A Letter from the Pastor:
by Pastor Jay Anderson
“I Once Was Lost….(oh, if ONLY it were just once!)”
Growing up in Madison, Indiana it was always easy to find your way
around. This historic old city was laid out in a grid pattern with streets
running either north-south or east-west. Furthermore, the Ohio River was
ALWAYS to the south and it didn’t take long before you could just sense in your bones where the river was in relation to where you were. So knowing
your directions or where a street was located was always pretty simple.
As a teenage I had terrible acne. It was so bad, in fact, that I had weekly
appointments with the local dermatologist in Madison. It wasn’t long,
though, before that local doctor referred me to a dermatological specialist
in Louisville, Kentucky, 45 miles away. Fortunately, those appointments
weren’t weekly, but I did go every other week for a series of treatments
that seemed almost barbarian to the teenage me. Not a lot of fun!
However, since my mom had to work and couldn’t take me, I got to drive
myself down to “the big city” for these appointments. I remember the first
time I went, I found the office in downtown Louisville (it’s pronounced “Lou
-uh-vull,” by the way), had my appointment and then got in the car to head
back home. Instinctively knowing where the river was and that it was
ALWAYS to my south, I took off. Forty minutes later, as I was approaching
Elizabethtown, Kentucky I realized two things - one, I had gone the wrong
direction because in Kentucky the river is ALWAYS to the north, and two,
my lack of true directional instinct was going to be a BIG problem. I was SO
certain that I had gone in the right direction - there was not a doubt in my
mind!

To this day, I am directionally challenged. Inside of a build-
ing I couldn’t tell you the direction on a compass to save my
life. Sitting in my office I have to look out the window to get
my bearings before I even attempt to point toward some
landmark or building that is out of sight. If I guess at a direc-
tion I am almost always wrong and most of the time off by
180 degrees. It is a sad, sad state of affairs.
Lent, however, is a season that affords us the opportunity
to be “found.” During Lent people often choose to give up
something - as a form of self-denial or sacrifice - or to take
on something new, such as a spiritual discipline of some
kind. Both are noble gestures if done for the right reason.
But Lent is about more than that. Lent is about owning the
fact that we are, in fact, “lost;” that we often are going in the wrong direction in our lives, in our spiritual journey, in
our relationships, or whatever it might be. Lent invites us to “turn around.” Scripture calls it repentance, but what it
means is to turn in a new direction, to make the necessary changes in our lives - not just for 40 days but for good -
that will keep us going in the direction of God’s deepest desire for us as God’s beloved children.
If I had had a GPS way back when I was making bi-weekly trips to the doctor in Louisville, I would likely not have
gotten AS turned around - it’s not a guarantee but at least my odds would have been better. As Christians we have
our own GPS - God’s Positioning System - in Jesus Christ and his teachings that, if we follow them, will keep us from
getting lost. “I once was lost, but now I’m found,” the great hymn tells us. I hope you can find your way to our Len-
ten worship series on “The Way of Jesus,” and our book study “The Walk,” and to all of our Lent and Holy Week
worship opportunities.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Jay

Mental Health First– Aid Class
Saturday, March 7, 9:00 a.m.– 6:00 p.m.
Church of the Master is pleased to host a Mental Health First Aid workshop on March 7,
from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to
identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance abuse
disorders. The eight hour training gives you the skills you need to reach out and
provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or
substance abuse problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.
The workshop, sponsored by Stephen Ministry and the Health and Wellness Cabinet, is
being presented by NAMI of Franklin County. Lunch and refreshments are provided. There is no cost to attend, but
we are limited to the first 30 registrants. Contact the church office or Greg Shaw, [email protected] or

Music Concerts at Church of the Master This Month– All are Free!
Sunday March 15th at 8:00pm – “Pop! Goes the Opera”
The Otterbein Singers, under the direction of Dennis Davenport and Joyce Stonebraker, present "Pop! Goes the
Opera!" Beginning in the 1970s and 1980s, musical theatre was transformed by epic, sung-through works with a
larger-than-life “operatic” scale of production, story-telling and singing, while retaining a “pop” sensibility. You
know these works, among the most popular of all time: "Les Miserables" (1985) and "Miss Saigon" (1989) by
Schönberg and Boublil; and the never-ending cavalcade of hits from Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber: "Jesus Christ
Superstar" (1971), "Evita" (1978), "Cats" (1980), and "Phantom of the Opera" (1986). All these and more will
feature the talents of Otterbein’s musical theatre students as we sing the great tunes of Pop Opera!
Including choral arrangements, solos, duets and small ensembles, the program will feature the talents of the
35-member Otterbein Singers, a choral ensemble made up entirely of BFA Musical Theatre and Acting students.
The concert is a benefit for the Friends of the Courtright Memorial Library. Admission is free, donations to the
Friends are welcome, and the Friends will host a reception following the concert.
Tuesday March 17th at 8:00pm – Otterbein Student Jazz Combos
Friday March 20th at 7:00pm – American Guild of Organists present Organ Jazz featuring our pipe organ and a
Hammond B3
Saturday March 28th at 5:00pm – 10th Annual Otterbein Flute Choir Day directed by Kimberlee Goodman and

Warm Workday
The COM workday at WARM (the local food bank) on February 25 was a huge success! Twenty-five folks of various ages helped to sort
donated food into boxes by category--vegetables, beans, soups, etc. Even the littlest members were able to contribute by retrieving cans
from the bottoms of the giant donation boxes! WARM receives over half of its food donations in the months of November and December,
so there was a lot to sort. To make food donations throughout the year, you can
put cans into the WARM and NNEMAP cart in the Gathering Space. A monetary
donation provides even more food, because WARM can purchase groceries very
inexpensively from the Mid Ohio Food Bank. If you enjoyed the workday and
would like to do more volunteering at WARM, (1) go to the "volunteer" tab at
warmwesterville.org, (2) download and fill out an application, and (3) return it to
Julia Smith, the Volunteer Services Manager ([email protected]).
Westerville Service Day Another service opportunity is scheduled for next month: COM will be participat-
ing in Westerville Service Day on Saturday, April 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will be doing yardwork, repairs, painting, and cleaning for
senior citizens and residents-in-need in the Westerville School District. Mark your calendar and stay tuned for more details! If you know a
senior citizen or other resident who could use some help, email [email protected] with the resident's name, phone, ad-
dress, and a description of the work he/she needs done.

Church of the Master
Invites You to Join Us for
VBS, Day Camp, and Survivor Camp
July 20-24, 2020
This year our theme is The Knights of North Castle. Together we will
learn to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of God’s power by
exploring how we put on the armor of God. Kids will discover different pieces of armor at work in the lives of
familiar Bible characters. They will also explore how that armor works in their own lives as they follow and serve God. Kids participate in
memorable Bible-learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, devour yummy treats, create fun crafts, explore
amazing science experiments, and serve God through mission projects. And if that is not enough, campers at Sugarbush will also get to
enjoy the fun of traditional camping activities such as hiking, campfires, cookouts, and creeking!
Survivor is our Day Camp component for rising 6th -8th grade. Besides discovering that God is good even when life is wild, campers
will have the opportunity to “Out Love. Out Grow. Out Serve.” Everything we do at Survivor is “Super-Sized” for extra Middle School Youth
fun. Our week long schedule will include the following: Bible study, crafts, off-site trips, cookouts, pizza, creeking, mission projects, making
ice cream, and much, much, more!!
