Hi from Nat’l. Chevy, It’s hot, humid and cloudy – very dreary – one of those days you feel like you could use a nice afternoon nap. We have still been pretty busy, especially with interiors. We went to Iola for a short time. We didn’t find much of interest. The best part is running into old friends and catching up with what is going on. We’re working on some new specials so you won’t find any specials for September in this issue. The current ones are getting old, so time for some new ones. Not much else to talk about. I’m trying to catch some kittens a stray cat had in a shed out back so we can get them to the Humane Society and they can find a good home. I need to get back at it. ‘Til next time.... P.S. — I need pictures — please help!

Note: All above specials for current members only.

In Chevy speak, there are mouse motors and rat motors. Following is my “mouse motor” story (photos) included. Over the weekend I wanted to take my 52 to town for a local show. Since it was a couple months since last warm up, I opted to crank up the old girl and get all the moving pieces oiling and moving about freely. This has always been a sweet running car with no issues, but after a couple minutes I noticed the rpms dropping and then silence. Thinking no gas, I looked at the gauge---h-m-m-m, half a tank. Tried a restart and managed to get a moment or two of revs then it died again. Next came the odor of something burning (thinking wiring), but after cutting off the battery I noticed smoke from the tailpipe. Next I noticed some small charred pieces on the garage floor. I’m not sure how they got up there, but the mice had stockpiled a years supply (for them) of Kibbles-N’-Bits stolen from the yellow Lab’s food locker. Anyway, now I’m due for a trip to the muffler shop—in the car which runs great again, for a replacement. I now have Bounce dryer sheets, repellent, and traps placed and have threatened to find a cat named Killer. Dog may be facing a liquid diet. Anyway, if you need a blank filled in the newsletter---feel free to use.

    Thanks Bob – Cute Story!

_______________ Now Showing in CubaI just wanted to show you some photos of two of my Chevys in Havana, Cuba.

Both are being restored. The 1949 Deluxe is running great after upgrades, and is braking great because of your parts.

The 1954 was purchased with everything original except the carburetor, but the original carb was in the trunk. The 1949 had original 216 with a Russian Volga 4 speed and rear axle. Both are being restored to original, or close to original condition. The 1949 is my daily driver in Havana, and runs great. It has an electronic ignition from Tom Langdon, and the 1954 Chevy Rochester carb.

Attached are some photos of both.Thank you for the great parts and service.

Hand-in-Hand ______________________This month’s column deals with something that we do get a lot of requests for, the accessory fuel pump that has vacuum secondaries, to supply more “oomph” to the wiper motor. It’s possible many of you didn’t even know about this accessory, but enough of you asked, so you shall receive. I found a company that still manufactures brand new pumps, (no rebuilts), but we had to purchase a semi trailer load to get on their wholesale program. I’ve got enough fuel pumps and water pumps to pump half of everything America has to pump. Those of you who did not know that this accessory fuel pump existed, let me give you a quick education. The 1953/54 Chevrolet came with a stock, glass bowl fuel pump. This fuel pump was all you needed if you lived in the desert southwest. However, for those people living in a climate that rain falls from the sky occasionally, Chevrolet manufactured the accessory fuel pump.

Your motor loses vacuum under acceleration, and heaven forbid if it rained when you tried to accelerate. Your wipers would slow, or stop, depending on the condition of your wiper motor. I’m actually surprised I don’t see more cars equipped with this accessory. Don’t you need to see where you’re going? In 1953 and ‘54, this accessory fuel pump (AC9797) cost an extra $15.45. A manual tune radio cost $36.75, so what did everyone do? Buy the

radio and crash their car during a down pour. At least they could listen to static during their accident.

Enough education. Well, not quite. As you can see on the fuel pump page of the new catalog, we give you plenty to choose from. Both original style pumps with the glass bowl are offered, as well as replacements of both types for the budget conscious customer. What seems to be missing is the reproduction vacuum lines for the accessory fuel pump. Not to worry, hopefully by the time you read this, we will also have them available.

We parted out a car that had the accessory fuel pump setup on it, so I did a drawing showing how everything hooks up. If you wish to add the accessory fuel pump to your car, simply order a fuel pump and the lines, and you are in business. No need to throw away your radio, though, there is always room for another accessory.

Just thought of another accessory in the fuel system. It might be a nice idea to add Part #1361, the accessory fuel filter to your car. The fuel pump has a screen in it to stop large particles of crud from getting to the carb, but the fuel filter will stop all the tiny particles as well. Use with #1385 accessory fuel line for easy installation.

From the 1954 edition of “Genuine Chevrolet Parts Ready Reference Time Saver.” Wow ... what features!

    Hi NCA!

This is my last (?) article plus pictures that I will contribute to the Parts-Line newsletter. You will understand after you read the article.

Thanks, thanks, thanks for publishing my “stuff” over all of these years! Smile!

Earl BurnettRichmond, VirginiaFriday, June 16, 2017

    Hello Chevy Fans!

