EDITORIAL

Finally, the winter has come! No

more annoying rain and depres-

sions. This beautiful white snow

made the day look longer and

brighter. And so is our new issue

of Insider looks refreshed and full

of different amazing events that are

going to take place in the first days

of December.

Stop sitting at home, wasting your

time on the internet. Wake up; you

are going to miss the whole winter!

Now, when the days are still warm,

the best decision is to go outside

with your friends and enjoy the we-

ather. There are so many activities

that you can choose from at this

period of the year: snowboarding, skiing and

skating.

Looking outside the window we can see that

our neighbors didn`t waste their time sitting

around and doing nothing. Many houses and

flats are beautifully decorated for Christmas,

making the atmosphere even more festive

than ever. There is already a Christmas tree

in the city center of Kouvola, which makes us

realize that the winter holidays are so soon.

If you enjoy wearing beautiful gowns and out-

fits, then you will probably like the events that

December is bringing to us. On December 2,

the annual Independence Day gala will take

place at Kouvola city hall. Another important

and beautiful event is graduation ceremo-

ny that was awaited for so long

by many students. If you want to

participate, register immediately,

otherwise you`ll lose your chance.

Unfortunately, the proximity of

December also means that there

is not so much time left to prepare

for our exams. We should try to

combine our desire for fun with a

need to study, because right now

it is our main duty. But don`t seat

for too long with your nose stuck

in the books - participate in all

the events and activities, that will

bring you joy and happiness. This

will make your student life unfor-

gettable and amazing.

Next week is the week that I’ve been

afraid of. Yes, we have three exams but

no, it’s not the exams that I’m afraid of.

It’s actually the International Day. It me-

ans that the IT arranges a day where all

the cultures can show what they are like.

So pretty similar as the one in KyUAS.

Apart from me, there’s also two lovely

Finnish girls from Tampere. With the girls

we are supposed to present Finland to

everyone in the IT Carlow. To be honest

we are a bit lost about what to tell about

Finland.

During my stay here I have noticed that

Finnish people are too honest. We don’t

have the same kind of proudness of our

background like some other nationali-

ties. When people ask us: “What are the

Finnish people like?” We automatically

answer: “Depressed, quiet and distant.”

If someone tells that they’ve visited Fin-

land, we always ask “why?” We want

to change this with the other Finnish

students here. But what are the great things about Finland that are

not depressing?

One fool-proof idea would be Santa Claus. So we thought that we turn

the whole Finnish stand into a Christmas stand! After a quick thought,

we realised that actually everything about Christmas is borrowed

from some other countries, including the red-dressed Santa Claus.

I was doing some research about the background of Finnish Santa

Claus. However turned out that the original Santa’s whole point was

to “scare children while being drunk”. So that wasn’t as merry idea as

we thought it would be.

Many foreigners are interested in midsummer in Finland as it’s so

different in here. Because of this, we were thinking about introducing

some of our midsummer-traditions. Unfortunately they are probably

too weird to share. Even if collecting seven flowers from the fields

naked sounded quite normal, it’s hard to convince other cultures that

there’s nothing stupid about that.

Living in a different country opens your eyes as you are able to see

how crazy your own traditions are. Unfortunately most of Finnish tra-

ditions include nakedness, depressing stories and alcohol.

stories based on Finnish experience of three wonderful girls

a.k.a Anna, Azzurra and Anke, who not only share the same

university in unfamiliar for them country, but also live together.

They have a lot to tell, so let’s get started!

Girls, first thing first, what do you study at Kyamk as exchange

students?

Anke: I study International Business. Actually, I was supposed

to do the Media studies here in Finland, but my home university

didn’t get that the Media course was dropped, so basically, when

I arrived here, they told me that I needed to choose business

subjects. So, I ended up with Business.

Anna: I’m studying Game Design here, but it happened acciden-

tally because I was not going to study that. So, it’s quite difficult,

but I’m trying my best.

Azzurra: I’m studying Product Design, this program is the same

as I study in my home country, so nothing has changed. However,

what I am doing now is something not very focused on product

design because I wanted to explore something else: web design,

visual communication. I really appreciate the opportunity to take

optional courses at this university because you have a possibility

to study whatever you want.

How is your home university different from this one?

Anke: The education differs because I study International Media

and Entertainment Management at my home university and

right now I study International Business , so the courses are very

different. In my home university I’m used to work from 9am. till

5pm., so I had a lot of work pressure and no personal connections

with teachers and here it’s personal connections way, relaxed

and nicer in a certain way.

