After two years as commander of the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, the general said it would be hard to bid Robins farewell. General Owen said he was thrilled to have the chance to be commander of what he thinks is one of the greatest Air Force bases. He said he knew when his name appeared on the two-star list there was a chance he could return to Robins for a third assignment and he was excited about the prospect. In June 1996, General Owen made his first appear- ance at Robins as a lieutenant colonel and commander of the 93rd Logistics Group, which was part of the 93rd Air Control Wing, a predecessor to the 116th Air Control Wing. His first goodbye was as a colonel two years later in July 1998. It was only a few months later in February 1999 when he returned to Robins as the C-5 System Program Office director at the WR-ALC. He bid farewell a second time in September 2001. His third appearance was in August 2006 as he took the reins of the WR-ALC as a brigadier general and was promoted only two months later to major general. “There is nowhere I would have rather come to serve our country as a two- star than the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center and Robins Air Force Base because of the wonderful men and women that work here —the civil servants, the uniformed members as well as our contractor workforce,” he said. He said he has enjoyed working side by side with the men and women of Middle Georgia both inside and outside the gates of Robins as com- mander. “I have appreciated the dedication of the workforce here and I would hope they would remember that my objective was to do as I did as a sec- ond lieutenant at my first Air Force base when I was a maintenance offi- cer working B-52s in Strategic Air Command,” General Owen said. “My job back then was to provide my peo- ple the time, the tools, the training and the tech data to do their jobs and if I did that they would succeed and if I didn’t do that they would not suc- ceed,” During his tenure as commander, he continued to provide those who turn the wrenches or play some other role in the depot mission with the nec- essary provisions for success. “I don’t fix airplanes. Construction to begin on new Marine hangar BY AMANDA CREEL [email protected] Under a tent on the base’s outback, members of the Robins community joined with members of the Marine Light/Attack Helicopter Squadron 773 to celebrate the groundbreaking of a hangar symbolizing the units impending arrival to Robins. The flightline stood in the fore- ground of the celebration, adorned with a UH-1 Huey and an AH-1 Cobra forecasting the future of Robins flightline. The helicopter fly- ing unit, known as the Red Dogs, is scheduled to arrive in 2010 as part of the Base Realignment and Closure recommendations and presently is stationed at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Atlanta. Col. Lance Maffett, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing plans officer and BRAC coordinator, greeted the crowd with an old Marine saying, “Marine helicopters don’t fly, they beat the air into submission.” He added, “We are looking for- ward to hearing our type of sound of freedom here at Robins.” Maj. Gen. Tom Owen, Warner Robins Air Logistics Center com- mander, said he was excited to see the Marine unit come here, adding the unit would be another great addition to the joint operations already taking place at Robins. He said the great tradition and his- tory of the unit would allow the Marines to fit right in with the other units residing here. As another sign of the joint ven- ture in the future, the groundbreaking ended not only with the Air Force song, but the Marine song as well. “I think it is another testament to the joint posture we are establishing in the Department of Defense,” Colonel Maffett said of the reloca- tion. The hangar is expected to cost about $21 million and will measure more than 40,000 square feet. The hangar will include an armaments room, admin space and space where helicopter maintenance can be per- formed. The hangar construction is scheduled to be completed some time during the first quarter of 2010 and ready for Marine occupancy, said Rick Kavanaugh project engineer with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. Base energy campaign making great strides, but journey incomplete BY AMANDA CREEL [email protected] As the summer heat continues to rise, members of the Robins Energy team are urging Team Robins to answer Commander Kill A Watt’s call to battle. “August is traditionally the hottest month so we really have to focus on waste control as the tem- peratures rise,” said Judah Bradley, a Robins energy manag- er. Since the energy awareness campaign went into full swing just before the Memorial Day holiday, the office has already seen a decrease in energy usage. In June, energy use was reduced by 10.26 percent in comparison to energy use in June 2007. After two months of energy awareness efforts, members of the energy team are thrilled with the decline in unnecessary energy use so far, but said the battle against rising energy costs and wasteful energy use has just begun. “It’s important to make the effort every day, every weekend, anytime you are not here,” said Dave Bury, Robins energy man- ager. The team was quick to point out there have already been a few successes in the energy battle. Both the Memorial Day and Independence Day holidays are great examples of the success of the Robins community’s energy awareness efforts. On the two holidays, there was a 35 per- cent reduction in energy use com- pared to an aver- age Robins workday. This was a 16 percent reduction in compari- son to the previous Memorial Day and a 12 percent reduction from the previous Independence Day. “Our Memorial Day and July 4th holidays used the lowest amount of electricity in six years compared to previous holidays,” Mr. Bury said. During both holidays, the team surveyed various areas and was able to see the efforts of Team Robins throughout the base. Though Mr. Bury said it is important for the Robins commu- nity to remember the energy battle doesn’t stop when we return to work it is a day in and day out struggle. “This is not just a holiday thing. We need to be conscious energy consumers every day,” Mr. Bury said. The energy team agreed it was hard to measure exactly what actions are making the difference, but the team said the numbers are on a downward spiral, which means whatever the community is doing is working. “These small steps are making a big difference. People are turn- ing off lights and computer moni- tors and unplugging things and it shows,” Mr. Bradley said. Though the base is on the right track by continuing to weed out unnecessary energy use, the battle is not just against energy waste. The energy team is also dealing with the rise of energy prices. “Our utility bills are rising at an alarming rate,” Mr. Bradley said. “Our consumption decrease is helping us avoid some of the sharply rising utility bills.” The pair agreed that the num- bers indicate Robins is on the right path and should contin- ue the present energy conservation efforts. W e just ask members of Team Robins to continue mak- ing the effort, because together we can make a dif- ference,” Mr. Bradley said. The unit of 150 active-duty Marines and 300reservists will bring sixCobras and three Hueysto the base.

