April, the first real month of spring. March once again had more snow than February so we are

really looking forward to the thaw. Even with the changing weather, our students have been

busy in and around school. They have been focused on the musical, all-county concerts, clubs,

athletics and academics. We have monthly presentations on animals, and watch plays, our

students attend webinars and use maker-spaces. We are planning field trips and in school

presentations and will participate in our Community Day. Our faculty goes out of their way to

provide not only high quality education in the classroom but backs it up with a wide variety of

educational experiences for our students. West Valley is a great place to learn.

Dr. William Silky is finalizing our pre-annexation study and will be presenting the results at a

public meeting. He compared our district resources, our educational programs, our financial

situation including tax rates, and the community make-up. We have not set the date as of the

writing of this article, but will be sure to publicize the time, date and location.

We will be continuing to have a presence of our town constables around the campus. This is

not because of any threat; it is simply as a presence in and around our district grounds. I have

asked them to be here at random times during the school day. They will be interacting with our

students and faculty to promote the idea of peace officers as friends and resources. Thanks to

the Town of Ashford for all of the help and cooperation.

Also we are celebrating our senior citizens this month with a brunch on April 20th there are

details below. Don’t forget to sign up for some help on Community Day May 4th. Happy

Spring!

West Valley Central School District Newsletter 3 April 2018

In a few weeks, the New York State Grades 3-8 English Language

Arts (ELA) and Mathematics Tests will be administered to

students. Beginning this year, the number of test sessions for these

annual assessments will be reduced from three days to two days. Additionally, like the 2016

and 2017 tests, the 2018 Grades 3-8 ELA and Math Tests will continue to be untimed.

The ELA Tests will be given on two consecutive school days Wednesday, April 11 and

Thursday, April 12, and the math on two consecutive school days Tuesday, May 1 and

Wednesday, May 2.

Below you will find a summary of the changes that were made to the 2018 Grades 3-8 English

Language Arts and Mathematics Tests.

Two testing days per subject. With fewer test sessions, each test will have fewer ques-

tions than in recent years, lessening test fatigue for students and better enabling them to

demonstrate what they know and are able to do.

The tests continue to be untimed so students who are still working on their exams will

be allowed to continue to work, within the confines of the regular school day. Students

who finish the regular test session may be permitted to leave the room.

Test questions reviewed and written by New York State Teachers. Hundreds of New

York State educators were involved in creating and reviewing questions for 2018 Grades 3-

8 ELA and Math Tests and selecting the questions for the test forms. This year, the assess-

ments will also feature many test questions written by New York State teachers specifically

for the annual New York State tests.

Test questions and instructional reports will be released before the end of the school

year. Like last year , the State Education Depar tment will release 75-percent of ques-

tions from the 2018 tests and the instructional reports for educators on or around June 1.

Test results cannot be the sole factor in determining the retention or promotion of a

student.

As you can see, there have been many changes to the New York State testing program in re-

sponse to concerns from parents, educators, and students. While no single test can tell us eve-

rything about student performance, the NYS assessments offer parents, teachers, and students a

snapshot of student performance where we can plan for instructional changes that will lead to

continued student improvement.

West Valley’s focus is and always will be an educating the whole child. On a regular basis,

students are assessed on their progress to allow us to adjust students learning goals and our in-

structional plans. The New York State assessments will allow us to continue this practice. If

you have any questions or concerns regarding the upcoming state assessments, please do not

hesitate to contact me. I would be more than happy to listen to your questions and ease any

concerns you may have about the testing program.

Mrs. Martin’s Literature & Film students took a field trip to Springville’s Joylan Theatre to

view the film adaptation of the popular novel by R.J. Palacio, Wonder. The movie proved to be

one of the most heart-warming films for adults and students, reminding us that when you have

the choice to be right or to be kind, CHOOSE KIND.

In this elective, students read popular and current novels that have been adapted into films.

They read the novels together, discussing and analyzing along the way, and then compare and

contrast the novel with the film adaptation. Students are expected to not only view the film for

entertainment purposes but are to focus on the affordances of each medium, print and film. By

the end of the semester, they have to make a huge decision: do they prefer the movie or the

book?

A big thank you to Amy Bobseine and Joylan Theatre for accommodating us and providing a

private, matinee screening! (And Miss Pfeffer’s Fifth Grade says thank you for letting us tag

along!)

Please cut Box Tops and send

them in with your child.

He/she can give them to

homeroom teachers.

FAMILY STEAM NIGHT

February’s Family STEAM Night celebrated the creativity of Dr. Seuss. Students constructed

nests for Horton, created Truffula trees, and built habitats for the animals in the zoo. Students

also made new hats for the Cat in the Hat and made some interesting things to see on

Mulberry Street. Hot air balloon creations took students to all the Place They Will Go!

Students also explored the world of robots with R2D2 and BB8. Fun was had by all!

