“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

Jimmy B.“the fun starts here”….4 GEARHEAD GAZZETTE

“These are special people who come into our lives”

As I put together this issue of the Gearhead

Gazzette, I read with great interest Feature Writer Ed Woodard’s article on Bill Akin of Nashville TN.

In my opinion, Bill, like Ed, is one of our “Hot Rod Hero’s. I have had the good fortune to meet Bill. I have seen Bill at various events and we’ll talk about some car related deal of some sort. Always…always I get the better end of the deal with some new learnings from Bill, even though he doesn’t know he taught me something new!

I feel lucky, in that I have a number of people who I hold in the “Hot Rod Hero” status for myself. These are special people who come into our lives, have come into my life, and made me a better person in a number of different ways. No it’s not always about a car, but rather life.

What’s the value of a “Hot Rod Hero” you might ask? I say “PRICELESS”!!!!

My dad is my #1 Hero. There isn’t anything he can’t fix. More importantly he has given me nothing but support, love and help whenever I have gotten stuck on something. I wouldn’t be where I am at on this old rock we all live on, without him. He still helps me today at 88 years young!

I count myself lucky in that I had another almost # 1 “Hot Rod Hero” in my life, like a 2nd Dad to me. I say had, as Joe is helping the “Big Guy” upstairs these days, as we lost him last November. Gone way too early.

Joe never had a “hot rod” as long as I knew him. He liked them, enjoyed them, helped my best friend build his. That was Joe. His real passion was woodworking. Hand crafted wood working.

Joe went with us to car shows, even going out to the West Coast for a show out there once. Never laughed so hard for so many days.

Probably the most special time was when he helped me build a display for a car I was showing back in my younger days. The wood work was perfect. The way he built it so it could come apart and go together easy was awesome.

The best part of the whole deal was spending time in his garage, learning from him. Not learning about woodworking, though that did happen in a small way. But

watching and just listening as he explained what he was doing. That gearheads is where the learning comes from. The sharing of what one is doing, so others can learn and understand.

The question I would ask you, is what are you doing to teach someone younger than you, how to do this thing called

“hot rodding”? If we don’t share and teach, we will all lose what we love so much.

Take another look at the picture here of my buddy Tommy Ring and his grandson. You know what Tommy is teaching him?? He is teaching him how much fun it is to ride around town in grandpa’s rat rod! If you don’t think that has an effect…you are very wrong in my opinion.

When you go to that next show or out in your shop working, offer to let somebody younger than you join you. I promise you will make a difference in their lives.

Thank’s Joe…measure twice, cut once…got it!

Tommy Ring & his grandson!

Recently I was very surprised with a phone call from Ed Woodard on behalf of the SHADETREE STREET ROD CLUB in Nashville TN.Ed called to tell me that I had won an award. I was not able to be at the show on Sunday when the awards were given out and on top of that, I didn’t even have a hot rod at the show all weekend. I had gone to the show on Saturday to check things out, but that was it.Ed told me what the award was and I was blown away as they say! The plaque is above in the picture. Then at the KRIS KRINGLE Show awards program, good friend Marty Crain made the presentation to me, on behalf of the SHADETREE STREET RODS and Ed Woodard. I want to say thank you to the SHADETREE STREET RODS, Marty Crain for the kind words at the award presentation and his friendship and also to Ed Woodard. Ed is the driving force behind this award which recognizes people who promote hot rodding and help it grow. Ed and his small crew nominate and select the receipients. Not many have gotten this award, and I ma humbled to be one of a few. Thank you!

Every year for the past 64, the FINEST Roadsters in the world have competed for the coveted title of “AMERICA”S MOST BEAUTIFUL ROADSTER” . Being an AMBR winner is right there with being the RIDLER winner. Before some rule changes took place, some of the AMBR winners also won the RIDLER too.

Most everyone knows the history of this show. It started out in Oakland CA. and aquired the Oakland Roadster Show due to it’s location. After moving to South San Francisco for a while, it migrated to So-Cal. The move has done noting but help the show grow!