Some of the otherbuildings the Marinesquadron will renovate aspart of their relocationhere include Bldgs. 2066,2067, 2065 and 2061.The buildings will bemodified to include areassuch as armament rooms,a simulator and adminis-trative areas needed bythe Marine unit. Someordnance storage build-ings will also be renovat-ed for use by the Marineunit.

He said he also worked diligently toprepare the center to face whatever thefuture holds for it and the Air Force.

“I also hope members of the baseand Middle Georgia community seemy efforts during the past two yearsproviding long-range vision to help thisair logistics center and the men andwomen who work here be prepared --not just for next quarter or next fiscalyear, but be prepared for what’s comingdown the road five, 10 or 20 years fromnow,” he said.

Some of the many programs thatcame to fruition during GeneralOwen’s latest stint at Robins includeHigh Velocity Maintenance, GeorgiaRobins Aerospace MaintenancePartnership, and the ElectronicWarfare Life Cycle ManagementGroup.

“One that I think is really going tostandout is the High Velocity

Maintenance initiative and like a lot ofthings, we just had a vision that theremight be a better way of doing thingsand so we challenged ourselves,” hesaid.

He added that the Center has com-mitted itself to finding a better way todo aircraft maintenance resulting inmore aircraft availability.

“We have been at it for about a yearand some of the brightest minds wehave here at the Warner Robins ALCare really rethinking how we are goingto do the full range of base-level, inter-mediate-level and depot-level inspec-tions,” General Owen said.

He said he is very excited about G-RAMP and what the partnership meansfor the future of the Air Force and thefuture of Robins Air Force Base andMiddle Georgia.

“That partnership will result in moreeconomical and more rapid support tothe warfighter and our critical airliftassets that provide humanitarian reliefthroughout the world anytime there is amanmade or natural disaster,” the com-mander said.

General Owen said he was disap-pointed he wouldn’t continue to seethese projects develop as Center com-mander, but said he will still have a

prime interest as he takes his new posi-tions at Wright Patterson Air ForceBase.

“As the director of Logistics andSustainment, these initiatives are rightthere on my radar scope,” GeneralOwen said.

General Owen said he believes inpartnerships because in the end com-bined resources and team work result ina better final product.

Under the the general’s command,numerous partnerships have beenformed under his command such aspartnerships with Middle GeorgiaTechnical College and Macon StateCollege.

“I have used the phrase partnershipsvery frequently because I firmlybelieve that nobody achieves anythinggreat working by themselves,” GeneralOwen said. “In our business today, ourteam is not just those who we see insidethe fences of Robins Air Force Base.”

He said Team Robins includes theeducational institutions here in Georgiafrom elementary to the university level,the defense industry, the other air logis-tics centers, our headquarters at AirForce Material Command and head-quarters U.S. Air Force.

“The attitude I have tried to bring is

let’s be inclusive, let’s get all the rightpeople to the table, and when we are inthe decision mode, let’s have open dis-cussions and make sure we get all opin-ions out and I am convinced we willend up with a better answer,” GeneralOwen said.

He said he is also proud of howTeam Robins has used the manyinspections from higher headquartersduring his tenure to help improve thecenter.

