GOLF TOURNAMENT

What’s Up at CECC?Submitted by Linda Brewer

The summer is in full swing at CECC. We have been spending lots of time outside when the weather allows - it helps to work out all the energy stored up while sitting in your seat during the school year. While out and about we have seen lots of cool nature stuff. We kept tabs on a robin’s nest on Ella and Isabell’s porch, enjoyed the toads in our window wells, and studied an immature cardinal (we looked it up in a bird book) that spent some time perched near our slide. We spent several days learning about birds, and drew pictures of what we would do if we were birds. The most popular answer was fly, of course, and the most popular bird to be was a hummingbird. We made bird feeders, and designed our own birds to hang from the ceiling. We learned that the largest bird is the ostrich, and the smallest is the bee hummingbird, which is named that because it is only the size of a bumble bee! We also spent some time talking about the season of summer, as well as weather, and weather predicting. In order to get a better view of the flooding in the area, we took a walk down to Pigeon Creek and saw the fields that have suddenly become lakes. Each Tuesday morning at :00, we walk to the fire barn for library story time. This is a free event that is open to all kids in the area. We have seen some new faces in the crowd, which has been great. We encourage you to take advantage of this time of stories and songs provided by the Council Bluffs Public Library. As we mentioned in an earlier column, we did not receive the grant which allowed us to offer community enrichment classes as we have done for the past few summers. But we know that there is a great pool of talent out there in the Crescent community - so if you have knowledge in an area that you think would be of interest to the kids and are willing to donate an hour of your time to present a class, please let us know! Our column would not be complete without offering up thanks to the generous people who support us. This time the thanks go out to Mary Hansen who donated LOTS of toys and teaching materials to the center. The kids especially loved the toy tractors and the square dancing crinoline, which is perfect for dress up! As always, if you are interested in enrolling your child at the center for our summer session or for fall childcare and preschool, please contact us at 72-545-906, email us at [email protected] or check out our website at cecckids.com.

Registration: We are holding a registration time for families who are new to the district and wish to enroll at Crescent Elementary. It will be held on Wednesday, August 3rd 2:00-6:30pm. If families would like to enroll over the summer, they can go to the Education Service Center on 2 Scott Street in Council Bluffs for registration forms and information. The Crescent Elementary School offices will re-open on Monday, July 25th. Back to School Night: Tuesday, August 6th 4-6pm Bring school supplies, tour the school, and meet the teacher. The school supply lists are posted on the district website at www.cbcsd.org underneath the announcements section on the left side of the page. First day of school for the 20-202 school year will be Wednesday, August 7th. See you then! District Calendar: A reminder that the calendar for the 20-202 school year can also be found underneath the announcements section on the district webpage.

This excerpt was printed in the Connection last April but felt it was such a fitting description of what we are now experiencing... Every body has heard of the “Big Muddy” and what a snorter she sometimes becomes. When she takes a fit and gets her dander up and goes along swimmingly, then she makes a terrible muse, which to a man up a tree is not, to say the least, very pleasant on a cool day. We have, for a number of years, lived a close neighbor to Old Muddy, and have seen her on her “high heeled boots” many a time; but have never before seen her on so extensive a splurge as she is and for a few days has been. She has thrown cold water upon many an agricultural enterprise in the low bottoms and has been a damper to the stock range, and in some places, has joined the bluffs, upon either side with an aqueous turbid sheet. Lumbermen and stock have been hurried from the bottoms and in some places, buildings surrounded and inundated, and we believe, some of the river towns in the bottoms are no better off. We have been high and dry and fifteen feet above high water. Water is now receding.

Hard to shoot photos of. Hard to put words to. We’ve all read the articles and seen the photos both online and in the papers. There’s no doubt, the Flood of 20 will be remembered as one of the worst...and longest lasting...in history. These photos were taken June 30th.
