Now offering carpet cleaning A very special assembly was held at Moorlands on Wednesday 8th July to celebrate Learners of The Year and the Core Values of the school. Members of The Belton and District Historical Society presented the Learners awards, which they had kindly donated. After the ceremony, the award winners and their families had tea and cakes in the school dining hall. Mr Lee, Headteacher, said “It was a wonderful occasion for the whole school community. We had all the children and staff from the Village Green Children’s Centre and Nursery at the celebration, as well as parents and carers of the children who had won an award. It was a bit of a squeeze, but it was important to bring everybody together in this way.” The History Society is pleased to have been involved with the Learners of The Year for the fourth year and looks forward to continuing with this in the future. WATCH YOUR SPEED!What does Belton have two of and Burgh Castle one – the answer is new traffic reactive SAM2 anti speeding flashing signs which are now in place and will be rotated round various locations in the two parishes on a regular basis, they will act as a speed deterrent and hopefully will make the parishes safer for both motorists and pedestrians. Half the cost for each Parish came from the Norfolk County Council Parish Partnership Scheme and Belton were also fortunate to receive a further grant from Councillor Adrian Myers Great Yarmouth Borough Council ward budget.

VILLAGEVOICE

AUGUST 2015

YOUR VILLAGE VOICEHopefully you all liked what you saw with our changes last month, as mentioned last time we are now able to spread our photographs throughout Village Voice and put picture items on the correct pages such as those for the JGI and New Road, it also gives general flexibility with the layout.

Please could we ask for care when taking photographs, we have had to discard or limit the size of some pictures this month due to them not being very clear, we do try our best to sort out what we can but it is not always possible to resolve all the issues, but please don’t be put off – photographs brighten the pages.

We will now be working on issue 175, September 2015 which for me personally as editor will be the start of Year 5, yes this edition sees the end of my fourth year- something that I never expected when I took over for a couple of months therefore I would just like to thank everybody, advertisers, contributors and deliverers for remaining with us, some of you have indeed been with us for the whole term, now over 15 years!

DOWN THE GARDEN PATHAugust is the time for keeping the garden ‘shipshape’. It is an ideal time to trim hedges as by now the main breeding season for most garden birds is over. The RSBP recommend that hedges should not be cut between March and the end of July. It is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built. It will be an intentional act, for example, if you or your neighbour knows there is an active nest in the hedge and still cut the hedge, damaging or destroying the nest in the process. If the hedge forms a boundary between you and your neighbour then each is responsible for their side of the hedge. Hedges, overhanging branches and boundaries are one, if not the most, contentious issues between neighbours As reported in The Guardian some years ago ‘Humans have the territorial instincts of jungle beasts.’ Boundary disputes costing thousands of pounds in legal and surveyors’ fees are often fought over a few centimetres. A spiral of charges can be set in train over ownership of a fence, overhanging branches, dense hedges, party walls, shared drainage or driveways. So it is best if you can both come to an amicable arrangement over any hedges, overhanging branches etc.

Now is the time to prune many of the early flowering deciduous shrubs. As many shrubs have their own requirements then it is best to find a book from the library or to purchase ‘The World’s Best- Selling Book on Flowering Shrubs’ ‘The Flowering Shrub Expert’ by Dr. D. G. Hessayon. It is inexpensive and clearly sets out with illustrations of where to plant, what the soil preferences are, when to prune and even how to propagate. It even gives lists of shrubs to encourage wildlife and what fragrant shrubs to grow.

Next week we will be visiting the trial grounds of one of our nursery suppliers where we are promised a review of over 200 new plants for 2016! We are promised :

• Daily presentations on new varieties,• Innovative colour themed patio gardens• An interactive retail plant zone• 700 experimental Annual and Perennial varieties• A showcase of market leading basket and container plants• Tomato trials and fruit tasting• Patio vegetables• Perennial gardens

All this in over 10 acres of grounds! Just hope I can find the stamina to survive................

Archie and Annie were married on January 29th 1977 their first home was a farm cottage with a large garden where they grew vegetables and kept 12 Bantams in a chicken hut built by Archie. They also had a Jack Russell who they named Heidi, the young couple were very proud at their attempt at living the good life. One problem that they had was escaping Bantams, with the help of Heidi they would be rounded up from the local fields. At this time Archie was working on the restoration of an old house on the Haverhill side of Bury with a carpenter called Winkle. One lunchtime Archie and Winkle were enjoying their packed lunch, when Winkle peered into Archies lunch box, he told Archie that letting Annie buy elaborate cakes for work meant that Archie must have been handing over too much housekeeping money and their marriage would never work. Archie, quick off the mark and proud of his young wife, told winkle all the eclairs, flap jack, bread rolls and currant buns were baked in the Rayburn by Annie , being fuelled by the wood that he cut for her. Winkle didn’t believe a word as he thought everything came from the bakers and had cost a lot. Archie and Annie went on to have two children, the youngest only a few months old when they moved to Belton in 1981.