“Starting with the Unit ComplianceInspection, shortly after I got here in2006 in which we did very well, but gota good list of things that needed to becorrected. And the LogisticsStandardization and Evaluation Teamcame in here and gave us a wake up calland said we really needed to focus toimprove many processes and makesure the people are following propersafety practices,” he said.

“Collectively we all focused a lot ofattention and when the LSET teamreturned there was all positive com-ments with no major findings,” he said.“And, it culminated with our operationalreadiness inspection just a few monthsago where Team Robins really wateredthe inspectors’ eyes and the overall rat-ing for the Center was excellent.”

A technical sergeant wasderelict in the performanceof her duties by wrongfullyusing her government travelcard for unofficial purchas-es and for using her gov-ernment issued cell phonefor personal use. TELECONFERENCESI recently contacted the Robins tele-

phone service to set up a call in numberfor three different teleconferencesinvolving five to six other bases. Theoperator told me that the system wasdown and had been for three weekswith no repair date in sight. This con-

cerns me especially in light of the limit-ed TDY funds. These conference callsare used in lieu of very expensiveTDYs. Can something be done toexpedite this process and get the systemrepaired?

COLONEL BERRY’S RESPONSE: I certainly appreciate your steward-

ship in keeping our travel costs down.We have good news for you regardingthe base teleconference bridge. Theteleconference bridge is now fixed andfully operational. Due to the cost ofnew equipment ($131K), we madeevery effort to fix the current system.After a good deal of contractor coordi-

nation and analysis, we were able to fixthe system for less than $2,000.Although this took longer than purchas-ing new equipment and was an unfortu-nate inconvenience, the efforts of the78th Communications Squadron savedthe government approximately$128,200. Thank you for your patience.

Have you submitted your CareerDevelopment Plan for the LeadershipDevelopment and Utilization pro-gram? A CDP is a web-based formthat you and your supervisor create todocument your career goals, areas forself improvement, and potentialcareer broadening positions youmight like to hold. An example of acareer goal would be “I aspire to bethe 580th Aircraft SustainmentGroup Director.” Example areas forself improvement may include com-pleting Air Command and StaffCollege in seminar, or obtaining thenext level of AcquisitionProfessional Development Programcertification in your functional area.

As a General Schedule or aNational Security Pay Systememployee at Robins, what can theLDU program do for you? First, youhave to agree that lately the only con-stant thing in our Air Force has beenthe frequency of changes. To betterequip ourselves to deal with all thechange the Air Force has started tofocus on individuals at the SeniorLeader level (formerly GS-15) to

have a breadth of experience ratherthan a depth in one particular func-tional area. Leadership with a broadbackground is better positioned toadapt to change, which in the longrun, will make the Air Force better.Through the LDU program you canobtain experiences outside of yourcurrent wing, or functional area righthere at Robins. This will better pos-ture you for future challenges whenyou assume the role of SeniorLeader. The LDU program hasplaced over 60 Warner Robins AirLogistics Center personnel in careerbroadening and mind expandingpositions since 2006. One employeeput in last year’s CDP “the LDU pro-gram has been a great opportunity forme. Prior to the career broadeningopportunity last year, I had worked inmy current directorate for all 21years of my career. The transition tomy current Wing has given me a dif-ferent, refreshing perspective, and Itruly appreciate the opportunity.”

To better serve the Air Force andthe Robins community this year theLDU program will manage only the

second level and above supervisorypositions in the ALC, the 78th AirBase Wing, and the Robins GlobalLogistics Support Center. All firstlevel supervisory positions will bemanaged by each respective wing;this will allow each wing the abilityto develop their personnel internally.

What are the criteria to be eligiblefor the LDU program? The LDU pro-gram is open to all employees atRobins. In order to be considered a“Groom” candidate you must have: aMasters Degree, a minimum of twoyears in your current position, a cur-rent rating of a three under NSPS, ora 77 under the GS system, and haveat least 12 months of continuoussupervisory experience in the lastfive years. In the future, employees

will need to have completed at leastone Intermediate DevelopmentalEducation class such as AirCommand and Staff College. If youhave any questions about your eligi-bility, please talk to your supervisoror call the LDU panel members atthe link above.

What happens if I don’t want toparticipate in the program? The AirForce needs folks to accomplish theirjobs and be the best at what they do.With that said, you may not aspire tobe a leader but your current job maybenefit from you getting a littlecareer broadening in another func-tional area, or wing. If the LDU pro-gram decides that your position is afertile training ground for aspiringleaders of the future; managementreserves the right to reassign you toanother position of equal importanceand use your position to groom otherAir Force members. So if you areready for a leadership role at Robins,or perhaps in the larger Air Force, getyour CDP completed and submittedby August 1.

