment (eligibility) services. The grant will be to expand Sun Life’s Outreach and Enrollment services to the Coolidge, Maricopa, San Manuel and Oracle com-munities.

Sun Life receives grant funding to expand outreach, enrollment

“Our outreach and en-rollment specialists have been trained to provide application assistance and screening for state funded insurance plans as well as our discount programs,” Sun Life Family Health Center Chief Executive Officer, Travis J. Robinette states. “The staff use a web based, streamlined process over the internet, which provides the applicant quicker processing (than paper applications), and shorter wait times for application determination. We are excited to expand our services to help con-sumers understand their coverage options through the new Health Insurance Marketplace and Medicaid/AHCCCS,” Robinette con-tinues. In their national news release, HRSA announced that Arizona has 17 health centers with 140 sites that served 423,160 patients last year. Over twenty-seven

The Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition accepted a check from the Pinal County Board of Supervisors for $50,000 at its meeting last week in Aravaipa. Pinal County Supervisor Pete Rios along the the Pinal County Economic Development Manager Tim Knavel attended the recent meeting to present the check. The CCEDC board is comprised of local community, government and business leaders from the communities of Superior, Kearny, Hayden, Winkelman, Oracle, Mammoth, San Manuel, Globe, Miami, Dudleyville and Aravaipa. The Coalition uses those funds for economic development efforts for the region. Projects funded by the county funding include operation of the Mobile Visitor Center, Business Success Center and further promotion of the region to potential businesses and investors. “The CCEDC is proud of Pinal County’s continued support in our efforts to grow the regional economy,” said CCEDC President Michael Carnes. “In my opinion, this region is the most beautiful part of Pinal County. It has also been the area hardest hit by volatility in the commodities market with the opening and closing of mining operations,” said Pete Rios. “Pinal County supports economic development directly through our staff and also by working with economic development foundations and coalitions who are often the ‘boots on the ground’ helping local businesses grow, expand and flourish.” “We know that the county’s economic

Public NoticeMammoth San Manuel Unified School District today announced its policy for providing free and reduced-price meals for children served under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. Each school and/or the central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party. The household size and income criteria will be used to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price benefits. Children from households whose income is at or below the guidelines are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Children who are members of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) households, Cash Assistance (CA) units or Food Distribution Program on the Indian Reservation (FDPIR) households are automatically eligible for free meals. SNAP/CA families will be certified by the determining official via Direct Certification. Foster children that are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside. Eligibility for the foster child is based on the child’s income. Application forms are being distributed to all households with a letter informing households of the availability of free and reduced-price meals for their children. Applications also are available at the principal’s office in each school. To apply for free or reduced-price meals, households must fill out the application and return it to the school. The information households provide on the application will be used for that purpose of determining eligibility and verification of data. Applications may be verified at any time during the school year by school or other program officials. For school officials to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price benefits, households receiving FDPIR only have to list their child’s name, FDPIR case number, an adult household member must sign the application. Households which do not list an FDPIR case number must list the names of all household members, the amount and source of monthly income received by each household member, and the social security number of the adult household member who signs the application. If the household member signing does not have a social security number, he/she must indicate that a social security number is not available. An adult household member must sign the application. Under the provisions of the free and reduced-price policy Joanna Diaz, DTR 520-385-2336 ext. 2214 will review applications and determine eligibility. Special to the Miner In June, the National Junior Honor Society from Mt. Vista School in Oracle once again traveled to New York City and Washington DC. 21 students, ten parents, and three teachers went on the trip. While in Washington, they visited the Smithsonian museums, toured the Capitol, visited Mt. Vernon and Arlington Cemetery, and visited many memorials. They

were also treated to a walking “Ghost Tour” of Arlington, VA. The group traveled by bus from Washington to New York where they were able to visit the 9-11 Memorial, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and tour the financial district. They also attended a Broadway play where they enjoyed seeing Cinderella. Students and adults had a great time in Times Square where

they shopped and spotted several celebrities. They were also enthralled as they strolled through Central Park and were entertained by the many street musicians. The trip to Washington DC is a biannual event for the NJHS students at Mt. Vista. Students fund raise throughout the year in order to finance their trips. The district also assists by making tax credit money available to students.
