Remembering ArthurCharles Arthur Schaefer always knew he was born to be a gardener, even

when the only space he had was in a pair of windows facing west in his oldGreenwich Village apartment in New York. He filled them with a jungle of exoticplants that thrived to the point where they were overflowing.

In the 1970s, he began to spend summers on Nantucket with his life partnerDonn Russell. They purchased land near the center of town and built a cottage atone end and a studio at the other. Arthur immediately set to designing and plot-ting a floral garden area in between. Over the years, his garden was frequentlyphotographed and featured. Schaefer experimented with many varieties of plants, but his roses were the most popular of all.

After he died in 2014 at age 101, his closest friends decided to honor his mem-ory by organizing as a group to beautify public areas downtown. First on the listwas the rose garden with sundial planted in a niche beside the new wing of St.Paul’s Church on Fair Street, where he was a member for over fifty summers.

Last fall, thanks to a donation from Rus-sell, Town Arborist Dave Champoux andcompany worked to beautify another par-cel in memory of Schaefer: property at 86Union Street that The Nantucket LandBank purchased for public use and enjoy-ment from the Glowacki and the Gaillardfamilies. At just over an acre, this land nearConsue Springs is open space with an his-toric horse barn dating back to 1890.Champoux’s team planted flowering cherrytrees, Swamp Maple, lilacs, and 5,000 daf-fodil bulbs.

This April, the daffodils all bloomed, andthe wide swath of bright yellow, orange, and white blossoms near this busy cornerput smiles on many faces of people walk-ing and driving by. Schaefer’s friends arealready calling it “Arthur’s Park.”

NANTUCKET VOICES

Libby Gibson, Growingup on Nantucket

by Rebecca Nimerfroh

You may recognize Libby Gibson’s voice from theweekly updates she does on 97.7 ACK FM, reportingthe latest happenings of the town in that oh-so-re-latable, down-to-earth tone. Or perhaps you havespotted her walking her dog down one of Nan-tucket’s many gorgeous beaches, Libby’s smile al-ways warm and welcoming for a conversation.Having worked in town administration since shewas just twenty-two years old, and having servedas Nantucket’s Town Manager for more than twentyyears, this wash-a-shore certainly knows a thing ortwo about this little island, to the point that its hardto believe we can’t technically call her a native.

“I moved to Nantucket when I was ten,” Libby tells me when I meet with herat her office on Broad Street. It is school vacation week, and although the islandis much quieter than usual, in town it is still bustling with sounds of constructionhumming through her office windows. I came here with the intent not to inter-view her per se, but to hear what Nantucket was like when she first moved to theisland, and how she feels it has changed today.

“My father’s family had a summer home here, so we used to come here everysummer,” Libby says. “We lived in California.” It was in 1977 that her dad andmom, H. Flint and Corky Ranney, decided to move to the island permanently, and packed up the family “in a Volkswagen van with a U-Haul and a dinghy ontop of our car.” The cross-country trip took two weeks, and they arrived just intime for summer, staying at her grandmother’s house on Cliff Road.

When winter came it brought the blizzard of ’77. “It was a summer house, soit was really cold, but we considered it kind of an adventure. My parents, a yearor so later, bought a house in Monomoy and we moved there.” Every summer,

Orion Departingby Robert P. Barsanti

I have walked passed the snow shovels for weeks. One of them dates backinto the eighties, when you could sell shovels that had a teflon coating andwould hold pounds of snow; a shovel for the young man who scorned theNautilus machines from the sweaty, mirrored corner of the gym. The otherhad arrived in the last few years, a shovel of plastic and middle-age, with anoddly placed handle for throwing the snow without twisting a back. Our onestorm this winter threatened feet but left only wet inches. The new shovelbrushed aside the wet snow that the plow had piled while his older, sturdier, and grumpier brother leaned against the side of the house and spit. Both ofthem spent most of their winter days standing and waiting, like DPW workersaround a pothole.

Another year has crept upon us. The last of the New England storms havegone spinning out to sea far to our east leaving the island swept in cold, clear,Canadian air. I spent one afternoon glancing out at the bright sun on the graybranches as they twitched in the throes of the season. Winter still kept me in-side, like an overprotective parent. It was still too cold. It would rain in theafternoon. You hadn’t finished that book yet. You had other work to do. Andso the last year remained trapped inside.

Or preserved inside, as if in amber. A very long time ago, in the midst ofanother winter, one of my colleagues referred to his daytime routine as theBermuda Triangle. He left the house to go to work in the dark, then left work, again in the dark, headed to the grocery store (or Orange Street Video), andreturned to the house and the sofa. Familiarity breeds comfort. Everythingstays the same if you keep to the same streets under the same stars. The deadstill walk among us, patting our hands and smiling.