I think about the proud heritage ofthe Air Force. I think about Gen. BillyMitchell betting his career on airpower.I think about the Tuskegee Airmen andtheir struggle to break into a segregatedAir Force. I think about Brig. Gen.Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager in his X-1and Sgt. John Levitow’s heroic act overthe jungles of Vietnam. Furthermore, Ithink about the constant struggle of thewar on terrorism and our selflessyoung Airmen who have answeredtheir nation’s call to engage in it.

We are young compared to the restof the services; however, our heritagecan be traced to before the Wrightbrothers’ heavier-than-air flight to the

use of balloons during the Civil War.We are Airmen above all else — oneteam and one fight — with a traditionof honor and legacy of valor. I am anAirman first and a first sergeant sec-ond. When you see Soldiers, Sailors orMarines, they have service distinction.They are proud to be called by thoseterms.

In today’s Air Force, the term“Airman” is earned in basic training.Airmen are honored with a coin cere-mony and the opportunity to wear theAir Force service dress for the firsttime. This is a special time, as well itshould be, because not everyone whoapplies to the Air Force will be calledAirman. These men and women havevolunteered to defend their country

with their lives if necessary. When we do business each day, we

should remember we are dealing withour fellow Airmen. Remember that wehave all willingly taken the oath ofenlistment. Whether you deal in bul-lets, biscuits, B-1B Lancers, back payor bicuspids, we are all Airmen, boundby the common bond of the professionof arms.

The Air Force has stopped using thenoncommissioned officer creed, thesenior NCO creed, the first sergeantoath and even the chief’s creed. Somemay say that these are a part of our his-tory — things we have worked hard forin order to be able to stand next to ourpeers and recite our oath or creed. Wemay be affiliated with different groups

according to our Air Force specialtycode, job titles or ranks, but we mustnever forget that we are Airmen first.At most promotion ceremonies, younow hear only the Airman’s Creed. Weare one group, from airman basic togeneral, unified as the guardians offreedom and justice. We are ournation’s sword and shield, its sentryand avenger.

We are wingmen, leaders and war-riors. Together we will never falter andwill not fail. Pride in service, heritageand lineage will reinforce our commit-ment to our mission to fly, fight andwin.

Lisa Matney is knownaround Robins’ Airman andFamily ReadinessCenter for her “go-getter” personalitywhen it comes to tak-ing care of militarymembers and theirfamilies.

Mrs. Matney, acommunity readinessconsultant at theA&FRC, will deployfor four months to AlUdeid Air Base,Qatar, in late fall to live out herpassion for meeting militarymembers and their families’needs.

The 37-year-oldHawkinsville, Ga., native wasrecently selected by a team atthe Air Force Personnel Centerfor the volunteer mission.

“My role here is to getinvolved with the new mem-bers who are coming toRobins Air Force Base andthose who are leaving Robins,to get in touch with spousesand provide them careeropportunities,” she said. “Wealso touch on financial aspectsfor single and family mem-bers. We also get people readyto separate or retire from themilitary. There are a number ofresources that we provide forour military and civilian coun-terparts.”

The only real differencebetween her job in thedeployed location and at homestation is, in fact, the location,Mrs. Matney said.

“If there are financialneeds, I’m going to be able tosit down and discuss withthem financial opportunities,”she said.

director, said that’s only oneexample of what Mrs. Matneywill bring to the deployedlocation.

“Lisa and her militarycounterpart will beworking long hours,serving the entirepopulation andthey’ll be embeddedin the communitythere at Al Udeid,”she said. “They maybe providing classeson stress manage-ment or communi-cation with theirfamilies. They might

even do some financial coun-seling.”

Mrs. Parker said Mrs.Matney is an ideal person forthe job.

“Lisa was chosen fromamong her peers because shehas a well-rounded back-ground,” she said. “They wantsomeone who is a true consult-ant who can cover just aboutany topic that might come upthat’s part of the Airman andFamily Readiness Center mis-sion. Lisa has experience in allareas that we cover -- fromtransition assistance to reloca-tion assistance.”

Mrs. Parker said Mrs.Matney’s skills with financialmatters and communicationswith family members of allages will work well in thedeployed location.

The concept of deployingcivilians in this way has beenin the works for more than adecade, but it’s just recentlytaken shape, Mrs. Parker said.

