Problem solving skills are learned in many different ways and can be handled differently depending on the person. However, it is how we handle the situation that determines if we have truly grown past the times that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. so avidly spoke of when he was around. Dr. King spoke on respect, equality, and peace for all so we should keep his dream alive and continue to treat everyone the same way. No matter if you are big, small, old, young, color or no color we should all be treated with the same kindness and love we give to those who are closest to us. Keep the Dream Alive!

Healthy Kids, Smart Kids

Stonewall Tell Elementary has adopted the Healthy Kids, Smart Kids wellness initiative. We believe that healthier eating habits and consistent exercise have a positive impact on our children’s learning and ultimately their test scores. When sending classroom snacks, please remember that this is a “Sugar-Free Zone” school. Do not send soft drinks, fruit drinks with processed sugar, candy, cookies, ice cream, cupcakes, cakes, hot fries or sugary snacks. Also note that birthday parties that include cakes, cookies, wings, ice cream and other treats are prohibited and will not be allowed in the building. Healthier items such as fruit cups, fresh fruit, pretzels, baked chips, 100% juice, fresh vegetables, 100% fruit snacks, granola bars, animal crackers and items with low salt and minimum sugar are allowed.

** Due to nut allergies, please do not send any snacks with peanuts or peanut butter in them.

Parents please note that if your child has a fever of at least 100

degrees (F) they must be “fever-

free” for 24 hours before returning to school. This policy will be strictly

enforced so that we might combat/prevent the spread of any flu-like virus in the school.

Counselor’s Corner Being a parent is the most demanding job in the world, yet most of us train “on the job.” When things are going well, savor the moment. When things are not going well you may feel stressed and overwhelmed.

· Are you sleeping and eating too much or too little?

· Do you take your frustrations out on your kids?

· Do you feel out of control?

· Do you feel as if your children misbehave on purpose?

· Do you strike out physically or verbally when angry?

· Do you have chronically upset stomach or muscle aches, especially in your back and neck?

· Are you frustrated because your children don’t listen?

· Do you feel as if you pick on one particular child?

· Do you feel as if you can’t talk to your kids?

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, you may need to reach out for help. Call your school counselor for resources and information.

From The Desk of Nurse Plott

Fulton County Schools Illness Policy:

Please remember that sending a sick child to school may cause them to spread the virus to

other students and staff members. Additionally, we want your child to feel well enough to be at

school and learn. Students who are sick, contagious (potential or actual) and/or have a

fever greater than 100.4 MUST NOT be sent to school. In order to return to school, a student

should be fever free for at least 24 hours and not require medications to reduce fever; and in some

cases must be cleared to return to school by a health care provider. When a student becomes ill at school, runs a fever, has a potential contagious illness or has a more serious health problem while at school, the parent/guardian will be notified to

pick-up their child immediately. The parent/guardian MUST ARRANGE for the student

to be taken home. Again, a note from a doctor may be requested by the school before your child can return to school. In order for us to be able to

contact you quickly, in case your child is sick or has an emergency, please be sure all your emergency phone numbers and contacts are updated in our

computer system. Please refer to the CDC’s website for a complete guide to information about

the flu, prevention strategies and continuous updates on the flu season:

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/flu-season-2012-2013.htm

In Fulton County Schools, Student Health Services works in collaboration with the school clinics and

school staffs to insure the guidelines for identifying, containing, reporting and preventing suspected and/or confirmed infectious illnesses

are followed. In addition, this year in some schools we have offered flu clinics for students

and staff. By working together, we can help reduce the transmission of the flu and other

infectious illnesses in the schools and community. For more information, please

contact the Office of Student Health Services at (404) 305-2177.

How to Manage Anger

Constantly blowing your stack not only alienates others, it can contribute to health problems, including headaches, stomach upset and heart attack. To take control:

Count to 10 & take 3 or 4 deep breaths. Ask yourself: “Will this really matter a year from now?”

Walk it off. Go for a short stroll. Find a place where you can think out loud and take a second look at how you are reacting to a situation.

Distract yourself. Example: In a traffic jam, play soothing music instead of pounding the horn. At work, dive into a task to turn negative energy positive.

Keep a log. Monitor hostile thoughts to discover how frequently your temperature rises. This will help sort out the real causes of your anger, which are often things beyond control.

ASK for help. Don’t be afraid to try counseling, meditation, lifestyle changes or other kinds of ongoing psychological help. Your health may depend on it.

Strategic Plan 2017 This is the school system’s roadmap for how

Fulton County Schools aims to improve student

achievement over the next five years. Three

goals serve as the district’s measure for long-

term student success, which is that students will

graduate on time and be ready for college or the

workforce.

• Graduation Rate – 90% of Fulton

students will graduate on time

• College Readiness – 85% of Fulton’s

seniors will be eligible for admission to a

University System of Georgia college or university

• Career Readiness – 100% of Fulton's

graduates will be work-ready certified

“These are big goals, but they are attainable,”

said Superintendent Avossa. “Our strategic plan

is focused on improving outcomes for all

students, and the only way to do this is to set

measurable goals and put supports in place to

help our students and staff to reach them.” To that end, as part of its “Building Our Future”

strategic planning initiative, the school system

will focus on five key areas – instruction,

people, technology, effective schools and

resources – to drive improvement.

• Instruction – Students will be engaged

in learning that enables them to reach their full

potential for college and career readiness

• People – Fulton County Schools will

attract and retain the most talented and effective

employees in K-12 education

• Technology – Students, parents,

teachers and administrators will have the tools

and information they need to accelerate learning

• Effective Schools – School leadership

will be collaborative and will balance innovation

with accountability • Resources – Student needs will be supported

with efficient and effective allocation of staff,

instructional materials and equipment. The strategic plan will guide the system’s

direction over the next five years and is the result

of many conversations with the school board,

teachers and school leaders as well as

engagement with parents and the community.

The plan is posted at

www.fultonschools.org/StrategicPlan2017.

Talented And Gifted- February Critical Thinking

February’s Higher Order/Critical Thinking Activities Blurb:

This month we will focus on Direct Analogies… Direct Analogy allows the students to compare

two concepts or objects directly. Direct analogies allow students to see ideas and

problems from a new perspective. This helps them develop more creative ideas to solve

problems. Allow your child to answer the following analogies…Please send responses to Mrs.

Burton~ TAG Room B125… • How is a map like a shoe?

• How is a recipe like a jogging trail? • How is a book like a picture?

• How is a heart like a computer?