The stars have moved, however. While my snow shovels maintain theirvigil and the hedges and brush sway in the cold air, Orion has shifted far tothe west. When I leave the house, and the past, with my trash, I see the oldhunter bidding me farewell over the horizon as he heads into someone else’swinter.

French Neutralson Nantucket

by Amy Jennessauthor of On This Day In Nantucket History

Isolated out to sea and staunchly Quaker, and therefore pacifist, Nantucketersnonetheless got pulled into British conflict long before the American Revolution.Island whaleships had to contend with European privateers capturing their ships asearly as 1744. And in 1755, the British forced island residents to take in 34 FrenchCanadians who had been exiled from Nova Scotia.

After decades of escalating tensions between Britain and France over Acadia, which at its largest consisted of Maine and today’s Maritime Provinces, a coalitionof New England ships left Boston for Nova Scotia with soldiers and arms in earlyMay of 1750. By June the men had captured Fort Beausejour. Five years later an-other New England coalition captured Fort Louisburg, and war between France andEngland looked inevitable.

Throughout the first half of the 1700s, the British and New Englanders backedby them, seized portions of Acadia from France; in part for control of their lucrativeresources; in part due their opposition to Roman Catholicism; and in part to pushthe French away from the borders of New England colonies. When the British tookover Nova Scotia in 1713, the treaty allowed ethnic French families to remain thereand British officials asked the French Nova Scotians to sign an oath declaring theirloyalty to the British crown. They refused, saying they preferred to remain neutral.

But by 1755 the British felt the Acadians to be a threat as they prepared to entera global war, with France as the main opponent. Again, the British government de-manded the Acadians give their allegiance to Britain, and again they refused.

Not at all assured of the Acadians’ loyalty, the British government devised anextreme plan – deport and scatter the ancestral French throughout the Americancolonies and England. What began as the deportation of families around the Fortressof Louisburg, turned into the exile of 10,000 Acadian people by the end of the war.

In the first deportation in 1755, the exiles were held under guard for almost amonth and were close to starving to death by the time ships arrived.

Tips for a WinningTailgate Picnic

by Jenny BenzieAdvanced Sommelier + Certified Wine Educator,

Proprietress of Épernay Wine & Spirits

Visitors and summer residents coming to the island for a weekend getawayare jubilant to the prospects of warm sunshine and calm winds. The 42ndAnnual Daffodil Weekend, sponsored by the Nantucket Island Chamber ofCommerce, is a much-anticipated celebration of Spring.

Of the activities planned for the weekend one of the favorites is the Week-end Antique Car Parade and (drumroll, please) The Daffodil Tailgate Picnic.

The charming village of ‘Sconset is the backdrop to this afternoon fête onSaturday, April 30. ‘Sconset’s main street is transformed into the ultimatesmall town soirée with lavish and creative picnic spreads and presentations. All picnics are eligible to win coveted ribbons awarded by the Chamber ofCommerce’s Judging Committee. While most people think you need to havea car in the parade in order to participate in the competition, this is not thecase. There is a separate category for Tailgate Picnic Winner/Non-Car. (TIP:If you plan to participate in this category, make sure to arrive early in ‘Sconsetto set up your tailgate in the best spot for maximum exposure and space.)

What does one need to do in order to be amongst the top ribbon-winningcontenders?

Here is a quick and easy guide to help you in creating your tailgate mas-terpiece, including tips on how to avoid a few road bumps at your ‘SconsetTailgate and get the Judge’s attention for all the right reasons.

To get things started, you will want to come up with an overall theme foryour tailgate party. It cannot be stressed enough how important this is foryour success. Your theme needs to be very specific and direct, not a broadcategory. Everything (and I mean everything) that you create for this tailgatewill focus on coming back to this one major theme that must be consistentthroughout every tiny detail.

Think of it like the parts of a bicycle wheel. There are several parts to a bi-cycle wheel that on their own would probably end up at the Madaket Mall. When well maintained and put together properly, the sum of these pieces willhave you on the ’Sconset Loop bike path in no time to take part in the tailgatefestivities.

The Wheel Itself• Hub: This is the focal point to your overlying theme and the axle that

everything in your tailgate picnic revolves around. • Rim: The circumference of your rim depends on the scope of your tailgate

and will eventually form in the shape of a hoop. In addition to the importantfunction of holding the ‘tire’ (which we discuss later) onto the wheel, the rimalso serves as the anchor for spokes (see below).