“Air Combat Commandspearheaded the initiative,”she said. “Jean Michel, chiefof family matters for ACC atLangley AFB, really got itgoing and the first people todeploy were people at ACC’s

Airman and Family ReadinessCenters. Just this year, itexpanded to consultants acrossthe Air Force who would liketo volunteer to go.”

The A&FRC director saidshe’s thrilled to have one ofher own representing Robinsin theater.

“It’s an awesome opportu-nity for Lisa, but I also see it asan awesome opportunity forthe men and women she’ll beserving there,” she said. “Lisais a fireball. She knows herbusiness and she has a lot ofcreativity and a lot of energy.Her passion is very high, so Iknow she is going to servethem very well.”

While Kim Myers, a com-munity readiness technician atRobins’ A&FRC, is happyabout Mrs. Matney’s opportu-nity, she admits the officewon’t be the same without her.

“I don’t think they could’vechosen anyone better,” shesaid. “I think Lisa does anincredible job representing ourAirmen, our families, and ourcivilian population. I don’tthink you’ll find someone whowill work harder for (militarymembers) to get them theresources and supplies forwhatever they need to make iteasier while they’re overthere.”

Mrs. Myers said Mrs.Matney will be an invaluableresource in the face of familyemergencies.

Despite all the good she’lldo at Al Udeid, Mrs. Myerssaid she will be greatly missedwhile she’s gone.

Mrs. Matney said she’sgrateful to her A&FRC teamfor making the chance todeploy possible.

“It’s because of them step-ping up to the plate that I’vegot this opportunity,” she said.

Robins family readiness consultant to bring A&FRC services to deployed location

Improving aircraft avail-ability is a priority throughoutthe Air Force and the C-5Galaxy fleet is working toensure aircraft availability is atan optimum level in the future.

The C-5, which is sus-tained here, is the first to use acommercial process called aMaintenance Steering Groupto help ensure the fleet is mis-sion ready.

The mission of the MSG-3,which is part of the 730thAircraft Sustainment Group,is to increase C-5 availabilityfor the warfighter. Though thepurpose is to have more C-5sin the sky, there is a secondarybenefit—a cost reduction.

The MSG-3 team esti-mates aircraft availability tobe increased by seven, whichScott Wrigley, chief of C-5systems engineering,described as a conservativeestimate of renewed aircraftavailability once the programis in full swing.

The key to the success ofthe MSG-3 is to decreaseunscheduled maintenance,said Mr. Wrigley.

Unscheduled maintenancemakes up the majority ofmaintenance performed on theC-5 fleet, he said.

“An aircraft never breaksdown as you are pulling intothe maintenance hangar,” Mr.Wrigley added.

He said it is important to beproactive and use the pastmaintenance on the aircraft toreduce downtime in the field.

“After 40 years we have alot of history on this plane, weknow how long something onthe aircraft is going to last,”Mr. Wrigley said.

This knowledge allowsmaintainers at the depot –levelto make informed decisionsabout areas of the aircraft thatmight need maintenance.

The MSG-3 plans to usemore in-depth inspectionssuch as major and minorisochronal inspections toensure any needed mainte-nance for the aircraft is donebefore the aircraft is returnedto the field.

“We are really going to getinto the weeds for that inspec-tion,” Mr. Wrigley said.

Needed maintenance isdetermined as anything thatthe maintainers feel will not

make it to the aircraft’s nextscheduled maintenance inter-val, explained Mr. Wrigley.

“You get more bang foryour buck when you addressunscheduled maintenance dur-ing scheduled maintenance,”said Dodd Hamlin, reliabilityengineer.

By being proactive themaintenance is done beforethe malfunction occurs, whicheliminates additional part fail-ures related to the malfunc-tion. For example when a gearin the gearbox is replacedbefore it fails it eliminates thethreat of damage to the timingbelt that could rip the engineapart.

Mr. Hamlin explained thatmaintenance issues found inthe field are more costlybecause a MaintenanceRecovery Team will have tobe taken away from its homestation to wherever themechanical failure occurred.

“If you fail in Timbuktu,you don’t have the facility orthe tools to fix the failure. Sowe have to send an MRT tothe location. This means theyare leaving their home stationshorthanded. We don’t have ateam just waiting around torecover an aircraft,” Mr.Hamlin said.

The question is do we wantto pay for the maintenancenow or later said Russ Alford,chief engineer.

“We can either do it now orin Baghdad,” Mr. Wrigleysaid.