A note from the Editor – This is the last of the tales of young Archie Cobbles, we would like to thank Archie for sharing his memories with us over the last 18 months we hope that in due course he will bring us up to date with some more of his tales.

Village Voice - August 2015

BELTON CHURCH YOUTH GROUPS

MESSY CHURCH - It was on one of the hottest days of the year that Messy Church met at Bell Lane Park to worship God, pray and learn about the story of Esther. We had a BBQ and enjoyed exploring how God used Esther, a Jewish orphan who won the heart of a Persian king thousands of years ago, to save the Jewish nation from destruction. How amazing that God can use us, regardless of how insignificant we might feel, to do incredible things we could never do alone! In the new academic year, Messy Church will be meeting once each half term; date to be announced.

CORNERSTONE / THE HUB - Cornerstone and the Hub have been meeting fortnightly, and will have their last session of the term on Friday 17th July. Since it was launched in March, Cornerstone has regularly had a good number of attendees who spend time playing games, Ping-Pong, and pool, listening to music, and enjoying ice cream milkshakes!

The Hub, although not as well attended, has nevertheless been enthusiastically supported by young people who describe the club as ‘awesome!’ Monopoly, ice-cream and craft were the order of the day at the start of July, after another very hot day which left everyone rather drained. We would love to see more young people joining us in September - anybody of high school age is very welcome to come, and we are in the process of planning some rather interesting and unusual activities... keep your eyes open for information! Cornerstone and The Hub will re-start on Friday September 11th.

YOUTH GROUP - Older members of the Church Youth Group have been saying their farewells to high school and looking forward to college , while some newer members of the group are nervously awaiting the start of their time at high school in September. We have spent time talking about God’s continuing presence on our journey through life, even when he feels distant. He is there to help guide us through times of transition, and the Bible contains many words of encouragement and reassurance, many of which we found by doing a giant board game that filled the church!

Being a young Christian in a school or college environment is never easy; there are many temptations and pressures to face. But we hope that, as our young people meet regularly, they will be able to support one another, pray for each other, and see what the God’s Word (the Bible) has to say to help. It’s not all serious though - the autumn term will have the usual games, trips and social meetings too! After all, ‘The joy of the Lord is our strength’ - it’s good to have fun knowing God is with us.

Village Voice - August 2015

PRAYER TENTFor the past week, I have had the privilege of running a Prayer Tent in the courtyard at Moorlands Academy. A Prayer Tent? I hear you ask; What on earth is that?! Put simply, it is a tent (or rather, a gazebo), in which people can take time out of their day to it and talk with God in creative ways. Prayer for many people involves bowed heads, closed eyes, and muttering words learned by rote or chiming in with a large ‘AMEN’ at the end of something they didn’t really listen to.

But I believe that prayer should be far more exciting than that! Spending time with the creator of the universe and having the privilege of communicating with him doesn’t sound dull - and creating a special place and encouraging people to explore what prayer can be about was at the heart of the Prayer Tent. Of course,

not all pupils or staff at Moorlands would describe themselves as Christian, but this was never a barrier to engaging with the activities on offer in the Tent. The vast majority of people are open to the idea of ‘something bigger than us’, and the time spent in the Prayer Tent could be used simply to ponder our position in the world, and to think about the beautiful world around us.

The Prayer Tent was themed on ‘Creation’. There were images of animals, animal print cushions, and opportunities to draw and colour birds, fish, trees and flowers. Children and adults alike were invited to add raindrops to an umbrella, expressing the things in life that made them sad or angry. There was the chance to share those things for which people were grateful, to cover a trellis in flowers and leaves. A jug of water and some dispersible tablets were also used to demonstrate what Christians believe happens when we apologise to God - our sins ‘fizz away’ and no longer exist! Pupils were invited to consider what they would like to ask God - whether or not they believe he exists, what are their burning big questions? We gathered quite a universe of stars with some quite deep philosophical queries written on them! Finally, there was a sandpit with animals and figures which allowed the children a chance to play and explore the story of creation; this was incredibly popular with all year groups!

