April 21, 2012

Dear Fellow Historians, {April 21, 2012 in Midland}

Where does the time go? We were just in Pecos in October and

here it is April and time for another historic PHS meeting. It

will be at the Petroleum Museum in Midland beginning at 9:00

a.m. with breakfast treats frequently known as “Happy Hour.”

Then comes the board meeting while guests visit & partake of

refreshments. The dress up theme for the meeting will be “Law

& Outlaw.” Dress as one or the other or even a saloon girl who

can’t decide on whom to choose. Won’t that be fun?

Speakers lined up for the day are: Barbara Barton who will do a

power point presentation on the School Marm, Nora Locklin;

Wiley Dabbs who will bring us stories on the Babb family from

the Judge Roy Bean area; Patrick Dearen will bring us highlights

from his book on the Devil’s River; Scott Jordan will tie the Per-

main Basin counties and stories together with his presentation

on the Texas Historic Pecos Trail; and finishing out the presen-

tations will be Kathy Shannon from the Petroleum Museum in

Midland. Doesn’t that sound like a fantastic program?

It will be time to elect or re-elect officers for the next biennium.

Betty Cash has asked to step down to be able to devote more

time to her position as Chairman of the Pecos County Historical

Commission. The other members have agreed to remain in of-

fice. This will be voted on at the business meeting which will be

held right after lunch—-so don’t rush off before voting. There

will be nominations taken from the floor so if you have someone

you wish to see as an officer on the board please stand and

nominate.

Lunch will be provided by the Bakers of Stanton. It will be $12

per plate, but well worth it. Mark you calendars now & come to

Midland & pre-register. Peggy Kelton

to a theme. It raises interest and provides fun. You Know, History can be fun!

You authors bring your books to sell. There will be a table set up for Book Sellers. 10% of

sales goes to PHS.

NOTICE: Those paying for lunch in advance ($12) to Peggy Kelton will go to the

front of the line to eat; those registering via e-mail ($12) will be second and those

NOTICE

**************************************************************************************

“NEW” ENFORCED RULES ON DUES: It has become very confusing when people pay their past

due dues in Oct. and some pay next year’s dues in Oct. When the treasurer makes a mistake on

what year you were paying some folks get angry. SO: in the PHS by-laws it states that all dues for

the year are due January 1 of that year. At the end of January those who have not paid will be taken

off the roll. Money will be saved on postage for newsletters, post cards and annuals. This may not sit

well with some, but it will certainly help the staff keep better records which will be to the advantage

of all. Please try to follow the rules.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The Petroleum Museum is located at 1500 W I-20 in Midland, TX. It is right off the

Interstate/Rankin/Lamesa Hwy. Follow the oil derricks & pump jacks. Those attend-

ing the PHS meeting are invited to visit the museum right after the great lunch and

business meeting. They are renovating and enlarging and one can see what is there

now & what the future holds. Donations are graciously accepted. They have many ac-

tivities during the year for young folks on through mature adults. Many of the activi-

ties for the children are hands on which is a great way to learn. Join the museum and

receive notices via mail of all activities. They also have a fantastic archive and re-

searchers are welcome to come search and research. There is also a very nice gift store

with many articles pertaining to oil, fossils and recycling. Come visit the museum.
