When Researchers LeaveLinda Perez-Saldana,New Mexico Slate University

Linda's tulk on what happens whenresearchers leave due to retirement, advancement, or moving on was inspired

by what happened at NMSU when allthrce ofthose situations occurred in a sbort period of lime.Linda gO( the responsibility of cleaning up the labbecause "someone had to do it"". The followingwere 'iome of the things Linda discovered andpassed on so others would have a place 10 start.

There are Iypically nine types of hazards to beconcerned about: biohazards, radiologicals.flammables, corrosives. poisons/toxins. incompalible mixtures, heavy metals. other chemicals, andthe chtssic "unknowns". Other concerns: includeequipment. service contracLS and warranties. It isespecially of concern if Lhe PI gives thc equipmcnt or items to othcrs without the knowledge orconsent of the depanment chair.

Several helpful keys:

I. Prevention: Proper lab safery training for PIand students. Fomlal checkout system inplace. Physical check of lab before personactually leaves.

2. Preparedness: Knowing that they are leavingbefore they actually leave. Having a currentinventory of the lab. Network of resources forinfomlation.

3. Upper management lluppon.4. Enforcement: Periodic inspections.

Management ··checkout·'.NEVER exceptions.

It may help to develop .1 checklist. Somesuggested steps were:

I. Find a model.2. Meet with management and convince them

this is important.3. Dctennine potential risks.

3

4. Detennine method of ensuring compliance. There was llluch discussion as to how this isdone in variou3 institutions.

Linda then gave time for a discussion to brainstormitems that should be on a chccklisl. She will com·pile the list and post it to the listserve if there isinterest.

Security in theChemical StockroomPatricia Barker,Wabash College

W hen entering the seminar room we weregiven a booklet containing historical

information as well as safety (security)and statistical information. Once an overview ofthe safety Isecurity information was given we weredivided inlo fOllr groups. Each group was given aselection of <Iueslions tbal bad been pre-cbosen andasked 10 discuss then take back to our institutions. This line of communication not only aided inincrea.'\ing our c3.11laderie with the con~ensus ofopinion "we all have the same problems." It alsobroadened our view to other issues of security wemay have heard before bUI overlooked.

Overall, the prcscnlation was well done. reflectingaJithe professionalism and preparedness of wcllresearched topic.

A ter much thought, I have decided to resignas chairman of the Corporate PublicityCommittee. This decision was based

primarily on my philosophy that new faces bringnew ideas.

When Taccepted this position, my initial goal wasto develop, and hopefully take to a new level, theunique relationship of mutual support betweenNAOSMM members and vendor .

During the past three years, Dennis Pope and I haveworked closely to publicize vendors and launchvendor support in recruiting new member. 1am

seminar. chedule, trade show schedule, map of area, and eligible NAOSMM events. Jonathan Gibboni. busy recruiting the RTP area for potential tradeshow exhibitors.

Debbie Pusateri has received over 40 corporatemembership dues renewals for the year 2000. Shesent another reminder to those corporate memberswho have not renewed their NAOSMMmembership.

Start making your plans to attend this year's RTPNAO MM Seminar and Trade Show during theweek of July 31 st and August 4th.

Paul Yedlik

pleased at what we have achieved so far and confident that Dennis will do a great job as the newCorporate Publicity Chairman.

Joining Dennis will be Karen Dally, vice presidentof sales and marketing for Nalgene. I am personallydelighted with the selection of Karen as Nalgenehas been an active NAOSMM supporter for manyyears. In her former position as sales manager withKimble. Karen attended conferences hosted theirvendor sponsored evening and already knows manymembers and vendors.

It has truly been an honor to serve NAOSMM forthe past four years. Twish to thank the past andpresent Executive Board and the members whogave me the assistance associated with NAOSMM.

I also wish to emphasize that 1 am only leaving acommittee and not NAOSMM. I will continue torecruit new members and look forward to seeingeveryone at thi. year, conference in RaJeighDurham!