Whether or not you would consider these activities ‘prayer’, they were undoubtedly enjoyable and the children were sad to see the Prayer Tent zipped up at the end of the week. It was a pleasure to introduce children to more creative, interactive ways of communicating with God and exploring the creation story that didn’t involve closing eyes or even using words. I firmly believe that God loves to see His children of all ages engage with creation with joy, in the way that I saw so many pupils at Moorlands engage with the activities in the Prayer Tent. Prayer should not be a burden; it was intended as a blessing, and as prayer is a core part of the Christian faith it would be great to see it continue to bless the school community.

BELTON F.C.Fantastic news as Belton FC re-sign Danny Haworth.  Danny returns and will assume the Captaincy of the club. This is a massive appointment for the team following the loss of Ryan Gowing last term.

The squad have recently started pre season training on Wednesdays at Lynn Grove.  The sessions run from 7:30-8:30 pm.  The club have signed new players and will continue to meet prospective players via training. With some of the old guard returning soon, it looks like an exciting season ahead.

Sadly the club did not gain promotion to the Anglian Combination league despite our efforts on the pitch. So another season in the Great Yarmouth borough league beckons. Great news on the media front as the club website has passed the 25,000 mark for hits.  A fantastic number of views for our little village team.

COUNCIL MEETING JUNE 16THTen Parish Councillors, County Councillor Colin Aldred, Borough Councillor Adrian Myers and three members of the public attended the June 16th meeting of Belton with Browston Parish Council, John Rudrum was in the chair.

Councillor Myers reported that the portfolio recording all the local problems with flooding and sewage that he and colleagues are compiling is in the final stages, once complete it will be sent to the Water Consumer Council, he also reported that there were to be discussions at the Borough Council about the possibility of reinstating the Ward budgets from the current financial year.

The leaves have been cleared on the footpath that runs from Heather Road to Bell Lane. GYB Services have stated that it the Norfolk County Council responsibility to strim back the grass on the triangle on Beccles Road, Belton, however the Chairman stated he would ask the Community Caretaker to do this on Friday if it had not been done by then. It was reported that the rose bed near the shops had new been weeded and looks a lot better.

There will be a Bell Lane Project site meeting on Wednesday 8th July at 6.00pm, subject to the weather, if not a meeting will be held at the New Road Centre at

that time.Information on the possibility of the council preparing a Neighbourhood plan received from GYBC had been distributed by the clerk to all members prior to the meeting. After a long discussion by all members on the points related to undertaking such a plan two votes were taken. The idea of a plan backed by the council was not supported however this does not prevent another group from looking into the idea.

It was generally agreed by all members that all sources should be used to display Parish Council and New Road information including both the Parish Council and Belton and Browston community run web sites. It was agreed information for the site should be obtained by the sites administrator. If any councillors have any information they would like published on the sites it should be forwarded on in the usual manor.

After general discussion about the possibility of the council having only one full council meeting per month it was agreed to defer the matter to a later meeting for more information to be obtained.

There was one new planning application, no objections, subject to the views of neighbours for rear extensions at 8 St Christopher Close. The Borough Council had granted plans for a side bathroom extension at 59 Heather Road, Belton.

COUNCIL MEETING JULY 7THThere were ten members of the council plus County Councillor Colin Aldred, Borough Councillor Adrian Myers and four members of the public at the first July meeting of Belton with Browston Parish Council, John Rudrum was in the chair.

Concerns were raised by a resident over the need to leave his garden waste bin on the public path for collection, he was worried about the safety angle and this was left with Councillor Myers to investigate.

The crime figures were read out by the clerk, six reports in June, a break in via a skylight at the Compass Centre, two wall vents damaged at Moorlands School, £200 taken from a driving range machine at Browston Hall, also a vehicle hit by a golf ball there. There was a brick thrown through a car window on Station Road north and cash taken from a wallet at an Amhurst Gardens property.

Members accepted the resignation of the booking clerk at the New Road Centre, all enquiries and requests to book the centre should now be directed to the parish clerk

on 01493 602960 or e-mail [email protected]

It was reported that there should be a pharmacy back in the village, at the former supermarket on station Road North some time in August, most of the delays had now been resolved.

There had been incidents of off road bikes being ridden on Sandy Lane and a general increase in fly tipping throughout the parish which was causing concern and extra work for the community caretaker.

There had been a response from the Compass Centre who have stated that their staff have been asked to keep older children off the young childrens play equipment after reports of recent misuse.