• Spokes: The rim is connected to the hub by several spokes, which areimportant critical details that are part of your overall theme, under tension.

While you don’t want to over complicate your tailgating efforts, conven-tional bicycle wheels for single rider bikes commonly have 28, 32 or 36

ISLAND COOKING

Daffy Picnic Food

This year there are two picnics to choose from during Daffodil Festival Sat-urday, April 30. The Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce (the brains andthe brawn behind Nantucket Daffodil Festival Weekend), is hosting a FamilyBeach Picnic at Children’s Beach in addition to the famous ‘Sconset TailgatePicnic. Both start at 12:30 pm, after the Antique Car Parade winds throughtown, but the picnic at Children’s Beach has the benefit of being in walkingdistance from Main Street. All you need for either Daffy event is a blanketand a picnic, plus a camera to photograph all the fun.

Two thousand Acadians ultimately arrived in Massachusetts, the first group inNovember of 1755. Towns in the colony were ordered to take at least one family.Known as the “French Neutrals,” 34 displaced French Nova Scotians arrived on Nan-tucket in December of 1755. They formed five distinct families with the last nameof either Dupee or Breau and ranged in age from 1 to 69 years old. They were des-titute, Roman Catholic, spoke no English and completely dependent on islandersfor their survival.

A year after the “French Neutrals” arrived, Nantucket voters held a town meetingand decided to petition the Massachusetts General Court to refund a portion of theirProvince Tax to offset the financial burden of taking in the Acadians. In his petition,Jonathan Coffin stated the cost to be a little more than 27 pounds for a seven monthperiod. The court approved the tax abatement, as it did for many Massachusettstowns struggling with the same issue.

In 1763, Britain and France signed the Treaty of Paris and ended the Seven YearsWar. In Massachusetts many of the displaced Acadians petitioned the MassachusettsGeneral Court for permission to leave. Some moved to France, some to Quebec, andsome moved to Louisiana. Not many returned to Nova Scotia and fewer still choseto remain in Massachusetts.

The “French Neutrals” were given their own column on census records duringtheir prominence in Massachusetts. The 1764 census reports 13 “French Neutrals”living in Nantucket County. By 1765 the government had stopped tracking them andthose who remained began to assimilate to life in American colonies.

Nantucketers and their ships were also impacted by the conflict between Eng-land and France.

With innovations in whale processing and a dwindling whale population nearby,Nantucket ships began travelling far from home around 1720. With ships stretchedfrom the Arctic Circle to the Caribbean, Nantucket whaleships became a target ofFrench and Spanish privateers. Privateers were government-sanctioned warships –but not attached to a navy - that had permission to disrupt commerce by takingenemy ships and crew. Before the American Revolution, French privateers, whowere perpetually in conflict with the British over Canadian lands, and Spanish pri-vateers, who patrolled Carribean waters, were the ones to watch for. Later, Nan-tucket ships would need to avoid British privateers during the American Revolutionand the War of 1812 and southern American privateers during the Civil War.

Between 1744 and 1747 three Nantucket ships were taken by privateers. In 1746Nantucket captain Zephaniah Pinkham and his crew of 12 Nantucket English menand Native Americans were released from a Canadian jail in exchange for pilotingtwo French ships into Halifax harbor. They were given back their ship and told toreturn to Nantucket by way of the West Indies as a condition of their release.

When it declared war in 1755, the British government expected New Englandmen to enlist, but excused Nantucket because of the island’s predominately Quakerpopulation, which opposed war as part of their religion. Other Massachusetts townswere prohibited from launching boats or fishing the Atlantic Ocean, but Nantucketwhaling, now a global economic powerhouse doing a brisk trade in whale oil prod-ucts with England, was allowed to continue.

In 1756, six of the 80 whaling voyages that left Nantucket that year were raidedand taken by privateers and they continued to harass Nantucket ships until the endof the war in 1763.

Twelve years later Nantucket would again feel the hardship of war during theAmerican Revolution and the pattern would repeat during the War of 1812. But aftereach war Nantucketers doggedly rebuilt their fleets and returned to prowling seasall over the globe in search of whales until the last voyage returned to Nantucket in1870.

Libby’s parents would rent the house to vacationers, and move back to CliffRoad.

Growing up, every one of Libby’s siblings attended Nantucket High School, except for one brother who went to boarding school. Libby remembers fondlytaking the bus to school. “On Cliff Road we had a school bus driven by JackGardner. Jack still fondly remembers picking us up in front of our house. Whenwe moved to Monomoy we had a different bus, and if we missed it, my parentswould say, “If you miss that bus, you’re walking.” But the times we walked youcould probably count on one hand because we would beg and plead and cry,and they would eventually drive us.”