Over the past couple of years the judging for the AMBR award has been changed too…for the better in our opinion. Now the roadsters up for the big prize are not just judged on bling and turntables, but rather how they look, and sound when they come into the building for the first set of judging that takes place. We agree…a hot rod has to look and sound just right. Now don’t get us wrong, we appreciate all the work that goes into all the entries in the whole show. These are someone pride and joy and they have invested HUGE sums of their lives into their favorite ride. But when it comes to those roadsters….well they just gotta look and sound right, if you know what we mean. The 64th Annual show was a huge success in 2013. Roadsters, Hot rods, customs, the Grand Daddy Drive-in and so much more!John Buck and his crew at RODSHOWS will be doing it again in Jan 2014 at the FAIRPLEX. If you have never been to “THE ROADSTER SHOW”, make plans now! You wont be sorry you went.

SEMA SHOW

2013

Mother’s New Product ReviewThe Specialty Equipment Manufacturer’s Association works as the aftermarket’s platform and support source. The SEMA Show is the premier event of the year and attended by thousands from all over the world. It is very much an international market place.

This is the showcase for product of the manufacturers and it features the new product for the following year. It’s always exciting to get a peek at the new stuff

The air is full of excitement with racing celebrities signing posters and posing for pictures. There’s Models showing off the new products and entertainers doing card tricks and otherattractions to stop the crowd. From the time the

doors open to closing for the day, it is a circus atmosphere.

In the parking lot out front are the big rigs of the manufacturers with their road show exhibit. Along with that is tons of dirt brought in for off

road racing. Out back is a road course for sports cars. There’s a lot of noise and excitement to make this a great event. Four days go fast for sure.

The 2013 event was bigger than ever and the

economy did not hold back the attendance at all.

Isles were so full of people that you could hardly walk. There was

such a need for space that a new section was

placed in the upper hallway meeting rooms.

Let’s go to a video of the show action. Here you can view some of it and

get the feel of being there. If you have never experienced it, you have missed out. Unfortunately it is for the aftermarket businesses and this may be the only way, some can go there. The

Mothers Brothers takes you there. Let’s do it!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPRT673Fgy8

Cool Cars and Great Music..what a combination! That’s exactly what the team at Both Barrels Promotions put together last year(2013) for a fun event. While the car count was not huge. (weather and about 3 other events going on), for a first time event it was good. Cool cars, good music, swap meet, vendors and food…what more could you ask for! Here’s some of the action from the show.

Editor’s Note: This edition, Ed tells us about one of my Hot Rod Hero’s…one of our Hot Rod Treasures!

Bill Akin……A real HOT RODDER !

I cannot exactly say when I first met Bill, but it

must have been shortly after buying my house in

Hermitage TN. It probably had a little to do with

the fact that several other Tappets Club members

lived in the same subdivision. Time was about

1960-61, just about the time I was starting to put

on the State Fair Auto Shows with my late friend

Paul Stargel. It would seem that Bill was a regular

visitor on Saturday morning, making the rounds of

the car guys. Sometimes welcome, sometimes

not! What we all soon learned is Bill was always

willing to help us if we had a mechanical problem.

Bill has always been like that with his friends.

I am not sure what was the first hotrod Bill showed

up in, but I think it was his Willy’s roadster.

Small block Chevrolet engine, wooden pickup

bed and a polished stainless steel frame. We all

sort of knew at that point he was serious about

his cars. Time frame was about 1967 or 68 as he

had the roadster in one of my car shows during

that time. Another thing that Bill is famous for, are

the quotes he uses to describe events in his life.

If you ever have conversation with him ,he will

certainly use one or two to get his point across.

I guess the first one that comes to mind was

when he carried a old engine down to the “QD’ to

get it cleaned up. “QD” everyone in Hermitage

now knows is the quarter douche! One of his

later quotes is referencing a group of Keystone

Cops running around in circles like the Katz &

Jammer Kids.

As for Bill’s talent as a car builder you must note

that all restorations and modifications are done

by him, except paint & upholstery, except some

of the complicated sheet metal forming.

I remember once someone asked where he

bought the wheels on the orange 40 Ford. He

said he made them! The quick response was

how Bill answered, just as quick with the

following answer, “I put a chunk of aluminum in

the lathe and cut off everything that didn’t look

like a wheel. “ Oh did I mention those wheels

have real knock offs that Bill made too. Bill is

noted for those abrupt quick to the point

answers. He can keep you well entertained for

hours with his knowledge about machining and

Indy car history & restoration. Yeah, a real hot

rodder for sure!

Enclosed are pictures of his 1940 Ford Coupe

that was painted nearly 40years ago & looks just

as good as the day it was painted.

The 1932 Ford roadster is the car Tom Medley

has been seen driving at the Nats as well as the

car Thom Taylor drove to California in January

2013.