One of the reasons themajority of maintenance hasbeen unscheduled is programdepot maintenance has beendesigned to primarily look atstructural maintenance, whichonly accounts for about 20percent of C-5 maintenancethe trio explained.

By focusing on structuralmaintenance issues duringPDM, mechanical, electricaland avionics or system issueson the aircraft, which make upthe other 80 percent weregoing unnoticed or unre-paired.

“We traditionally don’tlook at (system issues) untilthe functional test,” Mr. Alfordsaid.

“Now we are going to belooking at the aircraft from tipto tail,” Mr. Wrigley said. “Itshould cut down on all thoselast minute problems we find

at functional test.” The MSG-3 philosophy is

to ‘fix it before its broke’rather than “flying to fail” theway the C-5 program has donein the past.

Doing other needed main-tenance during scheduledmaintenance will not lengthenthe amount of time the aircraftspends in maintenancebecause the maintenance canbe done simultaneously, Mr.Wrigley said.

However, it will allow thetime between PDM cycles toincrease such as for the C-5 Aand C models it will increasefrom five to eight years andfor the B model from seven toeight years.

Along with the PDM, thehierarchical maintenance pro-gram also schedules mainte-nance events on a smallerscale in shorter time incre-ments such as four-year, 16-month and four-month tasks.

The MSG-3 methodolo-gy’s longer PDM cycles weretested or prototyped on two C-5s known to be problem air-craft.

The first of which had 39slat failures and the secondhad 14 in the 12 months priorto the methodology change. Inthe 24 months after thechange, the first had one slatproblem reported and the lat-ter had none.

The trio said they havealready made great strides inpreparing to implement thenew maintenance philosophysuch as building the mainte-nance packages for the C-5and converting from tradition-al technical order books tocommercial-based workcards,which can be easily convertedto a digital system.

“We are trying to get out ofthe dark ages,” Mr. Wrigleysaid.

Because of the strides theMSG-3 has already made inrequirements the team willbegin running dry runs on thedifferent maintenance events.The first, a minor isochronalinspection, will be completedat Westover (Mass.) AirReserve Base in August. InApril of 2009, Robins willcomplete a dry run for thePDM cycle.

“We are doing this to makesure what we have written canbe accomplished,” Mr. Alfordsaid.

Robins is working overtimeto help its members livehealthy lives. Joining in theeffort is a trio at the Health andWellness Center, who have thetask of educating and motivat-ing the base population onsuch topics as health, nutrition,diet and exercise.

The HAWC sponsorsnumerous classes, manydesigned to help active-dutymembers pass the Air Forcephysical fitness test. Threeeducators work together toensure the Airmen here haveall the right tools to be success-ful.

April Howard, a registeredand licensed dietician, is thenewest member of the HAWCteam. She teaches a healthyweight class, providing valu-able nutrition and diet plans forthose with a desire to shed afew extra pounds.

Ms. Howard, who earned abachelor’s degree in nutritionand food science from GeorgiaSouthern University, spentsome time in Food Servicesbefore moving to the HAWCin June. She said she lovesnutrition and loves teaching, soworking at the HAWC is a per-fect fit, although there havebeen challenges.

“I know nutrition well and Iknow how to present it, but it isa totally different populationthan I’ve ever dealt with,” shesaid. “The military has differ-ent protocols, formalities andguidelines and there seems tobe a different mentality of howthey wish to be treated andeducated. That has been thebiggest learning curve, but Ilove what I am doing.”

Ms. Howard said the class-es being taught are invaluableto anyone who is looking toimprove health and comes tothe classes with an open mind.

“If your goal is weight lossor weight maintenance, I willteach you something that willmake your life easier. I haveinformation that will assist youin being healthy, if you listen,”she said.

The second member ofthe trio is Annalea Celio, anurse and health educator.Mrs. Celio was stationed atRobins in 1989 as active-duty military and when sheretired, she moved back tothe area. She has more than30 years experience as anurse. She teaches severalhealth class, including thetobacco cessation and dia-betes management classes.

Mrs. Celio said peopleoften don’t take advantage ofthe HAWC simply becausethey are unaware of the servic-es and classes offered. Othersdon’t realize the HAWC iswilling and able to workaround busy schedules.

“A lot of our classes areboth in the day and in theevening. We are trying to beaccessible, to accommodateeveryone,” she said. “Weencourage people to attend ourclasses, but we also work withindividuals on a one-on-onebasis. We know this is a mili-tary installation, so we try to beflexible and work aroundschedules.”