There were three planning decisions from the Borough Council, Conversion of a barn to holiday accommodation at Crossways, Cherry Lane, Browston was refused, however garage conversion to living accommodation and roof alterations at 125 Station Road North along with rear extensions and a pitched roof at 8 St Christophers Close were both approved.

LOCAL BUS AND RAIL INFORMATION

ENTUA(East Norfolk Transport Users Association) is a voluntary independent body which monitors bus and rail provision in the East Norfolk Area. Please visit our web site www.entua.org.uk/ENTUAs meeting with First to discuss the merits of a new bus service running between Belton and the James Paget

Hospital along the new A12/A143 link road was postponed until 14th. July, too late for this issue. However with the planned Sainsburys Store not going ahead this casts a shadow over its funding. As mentioned in previous issues, all the bus services provided by First Eastern Counties in the Great Yarmouth area are operated on a commercial basis receiving no subsidy from the County Council, therefore the company will need reassurance that any new service introduced will cover its costs from fare paying passengers. If Sainsburys had gone ahead the subsidy they would have paid to the bus company would have gone a long way in supporting a twice-hourly service linking Bradwell, Burgh Castle and Belton with the James Paget Hospital along the new link road.Unfortunately we live in a society which is dominated by car dependency, people

use cars regardless of whether it is economically beneficial. Therefore it is hard to see that there would be sufficient demand for a new bus service until at least most of the 800 houses planned to be built off the link road are in use.Since deregulation of bus services in the 1980s, buses are run (in the main) by private companies and these companies are accountable to shareholders who want to see a return on their investments, which means loss-making bus services do not figure in their calculations. Most of you will remember Service 607 which operated from Belton through Bradwell to the James Paget Hospital between 2000 – 2003. This service was supported by a government grant for the three years that it operated, but as soon as the grant finished it was obvious that the service was not used sufficiently to cover its costs and it was withdrawn. It is all very well for residents to say we need

a bus service to the hospital and then carry on using their cars! Having said that, the local bus managers are keen to find some way of providing a link road service and ENTUA are hopeful of reaching a solution with them. We will do our best for a successful outcome.A reminder that ENTUAs public meeting will be held in St. Pauls Hall (corner of Caister Rd./Salisbury Rd.) at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 11th. August. Presentations will be made by Anglian Bus, Abellio Greater Anglia (rail), First Eastern Counties and Norfolk County Councils Transport Department.ENTUA needs more members – if you have an interest in local public transport, please join us, all we ask is a minimum £5.00 donation per annum to cover the cost of printing/postage of the quarterly newsletter – If you are interested please write to ENTUA, 18 Wensum Way, Belton, Gt. Yarmouth, NR31 9NY.Tony Grice.

BOHEMIANS FC

At the time of writing we have just about recovered from our successful tournament at New Road on June 21st. We had 50 teams from across the County turn up to play. Teams from Cromer, Thetford, Norwich and the local area meant 350 players took part with all their parents and siblings supporting and cheering them on. With over 400 cars on the field, bouncy slides and domes to entertain the younger players when not playing for their teams, Errea football kits and training wear from our friends at East Point Sports, there was plenty to keep everyone busy. Thanks to Lamarti for being our ice cream associates for the day and to our volunteers in the control room, drinks and barbecue, without their help the event would not have been so successful.

We are already planning for next season and looking for some additional players for our existing teams at u10, u12 and u16 (school years 5,6, 7 & 10). We are also hoping to start some younger teams at u7 & u8 (school years 2 & 3) from participants of our Saturday morning soccer school, but we need more players before we can form both of these. If you are looking to take part in football for fitness or looking to join a team as part of a recognised FA Charter

Standard Development club, please come along to New Road on Saturday mornings at 10am or call our club secretary Alan on 07787 911403 or welfare officer Matt 07962 001140. We are also looking for additional adult volunteers to help run our teams as managers, coaches or team assistants. If these roles appeal to you, please call Alan or Matt on the above numbers.

Team training sessions are well attended and our midweek sessions continue on Wednesday evenings through to late September and on Saturday mornings as usual, all at New Road. Over the coming weeks, the club will be carrying out some remedial work on the pitch areas, moving existing goals and installing new youth goals for our u11-u14 teams and training equipment which have together cost the club over £2100. We have only been able to order this new equipment and goals by the achievements of our club fundraising team outdoing themselves with the presentation night raffle last May, the tournament organisers running a profit this year and ably supported by our parents with all the sponsored events their children have participated in over the last few months. A great effort by everyone involved at Bohemians FC. I know we ask a lot sometimes, but these are the rewards.

