The 31 July Vocational Tour meeting was held at the SMILE HOUSE / Yayasan Senyum (Jl. Pulau Aru No. 9, Denpasar) and started at 17:00. This facility is a halfway house located next to the Sanglah General Hospital where most of the Cleft Palate operations are taken place. The SMILE House is used by patients prior to and after their operations, as well as the head office of the Yayasan Senyum. Patients and their family members / friends are looked after at the SMILE House, which includes free accommodations and meals. During their stay, the Patient Coordinator assists patients through the complexities of the Indonesian Health System, i.e.

visiting the various clinics and going to their specialist appointments following their surgeries.

Honorary Member Mary Northmore (right), the founder of the Yayasan Senyum, showed a presentation of many ‘before and after’ photographs of recent operations, which were facilitated solely by the Rotary Club of Bali Seminyak (RCBS). One out of every 600 children in the world is born with a cleft palate deformity, which oddly enough is more prevalent in Asian countries. In some rare cases a baby is born with its brain too forward - pushing on its nose. These corrective surgeries are both difficult to perform and costly. From 2008 to 2013, 321 Cleft Palate operations have been completed successfully. Honorary Member Mary again thanked the RCBS for their continual support and especially Rtns. Detlev and Lusi for their regular donations from their weekly Sunday Brunches during the past three years. In June 2013, together, hand-in-hand with the BK3S Kupang, Plastic Surgeon team from the University of Brawijaya, Malang and the Yayasan Senyum, successfully conducted the first period of ‘Baksos.’ This was held in three different cities in the Eastern part of Indonesia: Kupang, Alor and Larantuka. During this time, a total of 75 cleft palate surgeries were completed. There was also a team from Jakarta that observed and monitored this project. The RCBS members in attendance then took a tour of the SMILE House where many patients and family members were waiting to welcome the curious visitors. Honorary Member Mary showed the members the rooms used for accommodations, the examining room, the office area and the kitchen whereby patients and their family members can prepare their own meals – should they decide to do this. Thank you Honorary Member Mary and your dedicated staff for a wonderful visit to the SMILE House.

- inducted the Club’s NEWEST member, Mr. Guy Le Henaff (middle). Following the induction ceremony, P Raphaël asked Rtn. Guy to tell the members a little about himself:

I was born in Paris, France. My father was from Brittany, France and my mother from Switzerland. I probably feel more Brittany than French, but this is an old, cute aspect of France. Though I came from this interesting mixture, I spent many years in a number of countries around the world as my father was in the military and he was relocated many times. When it came time for me to go to university ,I move permanently to Paris where I followed ‘Mathematics’ leading to an Engineering degree in computer science. Not fully graduated, my entrepreneurial spirit took over and I started my first venture with Mr. Bruno Delean and Mr. Germain Nadaud in 1987. At a later time, Mr. Lister Vickery joined me. Our focus was ‘Image Processing’ for the publishing industries. This put a stamp on future business achievements for me to be a designer of tools for the media industries. I became a specialist in Image Processing and high speed processing of massive amounts of data.

Also in 1987, I married Veronique Mouton and as time went by, we became the happy and proud parents of two girls and two boys - the youngest being 16 and the oldest 25. When my first venture was sold to a US company (Triple-I), I became a VP of Engineering, based in Boston. The title was not as important to me, but rather the level of information I had access to. This was my first in depth contact with a stock-listed company. After a couple of years, I started a new venture in France, aimed at the printing industries. This company later was transferred to Canada where I organized an IPO, which finally allowed my company to ultimately be listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

After many years and many innovative solutions, in 2004 after a merger, I left this venture and become a consultant offering tailored-made product requiring data analysis. This led me to some specialized work on trading - teased by what I had learnt behind the curtains of public companies. However, my inner creativeness and my soul stayed as one as a designer and I continued to focus on computer science. In 2008, I joined up with an old friend and prior partner Mr. Bruno Delean, himself successful in image recognition for Bio identification, and together we started working in the field of Artificial Vision. Later we relocated to Bali in 2010. Even though our work was licensed based and involved a research phase, we decided that Bali would be the ideal place to work even if our corporate customers were based in western countries.

My childhood experiences, in under-developed countries, had a profound impact on my perception of the world and showed me how lucky I was and I am today. Initially I helped on the IT side of various companies aimed at addressing the CSR of majors. In 2006, I also became a director of ‘Transit,’ a Montreal based company where the workforce was exclusively people with mental or physical disabilities, I am happy to say that I'm still an active director. Now in Bali, I realize that in spite of ‘some’ wealthier aspects of this inspiring island, there is another side that definitively need some help. This is WHY I wanted to be a Rotarian and help other people. Lastly, I would like to mention that during the recent ‘Rotary Academy,’ that I attended, it was noted, “that being a Rotarian is a way to be a better person.” This may seem obvious to some, but we really need to keep this in our minds.

- informed the members of a one-day seminar on 24 August 2013. ‘The Seamless Seminar’ is a TRIPLE seminar focusing on Membership Development, The Rotary Foundation and Public Image. It will take place at the Mercure Harvestland Hotel (Jln. Bypass Ngurah Rai) from 08:30 to 17:00. The cost is only IDR 190,000 per person. Please register with PP Suzana Chandra <[email protected]>. ‘BURNING MAN’ by Tomas Loewy

- announced that the RC of Bali Nusa Dua would be holding its annual Tennis Tournament from 24 August to 1 September 2013. Please see their web site for more details: http://rotarybalitennis.org

- showed the members a power point presentation regarding the Club’s Micro-credit (Goat) Project in Nusa Penida. This included the goats being transported by boat, the cages constructed by the farmers, the farmers receiving the goats and Dr. Bayu facilitating the progress of this project. Thank you Sec. Anita for making this visual presentation.

Rtn. Jorg thanked P Raphaël for a wonderful dinner buffet and his kind hospitality. He then proceeded to introduce his friend, Mr. Tomas Loewy (left) who is a photographer for the Burning Man event in the USA. Started in 1986, the Burning Man event is where thousands of people (60,000 last year) congregate annually in the Nevada, USA desert (the week before Labor Day) for several days to enjoy some very eccentricity and creativity Art. Tomas showed the members many professional photos taken by himself of the people attending this spectacular event. Many people attend this event, but come in outlandish costumes and have a wild and crazy time (let their hair down). However, when it concludes, there is a serious clean-up committee who ensures that the beautiful landscape returns to its natural beauty. For more details, please visit http://www.burningman.com
