Alumni Ball

Date .Changed

JOE HART

Chairman

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Alumni Ball which was scheduled to take place on December 5, 1958, at The Queen Elizabeth Hotel, has had to be postponed. The Ball will take place, however, on February 5, 1959, at the Ritz Carleton Hotel and music will still be provided by the superb orchestra of Eddie Alexander. A Mardi Gras theme will be used.

Recently President Fred D. Mccaffrey announced the appointment of Joe Hart ·'37 as Chairman of this Alumni Social. The Son of one of Loyola's first graduates, Mr. Hart is the father of one of Loyola 's present second year high students, Michael Hart, who is maintaining the family tradition. He is also President of Hart Motors and of Addington Enterprises Ltd., as well as being a Director of several other firms.

Mr. Hart is presently preparing a list of distinguished guests and patrons for the Ball, which he hopes to make one of the outstanding events of the Association to date. Even now, a great deal of interest is being shown in the ~all and many plans and surprises are already being made.

Further details will be sent to members in the near future.

Rector Receives High Honour

OYSTER PARTY

HUGE SUCCESS

One hundred and sixty-five Alumni and their friends met in the Loyola Cafeteria on October 10th for the Annual Alumni Oyster Party. Under the Chairmanship of Art Lapres, '42, the evening was, as usual, a great success, giving equal pleasure to Loyolans of all ages - as evidenced by these photos.

Very Reverend Father Rector receives th c

congratu lation s of President Sifton of the

University of Manitoba, as the Academic

hood is adjusted by the University Registrar .

At a colorful and impressive ceremony held recently in Winnipeg, the University of Manitoba conferred an Honorary Doctor of Law Degree upon Very Reverend Gerald F. Lahey·, S.J., Rector of Loyola College. Father Lahey also delivered the Convocation address.

Prior to his appointment as Rector of · Loyola, Father Lahey had been Dean of Saint Paul's College, a College in Winnipeg affiliated with the University of Manitoba. He had held this post for eighteen years and had als~ been for many years a member of the Senate of the University. Father Lahey also holds a Ph.D. degree.

This high honor which was conferred upon Father Lahey was seen by many as a tribute to the Man and the College with which he was formerly associated and, of course, Father Lahey's happiness was shared by the College of which he is now Rector and by Loyola Alumni everywhere.

KENNETH F. SLOAN Wins Alumni Bursary

Kenneth F. Sloan, B.Sc., a 1958 graduate of Loyola College, has been announced as this year's winner of the Alumni Graduate Bursary. Mr~ Sloan is presently studying mechanical engineering at McGill University and will graduate in 1960.

The Bursary of $200.00 is awarded by a Committee representing both the Alumni Association and the College and is restricted to members of the current graduating class. It is intended to assist a deserving student to meet the high cost of further education.

The undergraduate bursary annually awarded by the Alumni Association to a student presently attending the College is presented again this year to Robert Coughlin of Junior Science.

Father Moylan Guest of Honor at Testimonial Dinner

of the Council for Financial Aid to Education, observes "the regular and intelligent support of its alumni and other friends is

· the best capital that any college or university can have." He continues "the heart of a good development program is nearly always a sound and productive annual giving program.

Nearly 100 former students and per-sonal friends gathered in the Persian

Enters the Archives On October 1, 1958, "The Loyola

Alumnus" was added to the Books and periodicals which are on file in the National Library of the Public Archives of Canada. - In addition, our newsletter has been granted by Ottawa the right to second class mailing privileges.

It is, no doubt, encouraging for Loyola Alumni to see these steps added to the progress which their Association has made in recent years. The end toward which we are working is a union of all former Loyola Students bound together by their desire not only to see Loyola grow and expand. Fund Raising For Education

With two months remaining in this year the Alumni Fund is $2,000.00 short of its objective. If you have not yet contributed, now is ~he time, no matter what the amount, to be loyal to Loyola. Send your cheque today.

Presented with an automatic wrist watch and a bronze plaque for his office, Father Moylan, in answer to the many glowing tributes which were paid him, said that he could only thank God for making it possible for him to be of any service he may have ·been to his fellow man. He said that he has alway njoyed his work at Loyola and could only pray that God would allow him to continue for many years to come.

Father Moylan, who · was completely surprised by the size of the gathering, was further surprised when a vacancy at the head table was suddenly filled by his brother, Mr. Wm. Moylan, who flew in from Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, especially for the event.

After dinner Father Moylan shook hands with each guest and then sat back to contentedly puff on a king size cigar.