BELTON CRICKET CLUBAt last the sun came out and with it Belton began to fulfil their potential.

In the Norfolk League, the month started slowly with a shoddy performance at Cringleford leading to an embarrassing loss. Chasing 212 to win Belton fell 15 runs short despite half centuries from Chris Cropley and Adam Savoury. Paul Hodds, making a welcome return from injury, picked up three wickets.

The next Saturday was damp, dreary and wet throughout the county. Undeterred, the game against Caister went ahead thanks to the efforts of the players and the GYBS ground staff. In a match reduced to 40 overs a side, George Savoury and Cameron Nichols led the Belton attack in restricting Caister to 187 for 7. Abdur Rheman led the run chase with 79 not out and the support of Wayne Goreham (61) enabled Belton to surpass the total with four deliveries in hand.

The short trip to Kirkley was rewarding with another win notched up. The home side were dismissed in 38 overs for just 121. Wayne Goreham finished on 70 not out and he got good support from brother Richard (29 not out) as the small total was achieved in only 25 overs. Sajid Ali’s 4 for 22 led the Belton attack. On a baking hot day at the Common, league leaders Happisburgh were the visitors and the second defeat of the month followed as Belton fell 67 runs short on 188. Wayne Goreham continued his rich vein of form with 67 and he got some support from

Cameron Nichols (44 not out) but the Happisburgh total was always too far in the distance.

Finally, on a blisteringly hot day the experienced Chris Cropley led the way to a win against Rollesby with 68 not out. George Savoury and Paul Hodds both took three wickets to restrict the visitors to 125 before Cropley’s innings sewed up the win.

In the Mid-Norfolk Sunday league Belton beat Chapelfield in a game of two halves. On the ropes at the mid-point, Belton were in danger of surrendering, but Azam had other ideas. His quick-fire 88 turned the match on its head and enabled Belton to post 206 from 40 overs. Kevin Comer’s four wickets for just 12 runs headed off any attempt by the visitors to get in the game and they were our for just 97 in reply.

Belton returned from their 140-mile round trip to Narborough victorious by 65 runs on another hot afternoon in North Norfolk. Thanks to Adam Savoury’s innings of 91, Belton finished their 40 overs on 199. In reply Coby Stanford took 4 for 9 to help restrict the home side to 134 for 9.

The Belton 100 Club is seeking further subscribers, it costs just £20 a year and big prizes are on offer. Details from Wally Ladmore (01493 722424) or check out the link on our website http://www.beltoncricket.co.uk/100-club/ This is an excellent way to support your local club.

PRODUCE & CRAFT SHOWThe 25th Belton and Lothingland Produce and Crafts Show was held at the JGI, Belton on June 28th .

The show was slightly earlier than usual this year and that coupled with a cold Spring led to a decline in produce entries although flower class entries held up however there was also a reduction in the photographic entries. Any disappointment in adult entries was compensated by a large increase in childrens entries, special thanks to Moorlands Primary Academy for theirs along with Belton Scouts and cubs and the Belton St. John Ambulance badgers group, with these increases the total was almost identical to last year and the quality was the usual high standard that we have come to expect over the years.

There was a large raffle, thanks to everyone who donated prizes including Tesco Belton, Reveal at Bradwell and Fritton Nurseries, thanks also to everyone who turned out to view on Sunday afternoon, the hall was absolutely packed. At the end of the viewing Belton’s Rector, The Rev Rosie Bunn presented most cups and trophies while Mary Cubitt presented the Bryan Cubitt Cup and Faye Green the John Green Memorial Cup.

Thank you to all who took part or attended and to the show committee, the W.I helpers in the kitchen, the judges as well as the JGI Trustees for their continued support of the event.

BELTON & DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOC.After a very interesting talk on the History of Bee Keeping in June we will have had a talk on the History of the Broads between this edition of Village Voice going to the printers and it being delivered to you.

We take a break from events in August but are fortunate to have the JGI monthly Coffee Morning Raffle in the hall on Saturday August 8th (10am – Noon) please come and support us.

Mardle Day - On Sunday September 20th, also at the JGI we have another of our Mardle or History Days when we fill the hall with old local photos, postcards maps and documents along with a selection of artefacts to look at . The hall will be open from 11.00am till late afternoon for you to drop in and take a look, a very informal day. This year we are keeping the display “up” on Monday morning when we will welcome the top year from Moorlands Academy along with some of their staff – a good chance for the pupils (and staff!) to take a look back.