I asked Libby what it was like to grow up on this tiny island. “We didn’t reallyhave that many neighbors, but we had friends all over the island. If you wantedto go to a friend’s house, you could ride your bike or walk there. Winter was alittle quieter then, but over the weekend we would go out to eat. There wasn’tmuch of a choice. The place we would pick would be packed, but it was fun.We saw lots of people that we knew. I think that’s one of the things that I reallylove about Nantucket. No matter where you go, you come across somebodythat you know and you can chat with them.”

As a young girl, Libby asked her parents for a horse and got one. “My poorparents had to build a barn because I decided I really loved horses and couldn’tlive without one.” And Monomoy was the perfect place to have a horse. “There’sa lot of great riding out by the Polpis/Shimmo/Shawkemo area. I can’t imaginedoing that today, if my daughter came home and said she wanted a horse. There’s no way – we couldn’t do it in our neighborhood. And it’s expensive, butit was a really nice thing to have growing up.”

Asked for the difference between her upbringing and that of her kids, Libbysays, “We rode our bikes every where. I guess kids ride their bikes now, but if Isaid to my kids that they had to ride their bikes to Tom Nevers they would say‘no way, its too far.’ My best friend lived in Tom Nevers and we rode our bikesto each other’s house all the time. Unless it was some kind of circumstancewhere my parents were going out there anyway, which was quite unlikely, youhad to ride your bike.”

Growing up, Libby’s father took great joy in one particular possession – anantique fire truck. But how he got this fire truck to the island was a whole entire

story unto itself. Fresh fromtheir wedding in California,Libby’s mom and dad, dressedin their traveling suits custom-ary for the time, picked up thetruck from New Bedford asthey made their way to Nan-tucket for their honeymoon. Itwas just as they crossed thebridge over the Cape CodCanal that the truck over-heated and seized, so theycoasted their way to the bottom of the bridge, and Libby’s mother stayed withthe car while her dad sought out the nearest service station. The sight of thesehoneymooners and the broken down fire truck caused such a commotion onthe Cape that a write up even made its way into a local paper. Libby recalls hermother in that situation. “She was like, “I can’t believe this is happening. Thisis SO embarrassing.” Libby laughs. “We still laugh about it. She probably doesn’tthink its that funny, even today.”

But it was the fire truck that was the source for many fun summer memories.“It mostly went from Wauwinet to ‘Sconset. On the way there was a sort ofswampy area where my dad would sometimes fill up the water tank and sprayeverybody with the hose. But it was big fun to go to ‘Sconset in the summertime and get ice cream from the ‘Sconset Bookstore, which is now a liquor store. It was sort of like a drug store then. There was a lunch counter and they hadbooks and magazines and ice cream.”

The fire truck, inherited by Libby’s brother Rob Ranney, still makes its occa-sional debut over Daffodil Festival, but Libby warns that if you are riding in it,you better bundle up. “It’s really windy up there,” she says, “and really loud.”

When Libby was in tenth grade, she got her first job at the Nantucket BakeShop. “I worked with Valerie and Richard Perry. We tasted everything! Thatwas an interesting experience. And then I worked at Young’s Bike Shop formaybe four summers.” Young’s Bike Shop was almost a family tradition, withher brothers working there too, and these days her nephew as well.

After attending Wheaton College, Libby found herself back home for the sum-mer. There was a job in the town building – an administrative assistant positionin the Board of Selectman’s Office. “I thought, well, why don’t I try that. I can

spokes (or details as in your case). You may choose to have fewer detailsthat would result in an aerodynamic advantage (as you race to collect yourribbon). However, a reduction in the number of components would result ina larger section of the ‘rim’ being unsupported, which would require astronger, bolder, and heavier border to your theme. Spokes distributed evenlyacross the circumference of the rim are considered more durable and forgiv-ing as they hold the theme of the tailgate together. Some wheel designs alsolocate the spokes unequally into the rim, but do create an overall balance.

Examples of spokes could include, but not limited to:• Music/playlist and how it is performed or amplified• The vessel in which you are cooling/serving your liquid refreshments• Use of a tent/pergola/umbrella that envelopes your staging area• Seating options (if you choose to offer this, it MUST be part of your overall

experience incorporated into your theme• Themed games• Food spread presentation and any on-site cooking demonstrations• Additional flooring options other than the green grass

The TireThis is what will help you to keep the momentum of your tailgate at what-

ever speed you choose and enable you to combat any unforeseen terrainahead. By itself, the “tire” is incapable of holding air. It is open in the centerand has two edges that allow it to be mounted onto the “rim,” which holdsthe outlying details together. But you can’t pull off a winning tailgate withoutit to protect your event and enable better tailgating performance.

