Quote of the Issue:
“Championships are not won unless a team has forged a
high degree of unity, attainable only through the
selflessness of each of its players.”

SLU opens conference with epic win
Last weekend the Saints traveled to Saratoga
Springs to take on their conference opponents
Skidmore College. The last time the two teams
had met Skidmore defeated St. Lawrence
University in double overtime by a score of 1-0.
“It was a tough pill to swallow”, said Head Coach
Franco Bari, “The team was prepared however
Skidmore capitalized on a great opportunity”. This
year, however, the table had turned as the Saints
returned to Skidmore with a new game plan. “Our
experience from last year taught us the importance
of being resilient and working hard to accomplish
our goals”, said Bari. After end to end action in
regulation, both teams faced a similar situation to
that of last year, however in the second overtime
Senior Elena Rogers doubled back to strip the
ball from a Skidmore opponent and found Junior
Stephanie Sayward with a precise through ball.
Sayward then caught the goalkeeper off of her line
and buried a shot from 20 yards out. This was the
first St. Lawrence University win over the
Thoroughbreds on over 5 years and the Saints
have extended their unbeaten streak to 4 games
while securing a shutout the past 3. The Saints
will meet Conference opponents Bard College and
Vassar College this weekend on Sandy
MacAllister Field.

Saints take over the world This past Spring & Summer seven of
our Saints went on adventures with
the Study Abroad Program to some
pretty amazing places. Abby van
Geldern travelled to Ethiopia while
Devon Shatkin & Marcelle Justison
explored Kenya. Andrea Strauss
studied in Quebec, France, and
Senegal as Lou Lou Wheeler
journeyed to Spain. Katherine Polido
and Betsy Lucas traveled a different
direction. Polido toured the country of
New Zealand while Betsy navigated
through India. When asked about her
experience in Spain Lou Lou said,
“My experience in Spain was
absolutely spectacular; living with a
Spanish family, completely immersed
in the culture and speaking only
Spanish was both challenging and
extremely rewarding. I could not have
asked for a better overall abroad
experience.”
Lou Lou Wheeler
Polido said about her trip, “New
Zealand was an amazing experience
for me. I met a lot of people & did a
lot of things I’ll never forget.
Hopefully it was the first of many
adventures abroad.” Katherine Polido
One of the more popular programs offered
at St. Lawrence University is the program
to Kenya. “The Kenya abroad semester
challenged my perception of reality,
exposing me to a variety of East African
cultures where my constants and
certainties were expressed differently,
entirely irrelevant to their way of life or
elusive privileges”, said Devon “I was
continually thrust out of my comfort zone
and required to rely only on myself, an
experience I inevitably grew from and am
forever grateful for.”
Overall this was a great learning
experience for the saints that they’ll carry
with them throughout their lives. Devon Shatkin
SLU Soccer Supports
Canton Pee Wee On Sunday September 11
th, 2011
St. Lawrence Universities men’s
and women’s soccer teams spent
the afternoon/evening with the
local Canton Pee Wee
Organization. Between 80 and 90
youth soccer players from the area
attended the clinic. The first
session was held by the men’s
soccer team, and the second
session was held by the women’s
soccer team. The sessions were
split up into four groups where
they worked on different skills
with the players. Activities ranged
from shooting, dribbling, passing
etc. with some fun games mixed
in. Both the college players and
Canton Pee Wee players had a
blast at this event. There was a
balance between skill training and
exciting competition. The
feedback from the players,
coaches, and parents was all very
positive. St. Lawrence looks
forward to holding the event
again!

There are quite a few things about Stephanie Sayward
that many people know while there are many things that
we do not. Aside from being a student at St. Lawrence
University, a member of the campus EMS, the St.
Lawrence University Women’s Soccer team’s leading
scorer, Stephanie is also a person with a big heart. This
past summer, Steph embarked on a trip of a lifetime.
“Soccer without borders is a non-profit organization that
uses soccer as a vehicle for positive change in the lives
of marginalized youth”, said Sayward, “Going to
Guatemala, our mission is to provide the children with
physical opportunities such as soccer, while providing
them with an opportunity to play and learn from other
experiences”. After coaching at the UNH soccer camp,
Sayward met a representative of the organization who
spoke with Sayward about the opportunity. When asked
what motivated her to get involved Steph explained,
“It’s something different, I like volunteering, I’ve
volunteered my entire life and with soccer especially, I
have benefited a lot from soccer and I have learned a lot
of life lessons through it. I would like to give someone
else that experience”. Along with providing the
community with strong mentorship, Sayward also
played on a local soccer team and built many strong
relationships along the way.
Sayward sponsored a fundraising event at St. Lawrence
University by hosting a small sided 3 v 3 soccer
tournament for the students to participate in. Over 50
SLU students were in attendance for the event.
Donations went towards funds created to support the
Guatemala children.