Our Web Site -- www.beltonhistory.co.uk, has been re-launched with a user friendly front page leading to all the articles from one page, also visit our gallery of many local photographs, why not take a look - there is also a list of our events for the remainder of 2015.

The Society is always pleased to receive any old documents and photographs which can be copied and returned to you Our chairman, Ian Walker can also be contacted on 07887 640385. Finally, if you have any local stories from the past why not jot them down, we are always interested in recording these before they get lost forever, you might just have that missing link to something from years gone by.

1ST BELTON GUIDES1st Belton Guides spent an evening with Gorleston and Wroxham Guides at Great Yarmouth Retro Skate. The girls all had a great time and joined in with games organised by Retro Skate staff.

We all enjoyed a fun night with 1st Bradwell Brownies at their Independence Day themed evening where we cooked on BBQs and had camp fire songs. Guides are in the process of organising a return visit for the Brownies to join us at Burgh Castle for an evening.

For our end of term evening we went to Pizza Hut for a meal. This was also to celebrate our three senior Guides, Saffron, Eilish and Tayla achieving their Baden Powell Award. This is the highest award they can gain as Guides and they are the first members of our unit to reach this goal. Well done to all three girls, we are extremely proud of them. The awards were presented by Great Yarmouth Division Commissioner Hannah Webb. They each received a Girlguiding bracelet as a leaving gift from the unit. We will miss them. They are all joining the new Senior Section Unit for girls aged 14 + opening in September at St Mary’s Church Hall, Southtown Road.

We were also delighted that Hannah was able to present Louise Wallis with her Adult Leadership Qualification. Congratulations to Louise for all her hard work.

Guides will be back from the summer break on Tuesday 8th September.

Girls aged 10 to 14 are welcome to come along for a trial meeting and also adults over 18 if you are interested in helping at meetings either on a regular or occasional basis. We meet each Tuesday at Burgh Castle Village Hall, 6.45 - 8.30 term time only. For further details please contact Linda 01493 667311 or 07919620759

BRANDON LEWIS M.PSpare a thought for the Chancellor

of the Exchequer. He spends weeks, if not months, beavering away with an army of civil servants preparing his set piece Budget speech. He is on his feet for around an hour in the House of Commons, presenting the Government’s economic and financial plans. Yet in that time he only has the chance to highlight the eye-catching proposals, such as the reduction in the country’s unsustainable benefit bill or the introduction of a Living Wage. Even then the media will focus on specific areas in their headlines and comment columns, ignoring much else.

In this month’s Village Voice I want to talk about some of those unnoticed changes, which will make a real difference to people living in this area. Fuel duty remains frozen for another year, a continuation of a policy that has put an end to Labour’s fuel escalator. I was part of the original campaign that convinced George Osborne to help motorists by cutting and then freezing fuel taxes.

And although drivers with low-emission cars will now have to pay car tax, for the first time since 1937 this money is ring-fenced for our roads. I receive many complaints about the poor state of roads, often with the phrase, “what do I pay my car tax for?” Well up until now we weren’t paying it to build new roads or repair existing ones, the money simply disappeared into the Treasury to be spent on other things. News of a Living Wage grabbed the headlines. This will help thousands of low-waged workers in the Great Yarmouth area, particularly those in the retail and tourist sectors. But the threshold for income tax is also increasing, meaning everyone in work can keep more of their hard-earned cash before paying any tax. That means a basic-rate taxpayer will be £80 better off next year and it’s the first-step in fulfilling our election promise to raise the threshold to £12,500 by the end of this Parliament.

And finally, the independent Office of Budget Responsibility forecast that our economy is set to grow faster than America, faster than Germany and twice as fast as France. Vindication that the policy of tackling the deficit and cutting back on unsustainable government spending is the right one.

REV ROSIE WRITES...... Today, as I write, I have been

to a funeral of a family friend and on the radio there was news of the fatal accident at the factory in Norwich. This coming so soon after the massacre on the beach in Sousse, Tunisia (a beach Tim and I have enjoyed on our holidays) and the 10-year anniversary of the 7/7 bombings (a day when we knew our son, Andy, was travelling through London at that time). It got me thinking about how we look at life and death; the fact that when we wake up in the morning and go about our daily business we never know what is going to happen to us, good or bad. Thankfully, for most of us, life will be ordinary and we might even have a good day.

Christians believe that our future is in God’s hands. There is a trusting relationship based on the hope of the gospel. The message: God loves us. He has our best at heart. So much so

Jesus, his Son, came to earth as a human being to reveal that love and the character of God. His death on the cross takes away our sinfulness and unworthiness and opens the way for us to experience and live eternal life. That life is in relationship with God in our life on earth and continues past death into eternity.