Anna: It’s quite different because my “home” university in Poland

is a private one, so the contribution to students is completely

different. I’m studying Film Production there, so I’m really used

to another stuff: not computer designing, but media communica-

tion. It’s something very-very different to this studyng program,

but I’m happy because I experience something new here.

Azzurra: Well, it’s different in several aspects: first of all, we don’t

have workshops at my home university at all. Even if we have,

we have them once a year and they are not so cool as here. Here

we have wooden, metal, plastic ect. workshops, 3D modeling,

which is really amazing because you can create whatever you

want. Secondly, here we do more practical things. In my home

university we are more theoretical. Organisation here is really

good, in my home university it’s not like that.

Why have you chosen Finland for exchange studies, any rea-

sons for that?

Anke: Well, this is actually funny, because I always thought if I

go on exchange, I will choose a very warm country, but it didn’t

work out because I live here. It was probably because I was

supposed to study at Jyväskylä, getting musical education, but

I fould out that if I wanted to go there for this period, they won’t

get subjects so I’ve decided to switch to Kyamk. Why I’ve chosen

Kyamk in specific is for the fact that Kyamk is pretty well-known

in the ERASMUS to be a good school so that’s why I’ve chosen

this university.

Anna: It was the only one option, so in my university there were

no options for me to go on exchange, because fim production is

not that popular. However I’ve seen that Media is studied here,

so I came to my university’s international office and said that I

was going to Kyamk.

Azzurra: I feel closer to Finland. I could have chosen Eng-

land,France or Spain but I felt closer to Finland because of nature

– snow in particular. I don’t know why, but I don’t like warmness

even though I’m Italian. I enjoy Finnish landscapes and trees

everywhere.

What is the wierdest thing you observed so far being as stu-

dents at Kyamk?

Anke: That would probably be my naked neighbour. Well, I would

generally say it is nudity. For my native

country and for me personally it is not nor-

mal when you go to sauna naked or go

swimming naked. For example, in the fres-

hmen party we went to “House of Rock”

and there were naked people and for me it

was like: “What’s going on?”. Also, I had an

accident with my neighbor once : I came

home in the middle of the night and there

was my neighbor who was naked, he was

staring at me…

Anna: Everyting in Finland is so strange.

For example sauna in EVERY building,

even in our university cafeteria! Sauna is

everywhere!!!

Azzurra: I think it is snow. I mean it is

not weird but strange and unusual for

me. We have snow in Italy as well, but

not that much.

How do you usually spend your free

time in Kouvola?

Anke: I live with my roommates,so I

spend most of the time with them: we

go shopping, clubbing, making cakes or

watching movies. It’s all about sociali-

sing with my friends.

Anna: I spend my time with my roomma-

tes: always eating, sleeping, watching movies or

going to some bars, making surprises for every-

body. Our hobby here is making surprises or just

making fun of Ringo and Menno * laughing*.

Azzurra: I spend it with my lovely friends! We

have a good time: we go to the bar, watch

movies, talk about important things. We also

have food and tea together.

Your favourite bar in Kouvola?

Anke: We often spend time in “Bar Q” just to

talk and to play pool, but if we really want to

go out, we go to “Amarillo”.

Anna: The same as my roommates’: “Bar Q”,

we spend a lot of time there, it’s like my native

bar already.

Azzurra: “Bar Q” as well, “Amarillo”. I recom-

mend everyone to visit the first one because

it’s cozy in there.

If Finland was a cake, which kind of cake

would it be?

Anke: Probably, “Pavlova” because this is the

first cake which I made here according to ano-

ther recipe, which I normally don’t do in Nether-

lands. So, this cake is connected to Finland.

Anna: Apple pie! Why apple pie is because

we make it here, I don’t know, three times a

week. If we make an apple pie, it’s not only

one apple pie: is four enough to feed

everyone here?

Azzurra: Cinnamon rolls, but it’s not a

cake.I don’t know why, but I associate

them with Finland. The taste of cinna-

mon remind me of this country!

After finishing your studying period

here, are you planning to visit Finland

again?

Anke: Yes! This is because I’ve decided

not to go to Lapland with some exchan-

ge students, so I want to go there and

because I want to spend more time here.

So, I’m planning to go back!

Anna: Definitely yes because I haven’t

experienced that “Finnish” Finland yet.

Maybe Lapland wil make it clear for me.

I’ve alreay heard that Kouvola is not really

Finnish town. I woud like to go to a small

village just to see real Finnish people.

Azzurra: I woud love to go back to Fin-

land after finishing my studies! I’m

thinking about doing my specialisation

training here or in Sweden. I really love

Finland and I’m happy that I’ve decided

to come here.

