NUHS Looking Back, Looking Ahead2012 has been a year of diverse accomplishments atNational University, with 2013 promising even moreexcitement for alumni, students, faculty, and staff. AsDr. DeMatte states in his column, the opportunitiesthat come with change are to be anticipatedand embraced.

The most noteworthy change announced atHomecoming 2012 is the impending retirement ofDr. James Winterstein after 26 years as president ofNational University, and the installation of theinstitutions sixth president, Dr. Joseph Stiefel, currently dean of the College of Professional Studies Florida. The changing of the guard will take placeduring Homecoming 2013, June 20-22.

On October 15, 2012, National University ofHealth Sciences received word that the NaturopathicMedicine Degree Program had received accreditationby the Council on Naturopathic Medicine Education(CNME), after a multi-faceted, multi-year process. Thefirst students were accepted in Fall 2006 and the firstclass graduated in Fall 2009.

Another achievement for National and thenaturopathic program was the hosting of theNaturopathic Gathering of 2012, November 9-11.The Gathering allows ND students from all schoolsto meet with experienced naturopathic physiciansand educational leaders to deepen theirunderstanding of the roots, history and philosophy ofthe profession. The event was an unqualified successfor the professions newest educational program.

Another of National Universitys newer degreeprograms, acupuncture and oriental medicine, addeda milestone to the universitys history and theacupuncture profession in April 2012 with theacceptance of interns from the masters degreeprograms in acupuncture and oriental medicine intoa clerkship program at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital ofCook County of the Cook County Health & HospitalsSystem (CCHHS).

National University proudly announced thatPubMed, the prestigious search engine of theNational Library of Medicine, recently included theJournal of Chiropractic Humanities (JCH) among itsindexed publications. Now all three of the NUHSjournals are indexed in PubMed.

National University now lists five clinics serving thepublic with the grand opening of the NUHS WholeHealth Center Pinellas Park in Florida this pastNovember. This second Florida clinic joins the NUHSWhole Health Center housed in the Caruth HealthEducation Center of St. Petersburg College (SPC),which exclusively serves faculty and students withinthe SPC system.

A new video on the home page of the NUHSwebsite was unveiled in September, presenting a boldnew picture of the Nationals unique strengths inhealth care education. Personal perspectives fromseveral students, faculty and administrators give thevideo a focused and heartfelt message that speaksdirectly to those aspiring to the healing professions.

If you dont like something, change it. If youcant change it, change your attitude.

    Maya Angelou

Yes there is a lot going on this year at NUHS! Iwas discussing with a colleague how excited I wasto have the opportunity of participating in anhistoric occasion bidding farewell with fond

memories and special thanksto one president andenthusiastically welcomingwith full support a newpresident. I have always beenone to embrace change andlook forward to newchallenges and opportunitiesthat come with change.

When I was thinking about the concept ofchange, I recalled the proverb/saying that themore things change, the more they stay the same. When I brought this topic up to a few people aboutwriting an article for the Alumnus, many askedwhy I would want to discuss something negative?I was surprised, as Ive always considered thesaying positive and if nothing else, ratherinsightful. So lets look at some documentedinterpretations of this proverb and aboutchange itself.

According to Wikipedia: Change is the one thingthat we can be sure of; the only thing that isconsistent in life is that nothing is permanent. TheChinese interpretation is somewhat similar making the observation that turbulent changes donot affect reality on a deeper level other than tocement the status quo. Then, there is alsoHeraclitus and Carl Jung who both agree changeand conflict are necessary and normal aspects tohuman existence; to resist change is to resist life.

So change itself is inevitable, and neither positivenor negative by nature, but the outcome of changeis determined by the actions, choices andinterpretations of those involved. Often times, ones level of involvement and commitment tochange provides the foundation for the outcome. Itis analogous to those who complain about whowon or lost an election but never actually voted

  • I was listening to what those who deliver it call thenews last month and the anchor lady said somethinglike people are getting ready for Turkey Day, andmany are already off work for the entire week!People will want to be careful on the roads and blah, blah, blah.

Really? Turkey Day? Why exactly would more andmore people be using this kind of language whenreferring to Thanksgiving Day, a day that had itsbeginning in 1621 yes, that is an American traditionof nearly 400 years and now, people want to refer to itas Turkey Day? How inappropriate, not to mentionthat the informal definition of turkey, is somethingthat is extremely or completely unsuccessful, especially a play or movie, or for that matter a stupidor inept person. (New Oxford American Dictionary)

According toWikipedia, the first Thanksgiving day wascelebrated by 53 pilgrims and 90 American Indiansbecause the colonists were accustomed to regularlycelebrating thanksgiving days of prayer, thanking Godfor blessings.

Thanksgiving Day was made an official holiday in theUnited States in 1863 when President AbrahamLincoln proclaimed a national day of Thanksgivingand Praise to our beneficent Father who dwellethin the Heavens, to be celebrated on Thursday,November 26.

Turkey Day is a long distance from the actions andintentions of the Pilgrims and all those who followed, through Lincolns time and even up through most of

my life until recently when, it seems that people ofthe United States have become too good to givethanks, because doing so might suggest a spiritual orreligious connotation. We have come to the point, farfrom the days of our forefathers, where we haveadopted something we call political correctness, anoxymoron if ever there was one. What about politicstoday seems even remotely correct?

To make matters worse, even before Thanksgiving hasarrived, commercial enterprise and all of the relatedmedia are giving homage to The Holidays! TheHolidays? How about Thanksgiving and Christmas?Nothing about using those terms will negate the beliefsof those who celebrate Hanukkah or Kwanza, but thetraditions related to these special days should notbe thrown away because of an oxymoron calledpolitical correctness.

I would venture to say that if the people of our countryreturned to their spiritual roots, politics in this countrywould look far different from that which we face todaywith a national debt that one cannot even imagine, notto mention the jobless and homeless people in thiscountry. Perhaps once again, people would develop areal work ethic rather than the Europeanization thatcurrently leads to an expectation of more and longervacations. The weekend before Thanksgiving, peopleall over the country were taking the week off becauseof upcoming turkey day! According to Forbes, theaverage American works 25 hours per week (Imaginethat only 25 hours!), but the average Frenchmanworks 18, the Italian a bit more than 16, and even theBritish average only 21 hours per week. Furthermore,Europeans take far more holiday time, with theaverage for Frenchmen being 12 weeks per year!

Whats my point? Well, to me, it appears that peopleare less and less committed to the principles that madeour country great and more committed to time off, getting as much from government as they possibly can,and being politically correct. Where does this leadus? Take a look at Greece, Italy, Spain, if we want to seewhere the United States is headed.

I think it all comes back to Turkey Day andThe Holidays and the attitude we have developedtoward our spiritual celebrations. Our lack ofconcern for religion and spirituality goes hand-in-handwith selfishness.

Well, I have had my say about all of that, but right now,I want to give thanks to all of you who continue tomake National University all that it is.Your support andyour contributions have meant so much to mepersonally during my presidency and so much more tothe success of our alma mater. This Thanksgiving Day,I took time to thank God for all the blessings in mypersonal life and to thank God for all of you, mycolleagues. May your blessings be many.