Being a Christian doesn’t stop us from experiencing all the pains and frustrations of life; sometimes they are excruciating, but that hope of the complete peace in God’s presence the fullness of time keeps us going.

As we remember our loved ones, who have already died, there is the future joy of being re-united. Yes, of course I miss both my parents but I am grateful for the peace I have knowing that they are at peace.

On Sunday 12th July, we rededicated the two war memorials in Burgh Castle Church following refurbishment work in the north aisle of the church. We remembered the lives laid down in the fight for freedom for our country; the costliness of the death and the hope of resurrection. We thanked God for all who, over

the years, had made it possible for these memorials to be a reminder of loved-ones lost who we never knew; we sang hymns often sung on Remembrance Sunday that spoke of our thanks to and hope in God, and we prayed for the peace of the world – in our own lives, the life of our community, and nation – in God’s eternal and everlasting hands.

BURGH CASTLE PLANT SALEThe Plant Sale has been running for over 15 years, and is one of the most popular annual events at Burgh Castle, building up a reputation of value for money. This year’s attendance was quite exceptional and with the car park full, the Playing Field gates were opened to accommodate more vehicles. In addition to a wide variety of plants there were fancy goods, bric-a-brac and book stalls and of course the usual raffle and refreshments. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard , supplying plants, helping on the day and supporting. Special thanks to Charlie and Jasmine of Burgh Castle Nurseries for their very generous donation of plants. The magnificent sum of £560 was raised on the day but there will be further donations. All proceeds will be donated to the Parish Church general funds.

BURGH CASTLE FORT SITEA note from the Norfolk Archaeological Trust

As visitors to Burgh Castle Roman Fort may have noticed, two of the cycle racks on the Trust car park were damaged in July. Although it is not clear what the circumstances were, the event happened in the evening and the car involved was badly damaged and abandoned in the car park over night.  Groups of scooter riders have been visiting the car park in the evenings leaving a lot of skid marks in the gravel.  There has also been an increase in litter left in the car park during the evenings. The Trust is concerned that these evening activities are a potential nuisance for the local community. We want to minimise the potential for accidents and injury and further damage to the car park. As a result we will start locking the car park at 6.00pm from August 1st. We’re sorry for the inconvenience this may cause but hope visitors will understand that we have to put safety first. The Fort site will still be open for visitors on foot until dusk.

NORFOLK CHURCHES CYCLE RIDE This year the Cycle Ride is on Saturday September 12th when Paul Nicholls will again be riding on behalf of Burgh Castle Church and will be seeking sponsorship around the village over the next few weeks. Paul always does so well, please do support him if you can and remember if you are a UK tax payer just by signing the appropriate column on the form your donation can be gift aided. this means the church can claim an extra 25% (25p on every £1 donated.)

BURGH CASTLE PARISH COUNCIL There were six parish councillors, Borough Councillor Brian Lawn and eleven members of the public at the July 13th meeting of Burgh Castle Parish Council, Trevor Greenacre was in the chair.

In the public section it was pointed out that the yellow no parking lines have still not been repainted on Butt Lane outside Castle View and another resident raised concerns that the drain gulleys at Stepshort, by the dyke are full of rubbish and need pumping out.

There was a discussion over the positions for the SAM2 flashing speed indicators, a resident stated that it was impossible to get any excess speed up at Stepshort where the sign is at present due to the unlevel surface but this was disputed by others. The County Council have refuse permission for one of the alternating locations for the unit to be on Mill Road due to the varying speed limits however at the public’s request a second check on the possibility of a unit on this road is to be requested.

The proposal from Norfolk Archaeological Trust to close the Roman Fort car park from 6.00pm daily commencing on August 1st. due to evening vandalism was discussed, members were against this as it will lead to parking on Butt Lane which is heavily used by pedestrians during the holiday season and there is no footpath for their safety. The church triangle will become congested along with more traffic using Church Road which is a residential road with a large number of young children living there and that will also be a source of danger. These are all points which the car park had been installed by the Trust to reduce, members agreed to send their concerns to The Trust and advise the police of the situation.

There were no objections to building changes to Meadow View on Lords Lane which is currently being brought back into a habitable state after many years, members felt the site was large enough to accommodate any alterations.

Members received a report on the Broads Authority’s plans for a landscaping scheme for the Broads as a whole, they are applying to the Heritage Lottery Fund for £2.6m which with £1.9m in cash and kind will lead to 38 projects being in place up by 2022.

