MARCH MRS NE'WBLETTER
APRIL MEETING
Friday, April 6, 1984 1:00 PM Room 225, Smith Hall

The highlight of the March meeting, along with the annual elections, was the presentation of the first MRS Honorary Lifetime Membership to Del Jones. This was voted on by the membership present at the meeting and passed with flying colors. Del also received a brass plaque of the state of Minnesota with the words ItThanks From MRS" on it, and a portrait of him with the MHS logo alongside him. This painting was by st. Paul artist Perry LaBelle and included one of Del's favorite animals, a Barking Tree Frog. This painting had been earlier commissioned by the MRS Board. The best part was that Del had suspected none of this, and was taken completely by surprise. As one who has worked closely with Del since MRS got going, I would like to say he certainly deserved all of this, and probab~y more. I recall many late night phone calls to him as I struggled to get the Newsletter done in time to clarify this and that. And of course, I always got what I needed! The new· list of MRS Officers appears below.

Liz Bosman then mentioned a Desert Iguana (Dipsosaurus dorsalis) that she had had for some time that was discovered in its cage all puffed up and inflated Once she picked it up it immediately deflated. The lizard seems fine and none of its cagemates have shown this .. The lizard in question is ~. of 4"
Ted Schaeve then brought up a technique for catching African Rock Pythons (Python sebae) that he had read about .. Necessary items for this incl'ude palm oil or coconut oil, a pair of long pants, and a sharp knife. A pythen is tracked to its hole through sand or loose dirt .. Once the hole is located, the long pants are soaked in oil, put on and one leg is put down the hole. The snake is then purported to start swallowing the The knife is held along the thigh, and when the snake swallows up that far, its mouth and th!l?oat are slit open, and the snake dies is then pulled out of the hole, taken back to the village, and eaten. if anyone out there has a nonfeeding African Hock Python it might be a good idea to soru{ a rat in palm or coconut oil?

is once again. At the March meeting we adopted out Snake (Storeria 0 occipitomaculata) that had emerged early
from hibernation into a local home", We also had (and still do) 5 Bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) that were donated to MRS through the courtesy of State Parm Insurance. These are all from California and were flown in for state Parm's "Leap Frog Daysn metro frog jumping contest .. The sex ratio is 1 .. 4. We have found a home for 1.1, but still have 3 females that need homes. Can you help? If you can help, please give Jim Gerholdt a call If these can be placed prior to the April meeting, the will be waived As of right now there are no other animals available this will likely change

up monitering programs to help assess the rarity
states use four or five catagories in their
monitering. These catagories are generally: Endangered, Threatened, Status
UndeterMined, and Special Concern. The criteria is different in each state,
but the s ies assigned to the first two catagories are generally known to
be declining and need of protection. The species in the latter two cata
gories are those species that need mor information as to their true status.
might be species that are peripheral in the state, highly secretive,
or of concern for other reasons.
The s around minnesota, including Illinois, Iowa, Michigan,
ska, North Da , South Dakota, and Wisconsin are all at various
stages of Monitering and protecting rare species. All of these states
adopted the federal Endangered Species Act of 1973 and, with the
exceptions of Nebraska and North Dakota, have formulated state lists and
protection measures All the states with endangered species laws, with the
exception of Minnesota which is presently developing regulations, allow for
taki of species for educational, scientific, and captive breeding
under a permit system. The permit does not allow for the sale of the
s mens.
The lists below are of the eight states listed above, with North
Dakota's being unofficial. If you find yourself on vacation or collecting
in one of states make sure you obtain the proper permits. Most states
