As of now, it is difficult to imagine traffic zipping past toll manifolds like in developed countries. We are witnessing long traffic jam at toll plazas in India, especially at the ones near the city. Manual toll collection is the order of the day. About 80% to 90% users are paying toll by cash. In a toll plaza lane about 120-150 vehicles per hour are processed with cash transaction. If more and more people start using Debit/Credit cards, Paytm, Freecharge etc., it may reduce the queue length. However it has its own challenges. Therefore, there is lot of focus being brought on Electronic Toll Collection (ETC). ETC with a throughput of 1000 – 1200 vehicles per hour is currently the most efficient method of toll collection in the world. ETC automatically identifies a vehicle equipped with a valid encoded data tag or transponder as it moves through a toll lane or checkpoint. ETC then posts a debit or charge to a patron’s account, without the patron having to stop to pay the toll. In ETC, Tag or On-Board Unit is used, which contains information about that particular vehicle and allows its smooth transition. NHAI has developed its pan-India ETC system called Fast-tag, which is still having some teething trouble. According to a joint study by the Transport Corporation of India and the IIM Calcutta, the implementation of a pan-India ETC on national highways may help save Rs 87,000 crore in the value of time and extra fuel spent. In our projects, we not only have a dedicated Fast-tag lane but also, all or many other lanes are also ETC enabled. In addition to ETC, if we adopt ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) or LPR (License plate recognition) vehicles do not need to wait and toll plaza are also not required. Since ETC & ANPR technologies identify a vehicle and collect toll automatically. Nowadays, the ANPR technology has improved its reliability, from 90% to 95%. Also, some ANPR equipment are able to recognize the number plate of vehicles that drive up to 200km/h. If nationwide ANPR coupled ETC is implemented, then there will be no toll booths at all. We are eagerly awaiting to embrace new technologies. - Narayanan S (COO - HC 1) I have had the good fortune of meeting some legendary personalities in my career as a motivational speaker and an author. As of now, it is difficult to imagine traffic zipping past toll manifolds like in developed countries. We are witnessing long traffic jam at toll plazas in India, especially at the ones near the city. Manual toll collection is the order of the day. About 80% to 90% users are paying toll by cash.