Members discussed heating the village hall, councillor Foster suggested a heat pump system as that is very effective, information on this and Lottery Grants was given to the Hall management committee with a request that they report back to the next council meeting in September.

Councillor Foster also reported that he had a meeting with First Bus over services to the James Paget Hospital area via the new link road, he had been told that there would be a service to and from Belton however he asked that Burgh Castle be brought into the plans, during the councillors discussions it was pointed out that any doctors surgery moves to Beacon Park or the Hospital site are only at the consultation stage at present.

There is no Council meeting in August, the next one is on Monday September 14th at the Village Hall.

Village Voice - August 2015

MALCOLMS NATURE JOTTINGSRED KITE  (Milvus milvus) - It was to take me 75 years to see my first Red Kite, on July 7th this year at Gigrin Farm, Rhaydader, South Wales I was to observe hundreds. The middle ages was the zenith of Red Kites in both town and village, together with wild pigs and ravens this was the only means of keeping London streets clean. By the 16th century huge numbers had been killed and in 1810 the the invention of the breech loading gun was the final nail in the Red Kites coffin. In 1871 the birds were extinct from England and Scotland, in Wales the story was the same and only a handful of pairs remained.

They were reintroduced to England in 1989 and 1992 from South Wales stock. Red Kites are identified from all other birds of prey by their long, deeply forked tail, rufous plumage and white patches on the undersides of their wings. Nests are always built in trees, often in forks up to 20 metres from the ground, mostly in Oaks, but sometimes in Birch, Beech or Alder. Between one and three eggs are normally laid in early April and incubation takes about 30 days.

Gigrin Farm Red Kite Feeding Centre is managed by Chris Powell and became a feeding centre in 1993, from around a dozen birds that year to 600 in Winter also in conjunction with The Red Kite Trust the farm serves as the rehabilitation centre for red Kites.

There are five viewing hides to chose from, my godson and I sat in number three, half an hour before feeding time hundreds of these majestic birds flew overhead, waiting to eat. Promptly at 3pm a tractor appeared with the beef which was thrown out near to where we sat. We were then treated to one of the most spectacular sights in the bird world we had ever seen. Some Kites swooped and grasped the meat in their talons before making off with it held tightly beneath their tails, they were so fast it was difficult to observe, they can eat while flying. For one of natures most amazing sights it was well worth the entrance fee of £5.00.

young at heart?

YOUNG AT HEARTAs you read this, we will truly be in Summer (Or is it raining, I wonder?).

It is so good to be back at Young at Heart after almost a year away. They are like family to me, and I’m sure to others too. We meet every Tuesday morning ( we are often in the Church now as we are outgrowing the lounge!) and would welcome anyone who wanted to join us for coffee and chinwag - just come along sometime between 10.00a.m. - 12 noon. We are an open group, whether you are a member of the Church or not. On the first Tuesday of each month, there is a traditional Holy Communion at 11.00a.m. for those who wish to take part. We have a particularly exciting event at the end of July when one of our members has chosen to be baptised. This will take place during the Sunday morning service 26th July. Hopefully more on that next month. Then later, in September we look forward to a boat trip as part of our ever-growing social calendar. On a personal note, may I say “thank” you to so many people in the village who sent me their good wishes over the year, I really appreciated it. It is great to be able to report that I am making good progress.

1ST BELTON SCOUTSBeavers -The Beavers have been busy working for their gardening activity badge. They have grown Livingstone Daisy and French Marigolds from seed which when they were big enough they spent an evening planting out on Rectory Corner for everyone to enjoy. The Beavers then walked back to the Scout HQ doing a litter pick on the way and were shocked to collect two carrier bags full of rubbish.

The Beavers have also been busy practising their piece for the AGM.

Cubs -The cubs this last month have looked at their global challenge. To do this they have learned about recycling and how important this has become in today’s world, learnt about the countryside code and the damage we as human beings do to the countryside.

In addition to this they have learnt how to make camp gadgets out of elastic bands and canes, built a bivouac, played wide games and cooked on an open fire, they did have to wash up afterwards though which as I am sure you can imagine was greeted with sighs, moans and groans.

Scouts -One Sunday six Scouts from Belton attended the district air rifle shooting competition at Martham scout HQ. The scouts all did really well although we won’t know the result until all seven scout troop teams from the district has been counted. A special well done to Marie for who was shooting with the Scouts for the first time

We are busy preparing for our AGM which we all enjoy, we are looking forward to showing everyone what we have been up to during the last year.
