From the President Mikki Shafer
With the recent news of Eaton closing the Hastings
plant by July 2022, the Chamber along with Eaton
Corporation, HEDC and the City of Hastings will be
developing a plan to actively help the displaced
employees find employment. Several businesses
have already reached out to the Chamber office
wanting to know who to contact about offering jobs
to these employees. Our first priority is to help Eaton
Corporation in any way they need us to and then to help their employees
stay here in Hastings at comparable wages. When more details are
finalized, we will let the membership
know how they may be able to help
as well. Your Chamber membership
is so much more than just a social
networking opportunity, it gives your business access to resources
beyond your type of industry needs. Whether you’re opening a business,
expanding your business, or looking to sell your business, the Chamber
staff has the knowledge and connections with the right people to keep you
moving forward.

This past Monday, the Governor announced the expiration of
the state-DHM at 11:59 pm Monday night, May 24, 2021, and the
termination on June 1, 2021, of his executive orders related to the
pandemic. What does this mean for the business community? It
means there is some return to normalcy. Social events, celebrations,
and public gatherings will start to come back. I know the Chamber
staff has been busy booking events, planning for our upcoming
events and sharing information on community events with people
who are calling the office wanting to come to Hastings to attend
these events. If your business has something that you want us to
help publicize, please contact Heiden to get started.
One of our much-anticipated upcoming events is the Ribbon
Cutting for the new addition to the Chamber Development Center. A
Business after Hours to follow. This addition has been a long-awaited
dream for so many people and we are now able to CELEBRATE this
accomplishment. So save Thursday, August 12th on your calendar
to come and celebrate with us.

HASTINGS — Mary Lanning
Healthcare is one of only
four hospitals in Nebraska
and just 455 in the nation
to receive a five-star
rating for 2021 from Hospital
Compare, part of the U.S. Centers
for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Quality Initiative.
CMS scores hospitals on nearly 60 quality measures in five categories. CMS
began to report an overall star rating on hospitals in July 2016. It is one of
several report cards on hospitals done nationwide.
Eric Barber, MLH President & CEO, said the five-star rating illustrates a
commitment to quality by the entire MLH staff.
“This ranking shows that we have a staff that is truly engaged and
working constantly to create the best patient experience possible in a safe
environment,” Barber said.
CMS created its quality rating system to help consumers, their families and
caregivers compare hospitals more easily and help identify areas in which
consumers may want to ask questions.
Megan Marble, MLH Director of Quality Services, said MLH, a non-
profit, independent hospital, has always represented high-quality
standards to the community and region. So, she said, it should come
as no surprise that MLH ranks highly with CMS.
“At Mary Lanning, we are working continuously to improve processes
and create relationships with our patients and their families,” Marble
said. “Whatever we can do to make a stay in the hospital easier, safer
and less stressful, we will do it. Everyone here is committed to high
standards and great care.”
Of the 4,586
hospitals nationwide
eligible for a star
rating 455, received
five stars; 988
received four stars;
1,018 received three
stars; 690 received
two stars and 204 received one star. PUBLISHED MAY 4, 2021
MLH named a CMS ‘five-star hospital’

Adams County 4-H Livestock Auction
Monday, July 19, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. Registration: 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
Auction: 9:00 a.m. Location: Livestock Arena Adams Co. Fairgrounds, Hastings, NE Species: Beef, Sheep, Swine, Goat, Market Broilers
Support youth in Agriculture. The 4-H Livestock Auction is your opportunity to show support for local agricultural youth who represent future leaders and customers in Adams County and whose parents do business with you today! This action also includes Adams Central FFA. All money goes directly to the exhibitors.
All bids are a premium bid paid directly to the 4-H or FFA exhibitor. You are not purchasing the animal.
Even if you can’t attend, you can still help. We would love to have you participate in the excitement of the auction. But, if you cannot join us, the Chamber Ag Committee will handle your bids, or if you prefer to make a general donation to underwrite expenses or support the auction as a whole, we would appreciate your help. If you wish to remain anonymous, your donation will be added to a “Friend of 4-H” fund for auction support. Good Business Advertising. We make sure your name is prominently announced at the auction, as well as in all promotional materials. No doubt, people will know that you are a supporter of Agriculture in Adams County. If you purchase a Champion animal, you will have your picture taken with the exhibitor and their project. Your dollars stay here, helping local youth. The 4H and FFA members have invested a lot of time and energy with their animals. By participating in the auction, you can reward their efforts demonstrate your interest in nurturing the future of agriculture here at home.
If you are interested in attending the auction, making a contribution or have any questions, please call (402) 461-7209 and leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Your participation can and will make a difference! Sincerely,
Bob Herbek, 4-H Auction Chairman Rob Waterman, Agri-Business Chairman