A perfect example is to consider what type of drinking vessels will you beusing. While Mason jars look cute, they are heavy and can sweat in the palmof someone’s hand when filled with a cold beverage. When that jar slips outof your favorite cousin’s hand and shatters all over Main Street in ‘Sconset, the smashing sound of it hitting the pavement will draw eyes to your partyfor all the wrong reasons.

Winning Tailgate Picnicfrom page 8

Avoid this type of mishap by using Govino glasses. These reusable, recy-clable and shatterproof drinking cups are perfect for tailgating. They comein various styles and sizes, making their products available for whatevertheme and drinks you have chosen.

TIP: Use the Govino glasses at your next Nobadeer Beach Bonfire or givethem as a gift to your guests for them to remember your winning day at the2016 Daffodil Picnic Tasting Awards.

Also keep in mind that the weather on the Grey Lady is sometimes unfor-giving to your best laid plans. Make sure to have a back up plan for highwinds (batten down the hatches) or the sprinkle of a rain shower that willcause your decorations (and perhaps your spirits) to melt. The Inner Tube:

Consider this to be the life of the party. This is the air that makes your tail-gate picnic breathe and come to life, which includes the people who are partof your event. It is very important that everyone in your group is on the samepage and part of the master plan. Otherwise, that one small “hole” can causethe entire event to deflate.

Be the congenial host or hostess when the judges or others come to lookat what you have created and explain to them all the inner workings of yourartistry. Sharing a splash of vino or a morsel of food will help to create good-will and hopefully more votes!

Lastly, here are some key points to remember for the end of your tri-umphant tailgate event.

• Recycle: Be sure to dispose of all your glass bottles, cans, & plastic wearaccordingly.

• Pack it in, Pack it out. Remember to bring trash bags (and perhaps a dis-creet trash bag container that follows your theme) in order to dispose ofwaste responsible. These will make it much easier for your tailgate clean up,when all your friends have headed home for a nap, and will help you keepyour area spic and span when the judges come through.

Whatever your theme, remember the most important thing is to be con-sistent throughout each part of the tailgate party, including costumes (hatsoptional), types of libations, food selections and decor. This is where havinga narrow focus on the road in front of you is much more advantageous thana wide lens looking at all the scenery on the way to the winner’s podium.

THE BEST DEAL IN TOWN!ENTERTAINMENT THURSDAY FRIDAY, & SATURDAY NIGHTS

The deer have crept up as well. The season has warmed them and broughtthem out to chew on the green and the juicy in the backyard. They stare atme in blank and uncomprehending glares, as if I were a pick-up truck bearingdown on them on the road. I make a lunge at them, but they stay right wherethey are. The only animals who have filled out the island more than the con-tractors and realtors are deer, ticks, and seals. We work hard making this is-land a better place for the deer to graze and breed. Long after the lastmahogany banister has warped and rotted and the Belgian block drivewayhas worn down to thousand dollar sand, there will be deer stepping throughthe hedges to chew on the leftover bark of imported magnolias and wildarugula.

The season changes with a slow and vegetative power, pushing throughthe pleasant torpor of a long gray winter with the fierce insistence of yellow. The daffodils follow the crocuses, opening the door for the forsythia, the tulips, and the summer. They have shoved through the brown grass and the grayfallen branches with staccato bursts. And it’s spring. Ready or not.

We emerge into a Nantucket Spring, which is unlike the season that mostof the world knows. A Nantucket Spring wears polar fleece and runs thewindshield wipers through the fog. It shakes the mud off of its work bootsand looks out at the looming blue wall on the horizon. The season sings oncellphones, with calls coming in from 860, 212, and 617 area codes and goingdirect to voice mail. We paint the days in a light brown; the fresh look of newlyinstalled cedar shingles, the newly dug sand of a fresh foundation, and thetint of four by fours holding up another viewing stand for the realtors; “yourmaster bedroom will look out here and capture the sound like this…”

Dreams bloom as lushly as the daffodils. The island, it appears, needs morecarpenters and more landscapers; more bakers and more bartenders. Youcan’t throw a brick without hitting a ten dollar sandwich or a fifteen dollarcocktail. Bright new pickups trucks line up for coffee and a shiny minivantaxis, without dents, scratches, or odors, stand ready at the ferry docks. Everyboat brings new dreams, and they all have haircuts, handshakes, and ham-mers.