GYMNAESTRADA

walks in to the class wearing bright

colours and talks about summer, some

of the students can start to doubt their

mental health. I’m sure that I was one of

those, when this happened to our class.

Anyway after a few sentences I and ever-

yone else were back on the map again.

KatriinaSahala, who is Volunteer Manager

of Gymnastrada gave us one hour presen-

tation about the event and for somewhen

talking about summer, it may seem like a

long way away but for Gymnaestrada ’15

organization warmer weather and sun

seems to be almost too close.

The World Gymnaestrada is the largest

general gymnastics exhibition and it is

held every four years. This year it will be

held in Finland, Helsinki - from 12th of

July till the 18th of July. The difference

between other sporting events is that

on this event, the focus is not on win-

ning medals. The Gymnaestrada is about

Group Performances – some with hund-

reds or even thousands of participants.

Let’s just say that this event will fire up

people together. Imagine 25 000 partici-

pants this year in Helsinki, 3000 of them

from Finland and the rest from 57 other

countries - 5 continents.

The main stage for the event will be Hel-

sinki Exhibition centre but during the one

week festival Olympic Stadium, Helsinki

Ice Hockey arena, Linnanmäki amusement

park and many other places will be shoo-

ting different shows and events from dawn

until sunset.

If you are 16 years old, you can speak Fin-

nish or English, you are positive and mo-

tivated and you would love to share this

international experience why not to apply

for volunteering? The event lasts for one

week but you can apply only for a few days

as well.

As a volunteer you get free ticket for public

transport inside in Helsinki, one hot meal

and coffee every work-day, clothing, trai-

ning for your work and testimonial and the

closing party at the end. When working in

such an international environment you can

also use and improve language skills, enjoy

the atmosphere and make new friends.

Official languages for the event are Spanish

and English, but there will be many other

languages to speak as well.

GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY JAM

Text&Photos:Bac LeSaving the world in 48 hours? Sounds like beco-

ming Superman (well, except wearing his distin-

ctive pants). Actually, you don’t need superpower

to do that. Simply joining Global Sustainability

Jam 2014

What the heck is a Jam? Each year, people who

are interested in creating new thing meet at loca-

tions all over the world without knowing the the-

me topic. During the weekend of the Jam session,

everyone will be contacted with other Jammers

around the world to exchange ideas (salute to the

Internet!), getting advice and developing their

concepts. Of course, the fun part is not missing.

Last weekend, our university also joined the Glo-

bal Sustainability Jam 2014 in Paja and had been

working for the whole weekend for the event. Surprisingly, we were

the only ones participating from Finland! This year Jam theme was

the picture of four footsteps marking from 1 to 4 and no more or less.

There was no right or wrong answer so Jammers could do whatever

they think the picture is.

You can see the work done by the students who were joining the jam

on our Insider Facebook page and it’s definitely worth watching. And

also all the prototypes and the results coming from other jam places

around the world can be found on the website (www.globalsustain-

abilityjam.org).

In case you missed this one, there are more jams coming soon. The

original one – Global Service Jam, will be in the last days of February

and this one is definitely the biggest jam of the year. If you like mee-

ting new people, working together and having fun – joining one Jam

session is the good choice!

Bowl, foil, mixer, a baking dish, oven, rolling pin

1. Mix the curd with softened butter. Add flours

and baking powder. Stir until smooth. Wrap it into

foil and put to the fridge before rolling with rolling

pin.

2. Roll the base into thin sheets and shape squares.

Cut the corners and make them look like stars. Add

3. Grease stars with eggs and bake in 200c for 12

to 15 minutes. Put powdered sugar on top.

Lloyd and Harry are back after 20 years. Still dumb and still dumber, they go on a journey in

search of a long lost daughter, with their standard shenanigans and „accidents“along the way.

Before you ever consider watching this movie in the cinema, you need to get the 1994 one

and watch it. Without having watched it, you won‘t really get a lot of things they do or say.

It is really continuous in many aspects, that it is an absolute necessity.

Having sad that; this movie sucked. It should have stayed buried in 1994 when „poop“ and

„fart“ jokes were still funny and new and exciting. Cheap humour and, frankly, annoying

jokes just made me uninterested in the entire story. Lloyd selfishness is extremely irritating

and most definitely not funny and in more than one occasions the jokes just go too far.

However, if you are 10-16 years old, you will have a blast. I am sure that I would love this

movie if I was younger and still in the mind set of a silly teenager, just like when I saw the

1994 one, and enjoyed myself then.

Now with all the bad stuff out of our way, there are some goofily positive things, though

gross and inappropriate will make you giggle a bit, or at least feel embarrassed for them. If

you like stupidity and consider farts a hilarious event, do go see this one!