The third HAWC instructoris Jamie Martin, a fitness pro-gram manager who teaches fit-ness fundamentals, healthy liv-ing and Fit to Fight, amongothers. Mr. Martin, who has adegree in exercise science,enjoys the challenges of help-ing those at Robins pass phys-ical fitness tests or improvehealth.

“I enjoy working here; it’swhat I went to school to do,”he said. “I enjoy working withall levels. It’s challengingworking with leadership inresolving issues on fitness and

The top active-duty golfersin the Air Force will convergeon Robins’ Pine Oaks GolfCourse beginning Sunday fora four-day tournament as partof Air Force golf trainingcamp. Nearly 40 golfers willcompete for a chance to beinvited to participate on theAir Force golf team.

Tech. Sgt. Ty Reyes, NCOin charge of Air Force sports,was involved in selecting thetraining camp participants.He said this is one of thestrongest groups of golfers tocompete for a spot on the AirForce team.

“We have a lot of returningveterans and a lot of strongyoung players, so this tourna-ment should be highly com-petitive,” Sergeant Reyessaid. “The great thing aboutgolf is it’s based on tourna-ment scores, so everyone inthe field has an equal chanceof making the team.”

The top six men and thetop three women are selectedto the Air Force team and willcompete against teams fromthe Army, Navy and Marinesin a tournament at FortGordon, Ga. Aug 8-14.

Tech. Sgt. Martin Bajala,78th Logistics ReadinessSquadron, said having thetournament here will increasehis chances of making theteam because of his familiari-ty with the course.

“I have a ‘home court’advantage,” he said. “I’vebeen practicing three times aweek on the course and amprepared for the tournament.”

Also participating in thetraining camp are Master Sgt.Mark Schwab, 116th MissionSupport Group, and Airman1st Class Kent Parsons, 53rdCombat Communications

Squadron. Air ForceReserve Command’s Tech.Sgt. Christopher McIlwainwas also invited to partici-pate but will miss trainingdue to family obligations.

Clay Murray, managerof Pine Oaks, said hiscrews have been workingdiligently to prepare thecourse for the tournament.

“It’s an honor to havethis tournament and we aretaking it very seriously,”Murray said. “The best AirForce active-duty golfersare participating so wewant the course to be in thebest condition possible.

We are getting the course inthe best condition wecould.”

Murray said with thecaliber of players partici-pating, their aim is to makethe course a little morechallenging. They changedHole 5, which normallyplays as a par 5, to a 448-yard par 4. Hole 3 will alsoplay longer than usual.

Bajala said the changesare noticeable, particularthe work done on courseimprovements. “In thethree years I’ve been atRobins, I’ve never seen thecourse look this good.”

Youth finds success on local softball team

Although as a military depend-ent, Julia Bell is used to being thenew kid on the block and a bit dif-ferent from her classmates, the11-year-old sixth grader saiddividing lines fade away whenshe’s on the softball field.

The Dayton, Ohio, native is inher second year of playing for theKrushers, a team within the PerryJunior League, a Dixie Softballsanctioned league.

Julia’s All-Star team recentlywon their state championship,which afforded the Perry MiddleSchooler a spot on the GeorgiaTeam for the Dixie World Seriesin Alexandria, La., which beginSaturday.

Even if she wasn’t at the top ofher game, Julia said she loves thesport.

“My grandfather in Montanataught me how to play and catchand he got me interested in soft-ball, so my dad signed me up,”she said.

Her father, Lt. Col. John Bell,director of Operations in the562nd Combat SustainmentSquadron, said his daughter fell inlove with softball right off the bat.

“In the spring of 2007, Juliadecided she wanted to start play-ing softball,” he said. “She hadnever played organized softballbefore, so we found out aboutPerry and their Dixie SoftballLeague program, which is calledPerry Junior League. We realizedwhat a great program that was andhow many kids were involved inthe Perry area.”

Marni Echols-Bell, Julia’smom, said she and her husbanddo what they can to help Juliareach her softball playing poten-tial, practicing two to three hoursa day, five days a week.

“I’m very proud of her com-mitment and just how hard she’sworked,” she said.

Her father is equally proud ofhis daughter’s new found talent.

“We’re all amazed by howwell she can hit the ball,” hesaid. “She has had several in-the-field homeruns this yearand she seems to be prettygood at handling the fast pitch-ing.”

Michelle Bearden, theKrushers team mom, said thesoftball player with militaryroots brings more than a greatcatcher’s arm to the team.

“She has a great attitude,”she said. “She’s always tryingto get the girls motivated, try-ing to get them pumped up.She’s always supporting themwhen they’re down. If some-body doesn’t get a good hit,she’s always trying to encour-age them.”