On Saturday, the wind died, the fog stayed away, and summer peered inand touched seventy. The hedges burned green, as did all of the skeletal back-yard branches in the slow vernal fire. Last year slowly was consumed, oneshoot at a time, one sign at a time, one life at a time. We hold it in our heartsand in our minds, then watch it pace away, over the western horizon.

The new year is quick within and without. The island hums and wiggleswith a new start. The time for wide shovels is over. Now, we need rakes andmowers, wheelbarrows and spades. It bursts out in sap and song, in fire andflower, and the same hills and paths fill with a renewed life. Soon, we will bein t-shirts and shorts, cursing Buchholz and hoping for Papi under the newsun. The routes change and the triangle fades into ice cream, beaches, andjob sites.

On that same warm Saturday, I stopped by Cisco Beach for the first time inthe new year. Out on the water, a kite surfer skipped over the waves. Hecaught the bare edge of control, just at the top of an incoming breaker, andthen rode high into the wind, only to settle far out to sea on another wave.He kept skipping back and forth, between the crush of the surf and the free-dom of the gust. As the sun set and a faint full moon rose in the east, he keptracing at the edge of time.

stay here, I can live at home, pay some tiny amount of rent, save some money and figure out what I want to do.”

It was on her very first day that a handsome manstormed into her office, demanding to see the ExecutiveSecretary. “I was like, “Ok, who are you?” and he sort ofdidn’t think he needed to tell me who he was, and he didn’tthink I would really be here that long anyway, because therehad been a lot of turn over in the office.” The man eventu-ally did tell her who he was, that his name was Charlie Gib-son, and after fixing a radio in her car, he asked Libby outto dinner. They went to the Atlantic Café for their first date.“I am so sorry it’s not still there,” Libby says. “It was such agreat place. We used to reenact our first date every nowand then, but we can’t do that anymore.” Libby and Charliegot married in 1992 at the Nantucket Yacht Club, just stepsfrom where they met on that fateful day in the Town Build-ing.

As for her job, Libby says, “I really liked it. I became veryinterested in how the government works and functions andbeing involved in what’s happening, and sort of helpingmake things happen. In 1990 the executive secretary left, and I became the assistant, and in 1995 I became what wasthen called the Town Administrator. In 2007, the titlechanged to Town Manager, so I just sort of moved along thechain. I just hope to keep doing it for as long as I can, for aslong as it keeps working for all of us, which hopefully it is.”

Not that being Town Manager doesn’t have its chal-lenges. “It seems more goes on here than in other towns. Most other towns don’t have a nursing home. A lot oftowns don’t have a landfill, or two sewer treatment plants. No towns have their own county.” She says that the uniquething about Nantucket is that the town has to work with somany other departments, and those relationships are cru-cial to proper function. “We all have to work together to get

it done. That’s nice in a lot of ways, but it’s challenging ina lot of ways.”

One notable change in the town building since Libbystarted, all politics aside, is the smoking, or lack thereof. “Itwasn’t even that long ago. But you could never imaginethat today. The walls were yellow. It was really bad.” Libbyrecalls how the desk she inherited as Town Manager stillhad a giant burn mark on the side from an un-extinguishedcigarette that lit a trash can on fire many years back. Inabout the year 2000 Libby finally got a new desk, and shesmiles, her hands flat on the surface in front of her, “I lovemy new desk.”

These days, Libby and Charlie are the proud parents oftwo children and a recently adopted dog, because of whomthey have been finding themselves outside for long walksalong the beach or dirt paths. Nantucket’s meandering dirtroads have always been special to Libby, dating back towhen she was young and she and her siblings would askher dad to turn down a random dirt road, just to see whereit would go. “We really loved this “roller coaster” roadwhich was out by Altar Rock. Sometimes, back then, theroad would turn into more of a path, and we thought thatwas so cool. That stuff you kind of can’t do so much anymore, because development has occurred. But my kidssometimes still say, “Let’s go down this dirt road and seewhere it goes,” especially if they haven’t been down it be-fore.”

One of Libby’s favorite things about Nantucket, she says,is that you can go anywhere in the world and you will mostlikely find someone with a Nantucket connection. “I’ve runinto people that I know in Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos,Canada… You can almost always find somebody who hassome type of Nantucket connection, which is really cool.”

Although Libby’s father passed away in 2012, her motherstill lives in their home in Monomoy, and most of Libby’ssiblings either reside on the island or come back often tovisit. Libby says, “I loved growing up here, and I wouldn’ttrade it for anything.“

It takes some special enticements to draw us out of our regular Sundayroutine, so we rarely go out for brunch. But we had houseguests last week-end who wanted to dine out one more time before their early afternoon de-parture, so shortly after at 11 am we headed into town to Proprietors.

