Science Talent Search Report Online registration and the checking process are complete. Please ensure that you keep a close eye on your email as we will be corresponding with you by email where possible.

You will receive confirmation of your entries along with face sheets and entry labels for judging on Tuesday June 12. These need to be filled in, signed and attached to each project prior to submission. You will be invoiced on the data in the system on the final closing date May 28. You cannot withdraw entries after this date – if you choose not to submit, you still need to pay the entry fee.

However, there are still several weeks before entries need to be finished, so students still have time to complete their projects. For those who have based their research on this year’s theme, “Australian Game Changers and Change Makers”, the website for National Science Week, www.scienceweek.net.au/ could provide needed references and ideas.

A special thank you to those teachers who have volunteered to judge on August 4. Most will have signed up to keep faith with their students who have worked hard on their projects. For the few teachers who may have been conscripted to make up numbers, be assured you will have an inspirational experience working with students who love science.

Cassandra Dods and Ashley Cain represented Australia at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania alongside over 1,800 high school students from 75 countries, regions, and territories. Cassandra’s independent research project was a FINALIST in this year’s BHP Billiton Foundation Science and Engineering Awards. Cassandra’s project focuses on the potentially harmful impacts of a Coeliac accidentally ingesting gluten while eating out – having experienced it many times. This led to her investigating the efficacy of gluten digesting supplements so others who are Coeliac could enjoy dining with friends without fear. She tested two gluten digestive supplements, GluteGuard and GlutenEase, and simulated the human digestive system to see how much of the gluten had digested into harmless proteins.View a Video of Cassandra’s investigation: https://vimeo.com/253554605

Ashley’s independent engineering project was a FINALIST in this year’s BHP Billiton Foundation

Science and Engineering Awards. Ashley Cain was trying to make his own drone from scratch and wanted to increase the battery life so he developed the Brushless Motor Generator. In a typical brushless motor, all the energy that is consumed is wasted but his motor has a secondary generator component that harvests some of the wasted energy. This increases travel distances for the same amount of fuel which when used on a large scale can make vehicle fleets more efficient.View a Video of Ashley’s engineering project: https://vimeo.com/253347815

Intel ISEF, a program of Society for Science & the Public is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. The BHP Billiton Foundation and Intel Foundation provide support for the BHP Billiton Foundation Science and Engineering Awards Australian delegation attending the fair. The Awards are a partnership between CSIRO, BHP Billiton Foundation and the Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA). For more information about the award go to www.scienceawards.org.au

NEWBOOK

Forceful ExperiencesColouring Newton’s Laws of Motion

By Christina Hart

This resource, for teachers and students of general science at the junior high school level, introduces Newton's Laws of motion at a qualitative level. 'Forceful Experiences' takes students' experiences of motion as a starting point, and guides them to construct a more powerful framework for understanding their everyday world. The approach also provides a secure foundation for those students who will go on to study physics at a more advanced, mathematical level. Features include: Short summaries of the main conceptual points are provided at the end of each chapter. There are frequent opportunities for students to 'Pause for thought' and engage with the ideas they have encountered. These can be set as homework activities and used for small group discussions. At strategic points students are challenged to demonstrate what they have learned. Teachers can use these tasks as a basis for formative and/or summative assessment. An accompanying web page provides supporting materials for teachers and students.
