“The Lord has been good to us and we are glad indeed.” Ps. 126:3
Dear Crusaders,
It is with great joy that I embrace the blessing of ministering at Mater Dei Catholic High School. I have had the great privilege of knowing and working with both of my predecessors, Dr. Estelle Kassebaum and Mr. Thomas Beecher.
and vision for Catholic education at Marian/Mater Dei Catholic High School in the Diocese of San Diego, and to carry on the torch that will light the path for many generations to come.
As you browse through this issue of the Crusader Connection, I encourage you to remember that a Crusader was an individual who made a vow to wear the cross of Christ and was thus considered a soldier for the Church. A cross is not meant to be just a precious piece of jewelry or a nice relic in our wallet, it represents our willingness to make the mandate of Christ to love one another a reality. We, as proud Crusaders, are called to be the presence of Christ for those around us... right here, right now, bringing to table the time, talents and resources that God has given us. We come just as we are to be witnesses of love, for Christ.
May the blessing of another school year be a new opportunity for each one of us to hold on tight to the hand of our Blessed Mother, Mary. May the knowledge and understanding of our dignity of children of God and of sons and daughters of Mary, carry us through our journey with joy and peace; so that we can make a difference in the world, because we go forth in the name of Christ.
You are in my prayers,
Sister Lilia M. Barba, SJS MDCHS President

Suzanne M. Till, Ph.D.
Dr. Till graduated in 2000 with a Ph.D. in Water Resources Geography from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She has over ten years of experience in teaching Environmental Science and Geospatial Technologies, along with managing habitat restoration projects. Dr. Till’s publications result from her collaborative research with U.S. and Mexican college students concerning urban watersheds, water quality and wetlands restoration. A publication addressing the development of the Alamar River in Tijuana into an urban river park garnered her an award from the United Nations Environmental Programme. As watershed coordinator for the Southern California Wetlands Recovery Project, Dr. Till managed wetlands restoration projects and budgets throughout San Diego County. The average budget for a typical wetlands restoration project she managed was $1,500,000. In 2011, Dr. Till received a grant from the State of California to create climate change curriculum and student experiments for San Diego County teachers. Dr. Till is an outdoor scientist, so Mater Dei students can expect to spend a lot of time

MEET THE
I served as principal of Vincent Memorial Catholic High School from 1999 – 2012.
I embraced the prospect to minister at Mater Dei Catholic High School because adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Catholic Education of children is the charism of my congregation. Bishop Brom asked my Provincial superior, Sister Maria Paz Uribe, SJS, if I could serve as President at MDCHS, and I accepted because I believe it is God’s will for me to assume this new assignment.
12 MATER DEI CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
What I most look forward to is to get to know and love the school community at MDCHS, to promote the love of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, and to give of myself wholeheartedly to continue the mission of Marian/Mater Dei Catholic High School.
One of the greatest challenges that I believe Marian/Mater Dei, and Catholic education in general currently faces, is the desire to make Catholic secondary education available to as many young individuals as possible, especially to those who really long to be part of this wonderful school community.
What I will miss most about Vincent Memorial Catholic High School is my Vincent ‘family.’ VMCHS has shaped who I am as a leader, as a Religious sister, and as a human being.
My primary role as president of Marian/Mater Dei Catholic
advancement of Catholic secondary education in the Diocese of San Diego.
During the time I served as a principal at Vincent Memorial Catholic High School I was responsible for the overall program, including Catholic identity, organization for student learning, student services, curriculum and instruction, athletics,

organized differently. While both the president and principal guard the Catholicity and mission of the school, the president directs the administration, public relations and institutional advancement; and the principal oversees the functionality of the day-to-day curricular and extracurricular activities, faculty, parents and students wellbeing.
I was blessed to be a member of the MDCHS WCEA/WASC Accrediting team in the fall of 2011. During that time I became somewhat familiar with the school community; however, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to become part of it. Recently, I have been able to meet with the faculty and staff, School Board, other personnel and some students. I have received a very warm, positive welcome. I perceive a Christ-like spirit of collaboration and commitment to Catholic education from the administration and employees, and a sense of wonder
the campus.
Both my short-term as well as my long-term goals will come
as the needs of the school. Although I have great dreams and visions for the future of this Catholic high school, I believe God
through to follow His will. All I want to do is to love and to
school, and to make Christ present in the lives of our students.
Sister Guadalupe Hernandez, SJS will take over as principal of Vincent Memorial Catholic High School. She was previously serving as a principal at Our Lady of Guadalupe School in
always willing to give her best for the service of God, to make Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament known and loved. Sister ‘Lupita’ will continue to have a great vision for Vincent Memorial Catholic High School and for the future of Catholic education in the Imperial Valley.
Pope Benedict XVI, in his address to Catholic school educators
in the United States in 2008 stated that every young person “deserves an education in faith, which in turn nurtures the soul of a nation.” I truly believe in Catholic education. Through the years I have witnessed the miracles that happen everyday in the hearts of people when they acknowledge God’s presence and strive to become Christ-like. I have seen the sparkle in the eyes of Catholic school educators, parents, and students when they realize the dimension of the love of God in their lives. Catholic schools are not only important; they are an essential instrument in the church and our society through which faith and values, along with curricular excellence, genuinely ‘nourish the soul of our nations.’
One of the greatest satisfactions of ministering to high school students is the opportunity I have to witness the awesome transformation of a child into an adolescent, and then a young adult. It is so amazing to share in their passion for life, their desire to succeed, their hunger for God, their questions and answers… even their broken hearts at times. In a world that can so be so challenging, it is so good to try to help students believe that the sky is the limit, and that with God, and holding the hand of our Blessed Mother Mary, anything is possible.

Homecoming is the next night with our Crusaders taking on San Ysidro High School in football at 7 PM, followed by the alumni party in the Bosco Center gym. The 36th Annual Crusader Golf Tournament is on Sunday, October 21, at Bonita Golf Club. More information is available about these and other events by going to the Alumni Portal of the school’s web site. The Alumni Association is here to provide Value, Support and create Loyalty among all Marian/Mater Dei Alumni. If you would like to become more involved or have suggestions for the Alumni Association, please let me know. You can also get information and connect with fellow alumni via our “Marian and Mater Dei Crusaders Alumni Association” page on Facebook. It is a great time to become involved, continue the Crusader tradition and help make a difference.
Truly yours,

The Lady Crusaders softball team had set the bar high with back to back titles in 2010 and 2011. Thus, the quest for the “3 peat“ began. The 2012 season brought great promise with a strong returning presence of seniors and juniors. The sophomore class had a year of experience under its belt and the freshman class brought more promise than in past years. These expectations did not disappoint as the