Sewing for Charity is back at it again. A group of 4th, 5th and 6th graders meet once a month

to work on turning scrap fabric into warmth for others. So far they have made a large number

of polar fleece hats and scarves that were donated to the Community Clothes Closet. For the

rest of the year, we will be making lap quilts. This year the lap quilts will be donated to those

receiving Meals on Wheels. So far, we have donated 5 and hope to make 8 more before the end

of the school year. Thanks to the dedicated sewers for making this a reality.

Once again our elementary students were able to learn about an

interesting animal from Mr. Morton. Mr. Morton comes to us from Sun

Dance Kids Farm in Conewango Valley, NY. He brought in a variety of

chickens and young chicks for our children to learn about and pet. He

talked about the different types and colors of eggs the chickens

produce. He also showed the children what it looks like inside of the

egg at different stages of the chicken’s development before it hatches.

We learned a lot about chickens!

The HeARTbeat of West Valley

Spring is in the air and our young artists are in full bloom! Pictured here

are 8th grade student Serene Dearmyer and 7th grader Janay Ghani, with

their work from the St. Bonaventure Middle School Juried Exhibition.

Our high school electives have been very

busy! Sculpture students are well on their way

working on fairy houses made of plastic

bottles, plaster, and other found objects. Our

photography students have been working hard

practicing good compositions, lighting, and

taking “photographs” rather than “snapshots.”

The piano photograph was taken by 10th

grader, Sierra Folts.

Studio in Art students just finished building

their ceramic coil pots and will start a group

project on creating themed totem poles.

Our drawing and painting

class has been

working on

painting black

and white

images on

canvas which

will then be

then be accented

with colored

embroidery.

Congratulations to Nathan Dash! His artwork has been selected to be featured in the AK

Teens: 2018 Future Curators Exhibition hosted by the Alrbight Knox. The AK Teens:

Future Curators is an annual program designed to expose high school students to the museum

field. Local high school juniors and seniors have selected Nathan’s work to be included in the

annual exhibition. Nathan’s work displayed at St. Bonaventure’s High School Juried Art

Exhibition has also been selected as one of three “Best in Show” scholarship winners! Art

teacher Mrs. Mazzuto says, “Nathan has a natural gift for art. Since knowing him his

freshman year, he has developed his own style and puts meaning in his artwork. His pieces

are critical and show higher level thinking. The art department and school could not be more

proud of his accomplishments this year- showing at St. Bonaventure, University at Buffalo,

and the Albright Knox!” Nathan aspires to go into the field of art education. Congratulations

to Chloe Chai, who was also featured at the St. Bonaventure High School Exhibit.

Students in grades 6-12 had the pleasure of

hearing from two local Holocaust survivors,

Mr. Martin Lewin and Mrs. Beth Lewin in

early March. Mr. and Mrs. Lewin are

affiliated with the Holocaust Resource Center

of Buffalo and were gracious enough to come

to our school to share their stories.

Mr. Lewin came to the United States when he

was 12 with his family, fleeing Nazi control

in Germany. Mrs. Lewin came to the United States several years after she had been sent away

from Germany with her older brother on a kinder transport by her mother and father when she

was just 7 years old. Sadly, Mrs. Lewin never saw her parents again. Many of their family

members lost their lives during the Holocaust. Mrs. Lewin urged the students to never forget the

Holocaust and to keep the memory of those who lost their lives and suffered under oppression

of the Nazi regime alive for generations to come.

West Valley appreciates Mr. and Mrs. Lewin taking the time to come to our school to share

their stories and teach our students and staff what it means to be brave, resilient, and be an

advocate for peace and human rights for everyone. Mr. and Mrs. Lewin, we promise to NEVER

FORGET.

(Pictured below are Mr. and Mrs. Lewin with Mrs. Martin and Mr. Lembke)

West Valley Central School gymnasium, weight room and locker

rooms are closed, due to resurfacing the floor.

St John’s of West Valley is sponsoring a CLOTHES CLOSET for the community of

West Valley:

Open every Wednesday from 1-4pm or by appointment.

The clothes closet is accepting gently worn and clean donations.

Spring/Summer clothing, shoes for adults and children, baby clothes, blankets, and

bedding are greatly needed.

At this time, we cannot accept any fall/winter clothing.

Questions??? Please call Jacque Conrad at 942-3836

West Valley Food Pantry (located at the Ashford Town Barns on Fox Valley Road)

The pantry is located at the Ashford Town Barns on Fox Valley Road.

It serves the families of the Town of Ashford and the West Valley School District.

If West Valley Central School closes due to inclement weather, the food pantry will

close.

It is open the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 1-4pm.

For emergency needs, call Kris Aldrow at 942-6690 or Corky Miller at 716-257-3651.

Donations are always welcome. The following items are regularly needed; juice, cereal,

macaroni, toilet paper and paper towels.