It was a sunny, quiet April morn-ing, so we weresurprised at thenumber of guestsinside when we en-tered the restau-rant. Clearlyeveryone else onNantucket had got-ten the memo be-fore we did:Proprietors wasbustling! We were

settled at a table in the cozy front dining room and started to read over themenu.

This brunch menu was like nothing we’d seen on-island before for a morn-ing or even a mid-day meal. We could see Chef Michael LaScola’s touchthroughout: local produce, international flair, intriguing combinations, arti-san ingredients, and lots of surprises. Eggs are offered: with etouffee or withred beans or in a kim chee omelette or mini quiches. The granola, frieddough, and Johnny cakes each have special ingredients or sauces. Even thegrilled bagels deserve special mention: they’re made fresh for Proprietors byCaleb Cressman using Iranian wheat.

With Chef Michael and Orla LaScola at the helm we were confident thatwhatever we chose would be delicious. After all, this is the team that broughtrousing success to American Seasons for more than a decade before theymoved on last year to open Proprietors. And we were right! About half thebrunch menu is devoted to patron favorites; the other half changes every Sun-

day. Chef LaScolatold us that hetasks his cooks atevery station to de-vise a new brunchdish every week.“It gets them ex-cited to be up earlyon a Sunday,” andit clearly excites hispatrons to comeout on a Sunday.

We chose a mixof the regular offer-

ings and the inspired choices. TheMaple Chili Chicken Wings aremoist and meaty in a deliciouslycrunchy coating tossed with a sweetand savory sauce and topped with chilipeanuts and cilantro. The NantucketOyster Chowda is, hands down, thebest oyster chowder we’ve evertasted! The rich and butter broth ischock full of tender oysters, bacon, po-tato, and leeks, with delicious gar-nishes of picked onion and lemonconfit. Two fluffy bite-size biscuits areserved on top.

The Prop’s “Po Boy” is the biggest, best breakfast sandwich you canimagine, with slices of bacon, friedeggs, and pickle slices over pimentocheese and fried green tomatoes. It’sserved with hot and salty steak fries.

The impressively light Johnny Cakeswe savored were served stacked withhousemade breakfast sausage, egg yolk jam, and ramp creme fraiche. Thedish was a delightful mix of sweet and savory. After the Oyster Chowda, ourbrunch favorite for this visit was the Pulled Chicken Étouffée with PoachedEggs. The pulled chicken in a cajun curry gravy is served over black pepperbiscuits. The eggs are perfectly poached, and the yolks add their rich flavorto the étouffée.

Proprietors bartenders make asuperb Bloody Mary rimmedwith salt and Old Bay, but ifyou’re after something a little dif-ferent with brunch, GM AnnaWorgess recommends theKumquat Cordial + ChoyaUmeshu + Prosecco with An-gostura bitters, which she de-scribes as “a fancy Mimosa.”Another option is to “ChooseYour Own Adventure,” a specialrecipe 888 Brunch Punch with El-derberry + Echinacea infusedHurricane Rum + Elderflower +Orange + Soda that can be or-dered singly or for the wholetable.

Brunch at Proprietors was aperfect marriage of breakfast and

lunch, and we knowwhere we’re going onMother’s Day.

Just a few eveningslater, we headed back toProprietors bar & table fordinner, with great antici-pation after the fabulousbrunch. This time wewere seated in “The GreenRoom” — our favorite spot, past the long bar and sur-rounded by tall windows.Proprietors is much largerthan it looks from its en-trance on India Street. Two separate dining areas,

a bar that seats a dozen or so (manned by two bartenders), a couple of hightops, and a romantic dining nook occupy the first floor. There are more tablesin the rooms upstairs that wrap around the central chimney. Even with allthat space, reservations are recommended at this popular Nantucket eatery!

With some guidance from Gail, our expert server, we chose a selection of6 hot and cold small plates to start. Chef LaScola has designed the dinnermenu at Proprietors to make it temptingly easy to order an assortment ofdishes to share. Of the more than 26 dishes (plus nightly specials), only abouthalf a dozen could be considered “entrees.” We love trying new dishes, so ataste of everything is our favorite way to eat out.

Freshly made bread is offered to diners, and while we would never suggestyou not accept it, we do recommend you order the Fried Sour Dough onthe menu. This is Proprietors’ savory version, with dill and onion and servedpiping hot with sour cream. Another fun bite that straddles the line betweenbar snack and appetizer are Smoked Cod Churros. These crisp twirls areserved with crumbled egg, fried capers, herbs, and malt vinegar (a decon-structed tartar sauce), and are great with a cool glass of Six Point Crisp IPA.

