A Note from the Community Lay Director “While traveling through Georgia a young man from California stopped in a roadside café for breakfast. The waitress, an older lady with a thick southern drawl and a friendly smile, asked what he would like for breakfast. The young man ordered ham and eggs (over easy), country potatoes, toast with jam and coffee. The lady walked to the window that separated the diner from the kitchen and called out the order to the cook, a large man with brawny arms and a navy anchor tattoo on his stocky left bicep. The coffee came quickly and shortly thereafter the waitress brought the young man’s breakfast. She placed the large platter with a thick piece of country ham, three eggs and grilled potatoes in front of him. On a separate plate was a short stack of toasted bread that was clearly baked in the restaurant’s kitchen and next to that she put down a small bowl of homemade preserves. Finally, the waitress put down a separate little bowl of, what looked like, white mush. The young man looked at the bowl and then to his waitress and asked, “excuse me ma’am, but what is that?” The lady smiled and said, “why honey, those are grits.” The young man looked carefully at the grits and then back to the waitress and said, “but I didn’t order grits.” “Oh sweetie,” she said with a soft smile, “you’re in the south. Here, you don’t order grits, you just git grits.” The second talk of a weekend and the first Clergy talk is the first “Grace” talk, Prevenient Grace. I’m not going to attempt to explain the intricacies of prevenient grace, but I am going to tell you that like grits in the south the grace of our Lord just comes. You don’t have to order it or ask for it, the Grace of our Lord is just there. Now, having been on a Walk to Emmaus, you all know this. You may even have heard the little story I started with about the young man and the grits. But, have you given this glorious gift from God much thought since your pilgrim walk? If you remember from the talk the root meaning of the word grace (from the Greek charis) is “gift”. God, in Christ Jesus, offers us the gift of a relationship that includes salvation, reconciliation, and eternal life (Eph. 2:4-9; 2 Cor.5:18). What is important is that God, through prevenient grace, is calling us to be with him. He created us in his image and likeness and declared it “good”. Now, I don’t know about your reaction to this news, but I remember clearly my own personal reaction. On my pilgrim walk, after this talk, I went immediately to one of the clergy to make sure I understood what I was just told and she confirmed that I understood what was said; God’s love for me is steadfast and complete. It’s always there, and I don’t have to ask for it, it just comes. I invite you, first of all to think about this concept, prevenient grace and what a wonderful gift it is. Second, when you’re in church this coming Sunday, look around you…who among your neighbors and friends, your fellow church members would be enriched by learning that the grace of God is there for them no matter what? And finally, talk to them about attending a Walk to Emmaus. I encourage you to find someone to sponsor on our next three-day adventure with Christ. The talk team is forming. The cooks are gathering. Many of us are already praying for pilgrims we don’t even know yet. And I promise you, Christ will be there to greet each pilgrim by name. Don’t miss this chance to impact a friend with the knowledge of the Prevenient Grace of God.

Do you have a desire to ignite that excitement in others? Then we have just the committee for you: Pre-Emmaus. We are the promotion arm for Emmaus weekends. Our mission is to tell the Walk to Emmaus story to as many churches throughout Arizona as possible. As the board members responsible for this task, we know we can’t possibility accomplish that all by ourselves. We need help from around the state. It will make light work with many hands. If you want to be a vital part of your Emmaus community, get in touch with us and we will discuss our vision for this task. It won’t be hard or involve a lot of time, but it will be so rewarding! So come on, get involved in your Emmaus community and help us promote it state-wide.

A Note from the Chrysalis Community Chair Hello Emmaus/Chrysalis Community. Chrysalis is back in full force and we are looking for people to serve. If you are interested in serving please contact either of the Lay Directors: John Ross (602) 849-5484 or Karen Anderson (520) 991-3833. If you can’t serve the whole weekend we would love to see you at Candlelight on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 8:00pm and for Closing on Sunday, October 14, 2018 at 4:00pm. Chrysalis Flight #39 will be held at Catalina United Methodist Church located at 2700 E. Speedway Blvd., Tucson, AZ. 85716. The weekend starts for Team on Thursday October 11, 2018 and Caterpillars arrive on Friday October 12, 2018 and the weekend will end on Sunday October 14, 2018. We hope to see you there to show these youth your support and love.