All of you know the “Three Strikes-You’re Out” rule, right? Well, Ginny and Earl Burnett of Richmond, Virginia have struck out, big time! Since 1996 the transmission in their ‘53 Chevy had needed to be repaired three times. The first two times, their mechanic, Tim Gray, owner and operator of Headlights to Tailpipes, Inc. shop, was successful in getting the transmission to work correctly. But this third time, after over some fourteen months, a no-go! The transmission was sent two times out of state to be repaired without any corrections being done. The internet, Chevy clubs, word of mouth, you name it, etc., were used and still no luck finding someone who kew how to repair the transmission.

So, after much hesitation and discussions, Ginny and I realized this was our “THIRD STRIKE” and we were “out.” We decided to put our beloved ‘53 Chevy up for sale after having the opportunity to enjoy it tremendously for some 20 years. But wait! There is good news coming. Tim, our mechanic, already has two “old” Chevys in his collection (See Parts-Line club newsletter, Vol. 27, No. 3, May, 2012 for pictures of one of his cars with our ‘53 Chevy on the cover and on page 9). He decided to purchase our car to add to the others with the intention of putting in an updated transmission, motor, etc. Here is the best part! Tim said after all of these years together, we are like family. Ginny and I could get the car to drive at any time we desire! WOW!

We want to give special shout-outs to Tim, who did his best to keep us ‘rolling’ in our Chevy; to NCA, for

providing us with the many things we ordered for the car; and to John & Jo Kranitz of Dayton, MN, who introduced us to NCA back in 1997. We are including our first picture of the ‘53 Chevy taken in Clearwater, FL, where we purchased the car in 1996, and our last picture, taken at Tim’s shop last month (boo hoo)!

But hold on! I will still wear my ‘53 Chevy caps proudly and continue my membership with the Chevy Club newsletter. We are in our mid-seventies and helping our grandkids with their college expenses so they won’t have loans to pay back. Who knows maybe after they graduate we won’t look for another ‘53 Chevy like the one we had, but this time get a jet-black one like the one we had when we got married in 1953!

Making Special Trim Clips ________Remember those two pieces of stainless steel trim between the rear windshield and the trunk that overlap by an inch and have special 1 inch by 3/4 inch bracket clips with a mini carriage screw? There are thirteen of those things (Fig. A), six on the left

and seven on the right side with a thick rubber grommet enclosed in a steel cap and a hex nut on the inside of the trunk. They are engineered with a lot of vertical play so that the trim will fit the contour of the body and the head of the screw is flat so that it does not interfere with the stainless trim as it pivots into position. Well, most of mine were rusted beyond reuse (Fig. B) so I decided to replace them all with stainless but have you ever found any? I did in a hardware store and you can too if you are willing to make them.

You will need thirteen of everything (Fig. C) in stainless steel: (plus extra that may drop into oh-ho land).

    • 1 inch fender washers with a 1/4 inch hole. Even though 3/16 inch holes are also available, do not get them since there will not be enough play in the screw.

    • #10 flat washer• #10 lock washer• #10 hex nut, 24 thread (3/8 inch wrench should

    fit this.)• #10 pan head machine screw, 24 thread, 3/4 to 1

inch long (Fig. D)• about 1/8 inch thick solid rubber, not the foam

    stuff

  • August 2017 The National Chevy AssociationTM 11

Grind down the head of the #10 pan heads (Fig. E)

so that it is flat. I had a bucket of water handy to drop those into and suggest using a vise, first as a stable mount and second because it will pull off heat. Buy, or make like I did, the rubber grommets by drilling (Fig. F) 11/64 holes in 1/8 inch thick solid

rubber. I used a piece of scrap rubber from another project. Then cut a circle about 1/2 or more around each of the drilled holes to make fresh grommets. Be sure to drill the holes first! The assembled parts look like this (Fig. G) but make sure that the 1 inch washer’s rounded edge is toward the screw head and that the sharp edge is facing up. (There is no need to assemble them all like this right now.)

It’s time to slide six of them into that left trim, seven into the right trim (Fig. H) and boy do they go around that curve smoothly. Note how the screws

have plenty of room to maneuver (Figure I). Install the left side trim first and try the fit. If you feel that a particular 1 inch washer needs a curve hammered into it, then do it. Here is the order (Fig. J): trim, screw, 1 inch washer with rounded side toward trim and screw head, car body, grommet, flat, lock, nut. There is nothing to keep the screw from turning inside the trim when the nut is being turned but this was not a problem for me. Just pull the screw from the inside of the trunk while pushing the rubber grommet against the car body. This created enough friction so that the nut went on tight.

    _________ Making Special Trim Clips

  • 12 The National Chevy AssociationTM August 2017

The second screw in from the door was in a difficult spot. So, I applied some silicone to the screw top just before attempting to put on the #10 flat and lock washers. This process kept the two pieces from falling off the thread and gave me time to get the hex nut in place but it also made turning the nut more difficult since it added friction to the nut and screw head turned all the more inside the trim. So, I tightened grommet to the car body a little more and it was soon fixed. Ahah, for this reason do not drill a hole larger than 11/64 inch in the grommet. The stainless hardware cost me $10.