We were completely wowed by the Roasted Carrot Hummus. Vibrant incolor and in flavor, we started by timidly dipping the warm pita bread paintedwith curry into the hummus, and ended up eating the sweet and savory mixof chick peas and carrot by the spoonful.

Each time we dine where Chef LaScola is in the kitchen, we order any foiedish on his menu, sweet or savory—foie fans will love whatever this chef cre-ates! On the current menu it’s a chilled Fois Gras & Chicken Liver Pate

Tart. The pate is mild yet flavorful in a thin, flaky crust and topped with adollop of beer and shallot jam and a spring salad of baby greens, dill, paperthin slices of radish, plump English peas and fava beans, and julienne carrot. The fresh flavors of the vegetables are not overpowered by the light paté, andthey add a delightful textural contrast.

Chef LaScola’s Crispy Tunawas a table favorite. Sushi-style but definitelynot sushi. The fresh tuna is wrapped not in nori but in kataifi, that whencooked forms a deliciously light and crispy coating much tastier than sea-weed. To keep the sushi analogy, each slice is topped with bright orange uni, sprinkled with ground nori, and garnished with cucumbers marinated in ricewine. (Suggested Pairing: LLopart Rose Cava)

We’ll be back again for the Crispy Rock Shrimp. This is a simple yet bril-liant dish. The plump fried shrimp are in a crunchy but not bready coatingwith chili miso dressing. They’re served on avocado seasoned with nori fu-rikake. Like most of the dishes served here, it’s great for sharing, but if youare dining withmore than two,you might wantto double thisorder. (Sug-gested Pairing:Livio FellugiaPinot Gris)

We continuedthe adventurewith another ir-resistibly tastyseafood dish:Chicken FriedTrout, a fishand a prepara-tion not oftenserved on Nan-tucket. Weadored it! The trout is cut thick enough that it remains moist and flaky underthis Southern style breading. It’s served over a creamy Green Goddess dress-ing, and a pickled onion topping adds just the right bright twang of acidity.(Suggested Pairing: Voss Sauvignon Blanc)

Every element on the Faroe Island Salmon dish comes together to createa stellar entree. The salmon is served rare with crispy skin on a bed of heav-enly smoked potato fondant surrounded by a drizzle of a light spring peacreme fraiche. Spring ramps, pickled rhubarb, and crunchy buckwheatquinoa crisp are the tasty garnishes. (Suggested Pairing: Loring Pinot Noir)

Chef LaScola has a reputation for turning pork into remarkably satisfyingdishes. His house-made charcuterie and his pig ear fries are patron favorites. To the list we’ll add his Suckling Pig Confit. We liked every aspect of thisdish, from the hearty, slightly smoky ancho chili broth to the bourbon-soakedprunes and toasted cornbread crumble. Crisp on top, the pork is tender andsucculent and very much the centerpiece of a superbly designed dish. (Sug-gested Pairing: Hitachino Nest White )

We’ve never had shortribs the way LaScola prepares them in his ShortribBeef & Broccoli. Cooked sous vide and finished on the grill, the beef isserved sliced and has the rich flavor of a ribeye and the supreme tenderness

of a slowcooked shortrib. The broccoli is as good as the beef, with umamiflavor and a tinge of smoky char. Gingered turnip puree and a red-eye gravymake a delicious East-West finish, and the final touch is a cloud of flavor, otherwise known as deep fried beef tendon. (Suggested Pairing: Mongrano San-giovese)

With so many tantalizing starters, you have to purposely save room fordessert at Proprietors. If you’ve forgotten, you can always end with a cocktail, and for this Anna recommends their Espresso Martini (which by summerwill be barrel-aged) or one of their great selection of hard-to-get JapaneseSingle Malt Whiskies, including the Hibiki 17yr. and the Yamazaki 18yr.

But if you did leave a little room for dessert, you’ll want to try Pastry ChefLydia DiPerrio’s Lemon Meringue DIG or her Flourless Chocolate Cake.Served layered in a jar—tart-sweet lemon curd, meringue, raspberry-red winejam, and crunchy buttermilk crumbles—DIG is just what you’ll want to dowith your spoon. The Flourless Chocolate Cake is served in rectangles(which makes it easy to share) with a luscious molasses ice cream and coffeeganache, topped with a twisty caramel barley chip.

We can tell that Chef Michael LaScola is reveling in the culinary freedomoffered by this menu. We love his playful dishes and his solid classics, bothat brunch and at dinner. Welcome back and thank you for yet another reasonto celebrate springtime on Nantucket!