Somewhere along the line, he picked up a Offy

4 cylinder engine but had nothing to put it in for

several years. Not sure how he came across it

but he found an old Quinn Epperly car in a junk

yard in Russellville KY. I think he swapped a few

dollars of braided hose and took it home. Bill

researched the car and discovered it was the

Autolite roadster from the last Indy roadster

group. When Bill restores the cars he puts them

into the same configuration as they were on the

first race day at Indy, right down to the exact

decals & lettering. Enclosed are photos of

the 3 Indy roadsters he restored, all have been

shown at Pebble Beach where he has won 3

first along with 2 Tony Hulman Awards for Best

Open Wheel Race Cars.

Over the years Bill was tight with the late Gray

Baskerville, Dean Jefferies & Lil John Buttera.

In 2013 Bill’s cars were featured in HOT ROD &

Car Craft 3 or 4 times with Thom Taylor driving

the 1932 Ford Roadster trip to California.

Page 27: Vol 14 january 2014 gearhead gazzette

Thom was able to drive the Bowes car at Indy

and Bill’s highlight of the year was showing the

rebuild of the Bryant Heating roadster at Pebble

Beach.

Bill’s reputation as the authority on the late Offy

Indy roadsters has made him a Indy legend.

I guess it would be a good time to bring up the

fact that Bill has obtained the Hoover car that

started out in Nashville in the early 60’s. This

car was more of a show car rather than a

competitive race car. Knowing Bill like I do, I

can hardly wait to see this finished car.

As for all that Bill has been involved in, would

take more time and paper than I have to write

about so I will just throw out a few things you

can think about like that Rolls Royce with

“HOTROD” license plate, or the fiberglass

Rayson Craft boat with a 427” engine, or

VALZILLA the Plymouth Valiant with the 426

small block MOPAR engine(A real beast)

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont.

or the gas turbine engine and the 1932 Ford

Roadster with a 4 cam Indy engine with 4 Weber

carbs.

As you can see Bill Akin is a real HOT

RODDER!

Picture is trusty stooge Joe Klinkhardt driving

the Bryant Heating & Cooling roadster at Indy

in 2013. This car won first in class at Pebble

Beach & the Tony Hulman Award last year.

The HOT ROD REUNION. The name is a bit deceiving for what the actual event is really all about. These days, when you mention the words “hot rod”, most folks think old car or cool old car or even a hot rod type show. All of those description are correct. When it come to the HOLLEY HOT ROD REUNION event, the main deal with the event is the drag racing and old race cars all over the grounds. Yes there are a couple of thousand cool hot rods, muscle cars, customs and more all over the Beech Bend Raceway grounds, but coming back to that name…it’s all about the race cars.

Go back in time to the 50’s & 60’s, the guys racing all called their cars “hot rods’. Most of them in the 50’s were what we refer today as hot rods (Pre 49 era cars).

Listen to John Force in an interview at an NHRA event now…he STILL calls his racecar his “’ol hot rod”. Taking nothing away from all the great entries at the show, this one, at least to us, is all about the old race cars…the “hot rods”. This is what we come to see, hear, smell (nitro anyone!) and experience. The stands are packed most of the time when the racing is going on, whether its TOP FUEL, Funny Car Match Racing or the Nostalgia Super Stockers. It’s an awesome show. It’s all going to happen again in 2014 over Fathers day weekend. Make your plans now to go see some “‘ol hot rods”. If you listen real close…they’re pulling into the staging lanes now.

“Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!…where the great ones run!”

This event just keeps growing gearheads! The 8th annual GOODGUYS Nashville Nationals was another hit in 2013. The sweet music of big horsepower, thumpin’ cam motors, hot rods and customs cruising around the LP Field grounds, like in a music video, along with all the gearheads taking it all in, made for another hit in the album of the Nashville Nationals!

The event started with the Thursday night KICK OFF party at ADAVANCED PLATING. This has become a must do feature of the Nashville event!

Friday saw some liquid sunshine fall, but the hot rodders were still there. Sunny beautiful weather on Saturday & Sunday let everyone check out the AUTOCROSS action, the PRO’s PICK area with top shelf cars and trucks. Add in the swap meet, vendors from around the country, and so much more….WHEW!!! Not enough time to see it all.

We predicate that this event will see more growth in 2014 due to the ease of getting to Nashville, great attractions in Music City and just because it’s a lot of fun!