Bearden said Julia’s mili-tary connection makes her aneven greater asset to the team.

“She becomes a team play-er because she knows how toget along and make thingswork in a difficult situation,”she said. “You don’t alwayshave personalities that gotogether on a team and thenyou have some kids like Julia

who try to get them togetherand encourage them to befriends.”

Echols-Bell attributesJulia’s ease with finding com-mon ground with others to herAir Force upbringing.

“I think a lot of it has to dowith the fact that (our kids)have had to move and adjustand go with the flow,” shesaid.

Bell said his daughter hasmade a team full of friendssince she began the sport.

“She’s kind of staked aplace for herself, not just onthe team, but also at schooland in the community,” hesaid. “It’s great to see howinvolved the Warner Robinsand Perry area and the wholeHouston County area are inyouth baseball and softball.Right now, this seems the cen-ter of the youth baseball andsoftball world.”

Despite all the hype of herupcoming softball WorldSeries championship, Juliasaid she just wants to have funon the field.

OWEN BIDS FAREWELL TO TEAM ROBINS Six years, eight months. Out of the

past 12 years two months of my life andcareer, that’s how long my family and Ihave called Robins Air Force Base andMiddle Georgia our home.

As military assignments go, that’s along time to spend at any one installa-tion. Granted, our years at Robinsweren’t consecutive. As many know,this is my third assignment here, but thesum total of our years here has given mea unique perspective – not only on themilitary profession and Air Force logis-tics, but also on various aspects of lead-ership and people.

Our Robins “three-peat” in and ofitself has been a learning experience inmore ways than one. I was handed alarger responsibility every time I cameback to Robins. Of course, the job I tookon this time was the most important I’vehad to date. Being an ALC commanderwas the greatest challenge I’ve taken onin my career.

I’m proud to say, thanks to the effortsof this great team, we’ve chalked upquite a few in the “win” column in thepast two years at Robins. Many of thosevictories are highlighted in this specialsection.

In a nutshell, the performance of themen and women of Team Robins duringmy tenure has been astounding. It hasbeen gratifying to be at the helm of ateam that dedicates itself to the mission,meets or surpasses every goal andanswers every challenge.

You saved your best for when thepressure was on. Such was the case withthe Operational Readiness Inspection.To solidify the case for our champi-onship standing, our team scored an“Excellent” overall rating for this criti-cal IG check; you also achieved atremendous comeback win in theLogistics Standardization andEvaluation Team revisit. Every TeamRobins member was proud. That goesdouble for me.

In retrospect, knowing our team sowell, I have to wonder how anyonecould have doubted the outcome.

When I arrived to take command, theRobins motto was “People First,Mission Always.” I thought it was per-fect. Since World War II, this AirLogistics Center had proven itself to bea strong cog in the machinery of ournational defense. It had done so on thestrength of its people – the remarkable

people of Middle Georgia. I knew aslong as they were taken care of, thesetraditionally dedicated, patriotic peoplewould take care of the mission. You’veproven me absolutely correct on that,and, in doing so, you’ve re-enforced agreat lesson in leadership for me. Fromeach and every member of TeamRobins, I’ve discovered anew that youcan learn a lot from the people you lead.Thanks to all of you, I leave instilledwith a greater confidence in my fellowAirmen and the principles of hard workso ingrained in the American ethic.

On occasion, I’ve made a point oftelling folks about my personal back-ground: that my father was a B-17 leadbombardier in WWII and how mymother gave up college to work atWalker Army Airfield during the yearsof my youth. Their life’s choicessparked my interest in aviation andinstilled a desire in me to serve ourcountry. I reiterated those facts becauseI wanted everyone to understand justhow strongly I feel about the mission ofthis Center.

Now, as I write to you one last timeas WR-ALC Commander, I mentionthese facts again for a different reason. I

want you to know just how grateful thisson of an Airman is for the job you’redoing for our Center, our Nation and theU.S. Air Force.

It’s been an amazing three tours hereat Robins AFB for us, and an even moreincredible two years as CenterCommander. We’ve had some goodtimes. We’ve accomplished much andset the table for even more advancementin the future.

We’d made such good friends herebefore, our return two years ago waslike coming home. That being true, itmakes it all the harder to leave. But nowI am called to take on a new challenge.Please know that I leave you havinglearned much from you and havingdrawn strength and inspiration fromyour unfailing support. I can’t thankeach of you enough for your hearty alle-giance and your spirited performance.
